Canceled Netflix TV Shows That Are Still Worth Watching
Image
Netflix's first original shows went on for a while. Early, revolutionary hits like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" endured for many seasons, thanks to the streamer giving them a chance to find an audience and develop their worlds fully. A few years in, though, Netflix became known for its willingness to give each and every show the chop. If your show is not a massive hit when it drops, it seems, they're no longer willing to invest in your success by letting you stick around. It's a shame, as many canceled Netflix shows might've become something truly great had they been given more of a shot.

But ... is television only worthwhile if it goes on ad infinitum? In all this "Netflix cancels things too early" discourse, there's a sense that television is only worth watching if it all ends — preferably many years from now — with a pitch-perfect final episode,...

Emmy Nominees Mj Rodriguez and Hannah Waddingham Celebrate at TV Academy Party Ahead of Awards Show
Image
It may not have been as big and celebrity-filled as it usually is, but the TV Academy’s annual pre-Emmy party for performer nominees on Friday night was still a star-studded affair.

“Pose” star Mj Rodriguez, who goes into the Emmys on Sunday as the first trans woman to be nominated for an Emmy in a lead acting category, said she has been receiving a steady stream of texts from co-stars Billy Porter (who is also nominated) and Indya Moore since the start of the weekend. “I just want to constantly keep making that change,” Rodriguez told me on the red carpet. “I want to constantly keep making history. I want to be at the front of change.”

Rodriguez said she is proof that trans women are making inroads in Hollywood. “I am testimony that it is possible,” she said. “There’s no excuses. The door is wide open and...

How the Bdsm Community’s Criticism of ‘Bonding’ Inspired Change in Season 2
Image
In the penultimate episode of the second season of Netflix’s “Bonding,” Pete, aka Master Carter (Brendan Scannell), delivers a stand-up comedy set that his best friend and employer-dominatrix, Tiff, aka Mistress May (Zoe Levin), says he did not have permission to share because he is not truly of the community. In the next minute, an agent in the audience calls it “a hilarious take on a world I know nothing about.” These two reactions, while diametrically opposed in emotional delivery, are ultimately saying the same thing: Pete has power and a platform to share secrets of the Bdsm world, but that comes with great responsibility because many watching and listening to him will take his word — and only his word — as gospel.

Such was the case when “Bonding” first premiered on the streamer in April 2019. Creator Rightor Doyle, who once worked as an assistant-slash-bodyguard for a dominatrix, turned some...

Doyle will continue to serve as executive producer, writer, and director in season 2. Anonymous Content’s Dara Gordon, Nina Soriano, and Jacob Perlin and Blackpills’ Patrick Holzman are also executive producers.

'Bonding': TV Review
Brendan Scannell
Pete (Brendan Scannell) and Tiff (Zoe Levin) were best buds in high school, but have drifted apart. Rightor Doyle, the creator, writer and director of the zippy if strained new Netflix series, Bonding, introduces the pair at the awkward moment their friendship is rekindled — in the basement of a Manhattan Bdsm club where Tiff is now a dominatrix. It's a fortuitous reunion. Pete, an aspiring, stage-fright-prone comic, just happens to need some extra funds, so Tiff conscripts him into service as her leather-wearing, riding-crop-brandishing assistant.

Doyle based this scenario on his own experience, and the seven ...

Sex Workers Aren’t Happy With the New Netflix Show About Dominatrixes
The Twitter account for Mistress May shows an alabaster-skinned, dark-haired woman in a bustier, holding a riding crop and staring suggestively at the camera. “Welcome to my office. I’m Mistress May. And I didn’t give you permission to @ me,” her bio reads. At first glance, it looks much like any other dominatrix profile on Twitter, with one glaring difference: Mistress May primarily tweets links to positive reviews of the Netflix show Bonding, which was released on April 24th, because Mistress May is a fictional Twitter account created by Netflix to promote the show.

Rightor Doyle’s ‘Bonding’ Short-Form Dark Comedy Series Picked Up By Netflix
Netflix has picked up Bonding, the seven-episode short-form dark comedy series from Rightor Doyle (Barry). Originally announced as blackpills original to run on the digital platform, the series starring Zoe Levin (Palo Alto) and Brendan Scannell (Heathers) will instead be distributed by Netflix next year as a global original series.

Filmed on location in New York last fall with backspills and Anonymous Content producing, Bonding had its premiere at Outfest this past summer and was screened at other festivals. According to sources, blackpills had an option to put it on their platform but instead producers brought it to Netflix, which bought the series fully produced and there will be no editing on it.

