Maa isn’t just another horror flick on the list. It’s a film that creeps under your skin and lingers like a question you can’t quite shake off. With Kajol at the forefront in a genre that doesn’t often spotlight female leads, Maa boldly intertwines maternal instincts with the supernatural, creating an experience that’s both personal and unsettling. Yet, despite its unique approach and heartfelt performances, the film’s journey at the box office has been anything but smooth.
In its opening week, Maa pulled in a respectable Rs 26 crore net—pretty good considering its genre and tone. But the real challenge came in the second weekend. Up against heavyweights like Jurassic World: Rebirth, Metro…In Dino, and the powerhouse that is F1, Maa faced a bit of a dip on its second Friday, raking in just Rs 1 crore. However, what happened next was quite unexpected.

Maa Box Office Day 1 Early Estimates! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
After much anticipation, Kajol finally made her horror debut. Maa was released in theatres today, i.e., June 27, 2025. Produced by Ajay Devgn, the mythological horror film made a decent opening at the Indian box office. Scroll below for day 1 early trends!
Maa Box Office Day 1 Early Trends
As per early trends, Maa earned 4-5 crores on day 1. Kajol’s film opened to stiff competition from Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 and Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par. Thankfully, Nikita Roy postponed at the last minute, or the ticket windows would have gotten more congested.
Maa has scored better opening that Superboys Of Malegaon, Crazxy, The Bhootnii and Ground Zero, among others. However, it failed to enter the top 10 opening days of 2025 in Bollywood. It needed a minimum of 7.84 crores to beat Kesari Chapter 2 at the 10th spot, but that was out of reach.

Kajol, regarded as one of the best actresses of the post-Azmi generation, delivers a borderline anti-empathetic performance in a horror film that should have never been made. It just doesn’t justify its presence in any way.
It is a mother-daughter empathetic story, but the actress seems to be disconnected from her screen daughter. I remember Manisha Koirala telling me that she didn’t know the name of the boy who was her immediate co-star, even after shooting the entire film.
Did Kajol even know the name of the young girl (Kherin Sharma) playing her daughter? Does this mother really care what happens to her daughter? When the architects of this poorly constructed mother-daughter mound of hysteria don’t care, why should anyone else?
Maa, directed by Vishal Furian (his Chhichore wasn’t exactly The Exorcist) is so not worthy of Kajol that you wonder why she agreed to...

Maa Movie Review: Kajol Unleashes Divine Rage in a Fierce and Folklore-Fuelled Supernatural Thriller
In a world where horror often relies on predictable jump scares or excessive gore, “Maa” stands out as a breath of fresh air. Drawing from Indian folklore and infused with a powerful maternal essence, Vishal Furia’s latest supernatural thriller shines with emotional depth, cultural richness, and Kajol’s captivating performance. While it might hit a few bumps in pacing, “Maa” offers a gripping, immersive experience that honors the unwavering strength of motherhood—both human and divine.
Set in the fictional village of Chandarpur, which is haunted by a centuries-old curse, the story reveals how girls from a specific bloodline are sacrificed to a demon linked to the legend of Maa Kali. Furia skillfully intertwines the myth of Daitya—a demonic entity residing in a cursed tree—with the harsh realities of patriarchal superstition that disguises cruelty as tradition. Ambika, portrayed by Kajol in what could be her most grounded...

Sharmila Tagore and memories go back a long way. In Satyajit Ray’s Nayak, she shared Uttam Kumar’s reminiscences of an unforgettable journey. Fifty-nine years later, the incandescent Ms Tagore is back in a film about fade-proof memories and snapshots of a well-lived life.
There is an unintended referential, reverential moment of nostalgia in writer-director Suman Ghosh’s Puratawn(The Ancient), where Indraneil Sengupta, playing Sharmila Tagore’s son-in-law, urges her, “Gao na.”
He unknowingly echoes Rajesh Khanna’s two famous words in Shakti Samanta’s Amar Prem when Sharmila Tagore stops singing.
I am not sure whether Sharmila actually sings for her daughter and son-in-law in Paratawn: the end credits start rolling, and we just hear a voice singing about long-forgotten dreams and aches.
The line between the present and the past is effectually ebbed in Ghosh’s fragile, gentle take on memory, its loss, and tentative retrieval.

Aarya is a crime-thriller drama based on the Dutch drama series ‘Penoza‘. Sushmita Sen plays Aarya Sareen, an independent woman who seeks to protect her family and becomes a mafia gang to take revenge for her husband’s murder. Earlier, the show has been nominated for International Emmy Awards for best Drama series.
Having said so, the first thing that comes to my mind is about the producers / platform’s release strategy. They seem to be caught between being periodic or one-timer. I mean, most of the (Indian) web series that we see are released in one go (called a season). Fair enough, for, if the audience likes the content, they binge watch and feel satisfied. On the other hand there are these TV shows that release episodes on a daily/weekly basis. Similarly, we have seen quite a few international web series content release their episodes on a weekly basis.

