Nicole Scherzinger will play Norma Desmond in Broadway’s Sunset Blvd. for six additional performances prior to the limited engagement’s conclusion on July 13.

Scherzinger typically does not perform the role on Tuesday evenings when Mandy Gonzalez steps in. Producers announced today that the Olivier Award-winning Scherzinger will play on six Tuesdays between April 8 and June 10 due to “overwhelming demand.”

Scherzinger will now perform the following evenings in addition to her regular schedule: Tuesday, April 8; Tuesday, April 29; Tuesday, May 6; Tuesday, May 13; Tuesday, May 27; and Tuesday, June 10. As previously announced, Scherzinger has extended her run in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical through Sunday, July 13.

Exclusive: Mandy Gonzalez, star of In The Heights, Hamilton and Aida, will play the role of Norma Desmond at select performances of Broadway’s upcoming Sunset Blvd., taking one performance a week with star Nicole Scherzinger taking all others.

Gonzalez will play her first performance on Tuesday, October 22. The casting was announced today by producers of the Jamie Lloyd-directed revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which begins previews at the St. James Theatre on Saturday, September 28 ahead of a Sunday, October 20 opening night.

Gonzalez said in a statement, “In my 25 years playing leading ladies on Broadway, I’ve never been more excited for a show. The role of Norma Desmond is iconic, Jamie Lloyd’s direction is masterful, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score is sumptuous. The 43rd annual celebration will be broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and is hosted this year by Alfonso Ribeiro. A total of 20 cameras positioned throughout the city will capture the fireworks around the National Mall.

Scheduled performers include Boyz II Men, Chicago, Belinda Carlisle, Babyface, Maddie & Tae, Charles Esten, Renée Fleming and Adrienne Warren, with performances from America’s Got Talent finalists Northwell Nurse Choir, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the U.S. Army Band with “Pershing’s Own” during the fireworks display, accompanied by live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery.

The Broadway cast of Hamilton will star Miguel Cervantes in the title role when the hit musical resumes performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on September 14.

Cervantes had only recently started playing the role on Broadway when the production, along with the rest of the industry, shut down in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. The actor had previously portrayed Hamilton in the Chicago production.

The evening will include a special appearance by Chiké Okonkwo and performances by New York City public school students impacted by the Miller program. Additional performers and appearances to be announced at a later date. Sasha Hutchings, Hamilton original cast member and Foundation Master Artist Council member, will host. She also co-produces along with Arthur Miller Foundation Executive Director Jaime Hastings.

Exclusive: Sony Music Latin has partnered with Tiger Turn Productions for the feature music documentary Fandango at the Wall. Directed by Varda Bar-Kar and executive produced by Quincy Jones, Andrew Young, Carlos Santana, the feature follows Grammy-winning musician and Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra founder Arturo O’Farrill and and Grammy-winning producer Kabir Sehgal as they prepare to record a live album at the U.S.-Mexico border wall.

A Capitol Fourth is set to mark its 40th anniversary with a completely overhauled show.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, PBS’ annual 4th of July celebration will not be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Instead, the special will feature pre-taped performances from iconic locations across the country, including Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. It will then conclude with a live fireworks show from the nation’s capitol.

Capital Concerts announced today the 40th anniversary presentation of A Capitol Fourth, the national July 4th TV tradition on PBS.

This year’s show is co-hosted by two-time Emmy Award-nominated actor and producer John Stamos and multi-platinum recording artist and star of television, film and the Broadway stage Vanessa Williams. The nation’s 244th birthday celebration will feature new performances from iconic locations across the country, including Washington, D.C, New York, Nashville, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, as well as highlights from the concert’s forty-year history and the stirring patriotic favorites viewers enjoy on the Fourth of July. The continued coronavirus pandemic has forced the cancellation of a live Independence Day concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, but producers are planning a virtual event for PBS.

A Capitol Fourth, now in its 40th year, will feature pre-taped performances from around the country, hosted by John Stamos and Vanessa Williams.

