With Season 3 of “And Just Like That…” about to premiere on Thursday, Sarah Jessica Parker is finally revealing how she felt about the show killing off Mr. Big, her main love interest, in the show’s Season 1 premiere.
Parker has played Carrie Bradshaw since 1998 on “Sex on the City” and has reprised the role through two blockbuster movies and now the reboot “And Just Like That…” which premiered back in 2021. Over the course of the original show, Carrie’s central, and often most tumultuous love interest was always Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth. The pair finally got married in the 2008 movie “Sex and the City.” But audiences have been split about the formative relationship, with many fans saying she should have ended up with Aiden Shaw (John Corbett.)
Both sides of the fandom were left shocked when in the very first episode of “And Just Like That…” the show decided to kill off Mr.

There are some team-ups that you just don’t expect. One of those is coming to Peacock, as The Miniature Wife finds its lead cast. This comedy series sounds like a blast.
There is little known about the series and the characters just yet. However, with the casting alone, this is sure to be a series to watch out for. Plus, Peacock does well with these types of comedy shows, offering something light in the midst of all the darker television that is out there.

Alex Ross Perry is chasing “Pavements” — that is, the fictionalized version of the band that his very real faux music documentary is about.
The “Her Smell” director helms the movie within a movie about Pavement, the ’90s American alternative group. The official synopsis reads: “‘Pavements’ is a movie about Pavement the band — among other things. The latest film from acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry is a documentary that may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, and may or may not be more about the idea of the band — or any band — than a history of the short-lived, passionately loved, commercially marginal ’90s American alternative group Pavement. This unconventional film about a highly unconventional band incorporates a stage musical, rock biopic, gallery exhibition, archival footage, and contemporary observational footage to create a film as irreducible, uncharacterizable, and entertaining as the band and its music.

"We were big on MTV!" Utopia has revealed an official trailer for the film Pavements, the latest creation from NYC indie filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. This is sort of a documentary, or not, more of a mockumentary, but it's also kind of real, and kind of a fictional film. Does this band actually exist? Is this doc about their return or about them not being a real band? Who knows? Pavements is a doc film about the American indie band Pavement, which combines scripts with images of the band & a musical mise-en-scene composed of songs from their discography. It's a prismatic, narrative, scripted, musical, metatextual hybrid. Showing the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum about their history, and a big-budget Hollywood biopic. Anchored by Pavement's slacker-sage-sphinx, Stephen Malkmus, the film features actors Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman,...

Pavements, Alex Ross Perry’s experimental biopic-documentary on the band Pavement, has received its first official trailer.
Arriving in theaters around the US on June 6th, Pavements combines elements of the traditional musical biopic with that of a rock documentary. The film captures all five members of Pavement in 2022 as they launched their reunion tour, their own museum, and a musical based on their catalogue. All the while, Joe Keery stars as frontman Stephen Malkmus in a fictitious documenting of the band’s history, alongside fellow actor/musician performers Jason Schwartzman, Nat Wolff, Tim Heidecker, Zoe Lister-Jones, and more.
This biopic-style presentation of the band’s origins story was captured as Range Life: A Pavement Story, which is both its own separate companion movie as well as the “film within a film” portion of Pavements. Range Life received its first trailer earlier this month, though it does not have a...

Six years since his last solo directing feature, Her Smell, Alex Ross Perry returned to the world of rock in a very different way with Pavements. A tribute to Stephen Malkmus’ group, the film jumps between band documentary, biopic (and the making of the biopic), Broadway-musical creation, museum exhibition, and more to try containing the genius of this influential group. After its fall festival premiere, Utopia will give it a release this year, beginning on May 2, and they’ve now released the first trailer after we got a fun teaser at the film within the film. Along with Pavement members, the film also features Joe Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, Nat Wolff, and more.

This article contains a brief mention of abuse.
From action films like Pacific Rim Uprising to subtle dramas like Priscilla, Cailee Spaeny continues to experiment with a variety of challenging roles. In her latest movie,Alien: Romulus, the actress has showcased her potential to lead an iconic franchise. One of the most engaging aspects of Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus is the young cast. It evolves the franchise for modern viewers while showing nostalgics that different narratives can be told. In this case, it's a group of young scavengers who run into Xenomorphs rather than seasoned soldiers and experienced scientists.
This approach speaks to the wonder and inquisitive nature of youth. At the core of Romulus is Cailee Spaeny's Rain, who just wants a fresh start. As expected, Spaeny delivers range and impressive nods to Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley. She's certainly a character that sequels can be built around.

