The Tragic True Story Behind Brazil's Best International Feature Winner I'm Still Here
Image
Unfortunately, few mainstream audiences have seen 2025's Best International Feature winner at the Oscars, I'm Still Here, which beat out the widely controversial Emilia Peréz. Due to a limited release in select theaters around the U.S., the film has remained largely inaccessible to American audiences. Thankfully, after the film earned an Oscar for Best International Feature, more audiences are seeking out independent cinemas that are screening the film.

I'm Still Here tells the riveting story of the Paiva family living in a beachside house in Rio de Janeiro in the 70s during Brazil's Military Dictatorship. Life for the Paivas seems normal and carefree until their father, Rubens, a former congressman, is taken for questioning and does not return. The film centers around his wife, Eunice, as she grapples with her husband's disappearance and fights for answers regarding what happened to him.

The Film Is a Brutally Honest Depiction of the Military Regime in Brazil.

As The Brutalist prepares to take over the Oscars, the film has landed in some controversy thanks to its editor Dávid Jancsó’s recent comments. I'm Still Here Review: Brazil's Oscar Entry Is A Tense Political Drama That Puts Family First
Image
This review was originally published on October 26, 2024 as a part of our Middleburg Film Festival coverage.

I’m Still Here, Walter Salles’ latest film, is all about the profoundness of feeling in an unstable, tumultuous time, and how it rocks the boat of a seemingly stable family. The Brazilian film is a family drama wrapped in a political story. It’s focused primarily on Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres) and her five children after her husband, Rubens (Selton Mello) — a former congressman who was ousted when the Brazilian Military Dictatorship took over — is disappeared in 1971. Written by Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega, I’m Still Here is an evocative, nuanced portrait of family and the lasting imprint of politics.

I'm Still Here is set during the early 1970s military dictatorship in Brazil, focusing on the Paiva family. As the regime intensifies, Rubens, Eunice, and their five children live in an open house by the beach in Rio.

‘I’m Still Here’ Is a Hell of a Showcase for a Brazilian Star
Image
Established via a coup in 1964, the Fifth Brazilian Republic had been in place for close to seven years when government officials showed up at the house of Rubens Paiva. He had been a former Congressman who’d been vocal about the regime change back in the day, but Paiva was out of politics now and working as an engineer in Rio de Janeiro. Still, the men had some questions for him in regard to leftist groups who may or may not have been involved with a recent kidnapping. They asked...

A mother's resilience becomes revolutionary in I'm Still Here
Image
The dizzying part of living under an authoritarian regime is how it makes the very act of caretaking feel like a radical act. When maintaining a home in the face of encroaching fear and paranoia, surveillance and retaliation become emblems of opposition. Yet the mere appearance of normalcy can often also feel indistinguishable from capitulation.

‘I’m Still Here’ Review: Walter Salles Returns Home With the Powerful Story of a Broken Family’s Resistance
Image
Walter Salles’ 1998 international breakthrough, Central Station, earned an Oscar nomination for the magnificent Fernanda Montenegro. Now in her 90s, the actress turns up toward the end of the director’s first feature in his native Brazil in 16 years, the shattering I’m Still Here (Ainda Estou Aqui), in a role that requires her to speak only through her expressive eyes. What makes the connection even more poignant is that she appears as the elderly, infirm version of the protagonist — a woman of quiet strength and resistance played by Montenegro’s daughter, Fernanda Torres, with extraordinary grace and dignity in the face of emotional suffering.

Many powerful films have been made about the 21 years of military dictatorship in Brazil, from 1964 through 1985, just as they have about similar oppressive regimes in neighboring South American countries like Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. The human rights abuses of systematic torture, murder and forced disappearances represent an...

‘I’m Still Here’ Review: Walter Salles’ Love Letter To Brazil Is A Powerful Warning From History – Venice Film Festival
Image
As the title might suggest, Walter Salles’ first dramatic feature in 12 years is ultimately a celebration of Brazil — not only of the resilience of its liberalism under tyrannical rulers, but of its sunlight, its carnival spirit and the delicious blue of the sea that rolls onto Rio de Janeiro’s broad beaches. I’m Still Here tells the true story of the Paivas and their five children, whose easy, giggling closeness is documented by middle daughter Eliana with her Super 8 camera — the Christmas present of choice in 1970 — in a film we see within the film. The military dictatorship has its grip on the country. It is an act of rebellion to be happy.

