Image
Sarah McLachlan’s late ’90s all-female touring festival Lilith Fair is the subject of a new feature-length documentary set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on Sunday, September 21st.

Titled Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, the authorized film is inspired by the 2019 Vanity Fair article Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair, written by Jessica Hopper with former Consequence editor Sasha Geffen and Jenn Pelly. The film is directed by Ally Pankiw and pulls from more than 600 hours of archival footage, interviews, and stories from fans, festival organizers, and artists who played Lilith Fair.

The documentary includes interviews with McLachlan herself, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile, Natalie Merchant, Mýa, Jewel, the Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, and Olivia Rodrigo. ‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Soundtrack: From Griff To Sabrina Carpenter
Image
With its first season Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers made a name for itself with its focus on all women musicians featured in the show’s soundtrack, with needle drops like Taylor Swift’s “Nothing New,” Japanese Breakfast’s “Be Sweet,” Brandi Carlile’s “Broken Horses” and Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl” featured in the first season, to name a few. Swift’s “Nothing New” was used in the scene where Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth) and her friends made their society debut, similar to the procession of Netflix’s Bridgerton in white dresses and feathers.

Later on in the first season, songs like “Kissing Lessons” by Lucy Dacus, “Cedar” by Gracie Abrams,” “Bite the Hand” by boygenius, “Want Want” by Maggie Rogers” and another Taylor Swift anthem, “Long Live” highlighted the high stakes of Nan’s decisions. Season 2 continues in the vein of mostly women artsits featured on the soundtrack.

The Sabrina Carpenter You Don’t Know
Image
Sabrina Carpenter is as good as any current pop star at cultivating controversy and attention — the latest evidence was the now-subsided furor over her absurd Man’s Best Friend album cover, which seems to take cues from Spinal Tap’s Smell the Glove. “She’s leaning into it and laughing about it at the same time,” says Angie Martoccio, who profiled Carpenter for her recent Rolling Stone cover story — which revealed that image aside, the singer’s true obsession is music.

“I wasn’t aware that she was a full-on music nerd,...

Why Did Bruce Springsteen Hide So Many Albums in His Vault?
Image
What if Bruce Springsteen had followed up his synth-and-drum-machine-driven 1994 hit “Streets of Philadelphia” with a whole album largely in that vein? What if he’d dropped an album of Great American Songbook-style ballads instead of 2017’s Western Stars? Springsteen’s just-released boxed set Tracks II: The Lost Albums is packed with seven albums’ worth of alternate realities and musical surprises, offering a reminder of just how much he’s capable of outside of his stadium-shaking work with the E Street Band.

How Sly Stone and Brian Wilson Changed Music

There was an odd symmetry to the near-simultaneous deaths of Sly Stone and Brian Wilson at age 82 last week. “Both of them poets of summer,” Rob Sheffield says in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now. “Both chroniclers of the American dream in California. Both from pretty much the same era. Both of them also started out very young as musical prodigies, who figured out early that they needed to be in charge of their music.”

As a Bay Area DJ, Sly Stone slipped Bob Dylan and the Beatles into R&b playlists,...

“Hilarity And Sadness And Wisdom”: Award-Winning Documentary ‘Come See Me In The Good Light’ Lights Up DC/Dox Festival
Image
In one of her poems from the collection Love Letter from the Afterlife, Andrea Gibson writes, “Why did no one tell us that to die is to be reincarnated in those we love while they are still alive?”

These are not the idle musings of someone for whom death is a distant and vaguely unreal prospect. For the past several years, the poet laureate of Colorado has confronted a life-threatening illness after their diagnosis with stage 4 ovarian cancer. The story of how Gibson and her partner, spoken word poet Meg Falley, have faced this existential challenge together — choosing to live joyously, to laugh, and most of all to remain full of love – is told in the award-winning documentary Come See Me in the Good Light.

Director Ryan White brought his film to the prestigious DC/Dox festival in the nation’s capital Saturday night, participating in a Q&a afterwards.

“This film more so than anything,...

Grammys EP Ben Winston on the risks of producing live TV: ‘I always never know quite why we do it’
Image
If you’ve enjoyed a live TV music special in recent years, chances are Ben Winston produced it.

