Cheo Hodari Coker at an event for Notorious (2009)

Does ‘Sinners’ Box Office Coverage Make the Case for Media Diversity?
Image
When “Sinners” opened to very good if not overwhelming box office numbers, the film’s performance elicited several skeptical reactions from the entertainment press. In doing so, those outlets and their industry sources might have made a case for the value of diversity, at a time when Dei efforts at media companies have come under siege by the Trump administration.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler’s period horror film has provided a welcome spring surge for Hollywood. Yet the tentative responses to its initial results missed the enthusiasm that greeted its arrival, particularly within the Black community, which both over-indexes in terms of movie attendance and is underrepresented in media jobs.

The coverage in outlets like Variety and the New York Times prompted anger across social media, and allegations of double standards when it comes to filmmakers of color. The subsequent discussion has also focused on blind spots in Hollywood about Coogler...

Ben Stiller, Patrick Schwarzenegger and More Call Out Variety for Defanging ‘Sinners’ Box Office
Image
Variety came under fire over the weekend for a box office report that dinged Ryan Coogler’s hit horror film, “Sinners,” for having an uphill battle to make a profit despite its impressive $63 million global opening.

Ben Stiller and Patrick Schwarzenegger were among the Hollywood figures calling out the trade outlet for its questionable framing, defending “Sinners” for its clear box office win and emphasizing that — even in light of its $90 million price tag before expenses for global marketing — the $63 million haul is accounting for just three days.

“In what universe does a $60 million opening for an original studio movie warrant this headline?” Stiller tweeted Sunday, re-sharing Variety’s post.

That post read: “‘Sinners’ has amassed $61 million in its global debut. It’s a great result for an original, R-rated horror film, yet the Warner Bros. release has a $90 million price tag before global marketing expenses, so profitability remains a ways away.

One of the executive producers behind Netflix's Luke Cage breaks down the broad strokes for the series' tragically canceled third season.

In a January 25 X post, Luke Cage executive producer and Creed II scribe Cheo Hodari Coker responded to a fan post lauding the series' storytelling. Oscar-Winning Writer John Ridley Adapting Isaac Asimov's Sci-Fi Novel 'The Caves of Steel'
Image
Another classic Isaac Asimov science fiction novel is getting a live-action adaptation, with a crack duo of writers bringing The Caves of Steel to the big screen. Isaac Asimov is one of the most prolific sci-fi writers of all-time, alongside other notable authors in the genre, like William Gibson, Frank Herbert, Richard Matheson, and Gene Wolfe. Many of his works have been adapted to the big and small screen in the past, including Apple TV+'s Foundation, the Will Smith-led I, Robot, and Bicentennial Man starring Robin Williams.

Per Deadline, Asimov's 1953 sci-fi detective novel, The Caves of Steel is being adapted into a feature film. The movie is in the early stages of development, but the project has found its writers. John Ridley, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind 12 Years a Slave, is teaming up with Cheo Hodari Coker to co-write the script. Coker is best known for creating Marvel's vastly underappreciated Luke Cage series,...

John Ridley Developing ‘Caves Of Steel’ Film Based On Isaac Asimov Sci-Fi Novel For 20th Century Studios
Image
Exclusive: John Ridley, the Oscar winner behind 12 Years a Slave, is developing a feature take on Isaac Asimov’s 1954 sci-fi novel The Caves of Steel for 20th Century Studios, Deadline can reveal.

Ridley plans to direct Caves of Steel, having written the most recent draft of the script with Cheo Hodari Coker, the multi-hyphenate best known for creating Marvel’s recent Luke Cage series.

A landmark work of science fiction, which is the first in Asimov’s Robot series, The Caves of Steel introduces readers to a future Earth where humanity has retreated into vast, domed cities — known as the “Caves of Steel” — to escape the harshness of the outside world. The story follows Elijah Baley, a New York City detective who is reluctantly partnered with R. Daneel Olivaw, a humanoid robot, to solve the high-profile murder of a “Spacer” scientist. As Baley navigates the investigation, tensions arise between Earth’s overcrowded, robot-wary society and the more advanced Spacer civilizations, which embrace robotic integration.