Written, directed and executive produced/showrun by Doyle, Bonding, whose episodes are 12-18 min in length, is loosely based on his life experiences. It centers on the relationship between former high-school BFFs, Pete (Scannell), a recently out gay man,...

Paramount Network to Air ‘Heathers’ Series Over Five Days
Grace Victoria Cox and James Scully in Heathers (2018)
The “Heathers” TV series is finally going to make it to air.

The Paramount Network is planning to release the first season of the show ahead of Halloween, but with edits. Beginning Oct. 25, the cable network will air two episodes a night until Oct. 29. The 10-episode series has been condensed down to nine, with certain scenes edited out . The finale will be followed by the premiere of a new Heather’s themed-episode of “Lip Sync Battle” with series stars Melanie Field and Brendan Scannell.

The entire series will also be made available for streaming on the network’s app and website beginning Oct. 22.

“I am beyond excited that American audiences will finally get to see ‘Heathers,'” said series showrunner Jason Micallef. “Obviously I wish fans could see the tenth episode but the producers and I felt strongly about not changing anything in it, and so, it’s been considered too controversial for U.

‘Heathers’: Shelved Reboot Series To Air On Paramount Network With Edits
Grace Victoria Cox and James Scully in Heathers (2018)
Four months after Paramount Network scrapped its Heathers reboot, based on the cult movie, the Viacom cable network has scheduled the controversial series in a week-long marathon event beginning October 25.

The high school satire, which contains violent scenes and tackles suicide, has undergone cuts, bringing the number of episodes from 10 to 9. The finale included the famous scene from the movie where the high school is blown up. It is no longer in the show, and I hear the final two episodes were combined to create a cliffhanger. In episode 5, the content in a first-person video game, originally featuring teachers holding guns, was also changed.

Heathers will premiere with two episodes on October 25, followed by two new episodes each night for five consecutive nights through Monday, October 29. The final episode will be followed by the premiere of a new Heathers-themed-episode of Lip Sync Battle with Melanie Field (Heather Chandler) and...

A post shared by ShannenDoherty (@theshando) on Nov 22, 2016 at 10:01am Pst

If you were looking forward to the reboot of Heathers, based on the 1988 cult classic, we have bad news. Keith Cox, president of development at Paramount Network, released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter announcing the news that the series is no longer a go. The decision was made out of respect for the string of school shootings this year, including the most recent tragedy in Santa Fe, TX.

"This was a very difficult decision. We had multiple meetings, and in the end, we didn't feel comfortable right now airing the series," Cox shared. "This is a bold move and we stand behind it." Cox went on to explain, "This is a high school show, we're blowing up the school, there are guns in the school, it's a satire...

If you've been waiting to watch the Heathers TV show, you may have a long wait ahead of you. ‘Heathers’ Reboot Series Pulled at Paramount Network
Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Heathers (1989)
The planned series version of “Heathers” will not air on Paramount Network as planned, Variety has confirmed.

The move to scrap the series entirely comes after it was pushed from its original March 7 launch date in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida in February. It was then set to debut on July 10, but the debate around gun control and school shootings has not abated since, stoked again when another gunman killing 10 people at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, earlier this month.

The show was originally ordered at fellow Viacom network TV Land before moving over to Paramount Network (formerly Spike TV) last year. The show, based on the 1988 movie of the same name, is described a pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day, featuring a group of all-new Heathers, who have the same character names from the original film, but this time, the outcasts...

‘Heathers’ Reboot Not Moving Forward At Paramount Network
Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Heathers (1989)
Paramount Network has opted not to move forward with its Heathers reboot, Deadline has confirmed. The new Heathers was initially scheduled to premiere March 7, but was delayed out of respect to the victims, families and others affected by the deadly shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fl, which claimed 17 lives. The premiere was later set for July 10.

Paramount Network’s decision was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The satirical reboot of the 1980s cult film is set at a high school and contains violent scenes. The network “didn’t feel comfortable” airing the series, given the current climate, according to THR.

The original film, written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann, centered on Veronica (Winona Ryder) and her rebel boyfriend J.D. (Christian Slater) and their trials and tribulations dealing with the social order in high school.

The new Heathers is a pitch-black comedy...

‘Heathers’ Dropped by Paramount Network, Will Be Shopped Elsewhere
Paramount Network and parent company Viacom have opted not to air the shelved “Heathers” adaptation, instead planning to shop the series elsewhere.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount development exec Keith Cox said some of the show’s content — guns in the classroom, the explosion of the school at the end the season — was deemed unfit to air on the younger-skewing network in the wake of the Parkland shooting.

“We had multiple meetings, and in the end, we didn’t feel comfortable right now airing the series and I’m not sure when there might be a time that we as a youthful brand at Viacom would feel comfortable,” said Cox.