As was the case with the recent National Memorial Day Concert, segments for A Capitol Fourth are being pre-taped, and the special also will feature highlights from past years.

The 90-minute show also will feature a tribute by Stamos to workers on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis, with Chrissy Metz singing I’m Standing with You.

There also will be segments honoring African American heroes from the past and present, and a salute to wounded warriors. A live segment of the special will feature the annual fireworks display over the D.C. skyline.

Last week, Breast Cancer Research Foundation held its first-ever Virtual Hot Pink Evening, taking their renowned Hot Pink Party to a new virtual format with a very special live-stream viewing experience.

At the open of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s inaugural virtual Hot Pink Evening, the event’s lead co-chair Kinga Lampert reminded attendees that “breast cancer doesn’t stop for coronavirus and neither can we.” And, though the Bcrf’s annual fundraiser looked significantly different amid the pandemic, the show did in fact go on, raising more than $5.2 million for breast cancer research.

Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, Karlie Kloss, Deborah Norville and Rachael Ray were among the Bcrf supporters who participated in the livestream event, with breast cancer survivors Edie Falco, Joan Lunden, Gretta Monahan, Amy Robach and Anne Thompson sharing their own experiences battling the disease.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, an experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy — to have a doctor stand opposite you and tell you that you have cancer,” Falco said.

The Musical, Jagged Little Pill, Company, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Chicago, Diana, Mean Girls, Girl from the North Country, Six, and Mrs. Doubtfire will take part in Sunday’s Broadway Does Mother’s Day, a digital variety benefitting Broadway Cares’ Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund.

The show is designed to replace some of the funds usually raised by Broadway’s annual Easter Bonnet Competition, an event that was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The digital sketch show will include Broadway stars, their children and their mothers, with musical numbers, comedy and special guests planned. Last November’s sold-out, one-night-only benefit concert featuring 79 performers from Disney’s 25 years on Broadway will be streamed April 13 to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund.

In addition to the taped performances, live guest interviews with Disney stars from their homes will be interspersed throughout the evening. Ryan McCartan will host the stream live from his family’s basement.

Performers from across the spectrum of Disney’s stage productions will participate in a one-night benefit concert marking Disney’s 25th anniversary on Broadway and benefitting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Whoopi Goldberg has also signed up to appear.

Called “Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway,” the concert will feature performers from Frozen, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, along with such other non-Disney Broadway hits as Hamilton and Mean Girls.

The benefit is set for Monday, November 4, at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theater, currently home to Disney’s Aladdin.

The performer line-up includes Jelani Alladin, Heidi Blickenstaff, Sierra Boggess, Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Merle Dandridge, Susan Egan, The View‘s Goldberg, Mandy Gonzalez, Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Beth Leavel (The Prom), Kara Lindsay Ashley Park (Mean Girls), Krysta Rodriguez, Michael James Scott (Aladdin), Kissy Simmons (The Lion King), Josh Strickland (Tarzan), Rema Webb and Alton Fitzgerald White (The Lion King).

Also planned for the evening is a reunion of the Newsies cast. The musical, based on the 1992 film, ran on Broadway from 2012 to 2014.

Disney on Broadway began in 1993 with Beauty and the Beast, the first of 10 Disney titles, so far, to hit the stage.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was founded in 1998 and has raised more than $300 million for essential services for people with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

There are more than a few streaming services in the marketplace — far more than 200, in fact — but a service billing itself as the first streaming network dedicated to the world of theater is planning to debut in late summer.

Stage will launch in August with a free version before phasing in a subscription-based variant in October. It will feature original scripted, variety and reality series, live theater, documentaries, talk shows, concerts and Broadway shows, films and international stage productions. The free version will preview of original programming in production, micro-series and licensed films. The subscription launch (with no price specified as yet) will expand the amount of programming to 500 total hours. Initially, Stage will be available only in the U.S., though an international rollout is planned in 2019. No distribution partnerships with streaming gateways like Roku, Chromecast or Apple were mentioned in the official launch announcement.
