In September 2023, months into both the actors’ and writers’ strikes, something of a “happening” took shape at Venice Beach’s Electric Lodge, a multidisciplinary arts and community center that hosts everything from taekwondo classes to live performances. For a few weeks, the venue also played home to something increasingly rare: a new play from David Mamet.
Over the years, the controversial Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright has drawn ire for both his political leanings and the content of his work, both on stage and screen. The play, titled “Henry Johnson,” was viewed by some as a reaction to those reactions, by others as a timeless parable. Set across four scenes, the film (and play) follows Jonigkeit’s Henry, whose life is upended after he participates in a heinous crime, is sent to jail for his misdeeds, and struggles to find meaning in all of it.

Pulitzer Prize-winning filmmaker David Mamet comes out of a 10-year hibernation today with a trailer for his upcoming thriller Henry Johnson. The prison drama finds Shia Labeouf and Evan Jonigkeit turning up the heat inside a hostage situation.
Here’s the official synopsis for Henry Johnson courtesy of the project’s production company 1993:
Written and Directed by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet, Henry Johnson follows the title character (Jonigkeit) as he navigates his search for a moral center, after an act of compassion upends his life. Looking to authority figures he encounters along the way — including his eventual cellmate, Gene (Labeouf) — Henry’s journey leads him down a road of manipulation and ethical uncertainty. The film is an exploration of power, justice and the consequences of letting others choose your path for you.

When you hear that Oscar winners Nicolas Cage and J.K. Simmons are teaming up with popular actors Giancarlo Esposito, Andy Garcia, and Scott Haze for a movie, it sounds more than promising. When you also know that it is going to be an addiction flick that explores the good and the bad sides of this issue, it becomes even more promising. To that, you can also add the fact that the movie will be partially inspired by the real-life story of the recently convicted Hunter Biden, son of current US President Joe Biden, and you have – The Prince!
The Prince has officially entered pre-production, as the premise and confirmed cast members imply that we’re in for a very interesting movie. Exclusive: Director Cameron Van Hoy has entered production on The Prince, a new feature drama penned by Pulitzer Prize winner and Oscar nominee David Mamet. Scott Haze (Old Henry) leads a starry ensemble that also includes Nicolas Cage (Pig), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Giancarlo Esposito (Parish) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven).
The Prince chronicles an addict’s tumultuous odyssey through the high-stakes world of power, pleasure, and pain on a transformative journey toward recovery.
While unconfirmed, we’re told by multiple sources close to the project that the lead character Parker, played by Haze, is inspired at least in part by Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, whose abuse of drugs and alcohol is well documented — including in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things — and who was found guilty Tuesday in Delaware of three felony counts related to the purchase of a gun in 2018.

Johnny Knoxville takes on a role that comes with just as much drama as it does comedy with the new film Sweet Dreams. It's a film that the Jackass star compares to the classic sports comedy Bad News Bears, but with adults.
Sweet Dreams was directed by Lije Sarki, who joined Knoxville to speak about the movie with Cbr's Kevin Polowy following its digital release on April 16. In the film, Knoxville plays a recovering alcoholic who forms a baseball team with a group of misfits to save their rehab facility from getting auctioned. Sarki mentioned how the film was inspired in part by his real life, as he's struggled with addiction in the past. Though this is serious subject matter, the goal was to make light of it in an entertaining way with Sweet Dreams.

The potential for Jackass 5 is uncertain as Johnny Knoxville is not currently feeling the urge to film another sequel. Despite not having the Jackass "feeling," Knoxville continues to write stunt ideas for a possible future project. Concerns about the physical toll on Johnny Knoxville from previous stunts may impact the likelihood of a Jackass 5.
Johnny Knoxville recently hinted at the potential for Jackass 5. He has been a key figure in the Jackass series, known for his fearless antics. Jackass Forever, the latest in the series, saw considerable success, which naturally led to questions about another sequel.

Most people love an uplifting sports movie, but what if the story were to focus on more than just a bunch of guys trying to win some sort of championship? Paramount's new film Sweet Dreams gets its title from the name of a rehab facility that houses men on the path of sobriety, men who ultimately try to keep their lights on by competing in a softball league with a cash prize.
From writer-director Lije Sarki (producer on The Peanut Butter Falcon) and starring Jackass icon Johnny Knoxville as a recovering boozer who checks into "Sweet Dreams," the hard-hitting new dramedy also features some familiar faces like Bobby Lee (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle) and GaTa (Anyone But You). We recently caught up with the two gents in a paired interview to learn more about how their real-life experiences tied to addiction helped fuel their standout performances.

