Exactly 20 years ago, YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim uploaded the platform’s first ever video. Called Me at the zoo, it’s just 19 seconds long, but it marked the birth of the internet’s largest video site, a meeting place for creators and viewers all around the world to talk about any and every topic.
We here at Tubefilter are kicking off our own celebration of YouTube’s 20th anniversary: Over the next few months, we’ll tell the stories of 20 iconic videos that made YouTube what it is today–and, of course, we’re starting with Me at the zoo.
But for now, YouTube itself is doing the celebrating. It’s introducing some nostalgic easter eggs on the site and sharing some statistics to show just how many people (and how much content) pass through its digital gates each day, plus giving users a glimpse of what to expect in the coming months.

As Mariah Carey is fond of declaring, “It’s time!”
Almost.
Thanks to the song that has become the biggest hit of her career, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the pop diva has been inching her way back up through the record books. As of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated Dec. 21, the song has spent two weeks at No. 1 for the year, which brings it overall total to a whopping 16 weeks. It looks like she’s going to reclaim her title for the longest-running chart-topping single of all time. But she’ll have to wait another year or two to get there.
Carey previously owned the record for longest-running No. 1 hit with the release of “One Sweet Day,” her collab with Boyz II Men, on Nov. 14, 1995. During that era both artists were accustomed to racking up long runs at No. 1. Carey had topped the chart for eight...

Lil Nas X congratulated Kendrick Lamar and Shaboozey after “Not Like Us” and “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” finally broke two chart records that Nas’ breakthrough behemoth, “Old Town Road,” had held since 2019.
Last week, “Not Like Us” surpassed “Old Town Road” to set a new record for the most weeks at Number One on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. “Old Town Road” held the previous record with 20 weeks atop that chart, while “Not Like Us” — Lamar’s scathing Drake diss — has now officially notched 22 weeks at Number One on Hot Rap Songs.

Álvaro Díaz’s creative vision has felt almost prophetic the last couple of years. In 2021, he released Felicilandia, an album that twisted reggaeton into all kinds of left-leaning directions, playing with pop-punk energy, Eighties synths, and rock guitars. Then, this April, he dropped Sayonara, a continuation of Felicilandia that pushed even deeper into off-kilter, futuristic beats and styles. All along, he’s been able to find sounds that have propelled the genre forward and introduced listeners to a new alternative lane in reggaeton.
Díaz got his start as a rapper in Puerto Rico’s underground.

A music genre born in the barrios of Puerto Rico permeated into the mainstream and up the charts. Its story is told through Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World, a new docuseries from Peacock. Executive producer and director Omar Acosta teamed up with Daddy Yankee to spotlight the cultural touchstones, evolution, and impact of Reggaeton. Daddy Yankee’s song Gasolina became a global phenomenon 20 years ago, solidifying him as the “King of Reggaeton.” Others who helped put the Latin, hip-hop, and Caribbean-infused sound on the map are also interviewed for the docuseries. Names like Bad Bunny, Feid, Ivy Queen, J. Balvin, Karol G, Myke Towers, Nicky Jam, Rauw Alejandro, Shaggy, Vico C. and more. Here Acosta provides insight on the making of the project and why it hits close to home. Bad Bunny performs onstage during the 2023 Grammy Awards (Kevin Winter/Staff) Reggaeton is often lumped together with other genres of music.

Given that Donald Trump has been in politics for more than eight years, his rallies are pretty recognizable to most Americans — but the one in Johnstown, Pennsylvania last week was different. Trump wasn’t introducing a sheriff or a Maga mayor. Fear not, song parody fans — ”Weird Al” has a solution. Rather than a new collection of goofs, the polka parodist is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of his #1 album Mandatory Fun with a single song that combines takeoffs on a dozen hits from the past decade.

The lawsuit that could significantly impact the past and future of reggaeton music will proceed to trial as a judge denied the majority of motions to dismiss the legal action involving the oft-sampled 1989 track “Fish Market.”

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s hit “Despacito” was without a doubt the biggest song of the year in 2017, and it only got bigger when Justin Bieber hopped on a remix.

Jamie Yao was created as a replacement to the negatively stereotype "Chin-Kee" character from the graphic novel American Born Chinese. Ke Huy Quan's role as Jamie reflects his own career trajectory after early success in movies like Indiana Jones and The Goonies. The character of Jamie serves as a more nuanced and approachable example of the harmful stereotypes depicted in the original graphic novel.
Ke Huy Quan's character, Jamie Yao/Freddy Wong, is a replacement for "Chin-Kee" in American Born Chinese, and it's understandable why the creators would have wanted to make that particular switch. Disney+'s American Born Chinese is based on the 2006 graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The coming-of-age fantasy action comedy follows tenth-grader Jin Wang (Ben Wang), the son of Chinese immigrants, who is roped into a battle between ancient Chinese gods by a new exchange student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu). When I first learned that Bad Bunny's sold-out Most Wanted Tour included three back-to-back shows at the Barclays Center in NYC and one that landed on my birthday, April 11, it all seemed meant to be. The concert would occur three days after a highly anticipated solar eclipse, a new moon, and all during a Mercury retrograde. It would also happen during Aries season - the beginning of the astrological year and a time for new beginnings. While I had high expectations for Benito's performance and his first NYC show from the tour, one thing that stood out most is how the Puerto Rican artist continues to appreciate and celebrate his loyal Latine fans.
Bad Bunny is the most-streamed artist on the planet. This fun fact never loses its significance for loyal Latine fans who have witnessed the struggle for Latin music to get the respect and support it deserves here in the States.
