‘Guns & Moses’ Review: Rabbi Meets Revolver in an Offbeat and Occasionally Awkward Thriller
Image
The pistol-packin’ padre is not an unknown figure in Westerns — particularly 1960s European “spaghetti” Westerns — but you’d be hard-pressed to name movies which cast their rabbinical brethren in a similar action-figure mode. “Guns & Moses” exploits just that novelty as its primary hook, complete with an advertising image of the bearded, fedora-topped hero brandishing firepower over the slogan “May God and Your Glock Protect You.”

Punning title aside, Salvador Litvak’s film promises a serious look at antisemitic violence, inspired by the 2019 shooting (which killed one person and injured three more) at Chabad of Poway Synagogue in San Diego County. Alas, the convoluted screenplay written by the director and spouse Nina Litvak bears little resemblance to that real-world incident, locates the criminal motivation well outside the realm of antisemitism, and somewhat awkwardly attempts to balance straight suspense with a persistent comedic streak.

The enterprising indie production entertains even as...

Neal McDonough Candidly Calls 'Guns & Moses' a "Story That Need To Be Told" [Exclusive]
Image
Neal McDonough is known for playing tough guys and straight shooters, from Yellowstone and Suits to Justified and Tulsa King. But in Guns & Moses, the upcoming neo-Western thriller hitting theaters July 18, McDonough plays a very different kind of character — and he’s got a lot to say about the film’s message.

Set in a dusty desert town rocked by a shocking act of violence, Guns & Moses follows Rabbi Mo Zaltzman (played by Royal Pains’ Mark Feuerstein) as he tries to unravel the truth behind a deadly shooting at a gala.

The film also features a stacked cast including Dermot Mulroney as the targeted solar entrepreneur Alan Rosner, Mercedes Mason as his mysterious wife, and Christopher Lloyd, in a yet-to-be-undisclosed role. Paulo Costanzo, Michael B. Silver, Alona Tal, Jake Busey, and Gabrielle Ruiz round out the ensemble.

The initial trailer teased a tense, twisting mystery: a suspected hate crime,...

'Tulsa King' Star, 59, Is Knocking on Heaven's Door in New 'Guns & Moses' Trailer
Image
Mark Feuerstein is a rabbi who's coming after anti-Semitism with guns blazing in the new trailer for Guns & Moses. Neal McDonough, Christopher Lloyd, and Dermot Mulroney also star in this neo-Western thriller. The film will be released exclusively in theaters on July 18.

As the trailer opens, Mo Zaltzman is the rabbi of a synagogue in a remote desert community that's about to be revitalized by a new solar power project spearheaded by businessman Alan Rosner with the full support of Mayor Donovan Kirk. However, the town's happiness is shattered by a violent attack on the temple, which is seemingly perpetrated by a local neo-Nazi, Clay Gibbons. Gibbons and his father Owen, maintain Clay's innocence, while, with the encouragement of his wife, Mo starts carrying a gun. But all is not as it seems, and as Rabbi Zaltzman starts digging into the case, it seems that there's much more at play than a lone racist.

A Badass Rabbi Has an Appetite for Destruction in New Trailer for the Neo-Western Thriller 'Guns & Moses' [Exclusive]
Image
Mark Feuerstein is a rabbi hunting down a killer in the new Collider-exclusive trailer for Guns & Moses. The neo-Western thriller also stars Neal McDonough, Dermot Mulroney, and Christopher Lloyd. It will be released in theaters on July 18, 2025, by Pictures From The Fringe and Concourse Media. In the trailer for the film, Feuerstein is Mo Zaltzman, a rabbi in a small desert town that's rocked by a shocking act of violence: a shooting at a gala honoring solar entrepreneur Alan Rosner (Mulroney), seemingly motivated by anti-Semitism.

A local skinhead is picked up for the crime, but Mo becomes increasingly convinced that he's innocent. He begins looking into suspects, including the mayor (McDonough), Rosner's mysterious wife (Mercedes Mason) and troubled brother (Michael B. Silver), a scientist whose career Rosner destroyed (Paulo Costanzo), and even Rosner himself. Meanwhile, Mo takes firearms training himself for self-defense...and just in time, too, as the...

The Best Action TV Shows Ever, Ranked
Image
Action shows have been one of the most popular sources of entertainment for decades. Action TV series have been produced on a regular basis — some focusing on long-term, serialized stories of heroes while others have taken a shorter approach more suitable for a binging session. All things considered, however, the genre is almost as popular on TV as it is in the movies.

