Pete Davidson Reveals Origins of ‘SNL’ Character Chad
Image
Pete Davidson recently revealed the origins of his memorable Chad character from his time on Saturday Night Live.

Characterized by his “Ok” catchphrase, Davidson’s Chad first appeared in a 2016 “Pool Boy” sketch with host and SNL alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus and appeared in sketches with Jennifer Lopez, Adele, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Mulaney and RuPaul. And Chad returned, alongside fellow SNL alum Laraine Newman, in the SNL50 anniversary special, which has been nominated for 12 Emmys.

Appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers Wednesday night, Davidson explained how the recurring character came to be.

“I don’t know if you know the origin of Chad, but it was a joke on me,” Davidson said. “‘Cause that’s how, if anybody ever gave me notes on set, I’d be like, ‘Ok, cool!'”

“[Mikey Day and writer Streeter Seidell] brought it to the table, and I was like, ‘I don’t get this.

Daniel Kaluuya Set to Write and Direct New Spider-Punk Movie
Image
After becoming a fan-favorite variant in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, one Spider is getting ready for his solo. Per Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation is developing a new animated film centered on the hard-rocking Spider-Punk, aka Hobie Brown. Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced the character in Miles Morales's multiverse adventure, will be picking up the pen this time to co-write the story with Ajon Singh. It's expected that he'll also jump back into the role of Hobie, though plot details and other specifics about the project have yet to be shared.

It's unclear at this time whether the Spider-Punk movie will connect to Christopher Miller and Phil Lord's Spider-Verse in some way, or if it's meant as a standalone story pulled from the comics. Hobie was created by Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel as an anti-establishment, punk-rock Spider-Man hailing from a world dominated by corporations and ruled under a fascist dictatorship.

'Big Mouth' Season 8 was my new streaming favorite of the week
Image
The series presents a view of adolescence that is as accurate as it is rare.

There are some shows that I prefer to watch right away when a new episode debuts, and others that, for whatever reason, don’t prompt the same level of urgency. “Big Mouth” falls into the latter category; I’ve been a fan of the series for many years, but I don’t believe I’ve ever watched the show on its season premiere date. Season 8 of “Big Mouth” is no exception, and though I’m a few months late to the party, the show was nevertheless the best thing I watched this week.

Sign Up $7.99+ / month netflix.com

Let’s start with the obvious: “Big Mouth” is hysterical. The show centers on a group of teens who are working their way through adolescence, and the group of imaginary critters that accompany them through this journey.

Marc Maron Documentary ‘Are We Good?’ Acquired by Utopia
Image
Independent and documentary film distributor Utopia has acquired the North American theatrical rights to “Are We Good?,” the Marc Maron biographical documentary that premiered at SXSW earlier this year.

Directed by Steven Feinartz, “Are We Good?” shares the life story of the actor, comedian and podcast host. It specifically emphasizes Maron’s self-reflective journey through grief after unexpectedly losing his wife, filmmaker and actress Lynn Shelton, to acute myeloid leukemia in 2020. The film chronicles how Maron returned to the stage in the wake of this tragedy while also exploring his career trajectory over the course of 40 years in the film and comedy industry.

“Are We Good?” includes exclusive interviews with comics John Mulaney, Nate Bargatze, David Cross and Michaela Watkins as well as footage from Maron’s 16 years hosting the acclaimed podcast, “Wtf,” which had guests including President Barack Obama, Andrew Garfield, Patton Oswalt and many additional recognizable faces.

Right-Wing Content Creator Exposed for Stealing John Mulaney’s Slur Routine
Image
Pretty soon, some conservative content creator is going to go viral with his hilarious story involving a diner jukebox and Tom Jones.

The last nine years of American culture’s slide to the right have proven that conservatives simply aren’t funny. When the political majority’s headlining comedians are Rob Schneider, a not-nearly-lucid Roseanne Barr and a professional open-mic host who once bombed so hard he nearly lost President Donald Trump the 2024 election, we know that American comedy culture is in a rough state, and the deluge of “comedic” culture warrior content on platforms that the Right previously wanted to ban has only exacerbated the GOP’s humor problem.

So when popular conservative TikToker, author and alleged drunk driver Joseph “The Older Millennial” Redden decided to make a “humorous” post on the controversial Chinese spyware app about political correctness and the sarcastic online movement to use the word “clanker...

