Mark Strong Talks Before I Go To Sleep, the Ambiguity of His Role, Working with Rowan Joffe, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Grimsby and More
Mark Strong has made a career out of playing some of Hollywood’s most cold and calculating villains, but in Rowan Joffe’s stylish new psychological thriller, Before I Go To Sleep, he keeps audiences guessing to the last second about his true intentions. Strong plays Dr. Nasch, a neuropsychologist who is trying to help a vulnerable amnesiac, Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman), recover her memories about her past without her husband Ben’s (Colin Firth) knowledge. Cast in the unusual role of a sympathetic character, the actor reveals a quite different side of himself than we’re used to seeing on screen. In an exclusive interview, Strong spoke about how he found the script to be an absolute page turner that was impossible to put down, why the ambiguity of the role appealed to him, his approach to playing a character that treads a fine line between being trustworthy or untrustworthy,...

Opening October 31st, the film also stars Colin Firth and Mark Strong. Nicole Kidman Freaks After Waking Up With Colin Firth in ‘Before I Go to Sleep’ Trailer (Video)
Nicole Kidman at an event for The Paperboy (2012)
Nicole Kidman is being terrorized by an assailant she can't remember in the new trailer for “Before I Go to Sleep.” When her character, Christine Lucas, wakes up in bed panicked — she's confused by the strange man sleeping next to her. Turns out it's her husband (played by Colin Firth), but she doesn't recognize him because a bad car accident has left her with anterograde amnesia, which means her character can't keep new memories for very long. Every time Christine goes to sleep for the night, her mind is essentially wiped clean. Also read: Nicole Kidman Can't Remember Who Tried to Kill Her in.

Before I Go to Sleep Review
Cinema has long held a fascination with memories, from the different ways they can be manipulated (Inception, Total Recall) to how crucial they can be in defining who we are (Memento, The Bourne Identity). Before I Go to Sleep slots into the latter grouping; As directed by Rowan Joffé it’s a well-performed and solidly engaging thriller, but it won’t be joining the distinguished pantheon the aforementioned films reside in any time soon.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by S.J. Watson Before I Go to Sleep focuses on Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman), who wakes up with no memory of her existence beyond her early 20’s after she was involved in an accident. She is told this and more information about her life every morning by her weary husband Ben (Colin Firth, reuniting with his The Railway Man co-star). She is also called each day by Dr.

Before I Go To Sleep Review
Based on the best selling novel by S.J. Watson, Before I Go To Sleep builds a dark psychological thriller around Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman), a woman suffering from autograde amnesia after a terrible accident, who everyday wakes up with no memory of the past twenty years of her life. Seemingly in the care of her husband Ben (Colin Firth), while secretly been treated by neuropsychologist Dr. Nash (Mark Strong), she slowly starts to unearth her past, and finds there may be no one around her she can trust. Written and directed by Rowan Joffé, there is no denying Before I Go To Sleep grabs you from the opening frame. There is certainly some Hitchcock, with a bit of Mememto too, in it's DNA, and for the first half of the movie the tension is built nicely, as the mystery unfolds and you are kept guessing at every turn. As a narrative device,...

Before I Go To Sleep review
Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth come back together, for an adaptation of S J Watson's Before I Go To Sleep. Here's our review...

The scenes shared by Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman in The Railway Man earlier this year were the highlights by far of an otherwise disappointing picture. Both stars are excellent independently of one another, but there's clearly something about pairing them up that lifts the work of both.

The two share a lot more screen time in Before I Go To Sleep, writer/director Rowan Joffe's adaptation of the apparently strong book by S J Watson. In fact, they're in each other's arms as the movie opens, although we quickly learn that all is not well. Kidman's character, Christine Lucas, is suffering from memory loss after an unexplained incident. Each day, Firth's Ben Lucas needs to remind her of where she is, who he is, and her recent history.

Before I Go to Sleep review: Nicole Kidman in soapy psychodrama
Director Rowan Joffe; Screenwriter Rowan Joffe; Starring: Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Anne-Marie Duff, Adam Levy; Running time: 92 mins; Certificate: 15

Making the best-seller list on both sides of the pond, Sj Watson's debut novel Before I Go to Sleep was surely a no-brainer for film investors. Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong add value to this British psychological thriller with faint echoes of Memento in that its heroine suffers from a perilous case of amnesia. Gradually, the pieces come together to reveal that the film is less than the sum of its parts, trading instead on a certain soapy noir appeal.

A dingy domestic setting heightens the internal claustrophobia - of being trapped in a body that is unfamiliar - for Christine Lucas, who wakes up every day thinking she is still in college only to be confronted in the mirror with the face of a 40-year-old. It's only very slightly lined,...

Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, and Mark Strong in Before I Go to Sleep (2014)
Exclusive Before I Go To Sleep Poster
Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, and Mark Strong in Before I Go to Sleep (2014)
The last time Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman shared a screen it was in a solid relationship in The Railway Man. Things are a little less calm this time. Before I Go To Sleep promises enough psychological shenanigans to send even the strongest couple into therapy, and its new poster, a Persona-like effort, gives a flavour of the turmoil beneath the surface. Rowan 'son of Roland' Joffé's second feature, the dark-hued thriller sees Kidman play the amnesiac Christine Lucas. Her burden is to solve a dark riddle, Memento-style, despite being stricken with total amnesia every 24 hours. She's understandably reliant on husband Ben's (Firth) help with her frustrating life. Could Mark Strong's doctor be the man to help them out of the maze? Before I Go To Sleep is based on the bestselling mystery potboiler by first-time author S.J. Watson and Joffé promises to mine golden-age Hollywood traditions in his interpretation.

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman are reuniting after The Railway Man for the psychological thriller Before I Go to Sleep. They star as a married couple, Ben and Christine Lucas — figures from S. J. Watson’s novel of the same name. The author wrote the best seller between shifts at the National Health Service while working as an audiologist. Check out the first trailer below. Kidman’s Christine suffers from anterograde amnesia, which means she wakes up every day with no knowledge of who she is, unable to recall events from the recent past. Mark Strong stars as the doctor who helps Kidman attempt to put the puzzle pieces of her life back together and uncover the identity of the person who attacked her, causing her devastating amnesia. 28 Weeks Later and...

Nicole Kidman tries to uncover her past in 'Before I Go to Sleep' trailer
Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, and Mark Strong in Before I Go to Sleep (2014)
You never know how or why amnesia will strike in a Hollywood movie. In the case of Christine Lucas, Nicole Kidman’s character in the upcoming thriller Before I Go to Sleep, the lingering effects of a brutal assault ten years ago leave her unable to hold onto new memories for longer than a day—unfortunate, since there seems to be a rather high-stakes conspiracy unfolding around her.

Written and directed by 28 Days Later screenwriter Rowan Joffe (and based on S.J. Watson’s eponymous 2011 book), the film stars Colin Firth as Christine’s husband and Mark Strong as the doctor...

Colin Firth plays her husband Ben, who must remind Christine who she is every day of her life, with Mark Strong starring as the mysterious Dr. Nash, who is trying to help Christine get her memory back. Written and directed by Rowan Joffe, based on the international best-selling novel by S.J. Watson, Before I Go to Sleep hits theaters on September 12.
