Lilo & Stitch Remake Director Explains Why 1 Key Pleakley Detail Can't Happen In Live Action With Concept Art
Image
Lilo & Stitch director addresses one key change to live-action Pleakley's design in the upcoming remake. Played by Billy Magnussen in the upcoming movie, which will arrive in theaters on May 23, Pleakley is a self-proclaimed "Earth expert" who is sent to catch Experiment 626, aka Stitch. The character is known for its cross-dressing and using various disguises in the original film, a key feature that's missing in Lilo & Stitch's new trailer.

In response to the many questions fans have about the new movie, Dean Fleischer Camp has taken to TikTok to offer some answers. The director shared the concept art of Pleakley and explained that they have "tried." However, due to the drastic difference between mediums, they had to make changes accordingly. Check out his comment below:

I have had people messaging me, why is Pleakley not wearing the dress? And I just want to say: I tried.

If there’s one thing Harlan Coben knows how to do, it’s keep us on the edge of our seats. Thanks to his ongoing collaboration with Netflix, he’s brought his gripping novels to life, turning them into binge-worthy TV thrillers that are impossible to pause.

While many of his adaptations span different countries and languages, the British-set series have gained significant attention for their unique take on Coben's signature blend of mystery, drama, and suspense. With five British series now streaming on Netflix, fans are constantly debating which ones stand out as the most thrilling, engaging, and satisfying. So, let’s take a deep dive into all five British Harlan Coben Netflix shows and rank them from worst to best.

Indonesia’s ‘Jumbo’ Becomes Southeast Asia’s Top-Grossing Animation
Image
Exclusive: Indonesian animated feature Jumbo has become the highest-grossing Southeast Asian animation of all time.

Produced by Visinema Studios, the film has earned over $8M at the Indonesian box office since its March 31 release, surpassing the record previously held by Malaysia’s Mechamato Movie, which grossed approximately $7.68 million in 2022.

Jumbo has racked up more than 3.2 million admissions since its release, with nearly 1 million admissions recorded across the April 12 to 13 weekend.

This means that Jumbo has overtaken Hollywood title Moana 2 to become Indonesia’s second-highest-grossing animated title at the box office (Frozen 2 still remains the all-time frontrunner). Moana 2 recorded a total of 3.1 million admissions following its November 2024 release. Jumbo has surpassed that milestone in two weeks.

Jumbo follows Don, an orphan bullied as “Jumbo” due to his large body. He has a storybook, inherited from his parents, which is full of drawings and magical stories. Don later encounters Meri,...

5 worst Harlan Coben Netflix shows that just don’t deliver (and you can skip)
Image
If you're a fan of thrillers, Netflix has no shortage of options, especially with its selection of Harlan Coben adaptations. Coben, known for his suspenseful novels, has become a popular name in the streaming world with many of his books turned into Netflix shows. However, not all of them live up to the hype.

As of right now, there are 10 television series adaptations and one original series of his currently streaming on Netflix. They are Safe, Stay Close, The Innocent, The Stranger, Gone for Good, The Woods, Hold Tight, Missing You, Caught, Fool Me Once and Just One Look. While each of these series has its share of twists and surprises, not all of them succeed in maintaining your interest or keeping the momentum strong throughout. Some may leave you hooked for a few episodes, only to disappoint with predictable plotlines, pacing issues, underdeveloped characters, or unsatisfying conclusions.

We would...

Disney's Cancelled Dumbo Sequel Would Have Introduced A Mysterious Character
Image
From 1989 to 1999, the Disney Renaissance was in full swing. Beginning with "The Little Mermaid" and concluding with "Tarzan," the 10 films Walt Disney Animation Studios produced during that time marked a critically and commercially successful resurgence for the studio. The studio had previously struggled in the 18 years following Walt Disney's death in 1966, with films such as "The Black Cauldron" undergoing massive production issues and bombing at the box office. The success of the Disney Renaissance coincided with the expanding home video market, and direct-to-video sequels to some of the studios' biggest hits were produced, with "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Lion King" among them. By the 2000s, direct-to-video sequels for "Pinocchio," "Dumbo" and "The Aristocats" were also in development, but were ultimately scrapped when John Lasseter took over as Chief Creative Officer of all of Disney Animation in 2006.

In 2001, a trailer for "Dumbo II" was included in the "Dumbo...

David Schwimmer ‘Surprised’ to Hear Matthew Perry Once Praised His ‘Friends’ Comedy Skills: He ‘Was Reserved With Me. He Would Not Say That to Me’
Image
David Schwimmer appeared on the “Origins with Cush Jumbo” podcast (via People) and was surprised to hear the host talk about a conversation she once had with Matthew Perry in which the late actor praised Schwimmer’s physical comedy chops. Perry and Jumbo starred together on a season of “The Good Fight,” while Perry and Schwimmer spent 10 seasons working together on “Friends.”

