Two 'SNL' Legends Reunite in This Dark Comedy That Will Make You Rethink the Afterlife
Image
Though Maya Rudolph won't be getting an extended Saturday Night Live run, we can always find consolation in diving into the Loot star's lesser-known hits — like Forever, a 2018 dramedy led by the ever-hilarious Rudolph and SNL co-star Fred Armisen. Created by Parks and Recreation writer/producers Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, Forever is a Prime Video hidden gem, a slow-burn exploration of love and the commitment it necessitates that also stars Academy Award-winner Catherine Keener. Surreal, silly, and oftentimes thought-provoking, the series delivers a twist on the classic marriage story and life-after-death trope. Forever is both underrated and understated, featuring surprisingly subtle performances from two comedy legends that you don't want to miss.

‘Awards Chatter’ Live: Maya Rudolph on Reprising Kamala, the Oscars & Her Four Emmy Noms
Image
“I have to tell you, it has been an experience,” says Maya Rudolph upon being asked about the mounting calls from the public, since Joe Biden’s July 21 announcement that he will not be seeking reelection, for her to reprise her Saturday Night Live impersonation of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who she previously portrayed on the show in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Speaking exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast in front of an audience at the San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood, Rudolph, who is currently nominated for four Emmys — best comedy guest actress and best original music/lyrics for NBC’s SNL, best comedy actress for Apple TV+’s Loot and best character voiceover for Netflix’s Big Mouth — continued: “My phone has not stopped. It’s like if I had 50 grandmas and they were sending me articles like, ‘This is the thing I saw you were in!

Maya Rudolph on Landing Four Emmy Noms and Reprising Kamala Harris on ‘SNL’: My Phone Blew Up
Image
In late July, Maya Rudolph’s name was trending on social media. The reason had nothing to do with her four Emmy nominations for her work on three different shows — a feat that is not only impressive but also unheard of. It was because President Joe Biden announced that he wasn’t seeking reelection, and throwing his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now the Democratic nominee.

The extent of the buzz generated by “Saturday Night Live” fans who immediately thought of Rudolph reprising her role of the VP left her speechless. “It was wild!” Rudolph tells Variety. “On top of the excitement I felt, I received so many GIFs that had me laughing: LeBron [James] waiting to get in the game, Roman Roy watching his emails pour in… my phone hasn’t stopped blowing up.”

Yes, when Season 50 premieres on Sept. 28, she is expected to return to “SNL...

Maya Rudolph to Play Kamala Harris on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Maya Rudolph at an event for Shrek the Third (2007)
Maya Rudolph and “Saturday Night Live” are reuniting once more. The former cast member will reprise her role as current vice president and 2024 presidential hopeful Kamala Harris, TheWrap has learned.

Rudolph will play the politician through the 2024 presidential election, and this is far from the first time she has portrayed Harris. She first played the VP in 2019 during the Season 45 premiere of the NBC comedy staple and has played Harris nine times so far. That first appearance saw her join Larry David as Bernie Sanders in the “Impeachment Town Hall” segment. During that same season, Rudolph won a Primetime Emmy Award for the role in an episode hosted by Eddie Murphy with musical guest Lizzo.

Previously, Rudolph appeared as a cast member on “SNL” from 2000 to ’07. During her time on the show, she became known for her impressions of Oprah Winfrey and Donatella Versace, as well as her recurring “Bronx Beat” sketches,...

Writers From ‘Young Sheldon,’ ‘Hacks’ and More Reveal Why Comedies Also Make the Best Dramas at Variety’s A Night in the Writers’ Room Panel
Image
“Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia relied on his “guru” Joni Mitchell (via her song “People’s Parties”) when figuring out the tone for his Apple TV+ comedy: “Laughing and crying are the same release.”

“Our show took itself really seriously even as it went absurd,” Sylvia said. “It’s a gay ‘Fantasia,’ right? It’s tone is maximalist gay. This was a drag show on a $12 million episode budget.”

Sylvia joined “Hacks” co-creator Jen Statsky, “Krapopolis” creator Dan Harmon, “Young Sheldon” exec producer Steve Holland, “What We Do in the Shadows” writer Jake Bender, “Diarra From Detroit” creator/star Diarra Kilpatrick and “Loot” co-creator Alan Yang on a panel exploring comedy writing on Thursday night during Variety‘s A Night in the Writers’ Room. Variety TV editor Michael Schneider led the discussion.

‘Loot’ star Maya Rudolph on her hopes for Season 3 and her viral ‘SNL’ monologue
Image
This post contains spoilers for “Loot” Season 2

The second season of “Loot” ends on a sizable cliffhanger: the unrequited romance between billionaire Molly (Maya Rudolph) and her foundation’s average guy accountant, Arthur (Nat Faxon), becomes requited with a kiss – only for the mutual show of affection to be interrupted by Arthur’s girlfriend. That sets Molly off on her private jet, where she tells her assistant Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster) to take them anywhere in the world.

