Burnett, who also wrote the movie, commences production this week in Los Angeles. Pic follows a veteran Hollywood actor (Marc Maron) who, after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, becomes obsessed with securing a spot in the Academy Awards’ “In Memoriam” montage. This leads to a heartfelt exploration of ego, humility and legacy.

Greer will play Maron’s ex-wife. The 13 Going on 30 actress joins Talia Ryder in the feature. Invention Studios’ Nicholas Weinstock and Divya D’Souza are producing with Maron, as well as Burnett and David Martin from Avalon.

Exclusive: Judy Greer (White House Plumbers) is joining season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me, the sequel to the Apple series from Josh Singer, bestselling author Laura Dave, executive producers Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter, and star/EP Jennifer Garner.

Greer will recur in an undisclosed role alongside Garner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Angourie Rice and David Morse, who are set to reprise their roles for season two. The second season of the series will expand as Dave’s sequel to her bestselling novel “The Last Thing He Told Me” that’s set for publication in 2025, ahead of the premiere of season two.

The Last Thing He Told Me is a dramatic thriller that follows Hannah Hall (Garner), a woman who must forge a relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey (Rice) in order to find the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared. The complete first season of the 2023 series is now streaming on Apple.

Domingo has been enjoying a hell of a run over the last year.

Deadline reports that Judd Apatow has been tapped to direct Cola Wars for Sony, who shelled out $1 million in April for the pitch. The film is based on the true story of “Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola” in the mid-1980s. Steven Spielberg is also on board and will produce the project through his Amblin Entertainment production company.

The Cola Wars brought us many memorable events, including the disastrous launch of New Coke and the Pepsi commercial that left Michael Jackson with severe burns. The film is billed as “the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).” Jason Shuman (Acapulco) and Ben Queen (Cars 2) are penning the script for the project, and while it’s still in the early stages, it could be a fun flick.

However, Deadline has now revealed that Universal Pictures has reserved a release date for May 15, 2026, for what is being described as an “original event film” that has been created by and will be directed by Spielberg.

It is not revealed what the event film is. However, it was reported last month that Spielberg would reunite with frequent collaborator David Koepp for an original UFO movie that has been kept very secretive. The UFO movie is said to be based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that would be all the information given at this point.

Universal Pictures has dated an “untitled event film” directed by Steven Spielberg for a wide release on Friday, May 15, 2026. The story will be by Spielberg and the screenplay by his frequent collaborator David Koepp. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.

While no further details were shared at present, Variety reported last month that Spielberg’s next project will “likely” be “a UFO film based on his own original idea” and written by Koepp. The May 2026 release is Spielberg’s original idea as written by Koepp, and a Spielberg UFO film would surely be an event film.

When reached by IndieWire, a spokesperson for Universal Pictures declined comment on the UFO detail.

“Doctor Who” Debuts New Trailer

Allons-y, Whovians! As promised, Disney+ wrapped up last week with the first official trailer for the upcoming new season of “Doctor Who,” starring Ncuti Gatwa as the recently regenerated Fifteenth Doctor.

In wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey fashion, the long-running sci-fi series will start back at Series 1 for its new era, which will see the Fifteenth Doctor and companion Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson) travel across time and space, from Regency-era England to war-torn future worlds.

Sunday marked the 96th Academy Awards, hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel. 2023 saw box office hits Oppenheimer and Barbie dominating the summer to critical favorites Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon bringing outstanding roles for actresses Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone.

Oppenheimer swept most of the top honors, including Best Picture, while fan favorite Barbie took just a single award.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell set a new record as the youngest people to win two Oscars for their song “What Was I Made For?” for the Barbie soundtrack. The Best Actor/Actress categories featured previous Oscar winners such as Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser introducing the nominees with personal messages to each star.

Another Oscars season is over. The 96th Academy Awards have wrapped, and the full 2024 Oscars winners list has been revealed.

“Oppenheimer” had an air of inevitability about it unlike few Best Picture contenders in recent memory: IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted it would win seven Oscars tonight, including the top prize. And indeed it did, nabbing seven statuettes overall. But the triumphs for “Oppenheimer” at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards suggested it was the film to beat, by any standard.

“Oppenheimer” also received the most nominations overall, with 13. Its seven wins were for: Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture — the most of any film tonight. The next-most nominations was 11 for “Poor Things,” and then 10 for “Killers of the Flower Moon.

