Fox Corp. has put increasing amounts of money behind news and sports in recent years. But that doesn’t mean the company is completely free of drama.

A landmark $787.5 million settlement made Tuesday between Fox and the voting-technology company Dominion Voting Systems does not end what is likely to be a period of tumult for the owner of Fox News Channel and the Fox broadcasting network. The payment to Dominion to keep an explosive investigation into how Fox News disseminated conspiracy theories related to the 2020 presidential election out of the public sphere does nothing to alleviate another wave of scrutiny likely to come from another, similar lawsuit.

Dominion came away the monetary victor in the company’s defamation settlement with Fox News, but the cable TV network’s statement “acknowledging certain claims about Dominion to be false” has left much to be desired from those who wanted to see Fox admit to lying about the 2020 election results on air.

When questioned on Wednesday by “Good Morning America” co-anchor George Stephanopoulos, who noted that “what you didn’t get was an apology,” Dominion CEO John Poulos admitted the statement that Fox News put out was not what he wrote.

“There was an acknowledgment, and certainly it was not the way I wrote it. I had some conversations with my team, my co-founder and I, and at the end of the day, the court system is really about accountability. We feel we got it. All of the facts that we discovered during the case had come to light.”

About 15 minutes after a surprise settlement with Fox on Tuesday, Dominion Voting Systems’ lead attorney Justin Nelson stood before a horde of reporters waiting for any details on how the case was resolved.

“The truth matters. Lies have consequences…Today’s settlement of $787,500,000 represents vindication and accountability,” he said, as journalists feverishly tweeted and texted the amount.

Then Nelson went in to what the settlement means for Dominion and the country.

“The truth does not know red or blue. People across the political spectrum can and should disagree on issues even of the most profound importance. For our democracy to endure for another 250 years, and hopefully much longer, we must share a commitment to facts. Misinformation will not go away. It may only get worse. This litigation cannot solve all problems. All of us remain ever vigilant to find common factual ground. Today represents a ringing endorsement for truth, and for democracy.

In an unexpected and abrupt end to a legal battle that had fascinated the media industry, Fox Corporation and Dominion Voting Systems agreed to settle a much-discussed $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit mere hours after a jury had been seated to consider the matter in Delaware’s Superior Court.

Attorneys for the two sides had been set to deliver opening statements to the jury Tuesday afternoon. But that activity was delayed after Judge Eric M. Davis called for a lunch break. When he finally returned to the courtroom two hours later than originally planned, the matter was moot.

Update, 12:39 Pm Et: The judge presiding over Dominion’s defamation case against Fox pushed back on the network’s attorneys for their argument that Rupert Murdoch would be unable to testify live in the upcoming trial.

In a hearing on Tuesday, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis cited a letter he received from the Fox legal team arguing that “under Covid, he couldn’t travel, that he doesn’t have knowledge, that it can be difficult for him to come down.”

“Mr. Murdoch has claimed that he is traveling and that it would be an inconvenience,” Davis said. “But I also have people telling me that he has done some things recently that show he is hardly infirm and unable to travel around.”

Dominion Voting Systems on Tuesday sued Newsmax, One America News Network and former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne for defamation, seeking over $1.6 billion in damages. Also named in the complaint against Oan are Herring Networks owners Robert Herring and Charles Herring and on-air personalities Chanel Rion and Christina Bobb.

Dominion CEO John Poulos said Tuesday, “The defendants in today’s filings recklessly disregarded the truth when they spread lies in November and continue to do so today. We are filing these three cases today because the defendants named show no remorse, nor any sign they intend to stop spreading disinformation. This barrage of lies by the defendants and others have caused — and continue to cause — severe damage to our company, customers, and employees. We have no choice but to seek to hold those responsible to account.”

Dominion, a company at the center of conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, previously sued Fox News and Rudy Giuliani.

Dominion Voting Systems filed defamation suits against two backers of right-wing cable outlets, Newsmax Media Inc. and Herring Networks Inc., alleging the two companies readily spread falsehoods about Dominion’s role in the 2020 presidential election. The suits are the latest in Dominion’s efforts to recoup what it believes are damages made to its reputation by several partisan media companies, including Fox Corp.’s Fox News Channel.

Dominion also filed a suit against Patrick Byrne, the former chief executive of online retailers Overstock,com. The suits were filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and also name Herring Networks owners Robert Herring and Charles Herring as well as two personalities, Chanel Rion and Christina Bobb, who appear on the Herring’s cable outlet Oan.
