The latest in our series of writers on their go-to comfort watches is Nicolas Cage’s foodie revenge drama
Guardian writers on their ultimate feelgood move
Michael Sarnoski’s Pig is not an obvious feelgood movie. Its hero is a bedraggled hermit named Robin (Nicolas Cage) who lives in the woods with his pet pig. Robin is kind of a tough hang – a sullen misanthrope who just barely tolerates the occasional presence of Amir (Alex Wolff), the young businessman who buys truffles from him. We don’t know who Robin was before, but it’s clear that life has taken a lot from him already. And then someone steals his damn pig.
He sets off to rescue her and soon finds himself drawn into the grubby underbelly of Portland’s culinary scene, where chefs and waiters take part in bare-knuckled fights. We learn that Robin himself was once an esteemed chef and,...

It’s been a quiet year thus far for M. Night Shyamalan after closing out 2024 with Trap, the psychological thriller led by Josh Hartnett. However, one of Shyamalan’s projects that will celebrate its 10th anniversary soon has returned to streaming charts. James McAvoy stars alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in Split, the psychological thriller following three girls who are kidnapped by a man with 23 personalities. They must work together to escape before the dangerous 24th personality rears its ugly head. Split is streaming on HBO Max in the United States, but globally, it’s one of the most popular VOD purchases in countries like Honduras. The film earned a “Certified Fresh” 79% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 79% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It also grossed an incredible $278 million globally against a $9 million budget, making it one of the biggest financial hits of all time.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia wouldn’t be what it is without Frank. So what happens without him?
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 2 asks the question of what might happen if this beloved character were to die.
For an episode that covers the heavy topic of someone you love dying, it’s as lighthearted as the Fxx hit can make it.
(Patrick McElhenney/FX)
At a high level, this episode features a Dee solo storyline and a subplot involving Mac, Dennis, and Charlie getting back on their trio shenanigans. As suggested by the title, Frank’s presence in this episode is limited to his limp body in a coma.
I actually quite enjoyed this episode. Even though I was initially skeptical of the season after the premiere, this episode reinstated my faith in Season 17.

While July might drum up images of hot dogs, cookouts, beach trips, and heat waves, the month also marks a halfway point that fans of a certain holiday will surely be celebrating. On the 25th, many networks like the Hallmark Channel pop off with festivities reveling in the time-honored tradition of Christmas in July. This year, Netflix is getting in on the action, but in the scariest way possible. While Hallmark will be bringing audiences tales of love and merriment, Netflix is set to add one of the best holiday horror hits to its lengthy lineup of content. Beginning on July 16, audiences can tune in to see what happens to those who end up on the naughty list when the Adam Scott (Severance) and Toni Collette(Hereditary)-led Krampus terrorizes subscribers.

Nat Wolff and Billie Eilish are the alleged hot new item.
For years, Eilish has delighted the world with sensual music and charged lyrics.

Billie Eilish has never been one to follow the script, and has always worn her quirkiness like a badge of honour. Her haunting lyrics, whispery vocals, and oversized fits are just a part of what makes her such an adored pop culture figure.
The Gen Z icon has also racked up nine Grammys, landed an Oscar, and headlined Coachella. But if there’s one thing that she hates, it’s the spotlight on her personal life and her s*xuality. However, now that rumors of her new romance are swirling online, the singer is once again at the center of the press’ attention.

June! It’s always such a refreshing chunk of Gregorian real estate, the promise of summer looming in its most ideal form, not yet curdled into the desultory, bedraggled blast-furnace blood factories of late August and September. It’s also when cinema begins to stretch her legs again after an invariably prolonged awards season hangover. And yes, this means a lot of sweaty studio would-be blockbusters. But it also means Don’t-Miss Indies. So! Seek out your local art house and keep those summertime blues at bay.

Nicolas Cage has been acting since the early '80s, and is one of the most versatile and famous actors of his generation. Although the actor has had a series of remarkable films, it wasn't until 2021 that he made the film he's most proud of.
That year, Cage starred in several films, including the fantasy horror Prisoners of Ghostland, the dark comedy horror Willy's Wonderland, and Pig. The latter, a mystery drama, has turned into Cage's favorite film that he has ever made. Pig was a hit with the critics, and the movie is finding new success on Netflix, per FlixPatrol.
The film just hit Netflix U.S. on May 26, and one day later, it was already in the charts. The movie is only available domestically on the streaming platform and debuted in fourth place.

With Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier set to direct Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, the rumour mill continues churning out possible names for the highly anticipated movie.
We're not putting too much stock into any of these casting claims, but following this past week's Professor X and Jean Grey rumours, there's a possible update on the McU's Magneto.
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing three-time Oscar winner Sir Daniel Day-Lewis for the role of the Master of Magnetism. Would he ever really consider a superhero movie role? We wouldn't bank on it, though the same might have once been said for Sir Ian McKellen.
It's worth noting that this comes after the insider said, "No new [X-Men] cast will be introduced in the upcoming Avengers films, because the focus is on giving closure to the original characters. Casting hasn’t started yet because director Jake Schreier hasn’t officially signed on.

