Released on February 15, The Gorge attracted attention thanks to its two leads, well-known director, interesting premise, and blend of genres.

Set in a dystopian world, The Gorge follows Levi (Teller) and Drasa (Taylor-Joy), two snipers who keep watch over a gorge separating their two watchtowers. Both are unsure of what exactly they are protecting their two nations from, as they soon grow closer despite the distance from each other. Eventually, their growing relationship causes the truth...

Matthew Rhys to Star in Katie Dippold's 'Widow's Bay' Series For AppleTV+
Image
Matthew Rhys is moving to New England and becoming a mayor — on television, of course. The Perry Masonand The Americans star is set to lead AppleTV+'s new, supernatural series Widow's Bay, from accomplished and prolific writer Katie Dippold, who's penned such films as The Heat and Ghostbusters, and also wrote 31 episodes of the iconic sitcom Parks and Recreation. Also involved in the stellar team? Director Hiro Murai, whom many know from his breathtaking work on Atlanta, Station Eleven, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Anyone else allowing themselves to get a little bit excited about this one?

According to Deadline, the new series has a decidedly supernatural bent — appropriate given Dippold's last feature script was Disney's The Haunted Mansion. The show takes place on a mysterious and perhaps cursed New England island with aspirations of Nantucket-level tourism grandeur. However, its superstitious citizens — led by a mayor (Rhys) who doesn't exactly...

“They’re just a human being’s journey that happens to have breasts”: Sandra Bullock Doesn’t Consider ‘The Heat’ to be Female Comedy for a Reason
Image
Sandra Bullock played FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn alongside Melissa McCarthy’s Boston Detective Shannon Mullins in the 2013 buddy-cop film The Heat. Agent Ashburn and Detective Mullins reluctantly partner together to take down a drug lord in this Paul Feig film. The chemistry between the film’s lead pair proved crucial in its commercial success in theaters.

Despite its label as a female comedy, Bullock believed that director Feig didn’t create “women’s stories” with his films. Besides Bullock and McCarthy, the film also featured Demián Bichir, Marlon Wayans, Michael Rapaport, and Jane Curtin in the cast.

Javier Bardem to Star in ‘Cape Fear’ Series From Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg at Apple
Image
Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are set to executive produce a new Javier Bardem-led thriller series for Apple TV+ based on “Cape Fear,” a film with ties to both Scorsese and Spielberg.

Apple TV+ has granted a series order for “Cape Fear,” which will be written and showrun by Nick Antosca. Antosca will executive produce alongside Scorsese, Spielberg and Bardem.

The series is based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioners,” which inspired Gregory Peck’s 1962 film adaptation, “Cape Fear.” In the late 1980s, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct a new adaptation, but he passed the film over to friend Scorsese so he could make “Schindler’s List” instead. Scorsese cast Robert De Niro in the role that will be filled by Bardem, and the resulting 1991 film “Cape Fear” was a commercial success and scored Oscar nods for De Niro and Juliette Lewis.

Trump Supporters Made 2016 Ghostbusters a Political Statement Says Director
Image
Filmmaker Paul Feig says that Trump supporters made the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot into a topic of political discourse. Ghostbusters, later retitled Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, was directed by Feig and rebooted the iconic 1980s sci-fi horror comedy franchise with an all-female cast that included Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. While plenty of movies get reboots and remakes, 2016's Ghostbusters was a media nightmare, with people targeting it from the second the movie was announced before a single frame of footage was shot.

During an interview with The Guardian, Feig touched on the rough political landscape that 2016's Ghostbusters came out in. He noted that the movie's release during the presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump made it a lightning rod for controversy, mainly when Donald Trump decided to weigh in on the film on his Instagram in January 2015, shortly after it was announced. Feig...

Horror comedy series Widow's Bay receives series order from Apple TV+
Image
Another day, another small-town mayor refusing to acknowledge that his town could be in grave danger. That's the gist of newly ordered-to-series Widow's Bay, an upcoming 10-episode horror-comedy set for Apple TV+.