Marc Maron on ‘The Bad Guys 2,’ His Reaction to Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ Being Canceled and Why Barack Obama Is His Dream Pick for Final ‘Wtf’ Guest
Image
Marc Maron says his dream guest for his final episode of “Wtf With Marc Maron” would be Barack Obama.

The former president appeared on a previous episode of Maron’s show back in June 2015.

“If we could get President Obama back, that would be good to give us a little hope or some sense of reflection,” he told Variety Wednesday at the premiere of his new animated movie “The Bad Guys 2” in Los Angeles. “Ground us a little bit.”

In June, Maron made headlines when he and producer Brendan McDonald decided to end the podcast that launched in 2009. Maron made the announcement in an episode with John Mulaney as his guest. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, Maron said that the podcast will air its final episode in the fall.

Coming off the heels of announcing the end of his podcast, Maron shared his reaction to the report on CBS...

YouTube Shows Are Increasingly Going To Netflix. Now The Streamer Wants To Make Them Bigger
Image
What do children’s entertainer Ms. Rachel, prank collective The Sidemen and dating show Pop The Balloon have in common? They are all people and projects that started on YouTube but have also ended up on Netflix.

The world of content creators has exploded in the last few years and has become the next big battle between two of the behemoths of the entertainment business.

The two companies have been increasingly competing for eyeballs, particularly on TV screens, and to some extent, talent, over the last twelve months.

In March, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said YouTube was useful for creators to “cut their teeth on” and called the Google-owned platform a “little bit of a farm league”.

“There’s a whole bunch of creators that I would put in the pro-am category that are making really interesting, compelling programming to watch,” he added at the Paley Media Council event.

The Bear Star Reacts to Possibility of Getting a Spinoff After Emmy Nom
Image
Academy Award-winning star Jamie Lee Curtis has shared her reaction to the possibility of starring in her own spinoff of FX’s The Bear series. For her Season 3 performance as Donna Berzatto, Curtis recently received another Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

During a recent interview with Variety, when asked about potentially starring in a Donna spinoff, Curtis immediately shut down the idea with a “Never, never” response, revealing her lack of interest in getting her own The Bear spinoff. In addition, the Halloween vet also opened up about what it was like to receive another Emmy nomination for playing the complicated role of Donna Berzatto.

“I can’t believe it,” Curtis said. “It’s just beautiful. It’s a beautiful show, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love it. I’m a fan of the show. I was a fan from the beginning,...

Seinfeld Is Making a Huge Comeback 27 Years Later
Image
Seinfeld is making a huge comeback in 2025, thirty-six years after the show originally premiered. It is skyrocketing in popularity on the digital charts.

FlixPatrol reports that Seinfeld has shot up to #2 on iTunes' Top 10 TV Shows in the United States as of July 19, 2025. The only series currently outperforming it is Charlie Sheen's hit sitcom, Two and a Half Men. The reason for Seinfeld's huge rise in the charts is likely due to the series being discounted on iTunes, with the Complete Seinfeld Collection currently available for $49.99, making it 50% off its usual $99.99 price.

Created by Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Jerry Seinfeld, the show is one of the most successful sitcoms from the 1990s. It ran for a total of nine seasons and aired 180 episodes with its ensemble cast that included Seinfeld as a fictional version of himself alongside his friends George Costanza (Jason Alexander), former girlfriend Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus...

What's next for Stephen Colbert? 5 options after Late Show cancelation
Image
Stephen Colbert delivered shocking news on Thursday night, revealing CBS has canceled The Late Show. After nearly a decade behind the desk, Colbert's tenure will end in May 2026. The decision will leave a sizeable void in late-night TV and Colbert without a job.

So what's next for Stephen Colbert? The 61-year-old comedian has been on television for decades, giving him a few options for the next chapter in his illustrious career. Here are five potential moves the departing Late Show host could make.

1. Move to Netflix

Stephen Colbert already followed in David Letterman's footsteps once, so why not do it again? Letterman found a new gig after The Late Show with My Next Guest on Netflix. Colbert could do something similar and bring his take on late-night to the streaming giant.

Netflix has shown an interest in late-night TV. Chelsea with Chelsea Handler, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj,...

