‘Three Pines’ Amplifies Indigenous Voices in Cinematic First Season Louise Penny Fans Will Love: TV Review
Image
Adapting a beloved book series into a television show that doesn’t lose the author’s carefully crafted nuance is a tough job. Doing so while expanding upon that world and elevating the original work is an even more challenging task.

Yet “Three Pines” does both with aplomb.

“Three Pines” is based on Louise Penny’s award-winning mystery novels, which feature an array of quirky French Canadian locals who are constantly embroiled in another whodunnit.

At the heart of these stories is Inspector Armand Gamache — a crime-solving gentleman who is to fiction-loving Canadians what Poirot or Holmes are to the Brits (and perhaps what Benoit Blanc is becoming to Americans). Casting the inspector was key, but Alfred Molina captures his gentle essence with kind eyes and an observational stillness from the moment he appears onscreen.

The fictional town is inspired by Penny’s hometown of Knowlton, Que., a tourist hotspot...

’19-2: Complete Series One’ DVD Review
Stars: Adrian Holmes, Jared Keeso, Dan Petronijevic, Benz Antoine, Mylène Dinh-Robic, Conrad Pla, Maxim Roy, Bruce Ramsay, Laurence Leboeuf | Directed by Louis Choquette, Erik Canuel, Daniel Grou

19-2? Precinct 19, Car 2. It’s simple as that. A series title that upholds a long-standing tradition of cop shows throughout the years that use designators in their titles, from the likes of Car 54 Where Are You? to the more recent 10-8: Officers on Duty. 19-2 also continues the more modern tradition of the gritty cop drama, heavily influenced by the likes of cable TV dramas The Shield and The Wire – with the same hardened sensibilities, only this time with a Canadian twist…

Interestingly, 19-2 – as seen on this DVD – is not the original version of the show. This particular iteration of the cop drama is actually an Englich-language remake of the series, which was originally set in Montreal and filmed entirely in French.

The Listener: Canadian TV Show Gets Season Two, Will Us Viewers See It?
After the show's unsuccessful summer on NBC, fans of The Listener have been hoping that the drama would still return for a second season. Well, the show has been renewed but viewers here in the states may not be seeing the episodes.

The Listener follows a young paramedic named Toby Logan (Craig Olejnik) who has the mysterious ability to hear people's thoughts. The series also features the talents of Lisa Marcos, Ennis Esmer, Mylene Robic, Arnold Pinnock, Anthony Lemke, Lara Jean Chorostecki, John Fleming, and Colm Feore.

The series is produced by Canada's Shaftesbury Films, in conjunction with CTV, Space, and Fox Intl. Channels. In February 2008, during the 2007-08 writers strike, NBC decided to license the first season of 13 episodes.

The show began its run in the Us some 16 month later, in early June 2009, but they were...

The Listener: NBC Pulls Craig Olejnik Series from Schedule
After low ratings, the peacock network has pulled the plug on the series about a telepathic paramedic.

The Listener debuted on June 4th on NBC. Initially produced for Canadian networks, the drama revolves around a young paramedic (Craig Olejnik) who has the ability to hear other people's thoughts. Through his job and abilities, he seeks to help those in need in any way he can.

Others in the cast include Lisa Marcos, Ennis Esmer, Mylene Robic, Arnold Pinnock, Anthony Lemke, Lara Jean Chorostecki, John Fleming, and Colm Feore.

On NBC, the show got off to a rocky start in the ratings. The two-hour premiere brought in 5.32 million viewers and just a 1.4/4 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Summer viewing expectations aren't very high but it didn't bode well that the program landed in third place in total viewers and the demo.

Things didn't get any better for the later episodes.

TV Review: Audiences Unlikely to Hear NBC’s ‘The Listener’
Chicago – Toby Logan (Craig Olejnik) is a 25-year-old paramedic who can hear other people’s thoughts. The telepath is the lead character on NBC’s frustrating new “The Listener,” a show that the network is clearly burning off this summer and that I don’t need psychic powers to predict won’t be on the schedule for too long.

Television Rating: 2.0/5.0 This CTV-developed show has a decent premise and talented supporting cast, but it’s such two-dimensional, generic material that it ends up feeling more like a syndicated action series that you would see on a Saturday afternoon. There’s nothing horrendously wrong with “The Listener” but it pales in comparison to recent dramatic occupants of the same night and network - “ER” and “Southland”.

NBC Summer Sci-Fi
NBC just announced their Summer lineup of shows. One Sci-Fi that was picked up seems interesting. A show about a telepathic paramedic. “The Listener” centers on Toby Logan (Craig Olejnik, “The Timekeeper”), a 25-year-old paramedic who has a big secret — he’s a telepath. Until now, Toby kept his ability hidden, exploring its possibilities only with his long time mentor and confidant, Dr. Ray Mercer (Colm Feore, “24: Redemption”). As he makes the rounds with his energetic paramedic partner — “Oz” Bey (Ennis Esmer, “Young People F*#king”), “The Listener” follows Toby as he tries to help people in crisis, and in the process, unravel the truth about his past. While his professional life is in check, Toby’s personal life could use its own rescue. And with the help of Detective Charlie Marks (Lisa Marcos, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”) and his E.R. doctor/ex-girlfriend Olivia Fawcett (Mylène Dinh-Robic,...