1428 Elm has learned that the show will be created by Katie Dippold, best known for writing The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Filmmaker Hiro Murai (Atlanta) will direct the pilot episode.

Apple didn't share much else about Widow's Bay just yet, unfortunately, except that it will be produced in-house by Apple Studios and the series is set in a cursed New England town. As mentioned above, something supernatural starts to threaten town residents but the mayor refuses to believe anything is wrong. Sounds like maybe the mayor from Amity Island relocated.

Dippold is credited as the showrunner and creator of the new series, which she also executive produces. Murai will executive produce as well, alongside Carver Karaszewski and Claudia Shin.

Director of Divisive Disney Ride Movie Candidly Reflects on 'Difficult' Release
Image
Justin Simien, the director of the 2023 film adaptation of the iconic Disney Ride, Haunted Mansion, has shared his take on why the film was heavily affected by the decision to release it during a rocky moment in Hollywood. It was released on July 15, 2023, a couple of days after the SAG-AFTRA strike officially began. Of course, the premiere featured no one from the movie, as no performers were allowed to promote their films in any way. Simien has now shared his take on the release strategy: "I have some mixed feelings about it, to be honest."

2023's version of Haunted Mansion was based on a script by Katie Dippold. It tells the story of a single mother and her son who decide to seek the help of a skeptic astrophysicist in order to clean their newly acquired home of spirits who don't want to leave. A psychic, a priest, and...

Star Wars Director Learned His Lando Series Was Canceled in the Worst Way
Image
Donald Glover's journey as Lando Calrissian has been a twisty path from Solo: A Star Wars Story. A Disney+ spinoff series was announced, and Lando was very far along when Glover announced a creative change. Then it was announced that Lando would be a movie and not a series after all, and now it seems Disney has shelved it altogether, which was all heartbreaking to filmmaker Justin Simien, who was set to direct. He found out in the worst way. "It became clear. They probably wont want me to say this, but I knew it was official when I read it in the trades. But the writing was super on the wall," Simien told Collider. He explained how far along the project was:

It was pretty developed. Yeah, there was a Bible, there was concept art, there were scripts, but it just wasnt meant to be.

'Extremely Difficult': Haunted Mansion Director Addresses Disney Movie Flopping
Image
Disney's Haunted Mansion movie fell far short of box office expectations upon its release in 2023. Justin Simien, who directed the film, is still feeling mixed emotions about the film's shortcomings, admitting that it's been a bit difficult.

Per Collider, Simien addressed Haunted Mansion in a new interview to promote his MGM+ series Hollywood Black. With a $150 million budget, the film bombed with a haul at the box office of less than $118 million, and with marketing costs, Disney reportedly lost around $117 million on the project. Critics were also fairly harsh on the film, resulting in a Rotten Tomatoes score of 37%. However, the audience score is much higher at 84%, and that's one aspect of Haunted Mansion's performance that Simien appreciates.

'I Liked the Movie': Dan Aykroyd Defends 2016 Ghostbusters Reboot
Image
Ghostbusters franchise star Dan Aykroyd has come to the defense of the 2016 reboot, retroactively titled Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. Though Aykroyd was disappointed in the job he did as a producer behind the scenes, he said he loved how the movie turned out, referring to it as a film you "want to watch again."

After playing Ray Stantz in two Ghostbusters movies, Aykroyd saw the franchise get rebooted in 2016 by director Paul Feig. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call introduced an all-new cast of characters comprised of women in the four leads. Even before its release, the film was pummeled with heavy criticism, and the franchise has since gone back to its roots by featuring the original movies' characters in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire. Reflecting on the 2016 reboot, via People, Aykroyd noted how he disagreed with the movie's critics, explaining why he personally enjoyed Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.

