Doug Richard appeared as a Dragon in the first two series of the BBC programme, and was an adviser to David Cameron until three years ago.
He has been accused of three counts of sexual activity with a 13-year-old girl, and one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The American-born businessman currently lives in Cambridge, and will appear at City of London Magistrates' Court on October 5.
The 56-year-old - who is married with three children - has strongly denied the claims.
He said in a statement: "I absolutely deny the allegations made about me. It would be inappropriate to comment further given that the police are at a very early stage of their investigation."

BBC Two has revealed the three new Dragons who will join Peter Jones and Deborah Meaden on Dragons' Den.
Duncan Bannatyne, Kelly Hoppen and Piers Linney quit their roles at the end of the 12th series, which concluded on Sunday (March 15) night.
Moonpig.com creator Nick Jenkins, global clothing manufacturer and serial retail entrepreneur Touker Suleyman, and global restaurant entrepreneur Sarah Willingham will begin filming on the 13th series next week.
"I have always preferred the start-up stage to running a larger mature business. It is a more exhilarating journey and requires instinctive, fast decision-making," Jenkins said. "There is often not much information to analyse and the risk of failure is ever present.

Piers Linney has announced that he is to leave Dragons' Den after two years.
The businessman has decided that he now aims to concentrate on his cloud computing company Outsourcery.
"I have enjoyed every minute of my time on Dragons' Den and feel honoured to have had the opportunity to contribute to such an iconic and long-running TV show and to have been the first Dragon with Afro Caribbean heritage," said Linney.
"It is now the right time for me to move on, although entrepreneurship and diversity are two of my greatest passions so I will continue to focus my energies on supporting both.
"It has been a great experience and a pleasure to share with millions of viewers the growing importance of digital innovation and how the technology and creative sectors are making their profound marks on the evolving landscape of British business.
"It will be interesting to see who takes my seat.

The 65-year-old - one of only two remaining original Dragons - explained today that he will quit after the current series has finished recording.
Bannatyne suggested that he is leaving the show "due to other business commitments" but also claimed that it is time for another business leader to take his seat.
"I have had the time of my life as a Dragon," he said. "I have made numerous investments and taken part in a landmark TV programme that has promoted entrepreneurship to an entire generation of Britons.
"However, after the 2014 recordings, I do not plan to make any further investments on the programme so I thought it fair to ask producers to offer my seat to somebody else. There are only so many times I can say, 'I'm out'."

An entrepreneur who successfully secured a deal on last night's Dragons' Den later changed his mind, it has been revealed.
Last night's (March 2) series finale saw James Roupell receive offers from all five Dragons for his children's travel pack business Bobo Buddies.
After negotiating the figures behind the deal, he eventually accepted a joint offer from Peter Jones and Deborah Meaden.
However, soon after leaving the BBC studio, he regretted his decision, The Daily Telegraph reports.
"Standing there, surrounded by film crew and cameras, with all eyes on you, is so surreal," he said. "You're under so much pressure to make a decision. I was trying to think rationally. It was only once I'd left that I thought, 'What have I done?'"
His accepted offer saw him receive £50,000 in exchange for a 40% stake in his business. This would reduce to 30% if targets were met.
"They were very persuasive," he said.

Dragons' Den investor Duncan Bannatyne has told Digital Spy that co-star Deborah Meaden will "refuse" to be made fun of on Strictly Come Dancing.
Speaking at the National Lottery Stars gala last night (September 5), the health club boss predicted that 54-year-old Meaden will "be in for a few weeks" after she makes her Strictly debut tomorrow.
"I danced with Deborah for Let's Dance for Comic Relief [in 2009] and she's pretty good," Bannatyne said.
"I think she'll give it back to the judges and the public will warm to her, so I think she'll be in for a few weeks."
Asked if he feared Meaden had been cast as the 'joke' contestant, Bannatyne referenced a fellow Let's Dance co-star when he said: "No, she won't be a Jo Brand character. Absolutely not. She'll refuse."

Dragons' Den returned for an 11th series last night (August 11), with some brand new Dragons in tow.
Kelly Hoppen was joined by Piers Linney on the panel, alongside regulars Deborah Meaden, Duncan Bannatyne and Peter Jones.
The interior designer has revealed that she had to make some difficult decisions during the filming of the latest series.
She told The Mirror: "It was heartbreaking seeing some people like that. I did get quite emotional a few times because you want to go up to them and give them a hug, but you can't because you're up against the clock.
"My usual business deals take a - couple of months to decide on. In the Den, no pitch lasts longer than an hour-and-a-half. You have to extract information, so there's no time to mollycoddle."
Hoppen said of the other Dragons: "It was enchanting how, as a new dragon, the others really took care of me.

