Lady Gaga Breaks Silence On ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Negative Reviews: “You Keep Going Even If Something Didn’t Connect In The Way You Intended”
Image
Months after her latest film Joker: Folie à Deux opened to bad reviews and very disappointing box office, Lady Gaga is sharing her perspective on the matter.

“People just sometimes don’t like some things,” Gaga told Elle in an interview published Tuesday. ‘It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” She adds that the fear of failure is what can be really damaging: “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.”

Todd Phillips’ musical sequel, which saw Joaquin Phoenix reprise his Oscar winning role of the DC villain and also starred Gaga, followed the first 2019 film, which at one point was the highest grossing...

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Hitting Max Next Weekend
Image
Warner Bros. very ambitious Todd Phillips musical sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will debut on Max on Friday, Dec. 13 with a linear premiere on HBO on Dec. 14 at 8Pm Est.

The movie, which saw Joaquin Phoenix reprise his Oscar winning role of the DC villain, also starred Lady Gaga. The first 2019 movie was at one point, before Marvel Studios/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine unseated it, the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time at $1.1 billion. The sequel was fully rejected by moviegoers with a D Cinemascore, opening to an awful $37.6M stateside (versus the first movie’s record October bow of $96.2M) and finaling at $58.3M domestic, $206.4M worldwide off a $190M production cost before P&a. Reports have suggested that the sequel will lose around $100M.

Exhibition has no reason to complain: That’s a 71-day theatrical window for Joker 2 from its Oct. 4 opening day until its drop on Max.

Polarizing flop ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is coming to Max very soon
Image
In a year rife with spectacular cinematic misfires, “Joker: Folie à Deux” is the biggest one of all. Director Todd Phillips’ nihilistic musical sequel to his billion-dollar-grossing 2018 Batman-adjacent psychological thriller cost over $200 million to produce and failed to break even at the box office. Most critics didn’t like it and audiences fully rejected it; it’s the only superhero movie to ever get a “D” audience rating from market research firm CinemaScore.

And now, the film is maniacally dancing its way onto streaming, where viewers who didn’t want to spend their time and money seeing it in a theater can see if it’s really as bad as its reputation suggests. “Joker: Folie à Deux” premieres on Max next week, the streamer announced Friday.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” stars Joaquin Phoenix (who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the first “Joker”) as disturbed aspiring comedian Arthur Fleck,...

Joker: Folie à Deux Max Streaming Debut Announced
Image
Warner Bros. Pictures’ Joker: Folie à Deux will make its global streaming debut on Friday, December 13, exclusively on Max. The film will debut on HBO linear on Saturday, December 14, at 8:00 p.m. Et.

From writer, director, and producer Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born).

Joker: Folie à Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.

The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener, alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

Oscar nominee Phillips directed Joker: Folie à Deux from a screenplay by fellow Oscar nominee Scott Silver & Phillips,...

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Gets Max Streaming Release Date
Image
“Joker: Folie à Deux,” Todd Phillips’ sequel to the Oscar-winning film starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be available to stream on Max on Dec. 13. It will debut on HBO linear on Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. Et.

The divisive film grossed $206 million at the global box office, including $58 million in North America. It cost $200 million to produce and is expected to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run.

Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge called “Folie à Deux” a “scandalously unpopular sequel” and wrote that this time around, it “feels like ‘Joker’ hates us — or, more to the point, it’s as if Phillips turned on his original audience.”

“Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital,” reads the film’s logline.

Lady Gaga stars in “Folie à Deux” as Harley Quinn alongside Phoenix’s Joker.

Joker: Folie à Deux sets 4K Blu-ray date; full special features are now listed
Image
While this year has had its fair share of surprising flops, Joker: Folie à Deux is probably one of the more surprising ones. It had the hype of Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn and the musical twist potentially lent itself to exploring interesting territory as an R-rated sequel to a notorious comic book villain. The movie’s response would become incredibly underwhelming, and Blu-ray.com has announced that Warner Bros. is already set to release the film’s 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray release on December 17. The digital release is going to be even sooner, with a recent Variety report on the film’s box office woes revealing WB is dumping it on digital early – October 29 – in the hopes of recouping some of its $200 million investment.

Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. The description reads, “Joker: Folie À Deux...

Joker: Folie À Deux Spoiler Discussion & Poll: How Would You Rate The Divisive Joker Sequel?
Image
2023 wasn't a good year for the DC brand. DC Studios announcing that the franchise would be rebooted at the start of the year lessened interest in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with each of them struggling at the box office.