Every Ghostbusters Movie, Ranked
Image
The "Ghostbusters" franchise has been kicking around since 1984, thanks to director Ivan Reitman and the comedic bona fides of primary cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (who also co-wrote the script), with a little help from Ernie Hudson as the blue collar guy who makes it easy for things to be explained to the audience. But the film series lay dormant for nearly 20 years, until Sony Pictures attempted to reboot the entire franchise from scratch in 2016 with Paul Feig's new "Ghostbusters," which would go on to get the subtitle "Answer the Call." More recently, "Ghostbusters" has been given new life, thanks to the nostalgic legacy-quel "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and a new narrative thread following the once-estranged family of the late Egon Spengler.

Among the five total "Ghostbusters" movies released so far, we have a fascinating spectrum of storytelling, both in quality and style. While the original paranormal-infused...

Every Ghostbuster Movie & TV Show, Ranked

When Dak Aykroyd and Harold Ramis penned the script for the original Ghostbusters nearly half a century ago, no one could have imagined the phenomenon the franchise would transform into. Admittedly, the films' popularity peaked in the late 80s and early 90s, but in the 2020s, the Ghostbusters IP is still going strong with the recent release of the newest film in the franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Much like the ghouls our favorite blue-collar ghost hunters love to bust, Ghostbusters has managed to stick around long past its presumed expiration date. With five films, two animated television series, and one iconic theme song sung by Ray Parker Jr, the supernatural franchise continues to break new ground four decades after its initial release.

Haunted Mansion gets its digital and Blu-ray release just in time for Halloween
Danny DeVito, Owen Wilson, Mike Benitez, Rosario Dawson, Chase Dillon, Tiffany Haddish, and LaKeith Stanfield in Haunted Mansion (2023)
Haunted Mansion didn’t have the strongest of showings this summer. Part of it is attributed to the scheduled release date. It was screened in theaters in the direct wake of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. This, unfortunately, made the Disney comedy a victim of the Barbie and Oppenheimer dual release that dominated the summer box office. Another element that some may draw from is the fact that it is a horror-themed film (albeit family-friendly) that is released in the summertime when people are less likely to gravitate towards the macabre.

However, there is a fail-safe for the underperformed film to find a new audience as the fall movie season starts, and Disney has just announced the premiere date for the home video release of Haunted Mansion, which makes it available for consumers in time for Halloween. The Justin Simien film will be available for home viewing on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray,...

Disney Unveils Haunted Mansion Blu-ray and DVD Release Details
Image
Haunted Mansion is coming to Blu-ray and DVD this October.

Per Collider, Disney fans will be able to purchase Haunted Mansion on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD beginning Oct. 17, with different collector's versions available at major retailers online and in stores. For instance, the limited edition SteelBook version will be found only at Best Buy while Walmart will have an exclusive collector's edition that comes with a limited edition enamel pin. The physical release comes after a disappointing theatrical run which saw Haunted Mansion gross just over $100 million at the global box office. With a reported budget of $150 million, Disney will seemingly not turn a profit from the 2023 reboot film, at least at the theatrical level.

Haunted Mansion comes to Disney+ on October 4, 2023.

Director Justin Simien’s adaptation of the popular theme park attraction is Disney’s second crack at the property, with Eddie Murphy starring in the previous adaptation back in 2003.

Meagan wrote in her review of the new Haunted Mansion for Bd, “Justin Simien and [writer] Katie Dippold joyfully recreate the feeling of hopping on a Doom Buggy, whisking audiences on a nonstop tour of supernatural whimsy, macabre humor, and heart.”

Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson, and Danny DeVito star, with Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota and Jared Leto as the Hatbox Ghost.

‘Haunted Mansion’ Materializes on Disney+ Just in Time for Halloween
Danny DeVito, Owen Wilson, Mike Benitez, Rosario Dawson, Chase Dillon, Tiffany Haddish, and LaKeith Stanfield in Haunted Mansion (2023)
“Haunted Mansion,” Disney’s second attempt at adapting its beloved theme park attraction as a live-action feature, will soon find a home on Disney+. The new movie — released theatrically this past July and starring Lakeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson and Tiffany Haddish — will debut on Disney’s streaming platform on Oct. 4, just in time for Halloween spooky season.