‘Heathers’ New Premiere Date Announced
Paramount Network has set the new premiere date for their “Heathers” TV series for July 10. The announcement was made on social media Tuesday.

The series was originally set to release in March, but the Viacom-owned network decided to postpone the show in the wake of the Parkland shooting in Florida.

“Paramount Network’s original series ‘Heathers’ is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence,” the network said at the time. “While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year.”

However, the pilot of the series, which is loosely based off the 1988 movie starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, was posted on its website back in February. It was subsequently taken down after the announcement to postpone.

The dark comedy is set in the present day and stars Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, Melanie Field as the body-positive mean girl Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as the genderqueer Heather Duke and Jasmine Mathews as the biracial lesbian Heather McNamara.

‘Search Party’ Writers Debut Short Film ‘Men Don’t Whisper,’ About Two Gay Guys Who Pretend to Be Straight
Search Party (2016)
“Search Party,” the crime comedy that turned hipster ennui into a truly perilous prospect, is the best show about millennials on TV. After just two seasons, the show has received widespread critical acclaim for building wry humor and hate-to-love characters into a refreshingly gripping mystery. There is far less mystery (but just as many laughs) in “Men Don’t Whisper,” a new short film from Charles Rogers, who co-created “Search Party,” and Jordan Firstman, a writer on the show. The short, which premiered at SXSW before making its online debut Wednesday, follows a gay couple who attend a sales conference and attempt to sleep with two women in order to prove their masculinity.

Partners in real life, Firstman and Rogers play the movie’s lead characters, Reese and Peyton. Like gay characters in “Search Party,” they don’t conform to gay stereotypes often found onscreen, though in a more understated way.

Heathers Review: Wickedly Witty, Paramount Network's Reboot Is Killer
Grace Victoria Cox and James Scully in Heathers (2018)
Dear diary, color me impressed. As a huge fan of 1989’s Heathers, I sat down to watch the first five episodes of Paramount (fka Spike TV) Network’s reboot fully expecting to pull a muscle from rolling my eyes so hard and so often. Instead, version 2.0 of the black comedy made me feel like I’d had a brain tumor for brunch for ever having doubted the potential of the anthology series (premiering Wednesday, March 7, at 10/9c).

Heathers does what I imagined — no, make that what I was positive — was impossible. On one hand, it pays enough homage to the...

Dig out your croquet set, because Michael Lehmann's cult dark comedy Heathers is coming to life soon as a TV series reboot on the Paramount Network, and ahead of the series' March 7th premiere, we have a look at a new clip from the show that offers a glimpse into the tense high school hierarchy of the Heathers.

"Heathers, based on the killer cult classic, premieres March 7th on the Paramount Network.

Starring Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, James Scully as Jd, Melanie Field as Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as Heather Duke, and Jasmine Mathews as Heather McNamara.

Heathers is an hour-long pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day, based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name. The much-anticipated reboot perfectly blends drama, love, rivalry, and comedy into a modern-day masterpiece."

Red-Band Trailer For The Wild-Looking Series Reboot of Heathers Features First Look at Shannen Doherty
Paramount has released the first full red-band trailer for their upcoming series reboot of the classic 1988 film Heathers. This is said to be a "pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day." It's definitely not the version of the film that you remember. This is a complete reimagining but it deals with the same issues, and it looks pretty wild.

The original film focused on Veronica (Winona Ryder) and her rebel boyfriend J.D. (Christian Slater), dealing with the social order in high school. The update features a new set of popular-yet-evil Heathers. Only this time around the outcasts have become the high school royalty. This definitely makes for an interesting twist.

Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) will be portrayed by Jasmine Mathews; Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty in the film) is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath (Brendan Scannell); and Heather Chandler (originally...

Catty new trailer arrives for the Paramount Networks TV reboot of Heathers
Author: Zehra Phelan

Paramount Network is gearing up for the upcoming release of hour-long anthology reboot series, Heathers, with a new catty and drama-filled trailer that would make the original Heathers proud.

Related: Heathers promo trailer

Whilst having the same dark tone as the original cult classic, the new version will move away from the three super-rich catty teenagers by introducing an overweight girl (Melanie Field), a black lesbian (Jasmine Mathews) and a gender-queer male (Brendan Scannell) hoping to speak to today’s generation of young adults and filling those much-needed diversity roles.

The trailer gives us a glimpse of the new teenage brats, ruling the school in a cruel and vicious manner and we even get a glimpse of an original Heather in the form of Shannon Doherty.

The show stars Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, James Scully as Jd, Melanie Field as Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as Heather Duke,...