The action genre has produced incredibly memorable shows that can hold their own with blockbuster counterparts like Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible franchise. The genre has also proven to be incredibly versatile and has experimented with a range of formats, including real-time seasons, anthologies, and merging with other genres. All of these have combined to create brilliant shows that have thriving fandoms years if not decades later.

Updated on January 18, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: The oldest action TV shows were largely Westerns and police procedurals, but the recent...

Cross’ Star Samantha Walkes Says Filming the Finale Was a ‘Beautiful’ Collaboration Between Cast and Crew
Image
“Cross” star Samantha Walkes says filming the Season 1 finale of the hit Prime Video series was a “beautiful” collaborative experience between the cast and crew.

“We all sit at that table in the cabin [where] me and the kids [were],” Walkes, who plays Elle Monteiro, began, saying it was the episode’s director Carl Seaton who wanted to bring everyone together for the creative brainstorm. “We sat there for like an hour discussing what we think needs to happen how this needs to play out, what this should look like, what should it sound like, what are the things that thrill us, that are hiccups that we don’t understand? Are there holes in the script?”

“It has to do with [director] Carl Seaton and the way that he directs. He loves discussion,” Walkes continued. “We would just swap off, and it was a very collaborative experience. It was beautiful.”

Aldis Hodge Loved James Patterson's Response to Whitewashing 'Cross'
Image
It's always nice to hear a story where someone tells Hollywood to go f*ck itself. Which is, quite literally, what James Patterson did when executives asked him to re-write his iconic Alex Cross character as a white man. And now Cross television star Aldis Hodge — who plays the titular character — is speaking out about what it means to have kept Alex Cross a Black man.

Speaking with BuzzFeed, Hodge explained that he was "shocked, impressed, and proud" when he heard the author of the wildly successful Alex Cross novels was asked by some Hollywood executives to sign a seven-figure deal — but only if he changed the character's race to white.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, Patterson explained the story as such:

"Here's an interesting thing about the Hollywood 'Cross' stuff. When I wrote the first Alex Cross book, I didn't have a lot of money and Hollywood came calling — knock,...

Prime Video's Cross Is the Third-Biggest Season Premiere for the Streamer This Year
Image
Prime Video’s newest hit series, Cross, has now become the third-biggest season premiere of 2024 for Amazon’s streaming service. Variety reports that the series, starring Aldis Hodge as the titular Detective Alex Cross, amassed 40 million viewers in the first 20 days it streamed on Prime Video.

Amazon states that the 40 million number ranks Cross No. 3 for this year as far as season premieres go on Prime Video behind Season 1 of Fallout and Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The Walton Goggins-led Fallout had 65 million viewers in 16 days and The Rings of Power had 40 million in 11 days. Cross debuted on Nov. 14.

The streamer also said Cross is the third-biggest launch for a Prime Video series and the sixth-biggest season launch of all time for the platform when 20 days of viewership are counted. Of the viewers, 55% were from countries other than the United States, with Germany,...

‘Cross’ Pulls in Big Worldwide Audience, Amazon Says
Image
Prime Video’s Cross has pulled in a big worldwide audience in the three weeks since its premiere, the streamer says.

The crime drama, starring Aldis Hodge and based on James Patterson’s best-selling novels, has drawn 40 million viewers globally over its first 20 days, according to internal figures from Prime Video. All eight episodes of the show’s first season (it’s already been renewed for a second installment) premiered Nov. 14.

The 40 million worldwide viewers makes Cross the No. 3 premiere for a Prime Video series this year over a 20-day span. It trails only Fallout — which, according to the Amazon-owned streamer, had 65 million viewers in 16 days — and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, whose second season (three episodes of it, anyway) racked up 40 million viewers in its first 11 days.

Amazon also says the launch of Cross puts it in the top six of all Prime Video series over its first 20 days.

‘Cross’ Hits 40 Million Viewers in 20 Days, Amazon Says
Image
“Cross,” the Aldis Hodge-led series based on James Patterson’s “Alex Cross” novels, hit 40 million viewers in its first 20 days of streaming, according to Amazon.

The streamer says that this total makes “Cross” its third-biggest season premiere of 2024, following only “Fallout” Season 1 and “The Rings of Power” Season 2. Though 20-day totals for those series have not been made available, Amazon previously reported that “Fallout” crossed 65 million viewers in 16 days and that “The Rings of Power’s” second outing crossed 40 million viewers in 11 days (which increased to 55 million after one month).