In this “Haunted Mansion,” Dawson plays a young single mother who moves into the titular abode, which is stuffed (of course) with 999 happy haunts. She calls on a variety of paranormal experts, including Stanfield (who does New Orleans ghost tours), Wilson (a priest) and Haddish (a psychic), along with Danny DeVito as a local history professor with a keen knowledge of the house and its tangled history.

Also, Jamie Lee Curtis shows up as Madame Leota, the iconic Haunted Mansion character (she’s the iconic medium-in-the-crystal ball from the attraction). As you might expect,...

Disney’s kid-friendly horror comedy, which is inspired by the classic theme park attraction, will hit the streamer on Oct. 4. Directed by Justin Simien, “Haunted Mansion” follows single mother Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her 9-year-old son (Chase Dillon), who enlist the help of so-called spiritual experts to exterminate their home of various ghosts, ghouls and ghastly creatures.

Coming 20 years after Eddie Murphy’s “The Haunted Mansion,” the new film stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto and more. Katie Dippold wrote the screenplay.

“Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary,” Variety film critic Peter Debruge wrote in his review. “Director Justin Simien (‘Dear White People’) leans more on comedy than horror,...

Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Movie Just Passed $100 Million at the Worldwide Box Office
Image
It’s now been well over a month since the summer premiere of Disney’s new Haunted Mansion movie in theaters, which opened to just $24 million domestically back in late July.

How has the movie been performing in the weeks since, you might be wondering?

As we inch closer to the Halloween season, Haunted Mansion has now managed to scare up $100 million worldwide, with $64 million of that total made here in the United States.

Unfortunately, the problem with Haunted Mansion is that Disney spent more than $100 million on the film’s production budget alone – and that’s not counting a big marketing spend.

According to Wikipedia, the film’s reported production budget was around $150 million, which means Haunted Mansion will definitely not be profitable in theaters.

Disney is likely hoping the film will drive Disney+ subscribers this Halloween season, but at this time we haven’t yet been provided with...

Haunted Mansion Cinematographer on Bringing Ghosts to Life
Image
The following contains spoilers for Haunted Mansion, now playing in theaters

Haunted Mansion -- Directed by Justin Simien with a Screenplay by Katie Dippold -- takes a new approach to the classic Disney attraction of the same name. Largely set in the ghost-infested building, the film focuses on the handful of unfortunate figures who find themselves caught in the orbit of a particularly dangerous fiend. The film blends a lot of tenors across its run-time, befitting an original ride that incorporated plenty of humor and horror to create something timeless.

The film boasts plenty of talent in front of the camera and behind it, with a talented cast and rock-solid crew helping bring new life to some of Disney's most infamous ghosts. During an interview with Cbr, Haunted Mansion Cinematographer Jeffrey Waldron broke down his personal history with the Disney Parks attraction that inspired the new film, incorporating elements from the experience into the adaptation,...

‘Haunted Mansion (2023)’ Review
Image
Stars: Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, Daniel Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto | Written by Katie Dippold | Directed by Justin Simien

Directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People), this disappointing comedy-horror is Disney’s second attempt at turning their popular theme park attraction into a movie franchise, following the disastrous 2003 Eddie Murphy vehicle. With a shorter, snappier running time, it could have been a fun ride – much like the attraction itself – but instead it’s a bloated, painfully dull and wildly uneven mess that quickly outstays its welcome, despite the efforts of its talented comic cast.

The film gets off to a bad start with a confusing jump from a meet-cute between astrophysicist Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) and haunted house tour guide (Charity Jordan) to a period some years later, where he is both an alcoholic and a haunted house tour guide operator himself,...