Acclaimed actor Alex Wolff has worked with some of the biggest directors working today, from Ari Aster (Hereditary) to Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer). And after directing his own feature, The Cat and the Moon (2019), Wolff has another project he's helming in the works. It's called If She Burns and features rising stars like Justice Smith (I Saw the TV Glow). MovieWeb recently caught up with Wolff while he was promoting his new comedy Magic Farm, directed by Amalia Ulman (El Planeta) and also starring the great Chloë Sevigny. Wolff took time to talk about his upcoming project and how it's connected to his latest film release.
"Doing Magic Farm definitely helped me in terms of seeing the way that Amalia — whatever she was married to, in terms of her style of shooting or shots for scenes, and she was also so devoted to capturing the culture," Wolff told MovieWeb. "I learned so much from Amalia's freedom.

Chloë Sevigny has been a truly significant figure in American cinema throughout the past few decades. She burst through the gates, making her mark on numerous masterpieces, all within five years of each other — The Last Days of Disco, Boys Don't Cry, Julien Donkey-Boy, American Psycho, Demonlover, Party Monster, and Dogville. Maybe you enjoyed her chemistry opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Zodiac (2007), or perhaps you liked seeing her deal with crazy boss Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000). Whatever the role, Sevignybrings a signature commitment to every role in the vast array of commercial and indie projects she's graced, including her latest Mubi feature that's now playing in select theaters.
Magic Farm sees her as the leader of a bumbling film crew that tries and virtually fails to make TV gold in a small Argentine town. Sevigny's co-stars include Alex Wolff (Oppenheimer), Joe Apollonio (Hacks) and Amalia Ulman (El Planeta) — who also wrote and directed Magic Farm.

When Joe Apollonio, the 33-year-old New York internet comic with a wild coif of reddish hair, names River Phoenix as one of his favorite actors, it all makes sense. They have a similar countercultural vibe — not to mention fashionably unkempt hairstyle — and a hunger to take on roles that scare them, and often put their own autobiography front and center.
“I get shit sometimes from my friends for not watching certain movies,” Apollonio told IndieWire at a brewery in Bryant Park (though Apollonio is five years sober). “I would say that I’m a huge fan of River Phoenix’s work and Gus Van Sant’s work. And then also movies that Michael Pitt’s been in the 2000s, like ‘The Dreamers.’ I would say those are the two actors that I look up to the most. Interestingly enough, they’re not comedians.”

Days after A24 released the first image from Ari Aster’s Eddington, the film got another exciting look. The first trailer for Eddington has officially been released, and it will serve as the follow-up to Beau Is Afraid, the 2023 mind-twisting psychological thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Ryan. Aster will reunite with Phoenix for Eddington, which also stars Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal and two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone. The film is a contemporary Western following a standoff between a small-town sheriff and a mayor that sparks a powder keg of a matchup in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico. The trailer is set almost entirely on social media, with characters from the film providing their input on socioeconomic issues like the Covid-19 pandemic. Eddington will also star Austin Butler, who recently featured in Dune: Part Two, and Luke Grimes, the Yellowstone veteran who is also known for his work on Fifty Shades of Grey.

One of the most devastating horror films of the past 10 years is leaving Netflix later this month. The flick in question is Ari Aster’s Hereditary. If you’re a masochist with a couple of hours to kill, you still have time to pay the picture a repeat visit. Keep reading for the full rundown.
I’m glad I own Hereditary on disc and don’t have to rely on streaming availability because I really have to be in the right headspace to watch it. I have a complicated relationship with the film. I love the set design, the ambiance, the stellar performances, and the cult element. However, the depiction of trauma is so painstakingly realistic that...

We knew the day was coming, but we didn't expect it to arrive so quickly. One of the only two A24 horror films currently streaming on Netflix will be leaving the platform very soon. How soon? We're talking next week. After being added in January 2025, it's already time to say goodbye to this horror masterpiece that had everyone talking back when it first hit theaters in 2018. It's the psychological horror Hereditary, and it's set to depart Netflix on Tuesday, April 15.
Since this film isn't a Netflix original but rather a licensed title, we always knew it would eventually be removed. However, we expected it to stay on the platform for at least six months before leaving. It turns out Netflix only secured the streaming rights for a three-month period. With the removal date fast approaching, it's crucial to watch it before it's gone. There’s no guarantee it will return,...

