Monkey Man has proven to be an instant success at the domestic box office. The new action movie was produced, co-written, and directed by its star Dev Patel. Alongside a cast that also includes Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Sikandar Kher, Patel stars as Bobby, a young man who seeks violent revenge against the rich men who ruined his life. Relatively early in Dev Patel’s shaggy revenge flick Monkey Man, Bobby (Patel) finds himself with a wad of cash in a back alley shack looking for a gun. Dev Patel’s extreme action film Monkey Man swings into the top spot during Thursday previews at the box office, exorcising Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen with $1.4M to the origin story’s $725K. Monkey Man’s preview screening started at 5 Pm at 2,750 theaters on Thursday, while The First Omen screened at 7 Pm.

Meanwhile, Adam Wingard’s Monsterverse rumble, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, punched its way past $100M on Thursday, with estimates calling for $32M during its second weekend in cinemas. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues to dominate IMAX screens, while Monkey Man and The First Omen play on Plf screens.

Ever since it was announced in 2018, Monkey Man had a difficult journey to its release. Dev Patel’s directorial debut received setbacks due to covid restrictions, budgetary issues, and a broken hand of the writer/director/star (this last issue resulted in a change of choreography to ensure Patel could deliver fight scenes one-handed.)

Netflix acquired the film for worldwide distribution, a move which would have buried the film courtesy of a dreadful algorithm, yet that scenario was avoided courtesy of filmmaker Jordan Peele. The Get Out director acquired this film under his Monkeypaw Productions banner, intending to release the film into cinemas as part of his distribution deal with Universal Pictures. Since we’re now into the slow slide from Easter/Spring Break into the Summer cinema season, how about an Mma-style action thriller full of fights and daring escapes? Oh, you say we just had that in the remake of Road House just a couple of weeks ago. Well that flick, despite the director’s protests to the press, bypassed the multiplex and went right to a streaming service. And this new release almost went the same route until an Oscar-winning filmmaker saw it, bought it, and helped prep it for a wide theatrical debut. Oh, and speaking of debuts, this is the first feature directed by the star of a Best Picture Oscar winner over a dozen years ago. Yes, he was the lead in that, and he’s in the lead here as the mysterious avenger who is known as the Monkey Man. And no, he’s not another comics-based hero.

Actor Sikandar Kher is currently in the US to attend the premier of his maiden Hollywood film ‘Monkey Man’, an action thriller film directed by Indian origin British actor-filmmaker Dev Patel, whom he said is one of the best director’s he has worked with in his career so far.

‘Monkey Man’ is scheduled to have its premiere at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre followed by its release in the US on April 5.

The actor will join the star-studded cast for this grand event.

Talking to Ians about the film, Sikandar, who auditioned for the film 10 years ago, said: “It’s exciting that the film is finally releasing, it’s a labour of love. The film delves into Indian class disparity and crimes against the trans community, adding depth to the brutal narrative. Dev Patel punches, kicks, claws, and literally bites his way through repugnant enemies in a brutal actioner that runs overly long. Monkey Man addresses socioeconomic and sexual oppression with a bone-crushing, laborious delivery steeped in Hindu religious themes. The film can be too easily described as John Wick in India without the guns, but Patel will kick your ass and break a foot doing it. Actor/director Dev Patel opens this two-minute look behind the scenes of Monkey Man by quoting a quote from the film: “The pain will leave you once it’s finished teaching you.” Patel, who made his feature film directing debut with the action thriller, learned that lesson the hard way, breaking his foot and his hand during shooting.

Dev Patel has been a well-known, majorly respected actor in Hollywood for years dating back to his star-making performance in "Slumdog Millionaire."