Only Blue Beetle really managed to escape the wrath of fans and critics, though it too flopped with $130 million on a budget of over $100 million.

2024's only DC movie is Joker: Folie à Deux and it's finally here. Unfortunately, reviews have not been kind, most fans seem to hate the sequel, and opening weekend box office projections make for painful reading.

Joker wasn't exactly a critical darling in 2019 but it broke records and earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar, so the $1 billion hit spawning a follow-up always seemed in equal parts both inevitable and unlikely. Where did it all go wrong for Joker: Folie à Deux?...

Joker: Folie À Deux Thursday Previews Are Down Nearly 50% From Joker; Receives 1/2 Star Rating From Audiences
Image
The Thursday evening preview numbers are in for Joker: Folie à Deux and the latest DC movie made only $7 million. It's worth noting that the number also includes whatever the Joker sequel earned from Monday's early screenings across North America.

This is a far cry from the 2019 movie which grossed $13.3 million on Thursday alone; from there, it made a record-breaking $96.2 million throughout its opening weekend.

Tracking is all over the place for Joker: Folie à Deux, but a $50 million debut is a best-case scenario at this stage (it's currently looking likely to land somewhere between $48 million - $53 million).

Making matters worse is the PostTrak score; we talk about CinemaScore a lot here but this is an exit polling service reporting audience demographics and the aspects of each title that trigger interest and attendance.

While not particularly well-known, it's an important tool used by studios and box office analysts and Joker: Folie à Deux...

Does Bruce Wayne (Or Batman) Appear In Joker: Folie À Deux? Here's What You Need To Know - Spoilers
Image
While 2019's Joker clearly wasn't a movie overly concerned with adhering to the comic books, it did take place in a Gotham City with at least a few noteworthy ties to the DC Universe.

Chief among them was the presence of the Wayne family. The movie went to great lengths to make us - and Arthur Fleck - believe he might be the illegitimate son of Thomas Wayne (making him Bruce Wayne's half-brother).

It was an intriguing idea but Arthur eventually learned his mother lied; however, Joker at least left some room for interpretation by making it possible that Thomas faked those adoption papers to hide his infidelity.

During Joker's final act, Arthur's actions inspire other criminals in Gotham to act out, including the man who guns down the young Bruce Wayne's parents in front of him.

You'd think at least some of these ideas would be revisited in Joker: Folie à Deux,...

Joker: Folie À Deux Spoilers: Here's What Happens To Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn - Will A Spin-Off Follow?
Image
Unsurprisingly, Joker: Folie à Deux puts a unique, not particularly comic-accurate new spin on Harley Quinn Lee Quinzel. However, she's perhaps more in line with the source material than the trailers have let on.

When Arthur Fleck meets Lee, she claims that her mother had her locked up in Arkham Asylum and that she too grew up poor near where he lived. In reality, Lee went to grad school for psychiatry, lives with her wealthy parents, and chose to have herself committed so she could meet "Joker."

Arthur eventually confronts her and she claims to be pregnant; however, when that's brought up again later, all signs point to it being yet another lie from Lee.

When Arthur confesses at his trial that Joker is just a persona he created, she disowns him and leaves the courthouse. Encountering her after escaping, she's in a full face of smudged clown makeup, a harlequin-inspired costume,...

Does Joker: Folie À Deux Introduce An Elseworlds Version Of Two-Face? Spoilers Follow!
Image
Joker featured only a few characters likely to be familiar to comic book fans, no great surprise when it was envisioned as a standalone tale about one man's descent into madness.

Filmmaker Todd Phillips has gone on record to say Arthur Fleck was never meant to be the "Clown Prince of Crime" but Joker: Folie À Deux adds another familiar Gotham City villain to the mix with the introduction of Harvey Dent.

Played by Harry Lawtey, Harvey is a District Attorney in the sequel and very confident about his chances of keeping Arthur/Joker behind bars.

The comic book version of the character has multiple origin stories but the recurring theme is that he ends up being attacked in court, resulting in horrific scars which transform him into the deranged Batman rogue, Two-Face.

Joker: Folie À Deux features a trial and the explosion which rocks the courtroom - believed...

Joker: Folie À Deux's Rotten Tomatoes Score Plummets (And Its Audience Score Is Even Worse)
Image
When Joker: Folie À Deux premiered at the Venice Film Festival last month, there were plenty of rave reviews following a reported 11-minute standing ovation.