Oppenheimer was named best picture at the 2024 Oscars, which were were handed out Sunday.

The film took a total of seven awards during the night: Christopher Nolan won best director, Cillian Murphy won best actor and Robert Downey Jr. won best supporting actor. The film also won awards for best cinematography, best original score and best film editing.

In a surprise, Emma Stone won best actress for Poor Things, which also snapped up three crafts wins, for best costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling. She beat out perceived frontrunner Lily Gladstone, who has scooped up numerous awards for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won best supporting actress for The Holdovers.

Crank up that steel drum cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P”! “Anatomy of a Fall” has scored the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Director Justine Triet and her husband and co-writer Arthur Harari took the stage at the Dolby Theater on March 10 to accept the trophy.

In winning the award, Triet and Harari beat out several other Best Picture nominees to claim the top prize. Also nominated in the category were David Hemingson for “The Holdovers,” Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer for “Maestro,” and Celine Song for “Past Lives.” The sole non-Best Picture nominee recognized in the category was “May December,” which received its sole Oscar nomination for Samy Burch’s script.

The Original Screenplay Oscar is the latest award that Triet’s courtroom drama received during the past Awards season. Triet and Harari won in the same category at the British Academy Film Awards, the Golden Globes, and the French César Awards.

The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.

Another awards season comes to an end, as the 2024 Oscars named Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Best Picture, beating out contenders like Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Poor Things. Nolan also won for directing, while Cillian Murphy beat out The Holdovers‘s Paul Giamatti for Lead Actor and Robert Downey Jr. received the win for Supporting Actor.

But Poor Things didn’t fare too badly, taking home four awards including a surprise win for Emma Stone, who was widely considered the underdog given Lily Gladstone’s heavily favored performance in Flower Moon. American Fiction also took home a well-deserved adapted screenplay nomination, while Anatomy of a Fall won for original screenplay.

Barbie didn’t go completely win-less, as Billie Eilish and Finneas won their second Oscar for “What Was I Made For?” (just after a jaw-dropping rendition of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and a whole...

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).

Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). The Best Original Screenplay race weirdly goes all the way back to the Gotham Awards, which get plenty of credit as the ceremony that most often kicks off awards season, but is not the most accurate in predicting what players will be winning Academy Awards come Oscar night. But the reason to mention its 2023 iteration specifically is that it was the first place where “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Best Screenplay category, but “Past Lives” won Best Film.

Of the eight individual writers behind these five films, only Josh Singer (“Maestro”) has earned recognition in this category before. Indeed, he is looking to go two-for-two here after succeeding on his 2016 bid for “Spotlight,” which he co-wrote with its director, Tom McCarthy. This is the latest round in this year’s 35 boxes theory: the WGA nominations. This theory tracks a film’s support across the industry throughout awards season. The test is made up of 35 boxes, each one presenting a key nomination or win that a potential Best Picture champion typically needs to get in order to win the Oscars’ big prize. All of the big awards organizations are involved here, including the Golden Globes, the SAGs, DGAs, PGAs, the BAFTAs, the Critics Choice Awards, and more.

The idea is, the more boxes a film ticks off, the greater the movie’s support across the industry, the higher the chance that flick has of winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards. For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Oppenheimer went into the 2024 Ee BAFTA Film Awards with the most nominations with 13, and earned the most wins overall with seven. Christopher Nolan took home his first BAFTA Best Director win, and the film also earned Best Film, Leading Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr), Editing, Cinematography, and Original Score awards.

Poor Things followed with five wins in the Leading Actress (Emma Stone), Costume, Make Up & Hair, Production Design and Special Visual Effects categories. The Zone of Interest collected three wins: Outstanding British Film, Film Not in the English Language, and Sound. And The Holdovers was recognized with Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and Casting honors.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.

“Oppenheimer” swept the BAFTAs on Sunday night, winning awards for director Christopher Nolan and actor Cillian Murphy as well as taking home the prize for best film.

Overall, the movie took home seven golden BAFTA masks, with “Poor Things” coming in second place with five wins.

BAFTA chair Sarah Putt opened the ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night by welcoming the star-studded audience, which included Prince William, who arrived solo as his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, continues to recuperate at home following an operation. William, who is president of BAFTA, did not give a speech, no doubt in part because of renewed interest in his personal life following his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis last month.

In her speech, Putt said she was sending Catherine and the King “our very best wishes” before handing over to the night’s host, “Doctor Who” star David Tennant.
