‘Maggie’ Canceled at Hulu After One Season (Exclusive)
Image
“Maggie” has been canceled after its first season at Hulu, Variety has learned exclusively.

The single-camera comedy was ordered to series at ABC in May 2021, though parent company Disney switched it from the broadcaster to a streaming home on Hulu in January 2022 ahead of its summer premiere.

The series was based on the 2019 short film of the same name by Tim Curcio. Rebecca Rittenhouse starred in the title role, a woman navigating the world of dating as a psychic. Maggie’s gift allows her to see into the future of her friends, parents, clients and random people on the street. But when she begins to see glimpses of her own destiny after meeting an unexpected stranger, her romantic life suddenly gets a lot more complicated as she attempts to let herself fall in love while thinking she knows how it will end.

Series regulars also included David Del Rio as Ben,...

Maggie Mull Signs Multi-Year Overall Deal at 20th Television
Image
Maggie Mull, co-creator of the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Maggie,” has signed a multi-year overall deal at 20th Television. At the studio, she will continue working on “Maggie” while also creating new series and supervising other live-action and animated comedies for all platforms.

“Maggie,” which Mull co-created with Justin Adler, was originally developed for ABC before moving to Hulu in January. The single-camera comedy is set to debut later this year and is based on Tim Curcio’s short film of the same name. Rebecca Rittenhouse stars as a young woman trying to cope with life while coming to terms with her abilities as a psychic. David Del Rio, Nichole Sakura, Angelique Cabral, Leonardo Nam, Ray Ford, Chloe Bridges, Kerri Kenney and Chris Elliott also star. Mull and Adler serve as executive producers alongside Evan Hayes and Jeff Morton.

Mull’s previous credits include writing and producing on “Family Guy...

Maggie: ABC Comedy Moves to Hulu
Rebecca Rittenhouse
Maggie will no longer be putting down roots on ABC.

The single-camera comedy will now stream exclusively on Hulu, Deadline reports.

News of the decision comes as a bit of a surprise, but fellow broadcast networks have been moving shows earmarked for the linear networks to streaming.

CBS, in particular, moved both Evil and Seal Team to Paramount+, but both series has previously spent at least a full season on the linear network.

Deadline notes that ABC's decision was brought on due to a lack of schedule space to slot the Rebecca Rittenhouse midseason comedy.

It was one of four ABC pilots to nab series orders on the network last season.

The Wonder Years launched in the fall and has been a decent ratings performer, but Queens has largely been a disappointment in the traditional ratings.

ABC's comedy roster also includes Home Economics, Abbott Elementary, The Conners, black-ish, and The Goldbergs.

ABC Comedy ‘Maggie’ Moves to Hulu Ahead of Series Premiere
Image
The upcoming ABC comedy series “Maggie” will now debut on Hulu rather than the broadcast network, Variety has confirmed.

The single-camera show was originally ordered to series at ABC in May 2021. A premiere date for the newly christened Hulu original will be announced at a later date.

This is the latest example of a show meant for broadcast to make the move to a streaming service owned by the broadcaster’s parent company. ViacomCBS recently moved the CBS dramas “Seal Team” and “Evil” to Paramount Plus after they had initially aired on broadcast. Meanwhile, Peacock has aired the comedy series “AP Bio” after it was canceled at NBC and debuted the drama “The Lost Symbol” after it was originally developed at NBC.

“Maggie” stars Rebecca Rittenhouse as a young woman trying to cope with life while coming to terms with her abilities as a psychic. It is based on the...

New ABC Comedy Series ‘Maggie’ Moving To Hulu
Image
Exclusive: Single-camera comedy series Maggie, originally picked up by ABC for the 2021-22 season, now will stream exclusively on sibling Hulu in the U.S. as a Hulu Original. The decision, underscoring the blurring of the lines between linear and streaming at the major media companies, was made in order to get Maggie in front of audiences instead of keeping it on the bench because of a lack of available slots on the network.

A premiere date will be announced later.

Maggie, starring Rebecca Rittenhouse as a young woman trying to cope with life while coming to terms with her abilities as a psychic, was one of four ABC pilots ordered to series last May along with comedies The Wonder Years and Abbott Elementary and drama Queens.

On the comedy side, The Wonder Years got off to a strong start in the fall and, along with sophomore Home Economics, received full-season pickups in October.