“We’ve established so much great stuff between characters that I would love to just [keep it going],” Rudolph tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview when asked about what she hopes will happen if Apple TV+ renews “Loot” for a third season. “What’s so cool about the show is that I feel like the possibilities are endless. Having billions of dollars sounds like having a genie in a bottle. You can just...

‘Loot’ Star Maya Rudolph Finds Her Groove As A Philanthropic Billionaire And Looks Good While She Does It: “She Gets To Be Everything”
Image
In Loot, Molly Wells has what Maya Rudolph describes as an “unrelatable amount” of wealth. While that may seem enough of a draw for an actor looking for a role with the promise of incredible outfits, the real interest for Rudolph was the character’s drive to use the money for good — while still wearing amazing costumes. Creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang brought a story of a woman wanting to give back to the world, but it’s Rudolph’s comedic style that brings the Apple TV+ series to life as Wells tries to get her life back on track after a divorce.

Deadline: What drew you to the role of Molly Wells initially?

Maya Rudolph: Molly is such a fun character because she gets to be everything. The initial dive into the idea of playing Molly is you get to play a billionaire, and that just feels...

‘Loot’ Co-Creator Matt Hubbard On A Comedic Look At The “Outsized Influence” Billionaires Have On Our Lives: “It’s Almost Like They’re American Royalty” – Contenders LA
Image
“Molly at the start of Season 2 is nursing her wounds a bit, but has really taken charge of her life,” Maya Rudolph said of her Loot character at the show’s Deadline Contenders TV panel Saturday. “For her, that includes a wellness, a real growth at the Wells Foundation and really stepping into the role of being boss, which is really invigorating for her.”

After going on a worldwide bender, newly single 45-year-old Molly Wells (Rudolph), who became the world’s third-richest woman after divorcing her tech billionaire husband, decides to run the day-to-day operation of the charitable foundation she forgot that she had founded, much to its employees’ chagrin. Loot Cast and EPs Tease Season 2 and Share Their Love for Each Other
Image
Season 2 of Loot on Apple TV+ is a hoot. Breezy and fun, the show finds excellent footing this time around, diving into matters one year after the eccentric Molly Wells (Maya Rudolph in great form again) moves beyond her nasty divorce from billionaire hottie John Novak (Adam Scott) and decides to helm a philanthropic organization, the Wells Foundation.

Look for new potential relationships to emerge for many of the cast this season, and a gaggle of guest stars, Benjamin Bratt (Poker Face) among them, to keep things interesting. This is Loot’s funniest outing yet. (Fingers crossed on a third season.) In the meantime, in an utterly candid, heartfelt MovieWeb interview, co-stars Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Pose), Nat Faxon (The Conners), and Ron Funches (Trolls) express their appreciation for each other, while executive producers/co-creators Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard unpack Season 2 highlights. ‘Loot’ Creators Spill on Guest Stars and Downsizing (Sorta) in Season 2 of Maya Rudolph Comedy
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the Loot season two premiere, “Space for Everyone.”]

While most everyday people struggle to get enough money, Maya Rudolph wrestles with giving all of hers away when she returns as Molly Novak in the season two premiere of Loot, now streaming on AppleTV+.

In the season one finale of the comedy, which aired on Aug. 12, 2022, Molly declared plans to give away every penny of her $120 billion divorce settlement from tech tycoon John Novak (Adam Scott) after a publicly embarrassing business blunder. But even with the personnel issues as head of the Wells Foundation behind her — now that she and executive director Sofia Salinas (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez) are on the same page — Molly finds that being a career philanthropist isn’t as easy as it sounds.

“We wanted to let the audience know that, although Molly is giving her money away, she’s still a little bit clueless about how much that means,...

Maya Rudolph and Joel Kim Booster Unpack Season 2 of Loot
Image
Thankfully, the wonderful Loot has found itself in Season 2. The hilarious Maya Rudolph-led comedy series feels more lived-in this season and manages to dole out the laughs and charm in equal measure. If we had our way, Apple TV+ would renew the hit show for another two seasons. (More on that later.)

Season 2 picks up one year after Molly Wells (Rudolph) settles her tabloid-laced divorce from tech billionaire John Novak (Adam Scott). These days, Molly is loving her role as the head of the Wells Foundation, her philanthropic organization. Now focused on charity work, Molly also swears off men. (But how… with guest star Benjamin Bratt as a potential love interest?) Romance blooms elsewhere with Sofia (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez), and nearly every other main character is given an engaging story arc this season.

Created by Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, the series also stars Joel Kim Booster (Fire Island...