Jumbo, who had long been impressed by Schwimmer’s physical comedy, was on “The Good Fight” set with Perry and asked her co-star if that style of comedy just came natural to Schwimmer.

“[Perry] talks about how it’s not out of control at all, that you’re a linchpin person in a scene and that mostly people were always looking to you to know physically what direction things should go in,” Cumbo told Schwimmer. “Without you being the pin the other things don’t work, which I thought was very,...

Friends Star David Schwimmer Turned Down One Of Will Smith's Best Movies
Image
In an alternate timeline somewhere, "Men in Black" may have led to the blockbuster leading man career of "Friends" star David Schwimmer instead of Oscar-winner Will Smith. Stories about Schwimmer's near-casting in the first "Men in Black" film have been around for years. However, during his appearance this week on the podcast "Origins With Cush Jumbo" (via The Hollywood Reporter), Schwimmer explained more fully why he ended up picking a different project over the hit sci-fi action-comedy.

"[It] was a brutal decision," the actor admitted to Jumbo, noting that a lot more went into his decision to decline the Agent J role than his tight "Friends" shooting schedule. "I had just finished filming 'The Pallbearer,' my first film with Gwyneth Paltrow, and there were high expectations of that which didn't come true," Schwimmer told the host with a laugh. "It was kind of a bomb, but there were high...

Cush Jumbo on Hosting New Podcast ‘Origins’ and Being Open to a ‘Good Wife’ Reunion With Julianna Margulies: ‘I’d Love Alicia and Lucca to Be Back Together’
Image
Cush Jumbo may be best known for her work as Lucca on “The Good Wife” and its spinoff “The Good Fight,” but now she’s branching out beyond acting.

Jumbo made her podcast hosting debut earlier this month with the launch of Sony’s “Origins with Cush Jumbo.” Each episode features Jumbo interviewing a bold-faced name about three experiences that have had a significant impact on their lives.

Her first guest was none other than Anna Wintour. Jumbo tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast, “I emailed her and said, ‘I’m doing a podcast about really inspirational people that I love who are made up of wibbly wobbly jigsaw pieces and these origin stories. I’m not doing a career trajectory podcast. I’m not doing a, how-i-got-there and how-you-can-get-there-too podcast.’ You’d be surprised what this person’s origin stories are and how looking back at them,...

Image
If there’s one horror franchise whose characters are perfectly suited for the Funko Pop! style it’s definitely Killer Klowns from Outer Space, which is probably why Funko keeps adding new characters to the mix. For her final performance, Katy took the stage with third place finisher Jack Blocker for a beautiful duet of her song "What Makes a Woman." During the performance, Katy and Jack were lifted on platforms high above the audience. As Katy rose up, her skirt was revealed...

‘Killer Klowns from Outer Space’ 4K Review – It’s Time to Upgrade This Movie One More Time
Image
Scream Factory has just released Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 4K to celebrate its 35th Anniversary, and what an exciting time to be a fan of the 1980s movie. With the recent surge of Klownapalooza happening in the past few years, including tons of merch made available by Spirit Halloween and the much-anticipated video game scheduled to be released next month, it seems apropos for the Klowns to finally make their 4K debut.

In 1988, the Chiodo Brothers took their seemingly ridiculous premise of having otherworldly monsters in the form of circus clowns land on Earth to wreak havoc on a quiet little town and produced it into a full-length motion picture. Inspired by creature features and B-movies alike, their unconventional film with a deliberately hokey title would garner an initially significant following that evolved into a major cult classic close to four decades later.

In Killer Klowns, After seeing...

‘Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game’ Preview: A Fresh Twist on the Multiplayer Horror Formula
Image
“Everyone knows who Jason is. Everyone can point out The Predator. And, of course, everyone’s familiar with the Ghostbusters!”

So says Jared Gerritzen, Chief Creative Officer at IllFonic, as we sit down for a quick interview with him on Discord. He’s certainly an authoritative voice on this matter too, given that he’s worked on adaptations for each of those cherished properties over the years, giving them all the asymmetrical multiplayer treatment that his development studio has got down to a fine art by now.

He continues: “And that means that people have pre-conceived notions of what those franchises should be. I guess what I’m saying is that they come with the burden of expectation, as you’ve got to [appease] fans of every individual movie or comic-book, regardless of their varying degrees of quality.”

Yet Gerritzen seems less wary of any such purism when it comes to IllFonic’s latest release.

Cush Jumbo Says ‘Criminal Record’ Season 2 Is Happening On Apple TV+
Image
Cush Jumbo said that a second season of Criminal Record is in the works at Apple TV+.

Jumbo was a guest on Watch What Happens Live on Sunday night when host Andy Cohen asked if she knew anything about Criminal Record Season 2.

“There will be, yeah,” Jumbo confirmed.

Although Jumbo said a second season of the series was happening, Deadline hears that Apple TV+ has not renewed the show yet.