Additionally, Amazon says that “Cross” is Prime Video’s third-biggest series launch and sixth-biggest season launch of all time, accounting for 20 days of viewership for all titles. 55% of its audience comes from outside of the United States, with Germany, the U.K., Brazil, Canada and Spain in particular seeing “outsized performance.”

‘Cross’ Strikes Gold At Prime Video With 40M Viewers In First 20 Days
Image
Cross seems to have uncovered quite an impressive audience at Prime Video.

The series, based on James Patterson’s bestselling novels, has amassed 40M viewers globally in its first 20 days on the streamer, according to Amazon. It’s the third most-watched premiere of the year, behind just Fallout and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 through the first 20 days.

For reference, Fallout commanded more than 65M viewers within 16 days of viewing, while Rings of Power Season 2 hit the 40M mark in 11 days.

It’s unclear exactly how Prime Video is quantifying “viewers,” since there is no way for the streamers to determine exactly how many people are watching via a single stream, or if anyone is watching at all. It’s possible that the company is using active sub households to arrive at this number, like Paramount Global does, but Amazon declined to provide guidance when asked.

Cross Ending, Explained: The Finale Sets Up a Wild Season 2

Quick Links This Season on Cross... Cross Catches the Killer But It Doesn't End There Cross' Season 1 Ending Sets Up Season 2

Making its Prime Video debut on November 14, 2024, Cross is a popular crime series that has remained atop the platform's most-watched shows. Based on the fictional Washington, D.C. detective featured in 30 Alex Cross novels by James Patterson, the eight-part series has drawn plaudits for its towering performance by Aldis Hodge as the title character. The show's critical success and wide viewership led Amazon to renew the series for Season 2.

Of course, discussing Cross Season 2 without clarifying what transpires at the end of Season 1 is impossible. Core to Cross' investigative focus is identifying who murdered his wife, Maria. Meanwhile, the mysterious murder of a political activist occupies Cross' work duties, with the shocking confluence of events in the Season 1 finale setting up Season 2's storyline. Beyond naming Maria's murderer, here's...

'There Is a Partnership': Cross Stars Praise Amazon Show's Female Characters
Image
Prime Video's original series Cross is remarkable not only for its mystery, but for how it treats its female characters. The women in Alex Cross's world are all fully developed characters who can stand on their own, separate from their connection to Cross or the serial killer case he's trying to solve. The two most prominent female characters are Cross's love interest Elle Monteiro, and his old friend Kayla Craig.

With Cross Season 1 now streaming, Cbr spoke to actors Samantha Walkes (who plays Elle) and Alona Tal (who portrays Kayla) about the show's writing for its female characters. They discussed how the women in Cross are different from those in other procedurals, and one other incredible aspect of the writing that viewers may have missed. Plus, Tal reflected on reuniting with showrunner Ben Watkins, with whom she previously collaborated with on Hand of God and Burn Notice.

'Cross' Star on Whether Kayla Craig Becomes a Villain in Season 2
Image
Prime Videos new detective series, Cross, has gotten a lot of buzz, enough that it already had a Season 2 guaranteed long before it premiered. Fans of the James Patterson books that Alex Cross originates from may already have some clues about what to expect in the future season, especially about a major antagonist. The character of sharp FBI agent Kayla Craig is awfully similar to the name Kyle Craig in Pattersons books. The latter, once a friend of Cross, eventually becomes a major villain to defeat. Do we see the writing on the creative wall here?

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Alona Tal, who plays Craig in the series, was quick to note: This is the fun part. Since this is a new world, any resemblance [of the two characters] is just fuel for the speculation, and that keeps you at the edge of your seat. In every good character, there has to...

Isaiah Mustafa Shares How 'Cross' Tackles Cops & Black Communities

Isaiah Mustafa isnt shy when it comes to hyping the masterful storytelling of Prime Video's gripping new detective thriller, Cross. The Shadow Hunters and It Chapter Two star joins headliner Aldis Hodge in the new crime drama based on James Pattersons bestsellers about FBI agent Alex Cross hunting down a serial killer. He is quick to note how well the Washington D.C.-set series handles the always relevant relationship between the Black community and law enforcement. In a recent round table interview, Mustafa told MovieWeb:

I think that this series navigates that complicated relationship between the police and the community by addressing it and hitting it head on. We put it on display. We put it at the forefront of a lot of our story. We don't shy away from anything because we want to give people a true sense of what these two detectives have to go through on a daily basis.