Previously, BBC adapted the novel for television, with radio and game adaptations also emerging. Sources said Ridley’s film may also take inspiration from The Caves of Steel‘s sequels, The Naked Sun and The Robots of Dawn.

For Asimov, the Robot series captured a longtime interest in artificial intelligence, which produced his influential “Three Laws of Robotics.” Introduced in his 1942 short story “Runaround,” these laws have become a framework for discussing AI ethics and the challenges of programming intelligent systems to interact safely and effectively with humans.

Asimov’s “Three Laws” are discussed in I, Robot, the 2004 film starring Will Smith, which took inspiration (and its name) from the Russian-born author’s collection of short stories, published in 1950. One of the most prolific and influential writers in the history of science fiction, Asimov is also well known for his Foundation series, exploring the rise and fall of civilizations across a galactic empire, which inspired the Apple series, heading into its third season. Notably, he also co-wrote 1992’s The Positronic Man, which was adapted into the 1999 film Bicentennial Man starring Robin Williams.

Ridley won an Oscar for writing Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, earning three Emmy nominations for his work on American Crime, the anthology he created for ABC. Most recently, he wrote, directed, and produced Shirley, a biopic of the United States’ first Black congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm, for Netflix, which starred Academy Award winner Regina King. As a director, his other credits include series like Five Days at Memorial, Godfather of Harlem, Guerrilla and Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992, as well as 2013’s Jimi: All Is by My Side. Ridley is also known for his work with DC Comics including “The Other History of the DC Universe,” “Gcpd: The Blue Wall,” and the recently released “Justice League: The Atom Project #1.”

Most recently writing on and co-producing Paris Barclay’s doc Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee of the same name, Coker has also worked on films like Notorious and Creed II, along with Southland, Ray Donovan and other series.

Ridley is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Rohner Walerstein; Coker by CAA and Literate Management/Production.

8 items we need to see from Marvel Studios in 2025
Image
Marvel Studios has a brand-new bag of whimsy for us to unwrap in 2025, including The Russo Brothers and Rdj making a majestic return to the screen, a path for real "fantastic" origins, a few favorite characters making a comeback, and more for TV.

But what else could we get? If we wanted to be greedy--and face it, fandoms only want--about 2025, where else could surprises hail? What other characters could these new projects introduce to unveil in post-credit scenes? How can we connect what's in store for us in the rejuvenated "Multiverse Saga?" Of course, Kevin Feige and the gang have ideas, but we do, too.

Like us, your humble servants at Bam Smack Pow.

Did Venom: The Last Dance cut in to the Sony Spider-Man Universe's future?
Image
When Sony Pictures determined they would make the best of the IP rights of the Spider-Man universe at the turn of the century, there was a plan to include historic characters like Venom. Much like with the more favored and dashing stepbrother over at Marvel Studios, the movies would be loosely connected and build on the infrastructure Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr., Gil Kane, and other luminaries established in the comics.

Yet, when Venom was "co-created" by Todd MacFarlane in 1988, debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 252, the thought about the symbiote was being fueled by revenge. Spider-Man was his first human host. They got separated. We'd all get perturbed if our landlord made us homeless. So, yes, Venom wanted revenge.

He was a creature of intense rage, which is why he targeted Eddie Brock. From Klyntar to San Francisco, Venom came to destroy anything -- or...

Luke Cage's MCU Future Gets Uncertain Update From Mike Colter
Image
Mike Colter's last appearance as Luke Cage was in 2018. While fans are hopeful the character will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Colter isn't so sure about his future as Power Man.

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the upcoming fourth and final season of Evil, Colter shared what it would take to return as Luke Cage, admitting that he "would totally entertain a good script and idea that made sense." However, while MCU fans would like to see all the Netflix/Marvel heroes revived under Marvel Studios, Colter revealed that he's perfectly fine never playing Luke Cage again. "I don't stay up at night thinking about it, nor do I recall it unless someone brings it up," Colter added. "But I enjoyed my time. I don't look in the past. If something comes up, great, we'll talk about it. But right now, I'm [past it]."

Nathan Louis Jackson, the playwright, screenwriter and producer who worked on the Netflix superhero series Luke Cage, has died. He was 44.