New Scripted Series For 2021-22 Broadcast Season: A Photo Gallery
Image
Updated with new photos: It was a long, pandemic-impacted broadcast development cycle, with some pilots taking a year to get produced, but the broadcast networks have made their picks for new scripted series to debut in fall 2021 as well as the bulk of their decisions for new midseason 2022 shows.

The pandemic forced broadcast executives to think outside the traditional broadcast pilot model and rely more heavily on straight-to-series orders, often based on additional scripts, sometimes delivered through the opening of a writers room.

Check out Deadline’s gallery of new 2021-22 shows. Those picked up straight-to-series that have not produced a pilot and have no episodic art available, are represented by their top talent on or behind the camera.

‘The Wonder Years’, ‘Queens’, ‘Maggie’ & ‘Abbott Elementary’ Picked Up To Series At ABC
Image
Four days before ABC’s upfront presentation, the network has made its first new scripted series pickups for the 2021-22 season, with nods to music-themed drama Queens and comedies The Wonder Years, Maggie and Abbott Elementary.

Queens, headlined by Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Pepi Sonuga, and the Wonder Years reboot, from Saladin Patterson, the original series’ Fred Savage and Lee Daniels, emerged as frontrunners at the script stage and remained strong during casting, production as well as screening and testing of the finished pilots.

Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary also was an early standout, while Maggie Mull and Justin Adler’s Maggie, headlined by Rebecca Rittenhouse, proved a textbook dark horse, staying largely under the radar until a very strong showing during screenings.

ABC has already passed on a number of pilots, including comedy Adopted, and expect more pilot passes this afternoon, while some pilots will remain in active consideration for midseason.

Along with Williams, the series also stars Dule Hill as Bill Williams, Saycon Sengbloh as Lillian Williams, Laura Kariuki as Kim Williams, Julian Lerner as Brad Hitman, Amari O’Neil as Cory Long and Milan Ray as Keisa Clemmons. Don Cheadle will narrate as the adult version of Dean.

[LateNightWithJimmyFallon.com] The Legend of Neil has been greenlit for a third season from Atom.com, according to tweets from creator Sandeep Parikh. Atom won’t officially confirm this, but we’re pretty sure this is a go. The Streamy-nominated series has been Atom’s most successful original web series for the past two years. ‘Old Friends’ Lands Exclusive Babelgum Deal, Preps Season 2
Babelgum announced today it has secured exclusive rights to distribute season 1 of Old Friends, which is now up in its entirety, and that production is wrapping up on season 2 which will be released on the site in January 11. We've been following the work of New York comedy standouts Nick Ross and Tim Curcio for a while now, even before their popular comedy series hit the web earlier this year. Ross had starred in 2008's Park Bench series, which stood out for its sharp witted simplicity—"two lusty yet oblivious dudes whiling away the summer on a Central Park bench," according to our reviewer. The 7-episode first season of Old Friends, tells the story of Tim and Nick, two 28 year-olds who are reunited after not seeing each other since high school. There's a classic comedic tension setup, with a little love tangle going on. Tim is now married to his high school sweetheart,...

‘Old Friends’ Might Be Our New Best Friends
Tim Curcio just ran into Nick Ross, whom he hasn’t seen since high school and would have preferred it stay that way. Because, though Tim married his high school sweetheart, Nick took her virginity. Now Nick wants like hell to be Tim’s best friend, while Tim would rather see Nick get hit by a truck. That’s Old Friends, though Tim would never describe them as such. Bottom line, this show is good. From top to bottom: premise, performances, and production all conspire to create one solid web-series with some serious legs. Tim and Nick both from NYC’s Upright Citizen Brigade not only play Tim and Nick, but created and write the show. Their last project, Park Bench, was a crowd favorite last summer. And Matt Cady as Dp and producer deserves serious props for its beautiful production value and crisp look. The three of them partners in their production company,...

‘Old Friends’ Make Fantastically Uncomfortable Comedy
A couple months ago, thanks to the power of Facebook and nostalgia, I met up with a few guys I grew up with but hadn’t seen in nearly ten years. Situations like those are always nerve-wracking because you never know what kind of people they may have become or what kind of baggage was picked up or dropped off along the way. Fortunately, well-adjusted heads and our shared escapes from the hometown provided common ground where, otherwise, there may have been little. But to say that some folks don’t age so gracefully would be an incredible understatement and I’m glad it was these two fellas I met up with instead of randomly running into some Wooderson-type from back in the day. The stop-and-chat with a long lost/forgotten friend is a fear laying dormant in far too many of us as we go about our daily business...