Jumbo plays Detective Sgt. June Lenker in the British crime thriller, which she also executive produces.

Criminal Record is a series created and written by Paul Rutman that stars Jumbo and Peter Capaldi in the leading roles. The series centers around two detectives — one a young woman in the early stages of her career, the other a well-connected man determined to protect his legacy — clashing over an old murder case. Topics the show touches on include issues of race, institutional...

Review: Criminal Record is a High Stakes, Empathetic Crime Drama
Image
British television is full of crime thrillers, including fan-favorite shows Luther and Sherlock, showcasing the dark side of London and the unflappable investigators and detectives that solve a variety of gruesome murders. The latest of these is the Apple TV+ original miniseries Criminal Record, created by prolific television writer and producer Paul Rutman. Starring Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, who both also executive produce the series, Criminal Record follows two clashing police detectives who uncover new details about a presumably solved murder with the actual killer still on the loose.

Veteran London police inspector Daniel Hegarty (Capaldi) nears the end of his law enforcement career and has seen virtually everything in his many years on the force. At the opposite end of the professional spectrum, relatively new detective June Lenker (Jumbo) finds herself constantly underestimated and belittled by her peers. When the two come across new evidence regarding a young...

Criminal Record Review: Is Peter Capaldi Playing a Monster in Apple TV+ Mystery?
Image
This episodes one and two review contains plot details but is largely spoiler-free.

In eight-part crime thriller Criminal Record, Peter Capaldi’s Dci accuses Cush Jumbo’s DS of unconscious bias. Has she – a woman of colour – automatically believed a tip-off about a West African-British prisoner’s wrongful conviction because she’s primed to see racist conspiracy everywhere? Or is Jumbo’s character simply seeing racist conspiracy because she’s looking right at it?

That mystery is at the centre of this new drama from the makers of ITV’s Vera. Two episodes of writer Paul Rutman’s series are out now on Apple TV+, with the rest to follow weekly on Wednesdays until February 21. Has Jumbo’s DS Lenker stumbled on a corrupt ring of racist cops led by Capaldi’s Dci Dan Hegarty, or is she putting two and two together to make five?

Your take on the ‘Is Hegarty a baddie?...

‘Criminal Record’ Review: Lots of Polish, Little Payoff in Apple TV+’s New British Detective Drama
Image
It is certainly not the case that every lackluster show title reflects a lackluster show. For every tepid Suspicion there’s a zippy Hijack, for every drab Liaison a gorgeous Foundation — and that’s just on Apple TV+. But an uninspired name can feel, in retrospect, like an early warning sign.

So it is with the streamer’s Criminal Record, not to be confused with Criminal Minds or Criminal: UK or Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The thriller has its merits, chief among them Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as a pair of rival cops. But a tendency to prioritize themes over characters, combined with languid pacing and a too-measured tone, ultimately results in too little payoff for the time it demands.

For a while, the basic promise of a twisty murder mystery with prestige-tv gloss is enough to sustain some interest. Jumbo plays June Lenker, a midlevel detective...

Peter Capaldi on Britain’s Real-Life Institutional Disorder Behind Apple’s ‘Criminal Record’
Image
When Peter Capaldi flickers into view on the Zoom call, I half expect him to tell me to “F** Off!”

For TV viewers of a certain age, the 65-year-old Scottish actor will forever be Malcolm Tucker, the supremely sweary spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s pre-Veep Brit political satire The Thick of It.

“It’s The Thick of It and Doctor Who,” says a charming (and clean-mouthed) Capaldi, about the roles he’s most recognized for (he played the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the cult sci-fi series from 2013 to 2017). “Surprisingly, The Thick of It is still incredibly popular [the series wrapped in 2012]. People, generally very cool, smart young people, recognize me from that a lot. They generally just ask me to swear at them.”

Of course, there’s a lot more to Capaldi than Tucker and the Doctor. His scores of film and TV appearances include playing alongside Burt Lancaster in Bill Forsyth’s 1983 classic Local Hero,...

‘Criminal Record’: Peter Capaldi, Cush Jumbo & More Talk Detectives’ Battle in Search for Truth
Image
It’s detective vs. detective in Apple TV+‘s new crime thriller series. Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo are happy to be working together again — they previously starred in Torchwood in 2009 — in Criminal Record, premiering January 10. “It was so funny because when I remember Cush from Torchwood, she was just this kind of bright light, this kind of youthful teen,” he tells TV Insider. “I wasn’t a teen, but I was pretty young,” she interjects. “I was just terrified. That’s why I was bright. My poor eyeballs were so wide. Which direction should I be walking in?” The two have worked together and seen each other since, and Capaldi makes sure to praise Jumbo’s work as both a playwright and performer, including in Josephine and I, a play about Josephine Baker. But they’d been trying “to find the right thing,” which this is, she shares. “I...