Haunted Mansion - Amber Wilkinson - 18548
Danny DeVito, Owen Wilson, Mike Benitez, Rosario Dawson, Chase Dillon, Tiffany Haddish, and LaKeith Stanfield in Haunted Mansion (2023)
We all know the feeling at a theme park when you’ve been on a ride and immediately want to jump on again. In Disney’s case, it just can’t get enough of its Haunted Mansion, a venerable ghost house experience that was first built at its theme park in 1969. It has had two goes at it before - the critically drubbed Eddie Murphy vehicle from 2003 and a Muppet version from 2021 that went straight to Disney+.

If anything, it feels like the studio has doubled down, expanding the ten-minute ride into a two-hour film - you can’t help but do the maths and figure out it might struggle to add up despite successful precedents like the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.

But given that the original ride is a basic ghost train, this ought to be a grand opportunity, for the writer Katie Dippold (Parks And Recreation) and director Justin.

Haunted Mansion Director Reveals Details of Guillermo del Toro's Scrapped Version
Image
Guillermo del Toro developed an early version of the Haunted Mansion adaptation, but it was scrapped by Disney. The director, Justin Siemen, wanted the movie to be true to the terrifying nature of classic Disney films and not pull any punches. Siemen took inspiration from movies like Ghostbusters, Neverending Story, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Little Shop of Horrors to create the specific environment and tone for the Haunted Mansion.

Haunted Mansion has been trying to make it back to the big screen for a while now, and Justin Siemen was not the only director attached to the project, since another acclaimed filmmaker was close to get behind the cameras, which would have end up delivering a different version of the movie.

Guillermo del Toro, known for building fantasy horror-style worlds, developed an early version of the Haunted Mansion adaptation but ended up being scrapped by Disney. Speaking with Empire Magazine...

The Haunted Mansion Movie Makes the Ride Horrifying

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA are currently striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, seeking equitable compensation for their invaluable contributions to the entertainment industry. Click here to read more of Cbr's ongoing coverage of the strikes.

The following contains spoilers for The Haunted Mansion, now playing in theaters.

Haunted Mansion relishes in bringing elements of the original Disney Parks attraction of the same name to the big screen, often with a deliberate attempt to invoke more horror than humor. That isn't to say the film's references can't be funny, but there's a darker element to Haunted Mansion's cameos and references, befitting the film's overall dark storyline. Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Scares Up $33 Million Worldwide 20 Years After Original Movie’s Release
Image
Instead of waiting for the fast-approaching Halloween season, Disney decided to position their new Haunted Mansion movie as a summer blockbuster, and that may have proven to be a massive mistake on their part. Here in the United States, the film found itself in the #3 spot on the box office charts this weekend, scaring up $24.2 million in 3,740 theaters.

Worldwide, the film’s opening weekend total was $33.3 million.

These numbers may not seem all that bad until you realize that Haunted Mansion‘s production budget was reportedly $150 million, and that’s not even factoring in the massive marketing spend attached to the movie. The general rule of thumb is that big studio movies need to earn roughly 2.5/3x their production budget before they start seeing profits, and it’s unlikely that Haunted Mansion is going to reach that point in theaters. Disney is likely looking to bring the film home to Disney+ for Halloween,...

Yes, That’s Jared Leto in ‘Haunted Mansion’
Image
When it came to finding a villain for Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” horror comedy, the obvious choice was the legendary 19th-century Hatbox Ghost from the popular Disneyland/Disney World attraction. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) and screenwriter Katie Dippold (the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot) even invented a spooky New Orleans backstory for him.

Voiced by Oscar winner Jared Leto, the Hatbox Ghost became a creepy, Voldemort-inspired trickster. But creating the look of the character (designed by Dneg and animated by Ilm) provided its own set of challenges apart from other 998 apparitions that haunt the Mansion. “The character itself went through many different iterations because its involvement grew as our movie was being developed and created,” production VFX supervisor Edwin Rivera (“Joker”) told IndieWire.

“And I think the realization was that he made for a great bad guy,” he continued, “and we wanna see a lot more of him. So...