Jackson died Aug. 22 at his home in Lenexa, Kansas, his wife, Megan Mascorro-Jackson, told The Hollywood Reporter. She said her husband had heart issues — he had undergone an aortic dissection in 2019 — and the family has chosen against an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Since 2010, Jackson also wrote and produced for such other shows as Southland, Shameless, Resurrection, 13 Reasons Why, Genius and S.W.A.T.

Superheroes Are Finally Losing Their Grasp on Moviegoers – and That’s Good for the Box Office
Image
For the first time in years, DC and Marvel superhero movies failed to dominate the annual theatrical marketplace in 2022 as comic book flicks were overshadowed by big-budget franchises like “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World Dominion,” which rose to the top of the box office heap instead.

With 1.5 billion for “Avatar” and 1.49 billion for “Top Gun,” these sequels finally broke the chokehold that superheroes have held on the global box office since 2017, the last time that blockbuster movies unrelated to DC Studios or Marvel led the movie pipeline.

Meanwhile, 2023 brings a slew of big franchise titles, including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Fast X” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which rank among the most anticipated despite featuring not a single caped crusader.

Are audiences finally tired of superhero stories? Some Hollywood insiders say Yes. “You’re used to maybe one or two Marvel movies...

How Public Enemy Taught a Generation Black History
Image
No group had it locked like Public Enemy the year Mandela was finally let out of prison. In 1990, when their momentum-grabbing third album dropped, its songs and the band’s logo — a defiant, beret-adorned B-boy in the crosshairs of a gun — were as ubiquitous as the African medallions worn by Black folks in virtually every North American city. If 1988’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is Public Enemy’s brilliant bedrock, Fear of a Black Planet represents their all-encompassing apex. This Black History Month is...

Billy Preston Getting Docu Film Treatment In Paris Barclay-Helmed Film From White Horse & Homegrown Pictures
Image
Exclusive: White Horse Pictures and Homegrown Pictures have teamed on an untitled documentary feature about the legendary musician and genius keyboardist Billy Preston. He was called the Fifth Beatle, because he the only non-member ever to be credited on a Beatles recording. He had plenty of his own hits and co-wrote the song Joe Cocker made famous, You Are So Beautiful. Fifteen years after his death in 2006, Billy Preston was inducted this past weekend into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Paris Barclay, the multi-Emmy-winning director, producer, and writer will direct. Cheo Hodari Coker is writing the film alongside Barclay.

The film is produced by Homegrown’s Stephanie Allain, White Horse’s Jeanne Elfant Festa, (Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart) and Nigel Sinclair. The exec producers are Barclay, Daniel Shaw, G. Marq Roswell, Olivia Harrison, Jonathan Clyde, and White Horse Pictures’ Nicholas Ferrall and Cassidy Hartmann. Coker is co-producing and Erikka Yancy serves as the film’s supervising producer. Pic is presented by Concord Originals alongside Impact Partners, Chicago Media Project, and Play/Action Pictures, Polygram Entertainment, Dave Knott, and Sobey Road Entertainment.

Said Allain: “A singular figure in music history, Billy Preston lent his genius to elevate the most celebrated artists of the 20th Century. Grateful to work with this team, using this soundtrack to explore his personal journey and finally place him front and center.” Barclay said “the Billy Preston we know was an incomparable musician,” but the Billy we’ll see in this documentary was a mass of contradictions. I’m thrilled to dig deeper into the complex man under the Afro, and behind the famous smile.”

A self taught prodigy keyboard player, Preston was just 16 when he met the not-yet-famous Beatles while playing for Little Richard while they toured Hamburg in 1962. He befriended the young, impoverished band by sneaking them food and drinks. Later in the ’60s, this led to Preston playing on The Beatles’ Let It Be and Abbey Road albums as a credited musician, and performing with the Beatles in their last live performance as a group – the famous Roof Top concert. The Grammy Award-winning artist had solo career that included number one hits, and working with The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nat King Cole, Sly Stone, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson, among others. Preston is featured in the upcoming Peter Jackson-directed documentary The Beatles: Get Back.

Despite an enviable career in music, Preston had a challenging personal story that involved sexual abuse he endured as a child. He struggled with his sexuality and had substance abuse problems he used to make his pain. Only later in life did he come to terms with his truth and so find his peace.

Barclay and Hodari Coker asked to make a shout out to those who knew Preston or worked with him, who and may have recordings, photographs, or personal memories to make contact through http://www.billyprestondoc.com.