A trailer for the new series of Dragons' Den has debuted.
The trailer - which features footage of newly recruited Dragons Piers Linney and Kelly Hoppen - was unveiled today (July 29) ahead of the show's return in August.
The pair replace Hilary Devey and Theo Paphitis on the show, after both decided not to return to their roles. They join Duncan Bannatyne, Deborah Meaden and Peter Jones on the panel.
Linney recently told Digital Spy that he felt the BBC series was in need of a revamp, saying: "Personally, I've watched the programme previously and I think it needed to be reinvigorated and freshened up."
"I think what's good about Kelly and Piers is that they bring a different dynamic," co-star Meaden added.
Dragons' Den's eleventh series begins next month on BBC Two.

New Dragons' Den star Piers Linney has claimed that the BBC Two business show had started to look repetitive and stale in recent years and that he joined the programme to "freshen up" the series.
Linney and Kelly Hoppen are the two new 'Dragons' for the show's 11th series, which launches on BBC Two in August.
Speaking to Digital Spy about why he signed up for the show, Linney said: "Personally, I've watched the programme previously and I think it needed to be reinvigorated and freshened up.
"If you saw a re-run from last year or three years ago, you probably wouldn't know the difference.

Linney's new co-star Peter Jones described the changes for the 2013 series as "refreshing", while Deborah Meaden claimed that the new 'Dragons' had changed the show's dynamic.

Dragons' Den star Duncan Bannatyne has criticised former co-star Hilary Devey.
The businessman claimed Devey would often arrive up to six hours late on the set of the BBC series.
He also stated that she would likely have been fired from the show had she not quit last year.
"I don't miss Hilary. She was never on set, she was always late," he told The Sun.
"Hilary can turn up six hours late and walk in like nothing has happened. And then say, 'I wasn't late'."
The Scot continued: "I don't think she would have had another year on Dragons' Den. I think she would have been let go if she hadn't left."
Dragons' Den will introduce interior designer Kelly Hoppen and former investment banker Piers Linney as replacements for the outgoing Devey and Theo Paphitis.
Bannatyne said of the new additions to the den: "Kelly has got an amazing insight into design and nutrition.

Dragons' Den has appointed designer Kelly Hoppen MBE as one of the new 'Dragons' for series 11.
Hoppen has 37 years of experience in the design industry, runs the Kelly Hoppen Design School and has fronted Channel 5's Superior Interiors.
She started her career at the age of 16, when she designed a family friend's kitchen, and she was awarded an MBE for design in 2009. She is also an ambassador for the Prince's Trust and the Prince's Initiative for Mature Enterprise.
"I have always been passionate about championing entrepreneurs, so being able to take it to the next level by investing my money in innovative new businesses is very exciting," said Hoppen.

Kelly Hoppen is in a ''different league financially'' to the other Dragons' Den stars. The interior designer has joined the panel of the BBC business show - where hopefuls pitch their ideas to successful entrepreneurs - but sources claim she doesn't have the same financial clout to invest as the show's other stars; Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne and Deborah Meaden. A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ''In some of the shows Dragons part with £100,000 in 10 minutes, and it doesn't...

Thanks to having a remarkably packed schedule for Monday, I'm writing this on Sunday night, so, you know, if anything really important or notable happens sometime Monday just assume I mentioned it because I'm totally up to date with the news and happenings and not just a pop culture junkie who ignores most items of significance unless they threaten to bump my shows or become trending topics on Twitter. But seriously, I found the more I paid attention to the news coverage the more I had the tendency to get angry and corner poor, helpless people at parties ranting about either what was on the news or the way it was covered so really, it's best for everyone involved if I just keep to my little sphere of all the television I'm peripherally aware of but don't watch and the parts of the internet involving drunk text messages and cute animals doing funny things.

No one could blame you if you imagined even for a second that a show about flashy sports cars wasn’t your cup of tea. Until last year I was in the same shabby, Winnebago [read: boat]. Usually, when someone says to me “It must be good, look at how many people watch it!” I laugh it off. Television programming tends to be more successful the more mindless it is, I’m sorry if you disagree, but more often than not it’s the plain-spoken truth. American shows like American Idol pat themselves on the back when they hit 38 million viewers per episode. Top Gear? It boasts 350 million viewers worldwide and frankly, I can’t blame a single one of them.
Hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May love themselves a fast, sleek, beautifully styled automobile. They rarely agree on which car fits all those descriptions, but that’s half the fun.

ABC is taking a dive into Mark Burnett's "The Shark Tank."
The network has handed out a pilot order to the unscripted project, an adaptation of the Japanese reality format "Dragon's Den."
Sony Pictures TV is producing the show, which features aspiring entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas to moguls, aka the "Sharks," in hopes of landing investment funds.
This is the second reality competition series for budding entrepreneurs at ABC. The network aired two seasons of "American Inventor," a brainchild of Simon Cowell and Peter Jones. Jones is one of the "Dragons," the wealthy judges on the successful British version of "Dragon's Den," which aired its sixth cycle this summer.
The arena of business-themed reality shows is a familiar one for Burnett, who also created and is executive producing "The Apprentice," which returns with a second celebrity edition in January.
