Brian Helgeland
A Knight’s Tale musical is coming to the UK
Brian Helgeland
Brian Helgeland’s medieval sports movie is heading to the Manchester Opera House next year. With songs, obviously. More on the A Knight’s Tale musical below.

If there’s one image from A Knight’s Tale that endures more than probably any other, it’s the sight of a hundred medieval peasants stamping their feet to We Will Rock You.

Combined with re-imagining Geoffrey Chaucer as a wrestling announcer and more pop culture references than you can shake a lance at, the 2001 film always had a cheerfully anarchic relationship with reality. A perfect choice, then, for a stage musical.

Irish comedy writer and actor Brona C Titley has penned a new adaptation, which is having its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House in a strictly limited season from 11th April to 10th May 2025. Award-winning Rachel Kavanaugh is set to direct, with Olivier Award-winning Matt Cole handling choreography.

Heath Ledger Movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’ Gets Musical Theater Adaptation, Sets U.K. Debut
Image
“A Knight’s Tale” is set to be turned into a musical, with the theatrical show set to debut in Manchester, U.K. next year.

The 2001 movie, which starred Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell, continues to endure. It stars Ledger as a peasant who passes himself off as a nobleman and takes the world of jousting by storm. But Count Adhemar (Sewell), the bad boy of jousting, isn’t ready to hand over his crown, leading to a fierce rivalry.

It was written and directed by Brian Helgeland and produced by Columbia Pictures.

Helgeland recently revealed he had attempted to make a sequel to the film following the teenage daughter of Ledger’s character, with Sony and Netflix potentially interested before ultimately turning it down.

The film has now been adapted for the stage by Runaway Entertainment (“101 Dalmatians the Musical”) and will open on April 11, 2025 for a limited run.

Image
The creators of TV global hit The Great British Bake Off will be hoping their magic touch transfers to a live audience when ‘Bake Off: The Musical’ makes its theatrical debut next week in Cheltenham, south-west England.

The all-friendly but intensely competitive baking competition has been one of the great success stories of British TV in the last decade. Since making its debut on BBC Two in 2010, it has been sold around around the world, spawning versions in 35 countries and multiple spin-offs. Its creators Love Productions sold the show to Channel 4 in 2016, pocketing £25million and bringing the broadcaster a huge audience.
