Exclusive: Walters Media Group, the recently launched shingle of veteran producer Gary Michael Walters, has acquired the film rights to The Third Parent, the acclaimed creepypasta from writer Elias Witherow. Set to write and direct the feature adaptation, in his feature debut, is producer David Michaels.

The feature take is set amidst the 4th of July celebration, as a disturbing figure named Tommy Taffy emerges. Disguised as a human, he infiltrates a suburban neighborhood and imposes authoritarian rule over an unsuspecting family.

Director and co-writer Miles Joris-Peyrafitte's The Good Mother adds to the burgeoning subgenre of thrillers set against the backdrop of the opioid crisis. Unlike recent TV series like Netflix's Painkiller and Hulu's Dopesick, The Good Mother doesn't take a wide view of the crisis. There are no scenes set at pharmaceutical companies or in their boardrooms. Instead, the occasional flashes of social commentary are secondary to the central narrative about a grieving woman determined to achieve justice for her murdered son. The daughter of the famed The Fabelmans helmer, Spielberg drew acclaim for directing The Right Way, the Owen King-scripted short film that starred Hopper Penn and Brian D’Arcy James, which premiered at the last Tribeca. The Santa Fe International Film Festival is set to screen Night of the Cooters, the short film produced by George R.R. Martin and directed by Vincent D’Onofrio. Martin and D’Onofrio will attend the event for a Q&a scheduled for Wednesday, October 19 at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.

“We wrapped principal photography on Night of the Cooters back in August, you may recall,” he said in a statement. “That’s our adaptation of the classic short story by the one and only Howard Waldrop. Shot entirely in greenscreen in Santa Fe, from a screenplay by Joe Lansdale. Directed by Vincent d’Onofrio, who also starred. After that, we turned it over to the wizards at Trioscope, who have been busily working on it ever since with their groundbreaking animation process.”

For almost 30 years, the Oldenburg Film Festival has been championing a very specific flavor of fiercely independent cinema.

Equally inspired by the New Hollywood genre films of the 1970s and the bootstraps indie cinema of the 1990s, Oldenburg has carved out a niche unlike any of the major international festivals. Instead of playing the same fall festival hits as Cannes, Venice and Toronto, Oldenburg continues to spotlight overlooked or forgotten movies that don’t fit the industry’s familiar categories.

For the 29th festival, which runs Sept. 14-18, The Hollywood Reporter took a look back at five indie gems from Oldenburg’s weird and wonderful history.

Jan-Ole Gerster’s A Coffee In Berlin, a droll, Jim Jarmusch-inspired day-in-the-life-of-a-German-slacker drama, premiered at the Munich Film Festival.

George R. R. Martin’s adaptation of Howard Waldrop’s short story “Night of the Cooters” won best sci-fi at this year’s LA Shorts International Film Festival.

Directed by Vincent D’Onofrio, who also stars, the short film — a “tall tale” about aliens invading Texas in the 1800s — is a passion project borne out of 60-odd years of friendship between Martin and Waldrop. The project is a combination of live action and state-of-the-art CG.

“Night of the Cooters” was led by production studio Trioscope (“The Liberator”) and artistically steered by D’Onofrio, who directs and stars as “Sheriff Lindley.” Ramin Djawadi (“Game of Thrones”) composed the score.

“Night of the Cooters” also features Hopper Penn (“Signs of Love”), Harrison Page (“Better Things”), Luce Raines (“The Marksman”), Elias Gallegos (“The Marksman”), Cristin McCleary (“Westworld”), Martin Sensmeier (“Westworld”) and newcomers Jazzy Kim O’Brien (“The Creepers”) and Darius Eteeyun (“Rutherford Falls”).

LA-based Blue Fox Entertainment has added Sahar Mosayebi’s real-life Iranian swimmer drama Orca and to its growing Cannes sales.

The Iranian drama follows a woman who survives a horrific attack by her estranged husband and finds solace as an endurance swimmer, eventually overcoming political and religious hurdles in a bid to swim further than anyone has done before with her hands bound. Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired the worldwide rights to “Jane,” a YA thriller starring “Riverdale’s” Madelaine Petsch.

The cast also includes Grammy-nominated singer songwriter Chlöe Bailey, Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo, and model Chloe Yu. Blue Fox Entertainment will release “Jane” theatrically this fall, with the film debuting simultaneously on Creator+. Robin Wright and Billy Bob Thornton are set to star in a thriller from director Ben Young called “Where All Light Tends to Go,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Bankside Films will be introducing the movie to buyers and production is scheduled for November.

Hopper Penn also stars in the film, which comes from a script by “Appaloosa” writer Robert Knott and is based on a 2015 novel of the same name by David Joy.

“Where All Light Tends to Go” is set in the Appalachian Mountains and is a thriller about a boy whose father is a domineering and violent crime lord, but when he meets the girl of his dreams and looks to escape his father’s control, he has to go head to head with his father who will stop at nothing to keep control.

George R.R. Martin has set his next project for screen, the short film Night of Cooters, based on Howard Waldrop 1987 sci-fi novel. Vincent D’Onofrio will direct and is set to star as Sheriff Lindley. Trioscope Studios will animate the film.

Earlier this week, the Game of Thrones author revealed the short film project on his blog. According to Martin, Night of the Cooters is “all about the time Martians invaded Pachuco, Texas.”

“Night of the Cooters is a short story, and our version is going to be a short film,” he shared. “I’d guess it will come in somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes, shot with a combination of live action and state-of-the-art animation. If you loved the story, we think you will love our movie.”