Late-Night TV Is On The Precipice After CBS Axes Stephen Colbert; Insiders Lament “End Of An Era”
Image
Stephen Colbert was struggling to get through the opening line of his telecast on Thursday, announcing that his turn behind the desk of The Late Show was coming to an end, as well as the fact that CBS was ignominiously axing its storied late-night franchise altogether.

His wife, Evie Colbert, who was watching the taping, was visibly emotional, according to audience members, a group that erupted into boos as the comedian revealed the news that left the fans of his show, the 200 people that work on it and the wider late-night community in a state of shock.

Colbert was told of the cancelation on Wednesday and informed his staff ahead of the taping.

It was a stunning reversal from May when George Cheeks, Co-CEO Paramount Global and President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS, told Deadline that he “really likes our hand” at 11:30pm. Cheeks, who came up in...

In Praise of the Emmy Nominations’ Hidden Gems, from ‘Ren Faire’ to ‘Interview With the Vampire’
Image
I always think of the Emmy nominations as a data dump. Where the Golden Globes focus on the glitziest categories across film and television and organizations like the Screen Actors Guild drill down on specific disciplines, the Emmys are faced with the impossible task of summing up an entire year’s worth of TV. In the past few years, the Television Academy has responded to this overload by training its focus on just a handful of shows. The 77th Emmy Awards, which unveiled their nominees on Tuesday morning, are thus far no exception. Commentators already knew this would be a big year for “Severance,” “The Pitt,” “The White Lotus” and “The Studio” — and, lo and behold, it was.

But the sheer volume of awards and individuals up for them means that one can and should spend hours parsing the fine print for less visible, but no less significant, breakthroughs. To preserve my own sanity,...

Seth Meyers Loses Out On Late-Night Emmy Nom As Colbert, Kimmel & Stewart Battle It Out In Talk
Image
The tragic reduction of the number late-night shows nominated for Emmys has hit Seth Meyers.

The Late Night host has missed out on an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Talk Series category after it went down to only three places this year.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Daily Show, which is hosted on Monday nights by Jon Stewart, will compete in the category after also fending off competition from upstarts such as buzzy YouTube show Hot Ones and Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.

Last year, The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert were nominated in the category, with The Daily Show winning.

In 2023, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Problem with Jon Stewart were nominated, with The Daily Show also winning.

Emmys 2025: Where’s My Show? Why Some Of Your Favorites Won’t Be Emmy-Nominated This Year
Image
Emmy nominations are coming! It’s that time of year again, where the best talent in television is (hopefully) rewarded for all that hard work and excellence. Come Tuesday, the verdict will be in as the noms for the 77th Primetime Emmys are announced. But some of television’s best and brightest will definitely not be on the docket. Read on to find out why.

Of course, not everyone gets to take home the gold, and indeed, not everyone gets as far as a nomination, but some are left out of contention for reasons that have nothing to do with audience or critical appreciation or Television Academy voter preferences.

For example, last year, due to strike-affected delays and production timing, popular shows like The Bear Season 3, both parts of Bridgerton Season 3, House of the Dragon and The Boys were not eligible for nominations.

The Television Academy’s eligibility rules state...

5 High-Flying ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketches About Superman
Image
Every generation of fans gets a new Superman on the big screen, and this week’s premiere of the James Gunn version marks yet another relaunch of the comic book movie franchise. Saturday Night Live is on a similar cycle, with each generation of comedians taking a stab at the Man of Steel.

Here are five of the funniest takes on Superman from the past 50 years…

1 Superhero Party

Bill Murray as Superman hosts a 1970s dinner party with girlfriend Lois Lane, sporting a super-apron as he pops nachos in the oven. A bevy of costumed heroes show up to smoke and drink, but it’s John Belushi who steals the show as the Incredible Hulk. First, he accidentally sits on the Invisible Girl in the bathroom, then destroys the toilet with his gamma-radiated poop. “Take it easy,” he tells the gagging Flash. “It’s not supposed to smell like roses.

Image
As we enter the heart of summer, the Television Critics Association has unveiled its annual awards nominations for the hottest shows on television over the 2024-2025 season. Across 12 categories ranging from comedy and drama to news and variety, these accolades honor the finest artistry from actors, creators, and programs as a whole on the small screen. For the 41st iteration, there was a clear standout in the eyes of the association's 235 professional television journalists, with Apple TV+'s Severance leading the pack as the only series to earn five nominations, including for the big prize of Program of the Year. The rest of the field, however, featured many newcomers alongside returning favorites in a testament to the ever-evolving modern television landscape.

