Film and TV Production In L.A. Was Already Plummeting. Wildfires May Hasten the Exodus
Image
Surfacing from the ashes of Los Angeles’ raging wildfires is a plea from local entertainment industry folk gutted by the blazes: Bring production back to the region.

“One of the biggest things you can do to help our city is to shoot here,” wrote prominent cinematographer and director Rachel Morrison (The Morning Show, The Mandalorian) in an Instagram post making the rounds among behind-the-scenes film and TV workers. “We have some of the best crews in the world who need work now more than ever.”

Morrison’s message speaks to an unprecedented slump in local production. The pandemic came first. Then the strikes. And when it appeared as if filming in Los Angeles had bottomed out and would soon be on the upswing amid an escalating tit-for-tat battle among filming hotspots vying for Hollywood dollars, wildfires fueled by hurricane-force winds battered L.A. The city has seen its share of devastation in earthquakes,...

The Best Music Videos of 2020
Image
Narrowing down any kind of list of music videos usually means separating the meaningful expressions of musical ideas from the flashy gimmicks. The best ones that you’ll see below manage to work in tandem with the songs, each elevating the other. Sometimes, this might mean that a great song has a leg up — it’s hard not to be wowed by something paired with a song that means a lot to you or has been stuck in your head for months.

But it works the other way, too. It’s easily as possible for a track that may not have clicked the first few listens to suddenly come alive with the right visual pairing.

Some of these will be easier to match to this calendar year than others, but each of them take a distinct stylistic approach to the songs they complement. Whether simple, elaborate, or in that area in between,...

Lauv Reflects on Social Media Use in ‘Modern Loneliness’ Video
Lauv jumps through all his social media apps in the video for his power ballad “Modern Loneliness,” a commentary on technology dependence.

Lauv filmed the video for “Modern Loneliness” while in quarantine, with director Jason Lester capturing footage of Lauv remotely. The video features an iPhone screen that jumps between reflecting Lauv as he stares at it all day and what he’s actually doing on his device: checking Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and his text messages. The video ends with him FaceTiming his mom as he sings “Modern loneliness/We...

See Jesse McCartney as Hard-Drinking Woman in New Video for ‘Wasted’
Jesse McCartney
Pop star and actor Jesse McCartney performs as four different characters – a stylish playboy, a tough-guy biker, a distinguished butler and a boozing older woman – in his soap opera parody video for “Wasted.”

Director Jason Lester clip models the clip after vintage daytime serials, offering melodramatic close-ups, intentionally cheesy dialogue, campy bumper IDs and outlandish plot twists (including a love triangle and an “incurable disease”). The action takes place at a lavish mansion, where rivals Ricky Moonstruck and Brock Donahue fight over a romantic interest. The butler, Chamberlain, interrupts the action with a crossbow,...

5 Fun Facts from Director Mark Lester on Poseidon Rex
With the release of the next Godzilla blockbuster less than a month away, it’s time to start whetting our appetites for giant monster movies. Aside from our well-worn DVDs of Pacific Rim, what’s out there? We’re glad you asked. How about a swim with Poseidon Rex?

We sat down with veteran director Mark Lester – best known for his 80s action flicks – to find five fun reasons to check out P-Rex.

1. Criminals Are People Too

Although the character Brian Krause plays in Poseidon Rex is a smuggler and a thief, he’s got a softer side. “I hired Brian to act in the film, having known him from his work on ‘Charmed’,” said Lester. “I thought he was perfect for a criminal with a nice side so he could be the hero of the film also.”

2. Godzilla Hates Thugs

It’s fun watching giant dinos munch on puny drug lords.