Hollywood fan-favorite Jack Black gives fans a major "spoiler alert" regarding the future of the Jumanjifranchise.
During an April 1 appearance on Today, Black was asked if he could confirm development on any sequel projects to his previous films. Black noted that it is unlikely School of Rock will be getting a follow-up film any time soon, though he promised that a fourth Jumanji film is "in the works." Black added that there was a "high" probability of a fourth Jumanji entering production, stating simply, "Spoiler alert, I'm in it!"
The Jumanji franchise kicked off with the 1995 film based on Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 children's picture book of the same name. Jumanji starred Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce as Judy and Peter Shepherd, two kid siblings who unleash the fantastical, terrifying jungle world held within the film's eponymous board game. "I don't want to exploit some person because they're weird." Mubi has unveiled an official trailer for the indie film titled Magic Farm, the second feature from Spanish-Argentinian filmmaker Amalia Ulman. This premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and played at Berlinale, out in theaters later in April before it's streaming on Mubi. In the film, an American film crew working for an edgy media company travels to Argentina to cover a musician who has the potential to go viral. As they collaborate with locals to create a viral trend, relationships form amid an unfolding health crisis which they continue to ignore. The cast features Chloë Sevigny, Alex Wolff, Simon Rex, Joe Apollonio, Camila del Campo. Dumb podcasters go on a trip to the wrong place - The Movie.

Expanding her scope (and color palette) after her dryly hilarious debut El Planeta, Amalia Ulman is back with Magic Farm. Starring Chloë Sevigny, Simon Rex, Alex Wolff, and Joe Apollonio, the Sundance premiere follows a film crew who travels to Argentina to profile a local musician, but their ineptitude leads them into the wrong country. As they collaborate with locals to create a viral trend, relationships form amid an unfolding health crisis. With the film picked up by Mubi for a theatrical release on April 25, its first trailer has arrived.
Kent M. Wllhelm said in his review, “I was sold on the premise of satirizing opportunistic content creators who play dress-up as journalists, but weaving that into the storylines of the ensemble cast is no easy task for a sophomore feature. The plot gets lost; when it feels like there’s too much going on, nothing gets to shine. There...

Chloë Sevigny is a chameleon onscreen, and her latest turn in satire “Magic Farm” is no exception. In the film, the actress stars as a Vice News-esque documentarian who leads a film crew traveling to Argentina to expose the effects of pesticides on people. “Magic Farm” is written and directed by Amalia Ulman, with Alex Wolff, Joe Apollonio, Camila del Campo, and Simon Rex co-starring.
The official synopsis reads: “Fake it ‘til you make it. When a misguided American documentary crew in search of their next viral segment ends up in the wrong town in rural Argentina, chaos ensues. As they collaborate with locals to fake a new music trend, unexpected relationships form and an unfolding health crisis becomes apparent.”
The feature had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year and also played at the 2025 Berlinale. “Magic Farm” will be among the previews for Mubi Fest, too.

Bring Them Down (Christopher Andrews)
Christopher Andrews’ Bring Them Down is an endurance test with no payoff. Opening with a jarring car crash on a windy road in rural Ireland, the film soon adds scenes of gruesome animal cruelty, an ear literally being blown off someone’s head, and then further sequences of gruesome animal cruelty. The Wolfs actor Zach Cregger’s is in early talks to star reboot of the Constantin-Sony feature take of the Capcom videogame, Resident Evil.
The WME-repped Abrams is also known for playing Ethan Lewis on HBO’s Euphoria. Sony had no comment.
The latest iteration of Resident Evil, which pays homage to the original horror videogame’s roots, is ramping up for a Sept. 18, 2026 theatrical release. Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten.
The remake of Cregger’s Resident Evil went out to the town, and had Warner Bros interested at one point, however, Sony made sure the $1.2 billion grossing franchise stayed at the Culver City lot.
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Don't kill me, but Mickey 17reminds me of Old. You know, the M. Night Shyamalan movie about the beach that makes you old? How could this be?Mickey 17 is, like, a real movie! It follows a man named Mickey who decides to become an "Expendable," a functional human guinea pig who is (rather painfully) killed and reprinted repeatedly for the sake of medical research trials. Like many of director Bong Joon-Ho's films, Mickey 17 serves as a biting social commentary on the modern workforce and colonialism.
Meanwhile, Shyamalan is a director whose movies are similarly known for their social reflexivity, if not in a less serious fashion. Shyamalan's topical observations usually come in the form of twists, such as in his (infamously) popular modern classic, Old. In fact, there are quite a few thematic similarities between Mickey 17 and Old, despite one being one of the highest-anticipated movies...