However, the sequel also hit Rotten Tomatoes with a slightly lower score than 2019's Joker, suggesting critics weren't quite as high on the follow-up to a movie which, despite being an awards success, was also no critical darling.

This week, things have only got worse for Joker: Folie À Deux. The movie's Rotten Tomatoes score has continued to decline as more verdicts have been counted and, as we write this, it sits at 39% based on 165 reviews.

Even more troubling is the fact fans have awarded it an awful 37% Audience Score on the new "Popcornmeter." This will do nothing to help Joker: Folie À Deux during a weekend that promises to be a wholly disappointing one.

The current Critics Consensus states, "Joaquin Phoenix's eponymous Joker...

Joker: Folie À Deux Director Todd Phillips Says His Time In The DC Universe Has Ended Following Sequel
Image
Joker: Folie à Deux is now playing in theaters and, following Joker's box office and award success in 2019, Warner Bros. Discovery was banking on this sequel being every bit as successful.

As of now, that doesn't appear to be the case. Joker was meant to be a standalone story and, while there was speculation about an eventual follow-up perhaps pitting Arthur Fleck against a mentally broken Bruce Wayne who'd become a vengeful Batman, that always felt more like fan fiction than a realistic prospect.

The movie we're getting this weekend instead focuses on the twisted romance between Joker and Lee Quinzel/Harley Quinn, with musical numbers and an ending that's dividing fans.

Regardless of whether he goes out on a high or low, filmmaker Todd Phillips views Joker: Folie à Deux as the end of his stint in the DC Universe.

"It’s not really where this movie is headed for me,...

Joker: Folie À Deux Opening Weekend Projections Continue To Decline As Sequel's Massive Budget Is Revealed
Image
Joker: Folie à Deux hit tracking three weeks ago and looked set to open with $70 million, a $26 million drop from 2019's Joker. That's still a respectable sum in the post-pandemic landscape, but those projections continue to drop...and drop.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the sequel could now open in North America with as little as $50 million, a disappointing start for a movie which the trade says "is expected to be a major player in the Oscars race."

Advance ticket sales have been lower than anticipated and, overseas, Warner Bros. Discovery is hoping Joker: Folie à Deux can debut with $80 million - $85 million (it doesn't arrive in China and Japan until several weeks from now).

Five years ago, Joker debuted with $96.2 million domestically and $155 million overseas, eventually earning what was then a record-breaking $1 billion when all was said and done at the worldwide box office.

The trade also confirms that,...

Joker: Folie À Deux Has Nothing To Laugh About Based On Opening Weekend Box Office Projections
Image
There's been a lot of Dcu news over the past week from Lanterns casting to plans for animated Robin movie. It's almost as if DC Studios is trying to distract us from, say, an upcoming box office flop.

While it would be a tad unfair to put Joker: Folie à Deux in that category at such a early stage, this weekend isn't shaping up to be a particularly good one for the sequel.

According to Deadline, the DC Comics adaptation is eying a $55 million - $60 million opening in North America and a worldwide bow of $140 million. Those numbers aren't too bad on the surface but when compared to 2019's Joker, they look far less impressive.

Five years ago, that movie opened with $96.2 million, blowing past $80 million projections. It also exceeded expectations internationally to beat its $155 million forecast with over $248 million worldwide.

Reviews for Joker: Folie à Deux haven't been as...

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ U.S. premiere: Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are all smiles at Hollywood event
Image
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga were all smiles as they brought September to an action-packed close at the “Joker: Folie à Deux” U.S. premiere in Hollywood. The event, held on Monday night at the Tcl Chinese Theatre IMAX, was followed by an intimate reception at the Sunset Tower Hotel where cast members, producers, costume designers and more mix and mingled amongst the crowd.

The love between the two actors, who play companions in crime in the musical sequel, inspired some fans and influencers to dress in Arthur “Joker” Fleck-inspired costumes and makeup from head to toe, while others channeled Harleen “Lee” Quinzel’s eclectic fashion style. Quite the experience!

In the Warner Bros. psychological thriller, Arthur struggles with dual identities while being imprisoned at Arkham State Hospital for horrific murders committed during the first movie. As he awaits trial in New York, he stumbles upon a newfound love for...

Does Joker: Folie À Deux Have A Post-Credits Scene? Here's Your Spoiler-Free Answer
Image
Screenings of Joker: Folie À Deux have begun and, if what we've seen on social media is any indication, the response from fans thus far is mixed at best.

