I’ll never forget the first time I watched Jurassic Park. While I didn’t have the privilege of attending its original theatrical run, I remember begging my mom to rent the movie on VHS and then watching it three times in a row in utter amazement. Naturally, I became obsessed with this blockbuster Michael Crichton adaptation and soon sought out the source material for more dinosaur-related thrills.
Like many other kids at the time, I was unprepared for the novel’s dark tone and copious amounts of gore (not to mention all of the hard sci-fi elements). However, I soon grew to appreciate how one of the biggest summer blockbusters of all time was actually based on a weird little horror book. And in honor of the latest entry in the Jurassic Park series promising to bring genetic terror back to the films after years of tamed velociraptors, we...

With the launch of Jurassic Park, and its numerous sequels, the 1990s was a great time to be alive for paleontology nerds. The Steven Spielberg franchise, based on the books of Michael Crichton, helped spark new interest in the discipline. Funny enough, the most clever references probably went over the average viewer's head in the 1997 sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Spielberg's in-joke satirizing the showdown between the two leading American paleontologists. If you thought the director didn't take science seriously just because this is a monster movie, think again.
When Spielberg made Jurassic Park movies, he pulled out all the stops, enlisting the best and most respected minds in the field to depict a credible recreation of the extinct beasts. One problem. Not even the leading figures could agree on what the star of the movie--the Tyrannosaurus Rex--should eat, how he should move, or his physiology. Hidden...

In the world of Jurassic Park, while life can indeed find a way, it's often the spectacles of death that stand out as some of the best parts of the franchise. Whether it's a tearful farewell or a classic case of karma coming full circle, the various ways in which characters meet their end across the original Jurassic Park trilogy showcase the series' exceptional acting and imaginative storytelling. Surprisingly, few realize how much of the Jurassic Park series’ most iconic moments emerged from the fatalities of its many characters.
Adapted from Michael Crichton's original novels, the original Jurassic Park trilogy pitted countless protagonists against cloned dinosaurs and the chaos they created. While occasionally straying from the source material, the films effectively translated the terror from the original novels into highly entertaining adventures. Succeeded by the Jurassic World sequels, the Jurassic Park series lives on as one of the most influential creations in modern mythology.

Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton’s novel, spawned five blockbuster sequels as well as a multitude of spin-off games, toys, novels, and multiple animated television shows. It features a theme park housing de-extincted dinosaurs that break out of their confines and cause havoc. Underpinning the plot is clever genetic engineering that has allowed the Park’s scientists to assume they could control all aspects of the dinosaurs’ development, including their sex, much to their later horror when it becomes apparent such control was never possible. The film franchise has taken an average of over $1 billion dollars at the box office,...