Will there be a Cross season 2?
Image
If there’s one thing we needed, it was a convincing Alex Cross. Well, we got him in the form of Aldis Hodge in Cross, the Prime Video series.

The eight episode first season is now available to stream on Prime Video in full. Yes, this is a binge-watch, and you want to watch it without any spoilers.

There is a lot that remains faithful to the books, including the inclusion of Alex’s best friend, John Sampson. This character was missing from the movies, and showrunner Ben Watkins made it clear it was important to include him. After all, there are layers that come with this character.

Many will question Alona Tal’s Kayla Craig, whose name is similar to Kyle Craig. Is this just a gender swap of this character, or is it someone else entirely? That’s something we definitely need a second season to find out.

All eight episodes of the first season are now available. I had high hopes once I saw Amazon renew the series way ahead of its premiere. It meant that the hype was good and the execs were impressed with the series. It gave me feelings that I had with the likes of Jack Ryan and Reacher.

Amazon hasn’t disappointed. The show is powerful, and it takes us on plenty of twists and turns. Even knowing who Alex and the cops are after for the main case...

Cross TV Review: Aldis Hodge leads a solid adaptation of James Patterson’s bestselling novels
Image
Plot: A pulse-pounding crime thriller that follows the investigations of brilliant forensic psychologist and DC Metro Detective Alex Cross. Together with his best friend and partner Detective John Sampson, Cross delves into the psyches of insidious murderers while fighting to protect his family from the dangers of the criminal world.

Review: After thirty-two novels and three feature films, James Patterson’s beloved character, Alex Cross, is returning for a new adaptation. With Morgan Freeman leading two films, based on Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, and Tyler Perry portraying the detective in 2012’s Alex Cross, the character’s narrative exploits have been fairly well received on the big screen. For the new Prime Video series, Cross, the Patterson books serve as inspiration for the narrative rather than direct source material. Aldis Hodge leads the series as the brilliant detective who must hunt down a serial killer while maneuvering...

Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

James Patterson's most iconic detective is getting a new life with Ben Watkins at the helm in Prime Video's Cross. The Washington D.C.-based detective and forensic psychologist has been the lead of 32 novels by the bestselling author, and first made his way to the screen with 1997's Kiss the Girls, which starred Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, which he reprised with the 2001 sequel Along Came a Spider, which was actually the first book in the series. He would later be brought back with the 2012 franchise reboot Alex Cross, which starred Tyler Perry in the titular role.

Watkins first found success on screen with his work in the spy comedy series Burn Notice, having started as a staff writer on season 1 before going on to be a story editor in season 2, executive story editor in season 3 and a writer and...

‘Cross’ Team Talks Making Villain a ‘Full Character’ & Behind-the-Scenes Moments (Video)
Image
The character of Alex Cross from James Patterson’s novels has been explored on the screen before—in films with Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry—but the Prime Video adaptation starring Aldis Hodge is a TV series (and already renewed for Season 2!), offering more real estate with which to explore not only the titular character but those around him as well. Cross stars—Hodge (Alex Cross and also an executive producer), Isaiah Mustafa (John Sampson), Alona Tal (Kayla Craig), Samantha Walkes (Elle Monteiro), and Ryan Eggold (Ed Ramsey)—and showrunner and executive producer Ben Watkins stopped by TV Insider’s video suite at New York Comic Con to discuss their show and talked about just that. With that real estate, “we can explore the full breadth of the world of Alex Cross,” Hodge noted, pointing to his family, friends, and “the depths of what makes these people tick. And something...

Cross' Aldis Hodge & Isaiah Mustafa On James Patterson Detective's Investigation Style & No-Nonsense Partner
Image
Aldis Hodge is bringing another iconic character to life and has Isaiah Mustafa along for the ride in Cross. Though having worked since he was a kid, Hodge found his first breakout hit with a key role in TNT's Leverage, which he would reprise in a recurring fashion for its sequel show Redemption, and finding increasing success with everything from Straight Outta Compton to The Invisible Man and One Night in Miami.... Hodge has also been steadily building his filmography behind the camera, serving as a producer on Cross as well as co-writing and producing the sci-fi thriller Parallel with his brother, Edwin Hodge.

Mustafa, on the other hand, has taken an interesting route in his career, beginning as a wide receiver in the NFL before turning his attention to acting in the late '00s. He most notably became a household name thanks to being the main star...