It's always best to make your own mind up, though, and if you do plan on heading to theaters in the next few days, we're guessing you want to know if there's anything worth waiting for once the Joker sequel's credits roll.

Well, we can tell you that no, Joker: Folie À Deux does not have any mid or post-credits scenes. When the movie ends, that's it, though you can always stick around to see the names of everyone who worked on the DC Comics adaptation.

It's not overly surprising that there are no hints or teases for the future. That was the case with Joker in 2019 and filmmaker Todd Phillips has already confirmed he won't be back for a third movie.

Joker 2 Director Comments on Potential Standalone Film for Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn
Image
Joaquin Phoenix's Joker gets a partner in both romance and crime in the new movie Joker: Folie Deux. The movie introduces Lady Gaga as a new incarnation of Harley Quinn, though director Todd Phillips is suggesting that fans should not get their hopes up about seeing the character getting her own spinoff film.

Per Variety, the director and stars of the Joker sequel were asked questions while on the red carpet at the movie's Hollywood premiere. Phillips was asked if he would want to develop a standalone movie for Gaga's "Lee," as her version of Harleen Quinzel is referred to in the film. The director suggested that this wasn't an avenue he was looking to go down, feeling like the Joker sequel is already a standalone film in many ways compared to the first movie.

Joker: Folie À Deux's Ending Has Leaked Online And DC Fans Really Aren't Happy - Major Spoilers
Image
When the review embargo for Joker: Folie à Deux lifted, a couple of the trades - never ones to give spoilers a second thought - alluded to the movie's potentially divisive ending.

The suggestion was that Arthur Fleck dies, meaning he never becomes one of Batman's greatest enemies...something which hasn't ever seemed overly likely in the grounded world filmmaker Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have created.

Now, following an additional round of screenings, we have a better idea of why the director recently described the Joker sequel's conclusion as "unsettling" (alluding to reviews which took issue with Joker: Folie à Deux's final moments).

TV spots for the movie have shown an explosion in the courtroom but, according to what we've been told, the blast doesn't kill Arthur. Instead, he manages to flee and reunites with Lee Quinzel...who promptly breaks up with him upon realising his true self is Arthur,...

New Joker: Folie À Deux Posters Revealed As Todd Phillips Justifies Decision To Make The Sequel A Musical
Image
We're now just one week away from Joker: Folie à Deux arriving in theaters and, despite this being 2024's only DC movie, excitement seems oddly muted among comic book fans.

There are those who feel Joker is a movie that should have been left well alone, while others find the prospect of a musical just too off-putting. Warner Bros. has largely kept that out of the sequel's marketing campaign but it's no secret that Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will be busting out some tunes together.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips justified the decision to make this sequel a musical after the grounded nature of the 2019 movie.

"[Arthur] had issues. Clearly. But, there’s a light, a beauty, and a romance inside of him," the filmmaker explained. "It was something Joaquin and I talked about early on; yes, he’s out of step with the world.

Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix Walk ‘Joker 2’ U.K. Premiere Red Carpet as Darkness Falls Over London
Image
Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix had fans in and around London’s Leicester Square in ecstasy for the Wednesday U.K. premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux from director Todd Phillips and Warner Bros.

The follow-up to the critical and commercial smash hit film Joker premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. The movie stars Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, the same role that earned Phoenix a best actor Oscar for his performance in the 2019 film. Lady Gaga plays Harley Quinn, the Joker’s companion in crime.

In Joker: Folie à Deux, Arthur Fleck is institutionalized at Gotham’s Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his crimes as the Joker. There, he finds love with Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga, and also the “music that’s always been inside him.”

The stars, director, and producers Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner walked the London red carpet outside the Cineworld Leicester Square cinema,...

Joker: Folie À Deux Director Believes Joker Would Be In Awe Of Batman; Lady Gaga Announces Companion Album
Image
The odds of Joker ever getting a sequel always seemed slim but, if and when one did happen, the hope was that it might pit Arthur Fleck against a Bruce Wayne who came seeking revenge as Batman.

An exploration of the Caped Crusader's mental health juxtaposed with Arthur's had the potential to be fascinating; instead, Joker: Folie à Deux will explore Joker's twisted relationship with Lee Quinzel, a.k.a. Harley Quinn, within the confines of Arkham Asylum.

Talking to IGN, filmmaker Todd Phillips revealed what he believes Arthur would think about the World's Greatest Detective.

