Creative Arts Emmys, Night Two: Winners List
Image
The second night of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys has crowned its winners.

The annual two-day event, which takes place the weekend before the Primetime Emmys, saw 99 TV awards handed out to mostly below-the-line categories, as well as recognition for guest actor and actress roles. Awards announced on Sunday included honors for comedy, drama and limited series, after Saturday was largely devoted to variety, nonfiction and reality. Big winners on Saturday included Jim Henson Idea Man, Saturday Night Live, Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden, Welcome to Wrexham and The 96th Oscars.

Shogun was the far-and-away winner at Sunday’s ceremony, collecting 14 of the evening’s 49 awards, including guest actor in a drama for Nestor Carbonell. The Bear cleaned up in the comedy categories, landing seven honors, with two for guest actor and actress in a comedy for Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis; Michaela Coel rounded out...

Creative Arts Emmys: ‘The Last of Us’ Tops Night One Ceremony
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023)
HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us topped night one of the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys presentation with eight awards, in the categories for guest actor, which was presented to Nick Offerman for his role as Bill; guest actress, for Storm Reid, who played Riley; editing; main title design; prosthetic makeup; sound editing; mixing and VFX.

The Television Academy started to hand out its Creative Arts Emmy Awards Saturday, which will continue Sunday at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live, after being pushed from its September window due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Also during Saturday’s ceremony, HBO’s The White Lotus, FX’s The Bear and Netflix’s Wednesday collected four awards apiece. The White Lotus won Emmys for music supervision, casting, hairstyling and score. Wednesday collected trophies for costumes, makeup, main title music and production design. The Bear won awards for casting,...

2023 Emmys: A closer look at ‘Abbott Elementary’s’ 8 nominations for Season 2
Image
“Abbott Elementary” is back in the Emmy race again with its sophomore season after achieving multiple awards successes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In its first Emmy outing, the show was a threat to win Best Comedy Series, having picked up writing and casting awards, along with a Best Supporting Actress victory for Sheryl Lee Ralph. This year it added to its tally with an additional nomination, garnering eight against last year’s seven, and all notably for a full network season of 22 episodes. Read on for a closer look at “Abbott Elementary’s” eight Emmy nominations.

Just like last year, “Abbott Elementary” is the only broadcast network show cited in the Best Comedy Series race (and all top series races for that matter) about the lives of teachers being documented at an underfunded elementary school that is predominantly Black. Only Amazon Freevee’s “Jury Duty...

Emmy-Nominated Artisans of ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Abbott Elementary’ and More On Defying Tropes and Crafting the Unexpected This Season
Image
This season, television was pushed to its limits and into spaces that teetered genres and kept audiences guessing. From an improv show about a fake court trial to mockumentaries about public schools and vampires, a sci-fi drama about nuns, the 2023 Emmy nominations were a grab bag full of interesting television, and artisans helped take them even further.

Variety’s Creative Collaborators: The Nominees brunch, hosted by Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay, brought together this year’s Emmy-nominated casting directors, designers, editors and other exciting creators to reflect on how they defied tropes and took fresh approaches to TV.

Panel guests included Tom Campbell, EP of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”; Susie Farris, casting director on “Jury Duty”; Chris Gehrt, casting director on “Abbott Elementary”; Yana Gorskaya, editor for “What We Do in The Shadows”; Michael Harte, picture editor for “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”; Charlene Lee, casting director on “Beef”; Arlene Martin,...

The invite-only brunch will take place in Los Angeles on August 8. Both conversations will be moderated and hosted by senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay.

2023 Emmy Predictions: Best Comedy Series Casting
Image
The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.

The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...
