Roy Thomas Baker Dies: Producer On ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ & Other Classics Was 78
Image
Roy Thomas Baker, the prolific producer who worked with the likes of Queen, The Cars, David Bowie, Devo, Journey and The Smashing Pumpkins, has died according to The New York Times. He was 78.

Baker is best known for his work on one of rock’s greatest and most enduring anthems: Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The sprawling operatic song proved a challenge to record, especially given the technology of the time. Baker and the band had to transfer the tune’s many overlapping tracks across eight generations of 24-track tape, which required close to 200 tracks for overdubs.

“We had to record it in three separate units,” Baker later recalled. “We did the whole beginning bit, then the whole middle bit and then the whole end. It was complete madness. The middle part started off being just a couple of seconds, but Freddie kept coming in with more ‘Galileos’ and we kept...

Diving into the Musical Madness of 1983’s Rock Opera ‘Rock & Rule’
Image
With the release of films like Mad God and The Spine of Night (not to mention a poignant reminder by Guillermo del Toro at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony), it seems like Western audiences are one step closer to catching up with the rest of the world in realizing that animation is more than capable of telling complex, adult-oriented stories.

However, this doesn’t mean that older animated films avoided mature themes and experimental narratives – it’s just that many of these movies turned out to be huge flops, with the very best of them destined to become cult classics decades after they underperformed at the box-office. And when it comes to animated flops, there are few films more remarkable than Clive A. Smith’s beautiful disaster, 1983’s Rock & Rule. An unprecedented financial failure, this oddball rock opera would go on to entertain fans of weird cinema for decades...

One Tree Hill: All 12 Real-Life Artists Who Performed At Tric & Karen’s Cafe
Image
Real-life artists were woven into the fabric of One Tree Hill through powerful needle drops at key moments and musically-inclined characters. Many real-life artists performed at venues like Karen's Café and Tric, including Gavin DeGraw, Sheryl Crow, and The Wreckers. Fall Out Boy and Kid Cudi were the only non-actor musicians to perform on the show multiple times, and their songs were heavily featured throughout the series.

One Tree Hill had some outstanding music moments, especially when it came to performances from real-life artists. Crucial to the fabric of One Tree Hill, music was woven into the show through powerful needle drops at pivotal One Tree Hill moments, as well as musically-inclined characters like Peyton Sawyer (played by Hilarie Burton) and Haley James Scott (played by Bethany Joy Lenz). For actors on the show who were also musicians in real life, music was incorporated into their characters and storylines, which...

Event Report: Reflecting on the Mesmerizing Immersive Experiences and Spellbinding Screenings of the 2023 Overlook Film Festival!
Image
As the sun bled out its final rays of warmth on New Orleans on March 30th, we gathered in bloodthirsty droves around the Prytania Uptown Theatre, eager to sink our teeth into the latest cinematic incarnation of Count Dracula with the world premiere of Renfield, featuring the Count himself, Nicolas Cage, in attendance. Standing in line wearing my The Lost Boys T-shirt and carrying a pair of vampire teeth in my pocket (I planned on inserting them over my incisors later that night at the Vampire Ball), I couldn’t believe that another Overlook Film Festival was upon us. I was still reeling from my first experiences with Overlook back in 2022, and about 10 months later, it was already time to return for another round of what I’ve come to know as “summer camp for horror fans.”

This year, the lineup was bigger than ever, and looking up and down...

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun (1986)
Tony Scott's Wallet Got A Workout Behind The Scenes Of Top Gun
Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun (1986)
The 1980s have become coalesced in America's cultural memory as a decade of excess above all else. Sure, the era produced a number of notably kooky, how-did-that-ever-happen trends in fashion, music, and pop culture, but permeating just about everything is the sense of largesse, which in turn has helped the decade's style remain so iconic. In other words, nothing about the '80s was subtle.

One of the least subtle blockbusters of the decade is 1986's "Top Gun." The film is almost aggressively excessive, with a wall-to-wall pop rock soundtrack filled with big names like Kenny Loggins and Cheap Trick blaring under shots of Tom...

Win Over The Edge on Blu-ray
Image
To mark the release of Over the Edge, out now, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.

Over The Edge – available now on Blu-ray from Arrow Video – is an incendiary ode to teen rebellion that quickly became a Gen X/punk-rock touchstone, and a key influence on filmmakers such as Richard Linklater and musicians like Kurt Cobain (who often cited it as his favourite film). Armed with a classic ‘70s rock soundtrack, energetic direction by Jonathan Kaplan (White Line Fever) and an intelligent script by Tim Hunter (River’s Edge) and Charlie Haas (Matinee), Over The Edge still packs a righteously powerful punch today, and makes its worldwide Blu-Ray debut with brand new bonus features interviewing the cast and crew.