"I think Arthur would be in awe of the alpha male that is Batman. I really do. I think Arthur would look up and appreciate it," he said. "I think he'd be in awe of that.”

"I think Arthur always had a fascination with men at ease, and he is not a man at ease.

Joker: Folie À Deux Box Office Tracking Dips (Again) As We Get Closer To The Sequel's Release
Image
Long-range tracking for Joker: Folie à Deux recently pointed to a $70 million opening weekend in North America, a far cry from those early $100+ million predictions.

Now, a troubling trend has been spotted in that tracking because the $70 million is slowly starting to dip. According to Puck's Matthew Belloni, the Joker sequel's tracking "has dropped slightly from $70M last week to $68M."

What's a couple of million dollars in the grand scheme of things? Well, not much, but it points to Joker: Folie à Deux potentially coming in well below estimates and perhaps even underperforming.

Reviews out of Venice were mostly positive but not glowing and a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score - which, like it or not, does sway many moviegoers - isn't likely to drive up interest in a movie that's already a tough sell. Why? Well, in place of the hard-hitting character drama we got in 2019 is a jukebox musical.

Joker: Folie À Deux Early Box Office Tracking Points To A Laughter-Free Opening Weekend For The Sequel
Image
Update: Joker: Folie À Deux has now hit official tracking boards and, while not quite as catastrophic as those early estimates, Deadline reveals that the sequel is only eyeing a $70 million opening weekend.

That's $26 million less than Joker's opening of $96.2 million and a far cry from the $100+ million estimates before those reviews out of Venice hit.

Despite sitting at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes (a mere 7% less than 2019's Joker), excitement for Joker: Folie À Deux is oddly muted. Much of it comes down to DC fans feeling there's simply no need for this sequel when that first movie made for such a great standalone tale.

Then, there's the fact this follow-up is a musical; that's a surefire way to lessen interest from fanboys and regular moviegoers alike. Throw in some of the divisive spoilers that made it out of Venice - not to mention the fact that 2023's mostly awful Dceu...

Joker: Folie À Deux Featurette Points To The Movie Being An Epic Love Story; New IMAX Poster Released
Image
Tickets for Joker: Folie À Deux went on sale earlier today and we now have a new featurette showcasing the epic love story which appears to be at the heart of Todd Phillips' DC sequel.

The movie, which currently sits at 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, doesn't look like a conventional follow-up to 2019's Joker as it will incorporate musical elements and perhaps even take place largely in Arthur Fleck's head. However, we're also getting a twisted love story revolving around Arthur and "Lee" Quinzel, with the latter serving as a bold new take on Harley Quinn.

In this latest sneak peek, we learn more about what's to come for the duo played by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga; along the way, there are new interviews, never-before-seen footage from Joker: Folie À Deux, and a glimpse behind the scenes.

IMAX has also shared another poster for the movie which, you guessed it,...

Joker: Folie À Deux Poster Released As Lady Gaga Details Her Approach To Playing Harley Quinn
Image
Lady Gaga may have only a handful of acting credits to her name, but she's already proven herself a huge talent in front of the camera. Next up for the Oscar-winner is Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips' DC movie which will see her transform into Lee Quinzel, a.k.a. Harley Quinn.

Talking to Vogue about how she approached the iconic character, Gaga said, "Harley Quinn is a character people know from the ether of pop culture. I had a different experience creating her, namely my experience with mania and chaos inside - for me, it creates a quietness."

"Sometimes women are labeled as these overly emotional creatures and when we are overwhelmed we are erratic or unhinged," the singer continued. "But I wonder if when things become so broken from reality, when we get pushed too far in life, what if it makes you...quiet?"

Gaga added, "I...

Joker: Folie À Deux Has The Last Laugh With Updated Fresh Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The review embargo for Joker: Folie À Deux lifted yesterday and it was clear that critics were mixed on the DC sequel. Several hours later, a Rotten Tomatoes score was generated: 59%.

That put the movie in "Rotten" territory and left it with a dreaded green splat. It's not as if 2019's Joker was a critical darling at 69%, but this still came as a blow given the hype surrounding this musical follow-up starring Lady Gaga.

Now, though, there's been a small change as, with a total of 43 reviews counted, it's risen to a "Fresh" 60%. How long it will be able to maintain that is unclear as we expect at least a couple hundred more verdicts to be added to the current total in the weeks ahead.

On Metacritic, the movie has 54/100 based on 23 critic reviews.