UTA Independent Film Group with White Horse Pictures helped raise the funding and they will broker sales of the film.

Allain’s Homegrown is repped by UTA, First Artists and Marcy Morris; Barclay is ICM and Lovett Management.

Michael Hyatt Weighs in on the Snowfall vs. The Wire Debate, Proving She's the Only One Who Should
Image
The ongoing social media debate about which urban crime drama is better — Snowfall or The Wire — is happening in large part because the former is arguably enjoying its best season to date.

The fact that the FX offering, with its Season 4 finale airing this Wednesday (10/9c), is drawing comparisons to one of the most compelling shows to ever air on television is a testament to the late Snowfall co-creator John Singleton’s ability to build a series that has strengthened over time. Last week’s penultimate episode, for instance, charged into our living rooms with nonstop tension and three bloody deaths.

Parks And Recreation Star Reportedly Eyed For Sony’s Spider-Woman
The Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters is continuing to expand, with a series of projects in various stages of development despite the franchise still having only released one movie to date. Of course, that film was Venom and it raked in over $850 million at the box office, but the jury remains out on Jared Leto’s Morbius, and if one of next year’s two Spumc titles bomb, then the studio could be forced to abandon yet another Spider-Man adjacent franchise well ahead of schedule.

Cheo Hodari Coker’s Nighwatch, J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter, S.J. Clarkson’s Madame Web and Marc Guggenheim’s Jackpot have all been officially announced over the last few years, but there’s also another movie in the works from Olivia Wilde which hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. The actress’ debut feature behind the camera, Booksmart, received widespread critical acclaim and...

Jared Leto Says Morbius Is Part Of An Expanding Cinematic Universe
Sony’s last attempt at building a shared universe didn’t go according to plan, with the disappointing box office performance and generally lukewarm reception to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 nixing any further outings, despite the studio hedging their bets in a big way by stuffing the story full of Easter Eggs and teases of things to come, as well as hiring Drew Goddard to write and direct Sinister Six along with announcing various other spinoffs including Silver & Black and Spider-Man 2099.

Of course, Spider-Man was rebooted shortly afterwards as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the absence of their marquee hero hasn’t stopped the company from trying again. Venom surprised a lot of people after it raked in over $850 million globally, but next year could see the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters sink or swim with the double whammy of Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, and More Eviscerate Trump for Failing to Condemn White Supremacists
Image
The first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden was an embarrassing waste of time, and no moment caused as much of an extreme reaction from the American public as when Trump failed to publicly condemn white supremacists. Moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump if would speak out against white supremacist groups that have committed acts of violence across America. Trump tried to side-step the question first by saying, “I would say, almost everything I see is from the left-wing,” and then by reacting, “I’m willing to do anything. I want to see peace.”

When pressed again by Wallace to condemn white supremacists, Trump responded, “What do you want to call them? Give me a name. Give me a name? Proud Boys, stand back, standby.” The Proud Boys are a mens-only neo-fascist organization with ties to numerous violent acts in Portland. Trump’s comments emboldened members of the white supremacist group,...

Kara Swisher, Ben Smith and Cheo Hodari Coker on How the Coronavirus ‘Accelerated’ Changes in Media (Video)
Kara Swisher
Coronavirus has changed everything, but as New York Media’s Kara Swisher said in TheGrill 2020 Tuesday, the real question is, “Will it continue afterward?”

Swisher and her co-panelists, the New York Times’ Ben Smith and “Luke Cage” executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker, think it will. As they told TheWrap founder and editor in chief Sharon Waxman, they believe the change will be enduring because much of it began prior to the upheaval of 2020.

As newsrooms and entertainment staffs face calls for more diversity, for instance, Coker said inclusion isn’t a new demand. He had a bleak message on how distant it remains as a goal, too: “Society has to fall apart for a brother or sister to get a break.”

Coker reflected on his past career as a journalist and noted the challenges facing the Los Angeles Times, which has seen calls to diversify its editorial staff and leadership...

The film won early laudatory reviews such as Antony Lane’s remark in The New Yorker: “July uses ‘Kajillionaire’ to present her credentials as a transcendentalist of the humdrum.”