You should always take a movie’s claims of being “based on a true story” with a grain of salt. Sure, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is technically inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein and the Conjuring franchise more or less follows the Warrens’ case notes, but the fact is that most horror flicks are more interested in providing audiences with a good scare than informing the public about real events.
Of course, that’s not always the case. Over the years, several genre filmmakers have tried their hand at adapting horrific True Crime stories to the big screen without messing too much with the facts. And in honor of these intrepid storytellers, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six True Crime horror movies.

Cumbia music is the one grounding constant in Argentine-born Spanish filmmaker Amalia Ulman’s sophomore effort “Magic Farm,” a formally radical, biting satire about odious, privileged Americans adrift in a remote Argentine rural town. The group of foreigners works for a Vice-type media company dedicated to exploiting offbeat stories from around the world for sensationalist video content. The latest target for their culture-mining operation is Super Carlitos, a whimsical singer known for wearing bunny ears, residing in the town of San Cristobal. Unbeknown to useless producer Jeff (Alex Wolff of “Hereditary” fame), a place with that name could be anywhere in Latin America.
With the same uncomfortably dry sense of humor she exhibited in her debut feature “El Planeta” — where she and her real mother played a financially strapped mother-daughter duo — Ulman casts herself as Elena, the cameraperson and interpreter. There’s an inevitably metatextual quality to her character, since...

Alex Wolff is praising his “Magic Farm” co-star Chloë Sevigny for setting the tone for the satirical feature.
Wolff, who stars alongside Sevigny, Simon Rex, Camila del Campo, and Joe Apollonio in the film, said during the IndieWire Studio at Sundance, presented by Dropbox, that Sevigny is one of his acting inspirations. Thus, he understandably was “nervous” to act opposite her on the indie.
“Magic Farm” centers on a Vice News-esque documentary film crew led by Sevigny’s character. The crew travels to Argentina to expose the effects of pesticides on people; Amalia Ulman wrote and directed the film.
When asked by IndieWire’s editorial director Kate Erbland how the two onscreen generations, represented by Sevigny and Rex’s respective characters and del Campo and Wolff’s roles, impacted the making of the film, Wolff credited Sevigny’s three decades in Hollywood as key to making “Magic Farm” work.

Amalia Ulman’s sophomore feature bridged her Argentinian family’s story of unrest with an “unserious” American crew that finds themselves stuck in the middle.
The “El Planeta” director wanted to tell the story of her family, who had been affected by the springs in northern Argentina, for years and finally found that her film “Magic Farm,” which debuted at Sundance Film Festival last weekend, was the right avenue to tell it.
“It was in the back of my mind for a few years until I came up with a story and the way to bridge and create the story was through this crew–this very unserious crew that comes from New York that are all dealing with their own problems,” the writer-director told TheWrap at our Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt. “The real story is happening, but they’re trying to fake some stupid, clickbaity trend.”

It’s always fun to watch comedic actors dip their toes into drama and absolutely knock it out of the park. Take Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, for instance, or Kristen Wiig in The Skeleton Twins. On the flip side, it’s also a joy to watch actors who are mostly known for their more serious projects get to flex their comedy muscles. Magic Farm allows Chloë Sevigny and Alex Wolff to do just that, and they consistently deliver even when the movie meanders.

New York-based writer-director Amalia Ulman returns to her Argentine roots for her second feature, and as in the Spain-set El Planeta, she’s keenly interested in the boundless human capacity for living in a state of denial. Revolving around a group of supposed journalists — well, content creators — who spend the entire movie missing a huge story right under their noses, Magic Farm features a stupendous cast fully in sync with Ulman’s deadpan absurdity. The actors effortlessly entwine the droll and the ingenuous, but as Ulman juggles more characters and more plot angles than in her first movie, there isn’t necessarily more payoff.

Every January, the Sundance Film Festival transforms Park City into a hub for independent cinema, and 2025 is no exception. This year, the festival showcases 87 feature films, six episodic projects, and a robust collection of shorts, offering a mix of fresh voices and seasoned creators. With so much to explore, navigating the lineup can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to spotlight the most anticipated titles, some already previewed and others primed for discovery.
While Sundance remains rooted in Park City, speculation grows about a potential move in 2027 to cities like Salt Lake City, Cincinnati, or Boulder. For now, Eugene Hernandez, Sundance’s director, and lead programmer Kim Yutani have highlighted buzzworthy films and sales titles destined to make waves. Competition entries will also be available online during the festival’s second week, expanding access beyond Utah.
The 2025 slate has something for everyone: gripping narratives, thought-provoking documentaries, and compelling episodic premieres.

Every once in a while, a horror title manages to grip the collective imagination or unsettle streaming audiences, like the Taiwanese thriller "Incantation," which takes the curse-contagion metaphor to a whole new level. A quick look at Netflix's current ranking of movies trending in the U.S. has pinned Ari Aster's "Hereditary" at #7, as the critically acclaimed A24 horror is getting a second life on the streaming platform (via FlixPatrol).