Despite Joker's mixed reviews, it still received mainstream award attention and won Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar...

Joker: Folie À Deux IMAX Poster Takes Joker And Harley Quinn To An Iconic Gotham City Location

The review embargo Joker: Folie À Deux lifts later today and IMAX has shared an eye-catching new poster for the movie which harkens back to one of Joker's most iconic scenes (it's like you can hear that song just looking at it isn't it?).

While we're hoping for some equally memorable needle drops in the sequel, the main focus is likely to be on the live singing performances delivered by stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

"For me, it was kind of about unlearning technique and forgetting how to breathe and allowing the song to come completely out of the character," Gaga said in Venice earlier today. "It gives the characters a way to express what they need to say."

Phoenix added, "Part of the joy at least for me was taking these songs that were standards and trying to find a way that they were specific to the characters.

Joker: Folie À Deux Reactions From Venice Hail It As "Movie Of The Year" And..."A Huge Disappointment"
Image
The first Joker: Folie à Deux screenings took place at the 81st Venice International Film Festival this morning and the first reactions are here.

The vast majority of critics have not chimed in because they're adhering to an embargo; some have either ignored that or didn't need to agree to it, explaining why we have a few early thoughts on Todd Phillips' Joker sequel.

We'll start with some of the verdicts posted on Letterboxd. @Filmdreams_FD says the "message of the movie is poignant and devastating," but adds that the movie "lacks emotions" and "feels like just a response to those people who thought the first was an eulogy of violence."

@D-Mo states that "the musical aspect feels like a gimmick and eventually [become] tiresome," while @starboy describes it as a "convoluted mess that aspires to be everything and ends up being nothing." Finally, @detectivezinc calls Joker: Folie à Deux "a huge disappointment.

Joker: Folie À Deux Poster Sees Arthur Fleck Put On A Happy Face; TV Spot Officially Reveals Harvey Dent
Image
Joker: Folie à Deux starts arriving in international theaters less than one month from today and Warner Bros. has just shared a new TV spot and poster for the highly anticipated sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

The latter makes for a striking piece of imagery, though it's that new footage we need to talk about.

As you'll see, it features an appearance from classic Batman character Harvey Dent as he makes his feelings known about what a danger Arthur Fleck is to society. Harry Lawtey (Industry) is playing Dent, though it remains to be seen whether anything will happen here that leads to him becoming a grounded version of Two-Face.

There are also some teases for Joker: Folie à Deux's big musical numbers, though those are largely being kept under wraps.

We're sure the studio wants to maintain some element of surprise, but many Hollywood insiders believe...

Joker: Folie À Deux TV Spot Sees Arthur Fleck Laugh His Way To Love With Lady Gaga's Lee Quinzel
Image
A new TV spot for Joker: Folie à Deux has been released and it features more new scenes from the upcoming DC sequel. There are plenty of intriguing never-before-seen shots here, with the focus still on Lee's twisted love for Arthur Fleck, her Joker.

The movie, which arrives in theaters just over one month from now, is the only DC title being released this year and was developed before DC Studios took charge of the wider Dcu franchise. Regardless, we expect it to feature the "Elseworlds" banner and Warner Bros. no doubt hopes it will be as big a hit as 2019's Joker.

Very early box office tracking has suggested it could open with as much as $120 million - $150 million in North America. While not quite up there with Deadpool & Wolverine's $211 million debut in July, we'd say Joker: Folie à Deux stands a chance of cracking $1 billion.

"The goal...

Joker: Folie À Deux Early Tracking Points To Solid Opening Weekend...That's Way Behind Deadpool & Wolverine
Image
In 2019, Joker opened to an impressive $93.5 million in North America and ultimately exceeded expectations by grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

A great deal has changed since then and the box office hasn't - and likely never will - recover from the impact of Covid-19. The days of blockbusters easily grossing $1 billion are also over as many moviegoers wait to watch new releases at home typically just weeks after they hit the big screen.

While we expect Joker: Folie à Deux to be a hit, the odds are stacked against it due to the damage done to the DC brand in 2023 and the fact this sequel will feature musical elements (which is never much of a draw).

According to Box Office Theory's Shawn Robbins, the movie is currently eyeing a $120 million - $150 million domestic debut. Those are great numbers and suggest the Clown Prince of Crime will be...