After 2011’s “Nobel Thief,” 2012’s “Uncle Shyamal Turns off the Lights,” 2015’s “Peace Haven,” 2016’s “Mi Amor” and 2019’s “Aadhaar,” Indian filmmaker Suman Ghosh returns again to the Busan International Film Festival.
“The Scavenger of Dreams” has its world premiere in the ‘A Window On Asian Cinema’ strand. A treatise on social inequality, the film follows Birju and Shona, trash collectors who live in a Kolkata slum with their young daughter. They scour the city’s affluent areas by day for garbage and their experiences become the grist of stories for their daughter by night.
Like “Aadhaar,” “The Scavenger of Dreams,” then called “The Waste Collector,” was also at Busan’s Asian Project Market, where it gained significant exposure. The germ of the film was from a New York Times article about waste collectors that Ghosh read years ago that stayed with him.

Ians Rating: ****
Most of the gangster dramas are loaded with guns, violence, foul language, loud characters and weak screenplay, but this one is smart, sleek, dark and gritty, which sort of give the film an edge over every other crime drama.
A power shift is never easy, whether its in the corporate or any other field. When the young replace the old, there is always friction as it threatens positions of privilege and livelihoods. The old grappling with the idea of power and the young using the same power with brutality has been the norm of society for the longest time
.
An old and ailing mafia don, Nawab Khan (Raza Murad), is bed-ridden, and will eventually die. His son, Kadar Pathan (Abhimanyu Singh), is the rightful heir of the crime syndicate, but with old boss dying, everyone is conspiring and eyeing the ultimate chair.

Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is an action thriller movie directed by Ajay Singh, starring Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal.
A simple thriller that from the first bars does not deceive: it goes absolutely nowhere and does not have the slightest intention of showing us anything new, neither about the human condition nor about cinema.
Entertaining? Well, just about, although if we have to give it the benefit of the doubt from some angle or other, we can do so for the plot twists, which, without being novel, do give it the (almost) necessary zest.
El Vuelo de los Ladrones Movie Review
A story that starts out simple, showing a classic Bollywood, and that, little by little, twists towards a less simple thriller, one that is less about “good guys” and “bad guys”, and it does so in an interesting and even entertaining set of character transitions.

South Asian streaming service ZEE5 Global is adapting BBC drama Press as local series The Broken News, as part of a wider deal with BBC Studios.
ZEE5 and BBC Studios will work on a slate of slate of Hindi-language ZEE5 originals, beginning with a remake of Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett’s 2018 BBC drama.
Unlike the British original, the plot will switch from print news rooms to broadcast news companies. It will follow two rival news channels — the independent, ethical news channel Awaaz Bharati and Josh 24/7 News, which offers sensationalist and invasive journalism, and what transpires between the main characters in their quest for news.
The Broken News will also mark actor Sonali Bendre’s first streaming role, with director Vinay Waikul attached alongside the likes of Jaideep Ahlawat, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Indraneil Sengupta.
The original series came from BBC Studios and its subsidiary Lookout Point along with Deep Indigo...

Mithya(Zee5, 8 Episodes)
Starring Huma S Qureshi, Avantika Dassani, Parambrata Chatterjee
Directed by Rohan Sippy
Mithya is the kind of ballsy breakneck thriller that doesn’t shy away from addressing illicit sleazy relationships, even if it brings the protagonists’ heroism down by many pegs , and I do mean pegs, as the characters drink themselves silly and get their innerwear into a budge time after time.
Every main character in Mithya is flawed and to watch one of them turn around and act holier-than-thou after another makes a cardinal error, is ironical, to say the least.
Set in an idyllic tranquil hill station, just as the Sippys’ earlier web(of deceit) series Aranya, this one is about a Hindi teacher Juhi Adhikari (Huma S Qureshi) who doesn’t look she could teach Hindi, but seems happily married to Neil(Parambrata Chatterjee) until we see her making out in the school toilet...

NetflixDirected by Vinay Waikul, ‘Aranyak’ stars Raveena Tandon as the police station head of a small town whose seeming idyllic and slow pace of life is disrupted by a horrific crime.Saraswati DatarFirst things first – Ott shows or any form of content that can be accessed on personal devices should come with trigger warnings. Including scenes of a young adult attempting suicide without any loud and clear trigger warnings is extremely irresponsible. Aranyak and the other release this weekend, Aarya Season 2, have graphic scenes of an attempted suicide with no trigger warnings. Please ditch the fear of spoilers at a time when the collective mental health of the nation/globe has hit rock bottom. We owe this to the viewers. Missing trigger warning apart, Aranyak, written by Charudutt Acharya and directed by Vinay Waikul, is an entertaining watch. Rohan Sippy serves as executive producer on this series co-created by Ramesh Sippy and Siddharth Roy Kapur.