In its long-anticipated second season, Severance was powered to success by performances from Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and the fan-favorite Tramell Tillman, all of whom were nominated in the Individual Achievement in Drama category.

Director Rhys Thomas on Not “Getting” ‘Saturday Night Live’ at First, ‘Hawkeye’ and Helen Mirren

Saturday Night Live, Hawkeye and Comrade Detective director Rhys Thomas shared insights into his work and career in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, giving a masterclass as part of the Industry Days program of the 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff). The Emmy Award-winning producer and director shared that when he joined Saturday Night Live, it took him a while to fully understand the brand of humor it represented. “As a Brit, I didn’t get it at first,” he shared about SNL, explaining that he couldn’t watch the show growing up in the U.K. “I wasn’t really that familiar with Saturday Night Live. [But] I knew that it was an institution.”

We Have This 'Halloween' Star, 66, To Thank for This Cameo on ‘The Bear’ Season 4
Image
The Bearhas now become known for its cameos. It started with brief appearances from Jon Bernthalthroughout Season 1 as Michael Berzatto. Then the list grew and included stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Donna Berzatto on the series, and the role got Curtis an Emmy Award for her work. But while Donna and the Berzatto clan, which does include actors like Sarah Paulson, John Mulaney, Bob Odenkirk, and more, are great, we have Curtis to thankfor a completely different cameo in the series as well. Albert (Rob Reiner) joined the show in Season 4 and gave fans of The Beef of Chicagoland a little bit of hope.

Reiner, who recently did an interview People to talk about the anniversary of his mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, revealed that Curtis is why he ended up taking on the role in the first place. "She had told me she was on the seasons before,...

‘Back to the Future’ Couldn’t Be Made Today Because People Would Get the Wrong Idea About Doc and Marty, Screenwriter Claims
Image
This week marks the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future, meaning that it’s been four whole decades since the world was first introduced to Marty McFly and his mad scientist/insurance fraudster pal Doc Brown. The beloved film and its two sequels have subsequently become a bedrock of modern pop-culture, inspiring a recent stage musical, a Saturday morning cartoon series and a whole lot of real-life hoverboards that do absolutely nothing.

To celebrate the occasion, co-screenwriter Bob Gale and star Lea Thompson spoke with The Guardian about the film’s legacy, and argued the movie just couldn’t be made today for various reasons.

Thompson pointed out that “if you made Back to the Future in 2025 and they went back 30 years, it would be 1995 and nothing would look that different. The phones would be different but it wouldn’t be like the strange difference between the ‘80s and...

The Bear Season 4's Oscar-Winning Guest Star Teases Potential Return
Image
Before The Bear was renewed for a fifth season, Academy Award-winning star Brie Larson talked about her surprise appearance in Season 4, Episode 7, titled "Bears," in which she portrayed Francie Fak, a character who had been teased throughout the show’s previous seasons.

When asked about potentially reprising her role in Season 5, Larson told Vanity Fair that she definitely wants to return after having a great time working with the cast of The Bear. "I had the absolute best time, would fly across the country and work with them for one hour if that's what it took," she shared. "I don't know if anybody knows what the future holds, but I think it's a really nice place that their relationship ends. Maybe men deal with this too, but I know, as a woman, it's such a relatable thing," he added, referring to her character.

The Bear Season 4’s Biggest Cameo Star Hints At Future Return: “I Really Want To Be There”
Image
One of the biggest guest stars in FX's The Bearseason 4 has revealed whether they will return in future episodes after solving a series-long mystery in the latest installment.

The Bear season 4 featured several returning guest stars, such as Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Josh Hartnett, John Mulaney, and Gillian Jacobs, who is the real-life wife of series creator Christopher Storer. It also introduced new characters, such as Danielle Deadwyler's Chantel and Brie Larson's Francie Fak.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Larson, who plays Captain Marvel in the MCU, finally spoke out about her "top secret" cameo in The Bear season 4. Her character, Francie, has had a longstanding beef with Abby Elliott's Natalie "Sugar" Berzatto for unknown reasons.