Timothée Chalamet may be earning rave reviews for his guitar-playing and singing as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” but the Oscar nominee insists he’s not itching to release an album of his own. “Never,” he told me, laughing, at the film’s premiere Tuesday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Chalamet credited co-star Edward Norton for pushing him to sing live during filming. “He was always the devil in my ear telling me to do these songs live,” he said. “We had these pre-records, but Edward was always sort of the counterweight to the 99 other voices that were saying not to.”
Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez, recalled singing for the first time with Chalamet during rehearsals. “It was also the first time we met,” she said. “I had sung along with his recordings in the studio, but being in real time, in real life...

The world of music documentaries is a complex one.
There are plenty of films covering the biggest artists in the world from Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, Hulu’s Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and Martin Scorsese-produced Beatles ’64.
But under the surface, music like alternative music scenes themselves, there’s a phalanx of weird and interesting films about lesser known artists, where the story is often as strange and endearing as the artists. These often become the films that have longevity, from The Decline of Western Civilization to Dig!
This is where the Sound Unseen Film Festival comes in. Since the premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” at the Venice Film Festival in September, there has been an intense response from fans and media alike surrounding the revealing love scenes between star Daniel Craig and his on-screen paramour Drew Starkey.
When asked about the reactions to the on-screen sex at the Los Angeles premiere of “Queer” Wednesday night, Craig stated in a very matter-of-fact tone, “It’s pretty prudish to me.”
“Queer,” based on the 1985 novella by famed American beatnik William S. Burroughs, follows William Lee (Craig), a disillusioned American veteran who spends his days drinking and dopping in 1950s Mexico after fleeing a drug charge in his home country. His life suddenly finds purpose after meeting Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a younger American expat who shows Lee the flashes of love he’s desired for so long.

Alex Ross Perry was approached to make a documentary about Pavement. There was a slight hitch: The band kinda sorta did not want a documentary made about them. Or rather, they didn’t want one of those things where fans of the band talk about how amazing the quintet were, in between archival concert footage and Behind the Music-style interviews and cute animated transitions and all that jazz. The group had announced their first show in a decade, set to happen in 2020 — only to have the pandemic shut the world down.

Utopia has picked up the U.S. rights to Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry’s musical portrait of the 1990s al-rock band a day after a world premiere in Venice earlier this week.
“One of our favorite filmmakers, one of our favorite bands, Pavements joining Utopia is simply a dream come true. The band’s iconic status has only continued to blossom out of the ’90s and Alex has crafted a film that transcends documentary and questions what the format can be in a surprising and novel way,” Utopia head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said in a statement on Friday.
Pavements will also have a North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The musical biopic tracks the influential rock band as they prepare for a 2022 reunion tour in the prism of their earlier accomplishments.
“This multifaceted meta-movie is at once documentary, musical comedy, faux biopic and real museum exhibition.

Utopia has acquired U.S. rights to acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry’s “Pavements,” the day after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The film debuted to strong reviews, with Variety saying “’Pavements’ dazzles as a spinning plates act,” and Screen describing it as “a joyous, slyly subversive celebration.”
A boundary-breaking look at the seminal band Pavement, the film is edited and produced by filmmaker Robert Greene and will have its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival later this fall.
An examination of the iconic 90s indie band, “Pavements” appears to be just another music documentary, until it doesn’t. A “prismatic, narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, metatextual hybrid,” the film intimately shows the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history and a big-budget Hollywood biopic inspired by...

In Alex Ross Perry’s exuberant tribute to Pavement, Tim Heidecker gives a succinct descriptor of what made the band a staple of college radio stations in the ‘90s: “For kids who thought everything was stupid and everything sucked, they were your band.” In an era when rock stars gave up hours doing big hair in the makeup chair to instead wear the flannel they walked in off the street with, the band, fronted by Stephen Malkmus, cultivated a fan base that cared quite a bit when they looked like they didn’t care much at all, standing out in the grunge period for their ironic detachment and a general lack of pretense that belied the sophistication of their songcraft.
While passion didn’t necessarily appear to be part of Pavement’s persona, Perry feels obliged to overcompensate, declaring them to be “the world’s most important and influential band...