Joker: Folie À Deux Magazine Cover Teases A Bold New Take On DC's Most Twisted Couple
Image
In this October's Joker: Folie À Deux, we'll find Arthur Fleck locked up in Arkham Asylum and facing the death penalty. However, when he meets a Joker-obsessed patient called Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, a twisted, musical romance follows.

Understandably, many fans are disappointed that the Joker sequel is again taking major liberties with the source material; for starters, the Harleen on the page is a psychiatrist who falls under the Clown Prince of Crime's spell, not a fellow inmate.

While this version won't be the Harley Quinn we know from the comics, we do have a great new look at Lady Gaga's take on the villain (alongside Joaquin Phoenix's Joker) thanks to a new magazine cover.

"[Director] Todd [Phillips] took a very big swing with this whole concept and with the script, giving the sequel to 'Joker' this audacity and complexity," Gaga recently told Variety. "There’s music, there’s dance,...

'It's Really Motivated by That': Todd Phillips Reveals the Real Reason for Making Joker 2
Image
This fall, Joker is getting its sequel. Hitting theaters five years to the day after the first movie's release, Joker: Folie Deux will be debuting on the big screen on Oct. 4.

Ahead of the sequel's arrival, director Todd Phillips shared some insight into Joker: Folie Deux in an interview with Variety. He commented on how there's been a certain level of backlash against the idea of Joker getting a sequel, a move that some have labeled a "money grab." For Phillips, the money had nothing to do with why he felt motivated to move forward with developing Joker: Folie Deux. The director noted how close he'd gotten with the Joker "family" after working on the first movie, and getting back together to have fun all over again was what enticed him the most about taking on the project.

Todd Phillips: "So many people are so dismissive of sequels in general because they think,...

Joker: Folie À Deux Poster Teases The DC Universe's Most Twisted Romance
Image
Warner Bros. has released a new poster for Joker: Folie À Deux, Todd Phillips' highly anticipated sequel to 2019's Joker. This follow-up will revolve around the twisted romance between Arthur Fleck and Lee Quinzel, a.k.a. Joker and Harley Quinn.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are put front and centre on this latest sneak peek, though the fact they're both blood-spattered seems pretty ominous.

The actor recently spoke to Empire Magazine and revealed that he was only willing to play Joker again provided the movie didn't feel safe. "It's the only way that I can do any movie," he said. "If it doesn't feel like it's dangerous, if there's not a good chance that you're gonna fail spectacularly then what's the point?"

Phillips added, "That was literally the reason to do it. The only reason Joaquin would even do a sequel is if it felt frightening to him. One...

Joker: Folie À Deux Stills Feature Joker And Harley Quinn In Court And A Possible Arkham Breakout
Image
A handful of new Joker: Folie À Deux stills from the latest Empire Magazine have found their way online and they show the Clown Prince of Crime (Arthur Fleck) and Harley Quinn (Lee) in what looks like a pivotal courtroom scene.

We'd imagine Arthur Fleck is answering for gunning down Murray Franklin and inciting the riots which resulted in the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

There's also a shot of Arthur and Lee during what may be an attempted breakout from Arkham Asylum along with Joker dancing his way through the institution as Brendan Gleeson's unnamed guard watches on.

"Joaquin and I talked about another one the whole time while we were making the first movie, just because we love the character," director Todd Phillips recently said. "We were obsessed with Arthur. We would almost joke about it: 'Oh, we should take Arthur and we should do this.

Joker: Folie À Deux Director Reveals Why Arthur Fleck Will Never Be Gotham's "Clown Prince Of Crime"
Image
We never expected Joker to get a sequel, but if you're heading into Joker: Folie À Deux expecting to see Arthur Fleck transform into Gotham City's Clown Prince of Crime, you may be disappointed.

The iconic Batman villain has been portrayed vastly differently on screen over the years, whether it was Heath Ledger's domestic terrorist or Jared Leto's...well, whatever that was.

Talking to Empire about Arthur's continued evolution - he is, after all, about to meet "Lee" Quinzel - filmmaker Todd Phillips said, "We would never [make him the Clown Prince of Crime]. Because Arthur clearly is not a criminal mastermind. He was never that."

"Arthur has become this symbol to people," he adds. "This unwilling, unwitting symbol now paying for the crimes of the first film, but at the same time finding the only thing he ever wanted, which was love. That’s always what he’s been about, even though he’s...

Joker: Folie À Deux Empire Covers Reveal A Twisted New Look At Arthur Fleck And Harley Quinn
Image
Earlier this week, we were treated to a new trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux. As expected, the relationship between Arthur Fleck and Lee Quinzel will be a huge part of the sequel and both characters are featured on new Empire Magazine covers.