It's revealed, however, that the two may have had a fling in the past, to the dismay of Sugar's husband Pete. Larson touched on Francie's character and the possibility...

Brie Larson Reveals How The MCU Helped Keep Her Cameo In This 93% Rt Comedy A Secret

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Bear season 4!Brie Larson is opening up about her cameo in The Bear season 4 and how her experience working with Marvel made the guest appearance even more rewarding. Larson served as one of The Bear season 4's biggest cameos, playing Francie Fak, a character that was often mentioned but never seen before the latest season.

Francie appeared in The Bear season 4's "Bears," finally coming face to face with her enemy, Natalie Berzatto. Though Nat has made her disdain for Francie clear in past seasons, it's still unclear why the pair had so much beef with one another.

The Bear's Fak family has been a prominent piece of the comedy-drama, leaning more into the comedy aspect of the Hulu show. Aside from Matty and Teddy Fak, John Cena had a cameo in The Bear season 3 as their brother, Sammy Fak.

Warning: contains spoilers from Season 4 of The Bear.

Last year, just ahead of The Bear’s Season Three premiere, Oliver “Cicero” Platt gave an interview to Andi Ortiz at The Wrap. On the subject of “Fishes,” the Christmas flashback episode from The Bear’s second season, Platt revealed that series creator Christopher Storer had been hearing from actors who wanted to appear on the show, but that Storer’s vision was so clear, such actors’ fame or glamor were of no consequence to him: “Like, f—ing Marlon Brando could be calling him, and if Marlon wasn’t right for whatever the role, he’d find a polite way to say, ‘I’m so flattered. I’m gonna have something else for you in the future.’”

And yet, “Fishes” is memorable, in large part, for the many distractingly well-known faces who show up to play members of the extended Berzatto family.

Brie Larson is Francie Fak

Inside, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) sees Tiffany, and she gives him permission to bail as soon as he gets uncomfortable from the anxiety of being this close to all these family and friends. It's so triggering! Honestly, I'm...

Brie Larson Joins ‘The Bear’ Season 4 Cast to Answer One of the Show’s Biggest Mysteries
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Bear” Season 4, Episodes 4 and 7.

“The Bear” welcomed an Oscar-winning performer into its cast in Season 4, solving one of the FX comedy’s longest mysteries in the process.

Episode 6 of the Jeremy Allen White-led series, the longest of Season 4 with a 69-minute runtime, follows as friends and family gather for the wedding of Tiff (Gillian Jacobs) and Frank (Josh Hartnett). Unbeknownst to the groom, the event marked a family reunion of sorts of the Berzatto family, since Tiff considers ex-husband Richie’s (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) family her own.

Among the special day’s chaotic guests was the elusive Francine Fak (Brie Larson), sister to Neil (Matty Matheson) and Teddy (Ricky Staffieri) — other sibling Sammy (John Cena) was not in attendance. ‘The Bear’ Review: Season 4 Is Another Sweet, Stirring, and Inconsistent Dish
Image
“Here’s one way to look at it: It’s really fun.”

So says a best-left-unnamed guest star in a best-left-unidentified episode of “The Bear” Season 4, by way of describing time spent with the Berzatto family. And really, our mystery speaker is right. For all the grief given to Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo’s FX restaurant drama after its down year — a succinct and undeniable description that would still spark at least two separate social media feuds — the third season was still just a bit disappointing, not an outright disaster. The second season remains a triumph, and the first season, well, without it, we wouldn’t be here, now would we?

To some sickos out there — the quoted speaker very much included — all of this, everything from fighting over how many awards “The Bear” should win to celebrating the highs and lows of each season, could be looked at as “fun.

‘The Daily Show’ Has Some Fun With Its Very Own Pedro Pascal
Image
When George Gountas, a Brooklyn dad, won a year’s worth of free burritos in a Pedro Pascal lookalike competition, few figured he’d be on The Daily Show less than 24 hours later.

However, it soon turned out that Gountas, in fact, worked at The Daily Show as a lighting designer, or as one of his colleagues called him when he went to work on Monday morning, the “new Hawk Tuah girl”.

After an emotional episode covering the latest political news and an unhinged interview with John Mulaney, Stewart featured Gountas on After The Cut, one of the Comedy Central show’s digital extensions.