Wayne’s World is a film that needs no introduction, but will get one anyways. As the maiden voyage for Paramount’s 30-year relationship with Lorne Michaels, we witnessed a beloved yet unidimensional Saturday Night Live sketch adapt into one of the highest grossing films of its decade and solidify it’s legacy as a cultural and comedic juggernaut. Multiple generations have laughed, cried, and hurled, time and time again, for over three decades. But after three decades of anything, change can be scary. That is, unless you have Zoe Lister-Jones and Film Independent sitting in the driver’s seat of that sky blue AMC Pacer with flames on the side. Then it’s not scary at all. It’s party time. It’s excellent.

Zoe Lister-Jones takes us on an imaginative journey through parallel worlds in her new series Slip. The show follows Mae, an art curator feeling trapped in a lackluster marriage. That is, until an intimate encounter leaves her waking up to discover her life utterly transformed.
From there, each new intimacy transports Mae to an alternative reality. We meet her as different versions of herself—a famous musician’s wife, a devoted mother, and more. Yet one constant remains: her friendship with Gina. Through it all, Gina stands by her side, even if unaware of Mae’s strange experiences.
What starts as a comedic premise becomes a deeper exploration. In each world, Mae forms new relationships that feel richly real. We see all the complexity of living as another self—new loves and challenges that sometimes mirror her old life’s issues. Most intriguing is Lister-Jones’ focus on the messy realities,...

The past couple of years have been a very good time to be a Pavement fan. The Nineties indie rock band emerged from 12 years of hibernation in 2022 for a stellar, worldwide reunion tour that continues to this day. During their downtime, they assembled a fantastically bizarre jukebox musical based on songs from their catalog, and they promoted it with a trippy pop-up Pavement museum.
As plugged-in Pavement fans knew, all of this activity was captured by filmmaker Alex Ross Perry for a movie, Pavements. It’s premiering at the Venice Film Festival,...

The MaXXXine world premiere in Hollywood featured A-list stars, epic red carpet moments, and a meta celebration of fame and celebrity. Director Ti West emphasized the importance of experiencing the film in a theater setting during the jam-packed screening at the TLC Chinese Theatre. MaXXXine, the third part of a horror trilogy with Mia Goth, intertwines fame, secrets, and a deadly game of survival against a backdrop of Hollywood's dark past. It hits theaters Fourth of July weekend.
MovieWeb just attended the June 24 world premiere of MaXXXine world premiere in Hollywood, where director Ti West, star Mia Goth, and plenty of other A-listers were in attendance. Breaking Bad alum Giancarlo Esposito put on a clinic on the red carpet, where protesters were also seen waving disparaging signs about the dangers of Hollywood. After a closer glance, however, it became clear these demonstrators were just one of many aspects that the premiere had gleefully organized.

Keep your big-budget extravaganzas and intellectual properties! These days, Hollywood actors are breathlessly lining up to join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe. Ever since Rian Johnson singled-handedly revived the big screen whodunnit with 2019's "Knives Out," the mid-budget murder-mystery series has become the hottest destination for rising stars, A-listers, and under-sung veterans of the industry to flex their acting muscles as the various colorful characters that occupy this world. Even the property's shift from the theatrical market to the streaming landscape three years later with Netflix's "Glass Onion" wasn't enough to deter folks from flocking to these movies like they're the next "Dune" sequel.
Following the announcement of Johnson's third "Knives Out Mystery" last month (now officially titled "Wake Up Dead Man"), it's become a daily guessing game trying to figure out who will sign on to match wits with Daniel Craig's sharp-witted Southern sleuth Blanc next.

The announcement comes after her divorce from artist and filmmaker Daryl Wein, who she was married to from 2013 to 2022.
Her Slip series was nominated for an award at the Spirit Awards, and she spoke about the show’s gender-neutral acting categories.
“I’m so grateful to Film Independent for really being pioneers in that area. All award shows should follow in their footsteps and make categories genderless,” adding, “I’m dating a nonbinary person.”

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ali Wong won the award for best performance in a new scripted series at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for her role in Netflix’s Beef, which also won the prize for best new scripted series.
While accepting her first-ever Spirit Award, Wong thanked her co-star Steven Yeun, who was also nominated in the gender-neutral category, as well as the series’ creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producer Jake Schreier. “I wouldn’t be here without you. This is the best. It’s been such a wonderful journey with you guys, and I’m so proud that you guys are my friends, too,” she said.
The comedian also took her speech as an opportunity to give a “special shout-out” to the show’s catering company, Mario’s, playfully noting that her colleagues will “be so mad at me for letting out the secret that they’re, like, the best, but…...
