To celebrate the release of The Resident on Disney+’s new platform Star, we sat down with the star of the drama to find out about the new series and how the pandemic has changed everything.

The Resident is a powerful new medical show focusing on a young doctor’s final years of training that rips back the curtain to reveal the truth of what really happens, both good and bad, in hospitals across the country. Dayal plays Dr. Devon Pravesh and tells us about why he wanted to play the character initially, the challenges of television and playing a character for some many years, the huge fanbase and how the series is reflecting Covid-19.

With the advent of streaming, European television has successfully solidified its place in Hollywood, conquering international audiences with shows such as “Gomorrah,” “Medici” and “Suburra: Blood on Rome,” all Italian dramas available on Netflix, in addition to HBO’s “My Brilliant Friend” and the Italian-French-Spanish thriller “The Young Pope.”

Adaptations of such international shows as “BeTipul” and “Prisoners of War” introduced American audiences to Israeli formats. Now a batch of popular Israeli series are thrusting up-and-coming actors into the spotlight, poised to take Hollywood by storm.

Tomer Capon, who was cast by Natalie Portman in her directorial debut, “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” and has starred in two hit series overseas, “Fauda” and “When Heroes Fly,” is one such actor making headway in the States.

“Everything happened really fast for me,” Capon says. “When I got the call that Natalie [Portman] wanted to meet with me, I thought it was a joke. I was so naive and green, I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t know anything.”

NBC has evicted one of its newest drama series. The network has cancelled The Village TV show so there won't be a second season.

It's a sad day to be a moderately rated NBC freshman series. 

The Peacock network has officially canceled The Village, The Enemy Within and Abby's. 

When The Village was announced to be picked up to series at the network a year ago, it was touted as the next This Is Us. 

However, the series failed to catch on in the ratings and was moved to the 8/7c slot for its final episodes following weak ratings.

The Village Season 1 averaged 4.1 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating on Tuesdays, meaning that a renewal was unlikely. 

Still, the show boasted a robust cast that included the likes of Moran Atias, Lorraine Toussaint, and Michaela McManus. 

The Enemy Within was another midseason entry that failed to catch on. It stepped into the Mondays at 10/9c slot when Manifest Season 1 concluded.

NBC has cut a trio of freshman series.

“Abby’s,” “The Enemy Within” and “The Village” have all been canceled after only a single season on the network.

The former is multicamera comedy which starred Natalie Morales in the title role, as a woman who ran a bar in her backyard. The series, which has only aired seven episodes to date, actually utilized the gimmick of being shot outdoors instead of on a soundstage, the first to do so. Morales was the first-ever female Cuban lead in the format.

The regulars at Abby’s bar, and therefore on the show, included Neil Flynn, Jessica Chaffin, Kimia Behpoornia and Leonard Ouzts. The show came from Josh Malmuth, who was showrunner, and executive producers Michael Schur and David Miner. “Abby’s” was produced by Universal Television, Fremulon, Waila Inc. and 3 Arts Entertainment.

NBC has canceled freshman series “Abby’s,” “The Village,” and “The Enemy Within,” TheWrap has learned.

The trio of shows (two dramas and a comedy) all debuted at midseason and had been the only programs still sitting in limbo at the network, which made most renewal and cancellation decisions ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers earlier this month — and canceled “A.P. Bio” last week.

Executive produced by Josh Malmuth and Mike Schur, the sitcom “Abby’s” centers on the titular unlicensed bar that Abby (Natalie Morales) runs in her backyard, which “is the perfect gathering place for locals to find camaraderie and sanctuary.”

“Abby’s” is averaging a 0.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 2.4 million total viewers, according to the “most current” data from Nielsen, which includes a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available.

NBC has made a decision on its new midseason series, comedy Abby’s and dramas The Village and The Enemy Within. All three have been canceled, joining sophomore midseason comedy, A.P. Bio, which was axed last Friday.

NBC left the future of Abby’s, A.P. Bio, The Enemy Within and The Village undecided heading into its upfront presentation earlier this month.

“The next season’s schedule is fluid, we want to give those shows a chance to fulfill their run and we’ll take another look at them then,” NBC Co-Chairmen George Cheeks said on NBC’s May 12 upfronts call. “Remember we program 52 weeks a year so there are a lot of slots.”

The decision is not surprising as neither series has been a critical or commercial breakout. All are from Universal TV; The Village and The Enemy Within just wrapped their runs; Abby’s has a couple of more episodes.

“Has [insert name of broadcast TV show currently in limbo here] been canceled or renewed?” That’s the question on many viewers’ minds now that upfronts season is over.

While Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW have all announced their 2019-20 programming schedules, some of those slates don’t reveal everything, meaning the statuses of just under half a dozen broadcast TV shows are still up in the air.

And look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” famously was last season — and not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC, Fox and The CW, who have already axed or renewed everything on their lists — viewers need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.

The future of NBC’s Abby’s, A.P. Bio, The Enemy Within and The Village is “still under discussion” but Co-Chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy refused to hand out formal cancellations to the shows after they did not make NBC’s 2019/2020 schedule.

Speaking on NBC’s press Upfronts call, the pair said that no decision had been made on the shows, although sources suggest that it is unlikely that they will return to the network.

Telegdy said, “Anything that’s still on air is still under discussion, so no cancellations.”

Cheeks added, “The next season’s schedule is fluid, we want to give those shows a chance to fulfill their run and we’ll take another look at them then. Remember we program 52 weeks a year so there are a lot of slots.”