Gountas revealed that it was Daily Show stage manager Tyler Goldman who first suggested that he should enter and after a little help from a stylist who lives in his building, he “rolled up and they said ‘You’re going to win’.”

“This is crazy. Woman are,...

John Mulaney Tells Jon Stewart His ‘Everybody’s Live’ Fight Was an ‘Important Lesson in Masculinity’ | Video
Image
John Mulaney‘s appearance on Monday night’s installment of “The Daily Show” was devoted almost entirely to him and Jon Stewart discussing his fight with three teenage boys on the season finale of Netflix’s “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney,” which Mulaney called “an important lesson in masculinity.”

The fight pitted Mulaney against three 14-year-old boys — or “warriors,” as Mulaney called them — named Jacob, Ben and Adarsh, and the “Everybody’s Live” host joked that the fight served a greater purpose than just its inherent entertainment value. “There’s all these podcasters now who talk about a crisis with men and boys,” Mulaney explained. “They make little video diaries in their basement and so forth.”

“But if you want to really get to the root of it: You get three of them together, get them in nice suits and helmets, and you get in a suit yourself, and you go at it,...

Despite Years to Prepare, 90 Percent of ‘SNL50’ Got Written in Final Week
Image
If only Lorne Michaels and prominent Saturday Night Live alumni could have had a little warning that they’d be doing a 50th anniversary show in 2025. Oh wait…

Michaels has been talking about preparing for the big show since at least 2021, when he told Gayle King at CBS Mornings that he planned to keep his SNL producing duties “until its 50th anniversary, which is in three years.” In other words, he was thinking about the show halfway through Season 47.

But despite years in which to get a few sketches written in advance, old procrastination habits die hard. “There was so much more lead time, but just like our regular show, I’d say 90 percent of it got written in the week leading up to it,” confessed Colin Jost to Variety. “So, it was stressful for six months for everyone.”

Jost and company had plenty of excuses, none of which stand up to scrutiny.

Watch The Hollywood Reporter’s Full, Uncensored Comedy Actor Roundtable
Image
Stick the stars of six top comedies around a table for an hour, and it becomes increasingly impossible to keep composure. At least, that was the case for The Hollywood Reporter’s latest Comedy Actor Emmy roundtable, featuring Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside), John Mulaney (Everybody’s Live), Seth Rogen (The Studio), Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Julio Torres (Fantasmas).

The rollicking conversation hit on topics as far ranging as the ways in which they’ve been typecast — the schlubby stoner type (Rogen), the confident nerd (Brody), the “soulless wooden boy who’s fast on his feet” (Mulaney) — to the “dream roles” they didn’t land. (Spoiler: Brody fought hard for Blues Clues.) They also talked in earnest about the most challenging period in their careers and swapped tales about the most baffling creative notes they’ve ever received.

At one point, the six...

Jimmy Kimmel Hopes Spreading Conspiracy Theories Leads To Emmys; Julianne Nicholson Holds A Hot Hand For Two Acting Nominations – Notes On The Season
Image
A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.

The Primetime Emmys nominating ballot is live, voting began Thursday, and all this Phase 1 voting, FYC events and furious jockeying for attention by seemingly every member of the White Lotus cast is coming to a head. Meanwhile, the official ballot brought the sad confirmation, as reported by Deadline, that there were only 13 entries in the Outstanding Talk Series, one short of a 14th nomination that would trigger four nominees, so that means there will be only three nominees this year, and thus you are only allowed to vote for three.

The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert were nominated in the category last year, as they all were the year before, with Daily Show winning both times. One of them, along with 9 other...

The 2025 Emmys Late-Night Talk Show Category Will Only Have 3 Nomination Spots This Year
Image
The 2025 Emmys are shaking things up for the late-night category, offering only three nomination slots instead of the usual five. For years, the Outstanding Talk Series category has represented at least five nominations for a plethora of late-night talk shows. However, since the number of late-night talk shows has gone down significantly over the years, the race of who should be nominated in the category is tighter than ever.

According to Deadline, there will only be three Emmy nominations for the late-night talk show category, and hosts Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Sean Evans, and John Mulaney will be fighting for the three spots. Emmy voting is just around the corner, but since only 13 shows were submitted for this year, the academy couldn't have more than three nominees, which is one less than last year and two less than the year before. This is a sign of...