There's nothing too revealing here and while this franchise only uses the comics as a very loose basis for the stories being told, both Joker and Harley Quinn look to be in line with what you'd expect from both characters on screen.

With it now clear that "Lee" won't share a huge amount in common with Harley beyond an attraction to the Clown Prince of Crime, there's still a great deal of intrigue to see what Lady Gaga brings to the table. As for Joaquin Phoenix, we're eager to learn what tempted him back for a sequel.

While we expect this to be a busy weekend for...

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ trailer drops Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga into a dark musical [Watch]
Image
A Joker is born.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios released a new trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux” on Tuesday, giving fans their best look yet at the sequel to 2019’s hit psychological thriller “Joker.” The trailer emphasizes the bad romance between Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. The Joker, and Harleen Quinzel, a.k.a. Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). It gives a preview of the film’s musical elements.

The trailer flashes back to Harleen becoming enraptured with Arthur when she sees him on TV. “When I first saw Joker — when I saw you — for once in my life, I didn’t feel so alone anymore,” she tells him after they meet not-so-cute inside of a mental institution. Together, they dive into the deep end, painting their faces with clown makeup, and (presumably) imagining grand musical numbers, and dancing manically on stairs together, all of which have a sinister, menacing quality,...

New Joker: Folie À Deux Trailer's Closed Captions Confirm Plans For Another Iconic Batman Villain To Appear
Image
Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux earlier today (you can watch it here if you missed it) and on closer inspection, we've spotted a significant Easter Egg.

You'll no doubt remember that the first movie featured Thomas, Martha, and Bruce Wayne in a subplot which strongly hinted that Arthur Fleck might be Thomas' illegitimate son. Bruce's parents were then killed by a man wearing a clown mask during the final act, setting the stage for Bruce to become Batman...and to really hate Fleck for causing that uprising in Gotham City.

It remains to be seen whether the sequel picks up with that in any way, but the closed captions for the latest sneak peek confirm Harvey Dent will make an appearance.

Set photos showed Joker's supporters brandishing signs calling Dent a "clown." so we've long suspected he might appear. When it comes to who plays him,...

Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga Find Love, Create Chaos in New ‘Joker 2’ Trailer
Image
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are ready to “give the people what they want” in the new Joker 2 trailer.

In the latest glimpse of Joker: Folie À Deux, released Tuesday, director Todd Phillips teases what’s to come in the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker. In the new trailer, Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is finding himself being considered some sort of martyr and endured the “trial of the century.”

Throughout the trailer, Fleck deals with apparent stardom with Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn sharing that with Fleck for once she doesn’t feel so alone.

“You can do anything you want. You’re Joker,” she is overheard telling him in the trailer.

Phoenix’s Fleck/Joker is also seen in court yelling at everyone, “I will no longer allow any of you to keep me down!”

In Joker: Folie À Deux, Arthur Fleck is institutionalized at Arkham...

Joker: Folie À Deux Trailer Sees The Clown Prince Of Crime And Harley Quinn Make Their Mark On Gotham
Image
Warner Bros. has released the first full-length trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux and it appears Gotham City is all too willing to embrace Arthur Fleck after his chaotic actions in 2019's Joker.

Of course, it's hard to say how much of what we see here is real or simply in the Clown Prince of Crime's head; for example, he's shown dressed in full Joker garb in a courtroom and later hosting the Joker & Harley Show alongside Harley Quinn.

Many fans have wondered how this movie will continue the classic Batman villain's story and while there's still no sign of the Dark Knight, all signs point to this being another fascinating character study.

As for those musical elements, while they're certainly hinted at, Warner Bros. is being careful not to make them too obvious. Hollywood has shied away from marking musicals as, well, musicals in recent years so this isn't overly surprising.

2024 Venice Film Festival Predictions: Todd Phillips, Fabrice Du Welz & Pablo Larraín

Joker: Folie a Deux

Dir. Todd Phillips

Prod: Todd Phillips, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Joseph Garner

It would be kind of neat if the head jury person of the 2019 Venice Film Festival who feted Todd Phillips by bestowing the the Golden Lion for Joker would somehow face off in competition with her docu. After having seen the trailer flaunting the acting (plus singing) chops of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, this studio film has a legit shot at a second Lion. Along with Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz, this takes us back to the moment after the murder of Murray Franklin live on television.…...