Since signing off The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2023, which he executive produced, he’s more than had his hands full with his company Fulwell Entertainment, bringing a slew of music specials to the screen — with Dua Lipa, Elton John, and Brandi Carlile this year alone — along with Carpool Karaoke Christmas, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, The Kardashians, to name a few.

He also took on his own Mission: Impossible when he orchestrated Tom Cruise’s jump off the stadium roof as part of the Olympic torch handoff from Paris to L.A. as part of the closing ceremony. And then there was this year’s Grammy Awards — held in the wake of the devastating fires that ravaged Los Angeles.

Inside Taylor Swift’s Victory — and Farewell to the Taylor’s Versions Era
Image
To get her music back, first Taylor Swift had to re-record it. After a consortium led by Scooter Braun bought the rights to the masters for her first six albums in 2019, much to Swift’s displeasure, she hatched a simple, if wildly labor-intensive plan: Make new Taylor’s Versions of her catalog available, and then ask her massive fanbase to stream them instead of the originals.

No one had ever tried anything like it before, but fans complied by the millions. The strategy worked exactly as intended, devaluing the masters...

At the kick-off show of his newly rechristened Land of Hope and Dreams Tour with the E Street Band, Springsteen framed his criticism of Donald Trump in patriotism: “The America that I’ve sung to you about for 50 years is real, and regardless of its faults, is...

Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson Charm Hollywood Bowl With Favorites, Deep Cuts at Outlaw Music Festival Tour Stop
Image
Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson turned the Hollywood Bowl into a haven for Americana and country on Friday night, as the two legends brought the Outlaw Music Festival back to the storied venue for the second year in a row.

Dylan went on just as dusk settled, and the stage lit up like a noir rodeo, revealing Dylan’s signature piano. He and his band — dressed in black like outlaw undertakers — opened with a swaggering “Things Have Changed.”

The stage setup was simple: An image of a peaceful mountain lake backdrop that resembled a fancy water bottle label, blending well with the surrounding Hollywood Hills, and a crowd full of cowboy hats and rhinestones.

Opening for Dylan and Nelson Friday night were bluegrass stars Sierra Hull and Billy Strings, while upcoming Outlaw Fest 2025 tour stops will rotate in acts like Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and Nathaniel Rateliff. Outlaw lineups...

Contestant on The Voice Gets Polarizing Reaction to Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”: Watch
Image
A contestant on The Voice named Lucia Flores-Wiseman put a jazzy twist on the Soundgarden classic “Black Hole Sun” on Monday night (May 12th), eliciting a polarizing reaction from viewers.

Flores-Wiseman sang the first couple lines of the song a capella in a very stylized vocal reminiscent of Amy Winehouse or Billie Holiday. She continued singing the iconic grunge tune as a minimal string section kicked in, and eventually belted out the song over a heavier orchestral arrangement.

She received praise from her coach, Adam Levine, as well as another Voice coach, Kelsea Ballerini, who called Flores-Wiseman “a star.” However, the commentary on the official YouTube post of her performance is quite divided.

One person wrote, “Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I can’t understand a single word she’s singing. Like she’s good, don’t get me wrong, but she kind of sounds like she’s singing in cursive?...

Jeff Goldblum Is Looking Forward to His Next ‘Wicked’ Song
Image
Hardcore Wicked fans have a lot of unshakable opinions, including the widespread belief that the Wizard’s big moment in the first act, the talky “A Sentimental Man,” is the Broadway show’s single worst song. But when Jeff Goldblum stepped in as the Wizard for director Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster film version, he managed to salvage the song in fans’ eyes, playing up the character’s toxic blend of smarm and charisma. “I’ve had a lot of positive anecdotal response like that,” Goldblum says in the new...

Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil Thinks Chris Cornell Would “Definitely Be Stoked” About Rock Hall Induction
Image
Soundgarden are one of nine new additions to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, and founding guitarist Kim Thayil feels that the late Chris Cornell would “definitely be stoked” about their imminent induction.

In a new interview with Billboard, the guitarist and songwriter expressed plenty of gratitude towards the Rock Hall and the band’s fans for recognizing their impact after all these years. According to Thayil, Cornell would be just as proud. “He’s the one who convinced me how appreciative the fans and our peers and the Soundgarden community — that includes the people that we work with and work for us — would be about it,” said Thayil.