Jerry Seinfeld’s Darkest Joke, According to John Mulaney
Image
Long before John Mulaney released his own confessional comedy specials, he suggested that true dark confessions can be found in seemingly innocuous punchlines. “There are things that people ignore in observational humor or just jokes that seem small,” he said on a 2018 episode of Off Camera With Sam Jones, “where you go, ‘That's that whole person right there.’”

There are jokes, Mulaney said, “that seem just like an innocuous everyday observation that are as dark about human nature as any real, ‘tear open your guts and show all the horrible sides of you’ comedy.”

Mulaney professed to love both kinds of comedy, but he clearly was more fascinated by the jokes that are less obvious about their dark underpinnings. “One thing that gets ignored sometimes is the fact that (comedians) are talking about this, or the way they talked about this mundane thing, says so much.”

As an example, Mulaney offered up Jerry Seinfeld,...

Marc Maron Explains Why He’s Shuttering ‘Wtf’ After 16 Years: ‘The World Is Ending’ | Video
Image
Marc Maron has a very Maron answer for why he’s ending his podcast “Wtf” after 16 years and over 1,600 interviews.

“Basically, me and Brendan [McDonald], my producer, were like, ‘Look. The world is ending. We might as well enjoy some free time for the few months we’re going to have,'” the comedian told Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show.”

“That’s very positive,” Fallon said, to which Maron shot back, “I like to stay positive, Jimmy.”

Earlier this month, the podcaster announced he would be ending “Wtf With Marc Maron” this fall. When Maron made the announcement during his episode with John Mulaney, the host said he and his team were “tired” of the grind the podcast required, but that they were “utterly satisfied with the work we’ve done.” Maron and McDonald launched “Wtf” in 2009 in the early days of podcasting. Olivia Munn Receives ‘Violent Threats’ Following Ms. Rachel Comments; John …
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Earlier this week, Olivia Munn made an innocuous, offhand remark about what sort of television her children watch at home.

In remarks that were surely relatable to millions of parents, Munn joked that she finds certain characters, such as Bluey and Ms. Rachel, a tad irritating.

But because this is 2025, a time when the most casual utterance can lead to absurd backlash, the actress and mother of two now finds herself on the receiving end of “violent threats.”

Late-Night Talk Emmy Category Reduced To Three Nominations
Image
The likes of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Sean Evans and John Mulaney will be battling it out for one of only three Emmy nominations.

With Emmy voting opening, it has emerged that there were only 13 submissions in the Outstanding Talk Series category, meaning that the category has lost one nomination from last year and two from the year before.

It’s a blow for the late-night community, which has been trying to find ways to fix the Emmy category with the...

Everybody's Live with John Mulaney: The Funniest Moments
Image
The genius of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney is, well, that it’s live. Filming in real time in front of the whole world means that, even though the series is based on the tried-and-true concept of the classic nighttime talk show, unexpected events instigating surprising laughs can happen at any instant — in fact, the funniest and strangest moments seem to arrive completely out of the blue. Each of the 12 episodes revolves around one specific idiosyncratic theme, from cruise ships to funeral arrangements to major surgery. Then Mulaney — the comedy genius known for specials including Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (2018) and John Mulaney: Baby J (2023) — brings in a slate of guests to chit-chat about the chosen theme, with the invite list including the likes of David Letterman, Hannibal Buress, Natasha Lyonne, Tina Fey, Sean Penn, Robby Hoffman, and Wanda Sykes. From that ingenious starting formula,...

John Mulaney Fires Back at Online Harassers After Olivia Munn’s Kerfuffle With Ms. Rachel
Image
Passionate fans of pre-school video icon Ms. Rachel are protecting their favorite YouTube songstress by making violent threats to Olivia Munn and John Mulaney.

The online harassment is in response to a recent People interview in which Munn described her distaste for a number of popular children’s shows and videos. “I know kids love (Ms. Rachel), but the thing is, if I can’t watch it, I’m not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy,” Munn complained. “These kid shows drive me crazy.”

Ms. Rachel wasn’t the only one who got a thumbs down from Munn. “Malcolm asked for Blue's Clues, and I don’t know who showed him Blue’s Clues, but they are on my shit list now. I said, ‘Hell no. Not in my house.’”
