‘The Friendship Game’ Review
Image
Stars: Peyton List, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Brendan Meyer, Kelcey Mawema, Dylan Schombing, Miriam Smith, Jennifer Copping | Written by Damien Ober | Directed by Scooter Corkle

Two girls, Cotton (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) and Zooza (Peyton List), are trawling a garage sale when an old woman approaches them to tell them about the strange object on the table – it’s a “friendship game”, one that will tell you who your real friends are. So, of course, they buy the freakish object and get their friends Courtney (Kelcey Mawema) and Rob (Brendan Meyer) to play along. The object of the game? To place your finger on the object and reveal your deepest desires to the object and the group…

Which would, in the hands of some directors, lead to some fantastical supernatural action as our protagonists’ desires come back to bite them in the arse. In fact, if I’m honest, I was expecting...

The Friendship Game (2022) – Horror Movie – Review: What a Pity
The Friendship Game is a Canadian horror movie directed by Scooter Corkle, starring Peyton List, Brendan Meyer and Jennifer Copping.

A teen and YA horror flick that could have been better. A promising premise, a disappointing production.

Premise

A group of friends come across a strange artifact that will put their friendship at risk. All the while, a hacker watches them with her spyware.

Movie Review

Do you know when a movie is not particularly well elaborated and the story is a bit disappointing? ‘The Friendship Game’ is one such example. Following a rather flat start, and despite it, you think to yourself, “oh, I will give it a chance.” Because the premise seems promising, and we expect it to tell us a story with multiple narratives, and think, “it might actually be worth the while.”

Unfortunately, that is not the case, but, hey, we did give it a chance.

The Friendship Game Review: Frustrating Horror Mystery Feels Like a Messy Rough Draft
Image
The idea of “friends forever” is a nice sentiment that many people think about throughout high school. For some, it’s hard to imagine growing apart from one’s best friends even at the face of dramatic changes like relocation, college aspirations, and personal growth. These are concepts screenwriter Damien Ober plays around with in a horror mystery/thriller that aims to test loyalty among a group of high school friends as they transition to new chapters in their lives. Directed by Scooter Corkle, The Friendship Game had all the elements it needed to succeed in this genre. However, the film tends to bite off more than it can chew, and the end result is a colossal disappointment.

Cotton (Kaitlyn Santa Juana), Zooza (Peyton List), Courtney (Kelcey Mawema), and Robbie (Brendan Meyer) will be friends to the end — at least, that’s what they think before a mysterious object puts...

Will These Friendships Survive in Horror 'The Friendship Game' Trailer
Image
"If your friendships don't survive the game, neither do you." Rlje Films has revealed an official trailer for The Friendship Game, a horror thriller from Canadian filmmaker Scooter Corkle. A group of teenagers in a small town discover a strange metal object that tests the resilience of their friendship. When one of the best friends goes missing after playing the game, our characters are forced to look inward, mostly through the eyes of our lead character Zooza as she wrestles with her fear of abandonment and resentment of her absent father. She must confront the monster within or no one will survive the game. Sounds freaky! This stars Peyton List, Brendan Meyer, Kelcey Mawema, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, and Dylan Schombing. I dig the cool Hellraiser-esque game object in this, but the rest of it looks like a super obvious and campy story about growing up and friends and trauma. Can't...

Shawn Ashmore and Dianna Agron in Hollow in the Land (2017)
Dianna Agron Is Dark and Gritty Like You've Never Seen Her Before in 'Hollow in the Land' Clip (Exclusive)
Shawn Ashmore and Dianna Agron in Hollow in the Land (2017)
Dianna Agron has come a long way since her days playing a rebellious, acapella-singing cheerleader on Glee. This year alone, she's portrayed a slick hacker in a dystopian not-so-distant future (The Crash), a conflicted nun, Sister Mary Grace (Novitiate), and her role in the upcoming crime thriller, Hollow in the Land, may be her darkest and grittiest yet.

In this exclusive clip, Agron's Alison sets out to uncover the truth when her brother is involved in a brutal murder, but is warned by The Twilight Saga's Rachelle Lefevre not to play amateur detective: "I don't want to see you get into something you can't back away from."

Vertical Entertainment

Hollow in the Land marks the feature directorial debut of Scooter Corkle (who, fun fact, was a grip on Air Buddies -- talk about versatility!), who says of casting Agron, "Dianna has this natural ability to just pop into character. She's got this bubbly, excitable energy always...

'Hollow in the Land': Film Review
Scooter Corkle
Never mind the inner cities. The backwoods of Canada are far more dangerous and violence-strewn, if Scooter Corkle's debut feature is to be believed. Starring Dianna Agron as a young woman desperately searching for her missing younger brother accused of murder, Hollow in the Land traffics in familiar rural thriller territory, but it features an excellent performance from its lead actress and a strong atmosphere of moody tension courtesy of its writer/director.

Agron plays Alison, who makes a hardscrabble living working at a pulp mill, the town's main industry. She's raising her trouble-prone teenage brother Braydon (Jared Abrahamson) herself, since...

Family Ties Tested in Thriller Hollow In The Land [Trailer]
I missed a great number of movies at this year's Vancouver International Film Festival but perhaps the one I'm most bummed about is Hollow in the Land.