So we watch the Paivas, a couple still visibly in love after a few decades of marriage, playing beach volleyball with their children, dad-dancing to pop songs and eating lavish dinners. Their rented house is already too small for them all,...

Hogwarts Legacy Hidden Lore Reveals One Story From A Underrated Harry Potter Game
Image
A painting in Hogwarts Legacy connects to lore from the older game Wonderbook: Book of Spells. Hogwarts Legacy draws on various corners of the Harry Potter franchise for worldbuilding, including obscure sources. The story of Illyuis in the painting has a detailed backstory from Book of Spells, adding depth to the Wizarding World lore.

A hidden secret in Hogwarts Legacy reveals a piece of lore that connects the game to a much older and less remembered Harry Potter game. Hogwarts Legacy is full of Easter eggs that both expand the lore of Harry Potter and connect the game to other aspects of the franchise, some more easily recognized than others. With such an expansive universe to draw on, it can even be surprisingly easy at times to mistake previously established lore for brand-new information.

Considering just how many small details are included in Hogwarts Legacy, it is unsurprising that the...

One Wizard's Patronus Went Very, Very Wrong
Image
It's important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. Cbr supports the hard work of industry professionals on properties fans know and love and the wider world of Harry Potter that fans have adopted as their own. You can find Cbr's continuing coverage on Rowling here.

The Patronus charm is one of the more symbolic and spectacular spells in Harry Potter. The spell plays a considerable role in the books and movies from The Prisoner of Azkaban onward and serves as a benchmark demonstration of the purity and power of its caster. It physically demonstrates the perpetual struggle between good and evil, with the spell a blast of untainted energy and its target, the Dementors, the closest thing that exists to pure malice and wickedness.

As a result, a Patronus is not only a tough spell to cast; it is also only able...

Documentary Review: Under the Sky of Damascus (2023) by Heba Khaled, Talal Derki, Ali Wajeeh
Image
In the end, I will end up becoming annoying, but I have to say once more that documentaries prove that “Truth is stranger than fiction” repeatedly in the most pointed way. “Under the Sky of Damascus” a movie focusing on a group of young Syrian women who decide to produce a play using anonymous statements of women that have suffered in the hands of men, while also making the particular documentary about their efforts, is definitely one of those films, as the result is as meta as it is shocking.

While the consequences of war in Syria are known throughout the world, the misogyny and overall violence against women, both domestically and in the workplaces, is not something that is exactly discussed. Five young women, Farah, Eliana, Inana, Souhir, and Grace come together to highlight the issue through a stage play, despite the fact that they realize the problems this...

‘Under the Sky of Damascus’ Review: A Shattering Peek at Life for Syrian Women
Image
A sense of foreboding haunts Under the Sky of Damascus, a sobering documentary directed by Syrian filmmakers Talal Derki, Heba Khaled and Ali Wajeeh.

The film opens with a vindicating interview: The Syrian actress Sabah Al-Salem takes a long drag of her cigarette before recounting how her refusal to sleep with a high-ranking military officer landed her in prison. She looks down at the dining room table as she answers the gentle prodding of her interviewers. “You must have heard of the problems I encountered,” she says in response to their inquiries.

The interviewers — Farah and Souhir — respond with nods. Yes, they have heard of the abuse Al-Salem faced. They know that she was abandoned by friends in the film industry and all but disappeared from public life. They also understand, on a personal level, how their deeply misogynistic country offers no recourse or salvation for women. When Al-Salem says...

Berlin: ‘Under The Sky Of Damascus’ Explores Sexual Politics In Syria, Where Women Face Constant Threat Of Violence From Men
Image
Millions of women in the Muslim world live under the dominion of men, subject to their rules, confined by their power. The documentary Under the Sky of Damascus, making its world premiere tonight at the Berlin Film Festival, examines the alarming gender politics in one ancient locality — the capital of Syria.

“Women are more enslaved than ever in these times,” actress Sabah Al Salem declares in the film directed by Heba Khaled, Oscar nominee Talal Derki and Ali Wajeeh. “The biggest exploitations we face are of a sexual nature.”

The film documents an attempt by a female-led theater company to create a bold play about the power imbalance in Syrian society, based on interviews conducted with women from a variety of backgrounds. Many of those testimonies are seen in the documentary, offering stark insight into the reality faced by Syrian women.

“When my dad gets mad, he tends to be aggressive,...
