A look back at 2008’s Mithun Chakraborty’s Don Muthu Swami
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at Mithun Chakraborty’s Don Muthu Swami, which hit the big screen in 2008.

After his sterling performance as an aging but fearless Bengali newspaper editor in Mani Ratnam’s Guru, Mithun Chakraborty played the role of an aging, naïve gangster in Ashim Samanta’s Don Muthu Swami which clocks 17 years. The role was inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s stint in John Landis’ 1991 comic-crime drama Oscar.

Mithun’s film was titled Don Muthu Swami. It was directed by Ashim, son of the late filmmaker Shakti Samanta. Shakti Samanta and Mithun teamed up in the past for a Hindi-Bengali film called Aar Paar and Khwab.

What makes this project interesting is the casting of TV star Rohit Roy as the gangster’s conniving accountant.

Said Rohit, “It was a comic role. And I was very excited about trying my hand at comedy for the first time. Also, because of the banner.

Best Of Malayalam Cinema 2024
Image
While the established stars like Nivin Pauly and Tovino Thomas hit roadblocks with their latest offerings Malayalee From India and Arm, respectively, Malayalam cinema was not short of quality work this year.

1. All We Imagine As Light: What can we say about a film that has broken the glass ceiling twice over, first by becoming the first Malayalam film to reach audiences across India, and then by becoming the first Indian films since Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali to have grabbed global attention so unconditionally. Sight & Sound has recently named Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light as the best film of 2024. And now the garnered Golden Globe nominations!!! Indeed Kapadia’s elegiac ode to Mumbai’s desolate migrants is a wondrous pilgrimage through the heart of solitude. Dreamy and lyrical, it creates a new language for cinema where the spoken word is rendered redundant. The actors don’t speak like actors.

‘Do Patti’ Review: Kajol and Kriti Sanon in a Hindi Netflix Thriller That’s More Confused Than Clever
Image
Do Patti (Two Cards) is a film with an identity crisis, in that neither director Shashanka Chaturvedi nor writer/co-producer Kanika Dhillon seem to be entirely sure of its primary instinct.

Is it a twisted tale of identical twins, one good and one bad? Or is it one more hill station mystery? (For some reason, streaming platforms seem enamored with these — think of Netflix’s Aranyak or Mrs. Serial Killer, Voot’s Candy or ZEE5’s Rautu Ka Raaz. Perhaps the hope is that the beauteous mountain views will distract from the bumpy storytelling.)

Is this an impassioned plea against domestic violence, or a courtroom drama in which it’s difficult to decide who played whom? Is it an exploration of the nature of justice, and of whether the letter of the law or the spirit of the law is more important?

Do Patti attempts to be all of these,...

Film Review: Undercurrent (2023) by Christo Tomy
Image
Patriarchy in Indian society is deeply rooted, with the consequences for women being evident throughout. At the same time, the issue has been the source of a number of movies, particularly during the latest years, with titles like “Biriyaani” being one of the first that comes to mind. Christo Tony also attempts his hand at the concept, through an approach, though, that brings two women in direct clash.

Undercurrent is screening at Indian Film Festival Los Angeles

Anju is a young woman who was forcibly made to give up on her relationship with the Hindu Rajeev, instead marrying Christian Thomaskutty, in a concept that has left her bitter but still devout to the ‘rules”. As such, she lives in her husband's house and has to follow the orders of her mother-in-law, Leelamma, and her husband. Unfortunately, quite soon after the wedding, Thomaskutty suffers from an ailment that leaves him essentially...

Yellow Bus Review: How Far Will You Go For Justice? [TIFF 2023]
Image
It's a sweltering day on the Arabian peninsula, but Ananda's (Tannishtha Chatterjee) family is happy. Ananda and her husband Gagan (Amit Sial) can barely keep their hands off each other, smiling at one another like newlyweds. Ananda lovingly and delicately prepares pomegranate for her two daughters' school lunches, six-year-old Anju (Kshethra Mithun) and older sister Ravina (Aarushi Laud). Ananda walks her kids to the bus, and waves excitedly as they drive away, the joy reciprocated in her daughter's faces.

But this gleeful day is about to come crashing down around them. Anju has fallen asleep on the school bus, and a series of small, unfortunate decisions compound, and Anju is left on the bus while the rest of the kids go to school. In the suffocating heat, Anju gets heat asphyxiation and dies. Ananda and Gagan are called into the school, believing their daughter has wet herself again. But...

Tannishtha Chatterjee
TIFF Review: Yellow Bus Follows a Mother’s Investigative Journey to Find the Truth After Tragedy
Tannishtha Chatterjee
Ananda (Tannishtha Chatterjee) says it all towards the end of Wendy Bednarz’s feature debut Yellow Bus: “There were so many chances to save her life.” That’s the message at the center of its tragedy. Not justice, but acknowledgement. Because while it’s easy to blame anyone whose presence touched a senseless and avoidable death, few (if any) are actual murderers. Grief has a tendency of blinding us from this fact, though. Even when the person we blame most is ourselves.

Ananda, conversely, wants justice. She saw the way the school bus door jammed after Ravina (Aarushi Laud) and Anju (Kshethra Mithun) boarded and how it didn’t when she’s supposedly shown the same bus again after the latter girl was left inside to die of hyperthermia. She sees the obvious guilt in the academy principal’s (Kinda Alloush’s Mira) eyes when attempting to give Ananda...

Why Testament of Love Is Legend of Zelda’s Greatest Quest
Image
Quests are an underrated part of the Legend of Zelda franchise. Granted, each Zelda game is basically one massive quest, but I’m talking about the series’ various side quests. They’re the adventures you find off the main story path. Some are so obscure that you can easily beat the rest of the game without ever realizing they exist.

The very best Legend of Zelda quests are often worth going out of your way for, though. They’re often daunting tasks that push fans to their limits while granting them painfully little knowledge of the road ahead or even what the reward for their considerable efforts will be. Often, the reward is an incredible new item or similar discovery that offers a practical gameplay benefit. Sometimes, though, the reward is the experience.

Yet, in the incredible history of Legend of Zelda quests, none quite compares to Majora’s Mask‘s Testament of Love.
