Members of the stunt community have reacted to SAG-AFTRA’s move to create a task force to investigate racist practices that still exist within the stunt community.

The move comes after members of the stunt community issued a letter to SAG-AFTRA last month highlighting issues of racism, homophobia, xenophobia and misogyny.

Earlier this year, “Stargirl” actor Anjelika Washington had called out a blackface incident as late as 2017 on her Instagram page. “My 4th job as an actor, my first recurring guest star, and my first time having a stunt double — and they painted her black.”

Such posts propelled SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris to say, “We have heard the personal stories of paintdowns, wiggings, harassment and bias and we stand together to say ‘no more.’ This board recommitted itself to our mission of diversity, equity and inclusion for underrepresented stunt performers. Today, we are taking decisive action to address these systemic issues.

The SAG-AFTRA National Board is creating a task force to investigate allegations of racist practices in the stunt community.

SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris said, “We have heard the personal stories of paintdowns, wiggings, harassment and bias and we stand together to say ‘no more’. This board recommitted itself to our mission of diversity, equity and inclusion for underrepresented stunt performers. Today, we are taking decisive action to address these systemic issues.”

The board announced Friday night that the task force will investigate current practices and develop and recommend protocols to help ensure fair and equitable hiring practices within the stunt community.

SAG-AFTRA leaders are being pressed to respond to stunt performers allegations of racism, nepotism, intimidation and slander.

The issue arose due to an open letter sent Wednesday on behalf of stunt performers who are Bipoc, women, LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities. Signees asserted that their talents are overlooked, denied and discredited, professional opportunities foreclosed and careers foreshortened.

“We have watched from the outside as white stunt performers are painted down, suited/helmeted or men wigged in a grotesque simulation of those of us denied employment,” they said. “Modern-day blackface is Hollywood’s shameful secret. We’ve been taunted, ostracized, harassed and threatened simply for showing up or speaking up. We have been shut down, shut up and shut out for far too long.

Dozens of stunt performers have signed a letter sent today to the leadership of SAG-AFTRA calling for an end to “wigging” – the age-old practice of putting wigs and dresses on stuntmen so they can double for actresses – and “paint-downs,” in which dark make-up is applied to white stunt performers so that they can double for actors of color. “In the stunt industry, diversity and inclusion have long been overlooked and discouraged, and it’s long past time for these practices to end,” said stuntwoman Crystal Santos, who spearheaded the campaign.

In response to the letter, SAG-AFTRA said that it “stands in solidarity with performers whose opportunities to work in stunt roles have been denied or limited because of bias against women, minorities and performers with disabilities. Judao Cinema in Brazil managed to get a hold of a motion from Paramount Pictures for “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.”

In this spin-off film from the “Paranormal Activity” franchise, it follows Jesse, who was marked by mysterious magical forces as his families and friends try to save him.

This is Christopher Landon’s first “Paranormal Activity” movie that he is directing. He co-wrote the last three “Paranormal Activity” movies.

The movie stars Andrew Jacobs, Molly Ephraim, Richard Cabral and Crystal Santos.

“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” will be in theaters on January 3rd next year.