Written and directed by Scooter Corkle who is making his feature film debut after two excellent shorts, Chloe and Attie and Pour Retourner, Hollow in the Land stars Dianna Agron and Jared Abrahamson as Alison and Braydon respectively, siblings eking out a rather miserable looking existence.

Braydon has had his share of run-ins with the law and when a friend of the pair turns up dead, Braydon is the main suspect. Now missing, it's up to Alison to find her brother and clear his name before the police pin him with the death.

In addition to Agron and Abrahamson, Hollow in the Land also stars Sh [Continued ...]...

Dianna Agron in First Trailer for Mystery Thriller 'Hollow in the Land'
"Do you think he could've done it?" Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie mystery thriller titled Hollow in the Land, the feature directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Scooter Corkle. Hollow in the Land is a small-town murder mystery thriller starring Dianna Agron as a woman who decides track down her brother to clear his name after being blamed for a crime he didn't commit. There seems to be a few other twists and turns, as expect, in this film described as "Winter's Bone-meets-'Making a Murderer'". The full cast includes Jared Abrahamson, Shawn Ashmore, Rachelle Lefevre, Sarah Dugdale, Jessica McLeod and Michael Rogers. This looks quite solid, perhaps a strong debut for Corkle. It also seems like another chance for Agron to show how talented she is, leading the entire film. Here's the first official trailer for Scooter Corkle's Hollow in the Land,...

In the shorts categories, the Golden Tines are Daniel Klein and Mirra Fine of Cook It Raw Charleston (documentary), and Scooter Corkle’s Pour Retourner (drama).

“This year we had an exceptionally robust program with films from around the world,” said Michael Howell, executive director of Devour!.

“We are delighted we were able to attract such a high calibre of culinary films. Each of the award winners should be very proud of their achievements.”

Bunker Blueprint: In a Pa Wasteland, The Horizon Project Will Help Rebuild Humanity
I first saw director Scott Belyea's work last year when the director and his team presented one of the best shorts I saw in 2011 and the entire thing was shot, edited and post produced in 48hrs. Get ready because Belyea is at it again and this time, he and his team, which includes director of photography Scooter Corkle (you may remember him from the excellent Chloe and Attie (full short)) had more than two days to get their new project together. [Continued ...]...

Creepy sisters Chloe And Attie returning to big screen in new feature film
Earlier this year I was really pleased for the opportunity to share Scooter Corkle's short film Chloe and Attie which had been kicking around the festival circuit and generating buzz for what seemed like years. I was even more pleased at the reaction from those that saw the short and didn't know what to make of it. Worry not confused masses, things are about to get a little clearer; or so I hope.

Watch Scooter Corkle's Unsettling Chloe And Attie Now
Originally created as part of a 48 hour film challenge, Scooter Corkle's Chloe And Attie is one of those troubling little films that burrows under your skin and settles in for a good long stay. I was part of the festival run for this one, bringing it to Toronto where Corkle presented it in person along with his stars - real life identical twins - and I've been waiting for the chance to share it on a larger scale. That time is now with the complete film freshly released online.Chloe and Attie is a tale about a woman who cares for her infirmed friend, ensuring her injections come at just the right time, setting herself aside for the sake of caring for another person....

Acclaimed short Chloe And Attie now online. See it here!
It seems that I've been hearing about Scooter Corkle's Chloe and Attie for years. And that's probably not far from the truth considering the short was completed in 2009 and played numerous festivals through the 2010 season. I missed it at Viff last year but it was one that a few folks mentioned as a must see and lookie here. now I, and the rest of the world for that matter, can see the short film that had everyone talking.

Starring Jacqueline Robbins and Joyce Robbins as the titular Chloe and Attie, it's the story of a woman looking after her friend. But it's a short film, running just over 8 minutes, and there really isn't a whole lot to this story or many twists so you.re better off just seeing it for yourself and you can do so below.

Short film after the break.

Worldwide Short Film Fest Reviews Part II
Identical twins have always played a large part in film fantasies both titillating and frightening. It’s no surprise that this genetic and reproductive anomaly is fascinating, and Scooter Corkle takes advantage of this fascination in his film Chloe and Attie. Identical twin sisters Jacqueline and Joyce Robbins play the title characters. Chloe looks after her sister Attie; Attie appears to be in a strange wakeful yet vegetative state, not able to walk or move without Chloe’s assistance. Chloe spends most of her time drinking by her sister’s bedside. One day, Attie sends her sister a signal. And then the horror begins. Attie has a secret and deadly power; Chloe is her enabler. Would it be different if they weren’t twins? Does the loyalty to family matter over everything else? Or does Chloe get her own perverse pleasure from Attie’s destruction? The washed-out photography adds to...

Don't Hold The Quote From Uwe Against Him. Scooter Corkle's Chloe And Attie Looks Like Truly Unsettling Stuff ...
Though it's well nigh impossible to really judge a film from a teaser we clearly need to give credit to director Scooter Corkle on three fronts for his short film Chloe and Attie.

One: The guy knows how to cut an effective trailer. This thing is textbook.

Two: He's either one wickedly talented Dp himself or smart enough to hire one.

Three: This is a man who clearly understands that fear is all about mood and tone, that what you don't show - and how you don't show it - is often the most effective element in building tension and unsettling your audience.

As a trailer, this is killer stuff and I'm very intrigued to see the short. So just don't go holding the Uwe Boll quote against the guy, okay?...