Actor Johnny Knoxville and director Lije Sarki reflected on the meaning of their new movie, Sweet Dreams, in their new uInterview.
Sweet Dreams follows a father (Knoxville) forced into rehab as he coaches a softball team of unconventional men in recovery.
When asked what drew him to the role, Knoxville told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “My dad was an alcoholic, a lot of my friends are in recovery. There’s been many times in my life where I distracted with this or that, so there was a lot of time of preparation for this role.”
Sarki, who wrote the movie inspired by his own experience with alcoholism, remembered one of his favorite scenes.
“Where they’re in the circle upstairs in the attic of the house, he talks about the Frag meeting, you know, Fear, Resentment, Acceptance, Gratitude – that was really really powerful,” he recalled. “Both that scene and the...

Paramount Pictures hosted a ‘Friends & Family’ screening for its new Johnny Knoxville-starrer Sweet Dreams at L.A.’s Laemmle Royal on April 1. Even with a handful of comedians in the building and a date that coincided with April Fool’s Day, the world premiere of filmmaker Lije Sarki’s recovery-centered softball dramedy was no joke.
The scene mirrored much larger Hollywood premieres as members of the starry cast and their friends (Anderson .Paak, Bobby Lee, Lil Dicky) mingled with movie stars (Josh Brolin, Shia Labeouf). Guests took advantage of a red carpet complete with a veteran Tinseltown photographer (Todd Williamson) while others waited in long lines simply to get into the Laemmle (an overflow theater was added to accommodate the number of RSVPs).

Johnny Knoxville always seems to display an aching vulnerability, and it’s not just because he’s voluntarily endured years of intense bodily suffering as a result of his Jackass movies. So he seems the perfect choice to play the central character in Lije Sarki’s raucous black comedy that plays like a Bad News Bears featuring recovering addicts rather than precocious children.
Knoxville plays Morris, whose sad state of affairs is made immediately apparent in the opening scene: He’s shown waking up nearly naked and bloody on a park bench, having clearly been on one hell of a bender the night before. Even worse, he had apparently left his eight-year-old daughter home alone, making him realize he’s a danger to others as well as himself.

There have been plenty of movies detailing life in a fraternity — Animal House being the crown jewel of all, no matter how outrageously funny. The newest entry in the genre, The Line, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival this weekend, is not trying to amuse on any level; a deadly serious take on college frat houses, it looks like it was ripped straight from the many headlines about hazing deaths and horrific goings-on at these places.
However, for at least its first half to first two thirds, this feature film debut for director Ethan Berger (who also co-wrote the script with Alex Russek) is aiming to entertain with a look at the fictional southern Kappa Nu Alpha fraternity in all its vile, sick, crass ugliness. If the goal was to make us hate these guys, the filmmakers succeed admirably. By the end I wanted see every last one of them...

Writer/directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz are among the nominees for the DGA’s Outstanding First-Time Feature Film Director for 2019. The honor came after an unbelievable year for the partners, as they not only delivered their little movie that could, “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” which scored raves and the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW, but landed a distribution deal with Roadside Attractions, which took them to over $20 million at the domestic box office. That doesn’t happen much anymore.
How did Nilson and Schwartz pull off this rare feat? Like many breakouts, the short filmmakers listened to their own intuition, crafted a unique story that touched them, and found gifted producers to back them.
Eight years ago in 2011, they met a young actor with Down syndrome, Zack Gottsagen, at a Venice camp for actors with disabilities. “We were enamored by him as a human being,” said Nilson in a telephone interview.

When Zack Gottsagen, a young man with acting dreams who also happens to have Down syndrome, asked creative duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz to write and direct a film for him, they responded with pure determination to make it happen. “Honestly, I thought, ‘That’s a great idea,’” Schwartz says. “He’s the best actor we know.” Impressed with Gottsagen’s work in the Peanut Butter Falcon’s ‘proof of concept’ reel, Shia Laboeuf and Dakota Johnson jumped aboard the Mark Twain-esque tale of Zak (Gottsagan), a man on the run from a care home in pursuit of his wrestling dreams, aided by outlaw Tyler (Laboeuf) and disillusioned care worker Eleanor (Johnson). A heartwarming story for the ages, touching on the power of dreams, familial friendships and love, it’s proven a launchpad for the directors who received a DGA nomination in the First-Time Feature category, and are about...
