The Adult Animation Spotlight panel between Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim at Annecy Animation Festival summarized a number of titles in the overlap between the two studios, including the Anderson Entertainment collaboration “Hit Squad.”
The presentation was lead by Peter Girardi, EVP of Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen.
The highlight of the session, however, turned on discussion of “Heist Safari,” an animated action comedy from director Genndy Tartakovsky, who also attended the festival with his first feature, “Fixed,” s Sony Pictures Animation movie acquired by Netflix.
Tartavoksky had pitched “Heist Safari” live at last year’s edition of the festival to Ouweleen. During this spotlight panel, the pair shed a little more light on the new series from the “Samurai Jack” creator, adding a few more details of the series, which follows three frogs, all brothers, as they attempt to rob a bank.

Ok K.O.'s creator breaks down how the Sonic team-up episode was written, how Sega to agreed to it, and more in this in-depth interview.
Ok K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes is, without question, one of the most cartoony cartoons on air. While some animated series have skewed more towards dramatic long running plotlines, Ok K.O.! has embraced just how much of a cartoon it is. It’s wacky, zany, and delights in referencing other cartoons.
It proudly wears its influences on its sleeve and one of those is Sonic The Hedgehog. The long running video game franchise has had multiple animated series over the years and Ok K.O.! creator Ian Jones-Quartey (and much of the series’ crew) count some of these as big influences on the series.

Creator Ian Jones-Quartey reveals just how much Sonic influenced Ok K.O. before the two series team up!
Ok K.O! Let’s Be Heroes won’t slow down with its team-ups! The zany Cartoon Network series has teamed up with Captain Planet and Ghoul School but it’s about the meet the fastest thing alive. This Sunday, August 4th at 4:45Pm, Ko will team-up with the famous video game characters Sonic and Tails!
For Ok K.O. creator Ian Jones-Quartey, this was a dream come true. He’s been a Sonic the Hedgehog fan since his youth and the wacky 90’s series The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was a big inspiration on Ok K.O.
“It’s very wacky and kind of a low rent Bugs Bunny,” explains Jones-Quartey. “It has very expressive and funny drawings. It does so much just for a laugh.

With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.
The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.
The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. Creator Rebecca Sugar and the writing/directing team that includes Ian Jones-Quartey, Joseph D. Johnston, Kat Morris, Matt Burnett, Ben Levin and the fantastic cast deliver mature, complex material that most adult-oriented series wouldn't dare attempt while wrapping it in a candy-coated shell that's accessible to kids and adults alike. It's astounding just how solid Steven Universe has been throughout its run and just how much better it continues to get even in …...

Steven Universe is one of our favorite cartoons ever and so we were really excited to get to interview them at Comic Con.
We talked to Zach Callison (who is not only the voice of Steven, but also of Prince James in Sofia the First), Ian Jones-Quartey (storyboarded/animator), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl….who Anya has been singing along to since she was 2 years old — no kidding, Deedee was Jasmine in the Aladdin Spectacular at Disney’s California Adventure), Estelle (Garnet), and Rebecca Sugar, the show’s composer & creator, who incidentally was shattering glass ceilings as the first woman to independently create a series for Cartoon Network! What’s really cool about Rebecca, as you’ll find out in our interview is that she’s a bit of a musical theatre geek like us. She not only got a song idea from Sweeney Todd, but she quotes Bob Fosse too.

“Do you know how many children I see every day who’ve cut off their faces playing with swords? None! Because they all have parents who love them and who don’t let them play around with deadly weapons like some sort of gang member!”
Strong art direction can make even a mediocre episode of Steven Universe sing, and while ‘Nightmare Hospital’ offers thin plot and implausible characterization, it also dishes out one of the most visually immersive episodes the series has done to date. The long, warped corridors of the titular hospital buzz with uneven fluorescent lighting while rapid footsteps echo through the gloom. Greens, browns, beiges, and greys blend into an inhospitable but uncomfortably naturalistic palette that makes everyone look simultaneously ill and like an interloper in a hushed mausoleum. Hallways stretch on forever, distorted by perspective. Figures rush through enormous spaces as though nervous about lingering too long.