Reginald Hudlin Remembers Persuading Chadwick Boseman to Play Civil Rights Icon Thurgood Marshall
Chadwick Boseman
It takes a great man to play a great man; Chadwick Boseman did it four times!

To have the gravity, the intelligence, the physicality to portray any of his signature roles — Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall and T’Challa, the Black Panther — is a breathtaking feat, but to give four entirely different performances is a striking achievement. Screenwriter Cheo Hodari Coker compared Chadwick to the late great John Cazale, another actor who created an impressive body of work in a very short time before cancer robbed us of him.

We met at the Art and Film Ball at Lacma. Laura Wasserman, a longtime friend, sat us next to each other because she figured we would have a “lot to talk about.” She couldn’t have been more right! Chadwick had just been announced as the star of “Black Panther,” based on a comic book I wrote for four years.

Here's Why Luke Cage Had to Kill Off Mahershala Ali's Cottonmouth So Quickly
Image
The first season of Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage was very much a story of two halves, caused in no small part by the sudden, and surprisingly early, death of the central villain Cornell Stokes a.k.a. Cottonmouth. Played by two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, the character's mysterious, tortured back story intrigued audiences, making it even more shocking when he was suddenly killed off about halfway through the season. Well, in his response to a fan on social media, Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has explained why this had to happen.

"We only had him for 7 episodes. That's why he agreed to do the show."

So, by the sounds of it, Cottonmouth's early demise was due to a scheduling issue rather than a creative choice, with Ali only available to shoot seven episodes of the show before moving on to other projects. The Netflix show's take...

Spike Lee’s ‘Da 5 Bloods’ Puts Him in the Oscar Race, Even with 10 Months to Go
Image
After Spike Lee made a triumphant 2018 return to Cannes with “BlacKkKlansman,” which later won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, he was meant to premiere Vietnam drama “Da 5 Bloods” at Cannes 2020: It would have played out of competition as he presided over the Competition jury. Instead, the movie went straight to a June 12 Netflix release — but that low-key bow won’t keep him out of Oscar contention. While Covid-19 pushed back the Oscars 2021 calendar, this early contender is strong enough to last the next 10 months.

Cinephiles and critics (81 Metascore), hungry for a movie of substance, are praising Lee’s rip-roaring fable about four Big Red One infantrymen (led by Lee alumnae Delroy Lindo and Clarke Peters) who return to Saigon to dig up not only the remains of a fallen colleague (Chadwick Boseman), but also buried treasure. The movie references “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” “Scarface,” and “Apocalypse Now,...

Democratic Debate #2 Night 1 Review: CNN Goes ‘Bachelorette’ As Soundbiting Candidates Try To Seduce America
The first night of the Democrats’ second round of presidential debates of the 2020 election cycle was billed as a matchup between Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and the two contenders did not disappoint on the CNN-hosted huddle as they faced The Bachelorette season finale on ABC.

In tone and temperament, the two pageants were similar tonight in their search for love and ratings — intentionally or not. Coming in hot and fiery from the start on their mutual policy of “Medicare for All” and railing against the rich and a “corrupt, rigged system,” to quote the Massachusetts senator, the two progressive parental figures went straight for the heart and soul of their party. It was a dash that might leave Joe Biden and Donald Trump as the real winners of tonight’s near-endless debate, in no small part thanks to ex-Today producer Jeff Zucker.

Emphasizing style over structure and in...

Dolph Lundgren Wants Michael B. Jordan to Direct Creed 3
Dolph Lundgren
As we all know good and well by this point in time, action movie extraordinaire, Dolph Lundgren recently reprised his classic Rocky IV role of Captain Ivan Drago in director Steven Caple Jr.'s Creed III alongside Michael B Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and Tessa Thompson. But is the Masters of the Universe star up for returning as Drago if Creed 3 steps into the ring? Lucky it seems that not only would Lundgren loved to return as The Siberian Express but he thinks none other than Michael B. Jordan should direct the third film.

Dolph Lundgren was recently at Celebrity Fan Fest and spoke a bit about the possibility of returning as Drago in Creed 3, saying this.

"I've heard things about a Creed 3. I think Drago is in it somehow. I heard Michael B. Jordan wants to direct something, maybe he could direct it like Stallone and Rocky. I hope I'm in it.