Loot is officially returning for the latest chapter in do-gooder billionaire Molly Wells’ (Maya Rudolph) story on April 3, and she’s making some big changes in Season 2, according to creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang. “So much of Season 1 is sort of having her eyes opened to the world around her and these other people around her culminating in this huge promise she makes of, ‘I’m going to give all my money away.’ And I think through Season 2, the conflict is that is strangely easier said than done,” Hubbard teases. In other words, Molly struggles to find the right way to dole out her charity to those in need. “I think it’s very easy to give money to people who don’t deserve it or are bad actors, and so we spend some time exploring that,” Hubbard continues. As viewers will recall, Season 1 saw Molly promise to give...

‘Loot’ Season 1 Recap And Ending: Everything To Know Before Watching Season 2
Image
Loot on Apple TV+, unlike what the name suggests, is not a heist show. This one is rather an endearing take on a rich woman who is never considered as an emotional person and constantly sidelined for having a lot of money. Created by Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, the show stars Maya Rudolph as a 45-year-old divorcee struggling with her life and yearning to do something different.

Loot season 1 focused on Molly Novak, the wife of the tech billionaire John Novak. She was seemingly happily married to him until she learned of his infidelity. Molly got a divorce and a hefty alimony, a palatial home in Los Angeles with many helpers at her disposal. Molly, at the age of forty-five, had everything but a life of her own. She had her assistant Nicholas, who supported her through marriage and the divorce, but craved for genuine friends and partners, something...

Animal Pictures Partners Maya Rudolph & Natasha Lyonne Part Ways; Lyonne To Continue Under Same Banner
Image
Exclusive: Animal Pictures principals Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne are going their separate ways on the producing front, in an amicable situation, Deadline can exclusively reveal.

Sources ascribed the split to a desire on the part of both producers to entertain differing creative paths and pursuits. Rudolph and Lyonne have made the mutual decision that Lyonne will continue to operate under the name Animal Pictures, as Rudolph branches off to produce independently.

Rudolph and Lyonne affirmed the news in the following statement shared with Deadline: “Moving forward, Natasha will operate under the name Animal Pictures while Maya will produce independently. We will continue to support each other and remain committed to the various projects we’ve developed together and have in the pipeline. We are excited for each other and what the future holds.”

The pair are said to be quite proud of what they’ve achieved together, since Animal Pictures’ 2018 founding,...

Apple’s ‘Loot’ Shut Down as Striking Writers Disrupt Production (Exclusive)
Image
Add Apple’s Loot to the list of shows that have been impacted by the writers strike.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Apple comedy produced by Universal Television has shut down after picketers disrupted filming of the comedy starring and exec produced by Maya Rudolph. Production is currently on hold and it’s unclear when — or even if — it will resume.

Reps for producers Universal Television declined comment, and Apple did not immediately respond to THR’s request for comment.

A source close to the production said picketing members of the Writers Guild of America arrived at the Bel-Air mega-mansion that is used for filming the series Friday, and Rudolph is said to have retreated to her trailer, unwilling to return to work.

The nearly 12,000-member writers guild began striking Tuesday as their contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expired. Both sides have been...

How Maya Rudolph Created a ‘Soul-Searching’ Billionaire Going Through a Life Crisis in ‘Loot’
Maya Rudolph in Loot (2022)
“Loot” co-creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang had only one person in mind to star when they created their Apple TV+ comedy about a newly minted female billionaire navigating her tabloid-catnip divorce and venturing to rebrand as a philanthropist: Maya Rudolph. And they were right on the money with the “Saturday Night Live” alum, who plays the obscenely wealthy Molly Novak. Rudolph understands the character beyond her “colorful elements”, seeing her instead as a “vulnerable” woman who must navigate through a “transitional period” in her life, she told TheWrap Monday as she discussed the Season 1 finale.

“I feel like they set Molly up for endless, limitless possibilities, which is, to me, the best spirit of this show and the joy of playing this character,” Rudolph said. “The money gives her the resources to feel like anything is possible, but I think when you pair that with someone having a real...

‘Loot’ Co-creator Matt Hubbard on Crafting a Female Billionaire ‘Trying to Push Herself Outside’ of Uber-rich Bubble in Season 1
Maya Rudolph in Loot (2022)
Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the “Loot” Season 1 finale, “The Silver Moon Summit.”

When creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang came up with their Apple TV+ billionaire spoof series “Loot,” they weren’t looking to be apologists for the ultra-wealthy. In trying to craft a “juicy” role for Maya Rudolph, they were instead inspired to explore “how much of an outsize effect people with that level of money have on all of our lives.”

The quasi-workplace comedy — which follows newly divorced Molly Novak (Rudolph), who is forced to start anew with 87 billion after unearthing her tech mogul husband’s infidelity — has been dancing around the ethical concerns of billionairedom from its genesis. Throughout the series, she tries to contribute to her charity foundation in a meaningful way in her attempts to course-correct for her inordinate capital. However, after a botched water machine demonstration for the fellow uber-wealthy in the finale,...
