Frightfest 2012 Review: Paura 3D
Paura 3D

Stars: Peppe Servillo, Francesca Cuttica, Lorenzo Pedrotti, Domenico Diele, Claudio Di Biagio | Written by Antonio Manetti, Marco Manetti | Directed by The Manetti Brothers

The second film from the Manetti Brothers’ whose The Arrival of Wang played Frightfest Glasgow and is scheduled as part of the Re-Discovery Screen at London Frightfest 2012, Paura 3D (literally translated as Fear 3D) is billed as a 3D thrill ride into terror and whilst the film has its moments (no matter how minor), it cannot compare to the sheer brilliance of the Manetti’s sci-fi opus Wang.

Paura 3D tells the story of mechanic Ale, who after overhearing a conversation between a wealthy customer and the garage owner, takes his best friends, Simone and Marco on a trip to the wealthy owners Rome villa intent on having a wild weekend in his luxury mansion. The Arrival of Wang is Here
“The Arrival of Wang” is a sci-fi movie from the Mannetti brothers that’s scheduled to play Frightfest in London on Saturday 25th. (Forget about tickets. It’s sold out.) I guess you could go into this not knowing that it’s an alien movie, but one glance at the poster will pretty much ruin that. Or heck, the teaser trailer. The synopsis below certainly does a fine job of hiding it, though I’m not sure what the point is. When Chinese-language interpreter Gaia (Francesca Cuttica) is offered a job that pays a fortune, she can’t believe her luck. This time, however, is going to be a little different. After being escorted to a secret location in Rome, she is locked inside a pitch-black room where she is asked to interpret the harsh interrogation of the eponymous ‘Wang’. Special make-up prosthetics and splatter genius Paul Hyett makes his directorial debut with a harrowing exploration into tense claustrophobia, hard-hitting action and rollercoaster suspense. In a Balkan brothel, where girls kidnapped by soldiers in war-torn zones are prostituted to the military and civilians alike, Angel (Robin Day) is the deaf mute orphan enslaved to care for the inmates. But unbeknownst to her captors, she moves between the walls and crawlspaces of the seasoning house planning her escape. Psychological horror in the nerve-shredding Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski style but with an ultra-modern twist.