“He realized how important that was, and he understood that would be important to us because it’s important to people who cared about us and helped us and supported us all along. That’s how I believe Chris would respond to this.

Veeps to Premiere Music-Led Indie Dramedy ‘Nora’ as the Streaming Platform Expands to Include Films (Exclusive)
Image
Veeps, the live-streaming platform co-founded by Joel and Benji Madden and owned by Live Nation, has expanded its business to include narrative films, with the indie motherhood dramedy “Nora” among the first available titles.

Following a theatrical release by Suncatcher Productions and Blonde Dog Productions, “Nora” will make its global streaming debut via Veeps on Saturday, May 24.

The feature film — written, directed by and starring Anna Campbell — follows Nora, a singer-songwriter who gives up her music career and settles in suburbia to raise her child. But, as the film’s logline explains, “her dreams have other plans” — meaning that, as Nora contends with a precocious child, a new home and navigating the PTA moms, her musical aspirations live on through whimsical music video fantasies that capture her truth.

Described as “a visceral portrait of a woman in rediscovery,” the lyrical film premiered in March at the Cinequest Film Festival, where...

A Neil Young Tribute With a Heart of Gold
Image
Neil Young isn’t just one of the most covered songwriters of all time, he’s also one of the most tributed. There have been several albums of people doing his songs released over the decades, first and most famously the 1989 LP The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young, populated by artists from the then-ascendant alt-rock generation such as Nick Cave, the Flaming Lips, the Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr., fans who were just as admiring of Young’s contrarian swerves as they were of his beloved 1970s chestnuts. One of...

Fiona Apple has contributed a cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” for Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I, a new tribute album out today.

Apple provides a faithful, sturdy rendition of the Young classic, not altering the arrangement much and focusing on replicating the song’s mode of reflection and yearning. Apple’s vocals never stray away from her warm alto range, contrasting with Young’s original songbird-like croon on the original. And as always with Fiona Apple, her emotive command of language brings weight to every word on “Heart of Gold.” Listen to Apple’s cover of the song below.

Pearl made her debut on the March 5 episode of The Masked Singer Season 13 as a member of Group B. The sultry sea jewel's first song on Fox's reality TV show was "Saving All My Love for You" and she had the four panelists guessing such famous names as Regina King, Shania Twain, and Joan Jett.

The following weeks, Pearl delivered performances of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" and "Here You Come Again," prompting the judges to add Madonna, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Trisha Yearwood, Kellie Pickler, and Carrie Underwood to their list of potential A-listers. When the Lucky 6 merged and Pearl belted out "Conga," Faith Hill, Jody Watley, and Pat Benatar were mentioned. Halestorm Brood About Undying Evil on New Power Ballad, ‘Darkness Always Wins’
Image
It’s barely Tuesday morning, you’re finishing your first coffee of the day, shrugging and sighing at the headlines, and here comes Lzzy Hale to bum you out. The message of Halestorm’s latest single, a moody power ballad titled “Darkness Always Wins,” essentially reminds you that evil never dies. The chorus starts off positively enough — “We’re all fighters, holding up our lighters/Chasing off the monsters, drowning in our sins” — but then Hale hits you with the ugly truth: “With every last breath, try to stop the sunset/Running with the shadows,...

Halestorm Return with ’80s-Inspired Anthem “Darkness Always Wins”: Stream
Image
Halestorm have unleashed a new song titled “Darkness Always Wins.” The single offers the first taste of the band’s as-yet-untitled new album, set for release later this year.

“Darkness Always Wins” features Lzzy Hale’s powerhouse vocals on full display, with the song reminiscent of an ’80s power ballad. In fact, there are lyrical nods to the era (intentional or not), with such lines as “running with the shadows” (Pat Benatar) and “fading into black” (Metallica).

Around the 2:30 mark, things get heavier, as Joe Hottinger’s guitar kicks in, followed by a primal scream from Lzzy shortly thereafter.

“‘Darkness Always Wins’ is not a song of hope, nor is it a song of despair,” stated Lzzy of the single. “It is reality. History repeating. Evil prevails and the good depart first. But we are not doomed as long as we persist and keep our fires burning.
