Action movies are dismissed in some circles as mindless displays of violence, but many of the genre's best movies are just as deep and intelligent as any drama. The action genre tends to get a bad wrap, because people generalize the genre based on some of its least substantial popcorn flicks. While it's true that action has the potential for shallow spectacle, this isn't the norm.
Many of the best action movies ever have deep stories that leave audiences with a lot to think about, even if some people simply see them as explosive and entertaining. In many cases, the action is only given meaning by the dynamics between the different characters and their personal journeys. This helps make action movies more exciting, and it also makes them linger in the memory.

Anil Sharma who was all for gritted teeth and clenched fists in Gadar, goes incurably lachrymose in his new film Vanvaas. Set in the saffron splendour of Varanasi, Sharma’s cinema is an old-fashioned weepie with a bleeding heart and visuals that exude an over-saturated emotional meltdown in fits and starts.
It is a familiar tale often told since Shakespeare’s King Lear, of ungrateful children, this time abandoning their father to die in Varanasi. But these progenies from hell are substantially more wretched, less interesting in their toxicity, than their counterparts in the past including the Bachchan bunch in Ravi Chopra’s Baghban.
Nana Patekar plays Tyagi, the dementia-riddled patriarch who spends all his time day dreaming about his dead wife. After being abandoned by his children and their wives in Varanasi (to the sound a clamorous Bhajan), Tyagi who suffers from what seems to be advanced dementia, befriends a mischievous tourist volunteer.

Dev Patel's action movie Monkey Man, compared to John Wick, impressed with high-octane action and political undertones. Originally set for Netflix, Monkey Man found a new home with Universal after Jordan Peele helped secure a theatrical release. Despite Netflix's concerns, Monkey Man saw critical acclaim and box office success, setting the stage for potential sequels.
Dev Patel's hit John Wick copycat Monkey Man is now streaming after Jordan Peele helped save it from Netflix. The original action movie described as an Indian John Wick debuted in theaters in April 2024 after plenty of anticipation. Although Dev Patel was already well-known thanks to his roles in Slumdog Millionaire, Lion, The Green Knight, and more, Monkey Man represented his directorial debut. The challenge of it coming in a gritty action movie that immediately brought John Wick comparisons only raised expectations about what could be in store.
Monkey Man ultimately delivered on these high expectations.

Dev Patel directs, co-writes and stars in Monkey Man, an ultraviolent revenge thriller which was rescued from Netflix and given a theatrical release by producer Jordan Peele. A blend of John Wick-style violence, Indian mythology and a palpable Slumdog atmosphere, it’s an exciting debut for Patel that delivers several pulse-quickening punches and then rips out your arteries for good measure afterwards.
The script makes good use of an unconventional structure, whereby we meet a character known as “Kid” (Patel) as he attempts to execute a poorly thought-out revenge plan against local corrupt cop Rana (Sikandar Kher), in the fictional Indian city of Yatana (effectively standing in for Mumbai). After the attempt fails, Kid is a wanted man, so he hides...

Relatively early in Dev Patel’s shaggy revenge flick Monkey Man, Bobby (Patel) finds himself with a wad of cash in a back alley shack looking for a gun. His grimy arms dealer, unveiling his wares, immediately asks him if he likes John Wick, and offers him a Chinese replica of a gun that Keanu Keeves’s Wick used in one of the films, to which Bobby asks if he has something smaller so that he can be a little closer to his target.
That’s an almost innocuous scene in the grand scheme of Patel’s feature directorial debut, but it’s the perfect encapsulation of the film’s ethos. Where the John Wick films are globe-trotting orgies of brutal, blood-soaked revenge, Monkey Man, as written by Patel, Paul Angunawela, and John Collee, is far more intimate, literally and figuratively. Eschewing sweeping, panoramic wide shots, almost as if it were allergic to them,...

Dev Patel is Kid in ‘Monkey Man’ (Photo Credit: Akhirwan Nurhaidir © Universal Studios)
Oscar nominee Dev Patel poured his heart and soul into Monkey Man, and his unwavering commitment resulted in a film that masterfully blends adrenaline-pumping action with thought-provoking social commentary. Patel’s feature film directorial debut hits an occasional rough patch, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s incredibly entertaining.
It’s hard to believe that the same Dev Patel who made his breakthrough in Slumdog Millionaire has now become a badass action star. The opening scenes introduce his character, Kid, as a brawler wearing a gorilla mask, his hidden face serving as a punching bag in an underground fight club. Winning isn’t his goal; earning cash is why he is in the ring. The more blood that flows from his beaten body, the higher the payment he receives from the club’s owner,...