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)

The first wave of contestants in the Top 14 were revealed at the end of the April 7 episode of this revival on ABC hosted Ryan Seacrest. In episodes taped weeks ago, the remaining score of artists from the Top 40 were divided into two groups. Beatles Engineer Geoff Emerick Dies at 72
Tony Sokol Oct 3, 2018

Geoff Emerick helped change the way sound is captured in the recording studio.

The Beatles were well known for flouting official rules in order to push the limits of what could be captured on tape, and Geoff Emerick was one of their greatest enablers. Recording engineer and producer Geoff Emerick, best known for his work with the Beatles, died of a heart attack at the age of 72, according to Variety.

“Today, at around 2’o’clock, I was making my way back from Arizona to Los Angeles to go pick up Geoff so we could transport some gold records and platinum plaques to our show in Tucson,” Emerick's manager William Zabaleta said in a statement.

“While on the phone with Geoff Emerick, he had complications, dropped the phone. At that point I called 911, but by the time they got there it was too late. So Geoff suffered from...

Fats Domino
Fats Domino, New Orleans Music Legend, Dead at 89
Fats Domino
Fats Domino, the amiable rock 'n' roll pioneer whose steady, pounding piano and easy baritone helped change popular music while honoring the traditions of the Crescent City died Tuesday at the age of 89, the Jefferson Parish Coroner says.

The New Orleans musician's daughter said he died peacefully while surrounded by family and friends, CBS affiliate Wwl-tv reports.

In appearance, he was no Elvis Presley. He stood 5-feet-5 and weighed more than 200 pounds, with a wide, boyish smile and a haircut as flat as an album cover. But Domino sold more than 110 million records, with hits including "Blueberry Hill," ''Ain't It a Shame" and other standards of rock 'n' roll.

Photos: Stars We've Lost in 2017

He was one of the first 10 honorees named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Rolling Stone Record Guide likened him to Benjamin Franklin, the beloved old man of a revolutionary movement. The magazine listed Domino at No. 25 in its list of...

Fats Domino
Fats Domino, Rock and Roll Pioneer, Passes Away at 89
Fats Domino
The world of music and entertainment is in mourning once again after a true legend has passed away. Music icon Fats Domino, who helped shape rock and roll and pop music as we know it, passed away early this morning at the age of 89. Mark Bone, chief investigator with the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, coroner's office, confirmed that the music legend died of natural causes at 3:30 Am on Tuesday. The musician leaves behind a legacy that few can come close to in the music industry.

Fats Domino was born Antoine Domino Jr. on February 26, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of a violin player who was one of nine children in their large family. His cousin left an old upright piano in his house, which lead him to teach himself a number of popular piano styles such as ragtime, blues and boogie-woogie as a child, with Fats Waller and Albert Ammons...

“Inferno”: Trippy & Surreal ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Music Video Featuring David Hasselhoff
“Guardians of the Galaxy” and music go hand in hand. James Gunn‘s series has had two incredibly well-chosen soundtracks, or mix-tapes if you will, filled with ’70s and ’80s guilty-pleasure pop cornerstones. Half the fun of watching these movies is wondering what song Gunn will choose next to move his story forward. It’s an indelibly pleasurable experience to be delighted by breathless action and, at the same time, bop your head up and down to, say, Fleetwood Mac‘s “The Chain,” or Cheap Trick‘s “Surrender.”

Following in that tradition, James Gunn and Marvel have given us a real ditty today.

Doritos Made a Bag That Plays Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Soundtrack
Um... What? Did I hear that right? As I was looking for some interesting things to post, I came across some information that Doritos has made a hybrid Doritos bag and music player that looks like a tape deck on the bag. The best part is, it plays the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack. Of all the things I never expected to happen, this is probably the top of the list.

Doritos and Marvel have a cross promotion going, but who would have thought they would make a Doritos bag that plays music!? In some strange way, it makes sense. A strong element in the Guardians of the Galaxy films is music. There is a tape deck that plays Star-Lord's music that has both an important role in the film and has great tunes for the film. Even the title of the film is called Vol. 2, reminiscent of an album release.

The film opens in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is filled with great action, humor and performances, but it is also infused with a new mixed tape and soundtrack, a dynamic that resonated deeply with audiences in the first film as evidenced by the success of the soundtrack album. The Grammy-nominated “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. The album was certified Platinum by the R.I.A.A.

Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Michael Rooker, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Elizabeth Debicki in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
David Hasselhoff is officially in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 -- well, on the soundtrack, at least.

The former Baywatch star and '80s pop sensation provided the vocals for the only original track of the movie's Awesome Mix Vol. 2, and he opened up to Et about how the song, "Guardian's Inferno," came about.

"You know, I asked [director] James Gunn why he chose me. He said, 'When I was 8 years old, I saw a show called Knight Rider [and] since that day I've always wanted to meet you and to kind of live by the laws of the Knight Rider," Hasselhoff told Et's Cameron Mathison at the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Wednesday.

Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 2 Song List Revealed
James Gunn
A few weeks ago, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director James Gunn revealed that the highly-anticipated soundtrack Awesome Mix Vol. 2 will be released in the U.S. on April 28. As it turns out, fans in the U.K. will be able to purchase this soundtrack a full week earlier, and with just two days to the U.K. release, Marvel has finally unveiled the official track list. There will be 14 songs featured on this soundtrack, some of which we've already heard on the previously-released trailers thus far.

The Marvel U.K. & Ireland Twitter account unveiled the track list today through a poster featuring Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) holding up a cassette tape, with the "set list" taped above him. This image confirms that songs from the previous Guardians 2 trailers, "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac and "Fox on the Run" by Sweet are on the soundtrack, but other songs used in trailers and TV spots,...

The Contents Of Awesome Mix Vol. 2 Have Been Revealed Ahead Of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2; Chris Pratt Teases Star-Lord’s Future
From “Spirit in the Sky” to Blue Swede’s infectious “Hooked on a Feeling” – a song that has since become synonymous with Marvel’s galactic anti-heroes – the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy was arguably the most crowd-pleasing element of James Gunn’s 2014 sleeper hit. And that’s really saying something, given the film featured a talking tree and a warrior that struggled to wrap his head around the concept of a metaphor.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 now teetering on the verge of its theatrical release, the level of interest in Star-Lord and the crew has grown astronomically in the past three years, though if there’s one ingredient that James Gunn has carried over from the first movie, it’s fist-pumping power ballads. Now, Rolling Stone has officially cracked open Awesome Mix Vol. 2 to reveal the songs set to feature throughout Guardians 2.

To his credit, James Gunn...

Shawn Mendes Reveals the Real Meaning of His Hit Song ‘Mercy’ on New Episode of Front and Center
Shawn Mendes
While Shawn Mendes knows each of his fans will interpret his lyrics differently, the teen pop sensation’s intended message with hit single “Mercy” might not be what they’d expect.

“‘Mercy,’ I love conceptually, because I feel like you can either think about it as if it were a girl – which it sounds like it could be about a girl – but I like to picture it as pleading for mercy for my career, type of thing,” Mendes explains in a new Front and Center interview from the Melrose Ballroom in Queens, New York.

Mendes, 18, says that the tiring lifestyle...

Yoshiki at 75th Golden Globe Awards
'We Are X' looks like a must-see documentary
Yoshiki at 75th Golden Globe Awards
Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. There's been a couple great documentaries about musicians from our North American continent not finding success here in America or Canada but generating a huge following in other places. Searching for Sugar Man and Anvil! The Story of Anvil are my two favorites. It's an interesting phenomenon. Think of the band Cheap Trick, who did okay in the U.S but were huge in Japan. In fact, "But they're huge in Japan.." has become a rock cliche. But what about a Japanese band that's so good, it's not unreasonable to wonder why they aren't huge everywhere else? That's the subject of We Are X. It appears the main visionary behind the band is the drummer Yoshiki, who is willing to push himself to the brink for his music. There...

Movie Review: Everybody Wants Some!!
Adolescence gets a loudmouthed love letter with Everybody Wants Some!!, the latest outing from writer/director Richard Linklater. Dropping the grandiose ambition of Boyhood (2014) and returning to his Dazed and Confused (1993) groove, the Texas filmmaker takes fans back to the days of crop tops, Van Halen, and mustaches to die for. Marketed as a “spiritual sequel” to the stoner classic, and swapping out the last day of school for the weekend before class, Everybody Wants Some!! funnels its story through the keg stand of a college baseball team. As such, former athlete Linklater straps the gloves on and knocks this hilarious outing clear over the center field fence.

From the very start, this movie puts out good vibes. With “My Sharona” thumping through stereo speakers, freshman Jake Bradford (Blake Jenner) cruises into college town circa 1980, flowing with loud personas and even louder hairstyles. Put up in a boarding house with his teammates,...