Dev Patel literally poured his blood, sweat, and tears into bringing Monkey Man to the big screen. The same sacrifices apply to his lead character Kid, who works his way through fight after blood-soaked fight to get revenge against the authority figures responsible for his mom's death. Miraculously, both risks pay off, and then some.
Ever since its first trailer spontaneously dropped in January, there's been an immense level of hype for what Monkey Man was selling. Part of that came from the thrill of watching the Slumdog Millionaire and The Green Knight star juggle multiple tasks as a writer, first-time director and blockbuster action star, the last role he hasn't seriously revisited since the much-despised The Last Airbender adaptation. Others were impressed with the trailer's fight choreography and the promise of a John Wick 2.0 taking down Mumbai's 1% with extreme prejudice. Certainly, a producer credit by Jordan Peele --...

The bridge between Indian and American action cinema has unfortunately yet to be built. There are throughlines between the two industries, that's for sure; recently, Siddharth Anand's “Fighter” borrowed the luscious aesthetics and jingoistic tone of the “Top Gun” franchise, and the work of Lokesh Kanagaraj wouldn't quite be the way it is without his trusty, robust list of North American favorites. But there has yet to be a film that solidly unifies the nations with an equal balance of what makes each industries' take on high-octane thrills so heady. That is perhaps until now, with Dev Patel's American-produced, Mumbai-set one-man-army action-extravaganza “Monkey Man” that pounds its chest onto screens around the world with unparalleled levels of energy, swagger and savagery.

Since we’re now into the slow slide from Easter/Spring Break into the Summer cinema season, how about an Mma-style action thriller full of fights and daring escapes? Oh, you say we just had that in the remake of Road House just a couple of weeks ago. Well that flick, despite the director’s protests to the press, bypassed the multiplex and went right to a streaming service. And this new release almost went the same route until an Oscar-winning filmmaker saw it, bought it, and helped prep it for a wide theatrical debut. Oh, and speaking of debuts, this is the first feature directed by the star of a Best Picture Oscar winner over a dozen years ago. Yes, he was the lead in that, and he’s in the lead here as the mysterious avenger who is known as the Monkey Man. And no, he’s not another comics-based hero.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Monkey Man."
The medium of cinema is brilliantly, endlessly malleable. It's an art form able to communicate so many perspectives, stories, emotions and the like, yet there are some genres that feel especially inherent to the medium. Action is undeniably one of these; even the most basic, average action movie combines elements of sound, cinematography, actors giving performances that are equal parts physical and vocal, music, choreography and more. In other words, it takes every element available to the filmmaker to construct a convincing, engaging action sequence, something that can't be exactly replicated in, say, a song, picture, or painting.
Perhaps this is one reason why so many action films dabble in myth: the very construction of an action film requires the establishment of a hyper-reality, so it follows that larger-than-life themes, tropes, and traditions would fit inside such a world. This is a...

Dev Patel's intense action scenes showcase his transformation into a gritty action star. The film delves into Indian class disparity and crimes against the trans community, adding depth to the brutal narrative. Patel's directorial debut struggles with pacing due to excessive flashbacks and sentimental moments.
Dev Patel punches, kicks, claws, and literally bites his way through repugnant enemies in a brutal actioner that runs overly long. Monkey Man addresses socioeconomic and sexual oppression with a bone-crushing, laborious delivery steeped in Hindu religious themes. The film can be too easily described as John Wick in India without the guns, but Patel will kick your ass and break a foot doing it. He packs a visceral wallop in his feature directorial debut but goes overboard with good intentions. A dependence on excessive flashbacks and melodramatic close-ups strains patience between the savage beatdowns.

Actor/director Dev Patel opens this two-minute look behind the scenes of Monkey Man by quoting a quote from the film: “The pain will leave you once it’s finished teaching you.” Patel, who made his feature film directing debut with the action thriller, learned that lesson the hard way, breaking his foot and his hand during shooting.
“I poured all of myself into this. Every frame, every beat, every detail…and it’s been a ferocious process making this film,” explained the Oscar nominated actor.
Joining Patel in front of the camera are Sharlto Copley (District 9), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), and Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven). Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Makarand Deshpande (Rrr), Jatin Malik, and Zakir Hussain (Duranga) also star.

Dev Patel has been a well-known, majorly respected actor in Hollywood for years dating back to his star-making performance in "Slumdog Millionaire." Now, more than 15 years later, Patel is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut "Monkey Man," a movie that also sees him taking an action star turn. While "Monkey Man" was originally going to go directly to Netflix, Universal Pictures and "Get Out" director Jordan Peele rescued it and will be giving it a major theatrical release. Can this film become the next big original breakout action hit?
"Monkey Man" hits theaters next weekend and is currently eyeing an opening between $16 and $25 million, per Box Office Pro. That's an encouraging start given that Netflix originally spent around $30 million on the production. It's unclear what Universal had to pay to get the rights but it feels safe to assume it's probably around $40 million or less (before marketing...
