Jacob Elordi’s performance in The Narrow Road Into the Deep North earned a last-minute shift onto the Primetime Emmy ballot, positioning the five-part Australian drama against heavyweight contenders in limited-series categories. Sony Pictures Television and Prime Video submitted the show just before the Television Academy’s May 8 deadline, moving it from the International branch into contention for Best Limited or Anthology Series, Lead Actor (Elordi), Directing (Justin Kurzel) and Writing (Shaun Grant).

Adapted from Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize–winning novel, The Narrow Road Into the Deep North follows an Australian surgeon before and after World War II. Elordi portrays the younger version of a doctor whose Pow experience is haunted by memories of a wartime affair (Odessa Young) and revisited decades later by Ciarán Hinds. Since its April 18 release on Prime Video, the series has achieved a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating, edging past Netflix’s British import Adolescence.

Outer Dark is a film that is already brewing much hype as the Cannes market as it is an adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel and it will now sport two rising stars as the main leads. According to Deadline, Jacob Elordi of Saltburn and Priscilla has been tapped to star in the film with Nosferatu‘s Lily-Rose Depp. The original Cormac McCarthy novel has been described as a “dark fairytale,” and the screen adaptation is set to be the English-language debut of the Oscar-winning filmmaker Laszlo Nemes, known for Son of Saul.

Per Deadline, the description of the plot reads, “Outer Dark is set in Appalachia during the Great Depression and tells of a young woman who bears her brother’s baby. The brother leaves the nameless infant in the woods to die, but tells his sister that the newborn died of natural causes and had to be buried.

A24 and Participant have set an adaptation of “Blknws,” based on the groundbreaking video exhibition by video artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph.

Joseph will make his feature directorial debut with the project, with cinematographer Bradford Young on board to lens the feature. Participant will lead production and co-finance alongside A24, who will also handle worldwide distribution. Executive Producers are Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren, while Joseph will produce the film alongside Onye Anyanwu, Amy Greenleaf and Nicolas Gonda.

A24 and Participant teased news of the project, by posting a teaser, which read “coming soon” to social media. Further details on the project, including a release date will are yet to be revealed.

A24 and Participant are teaming with music video auteur and artist Kahlil Joseph to adapt his video art installation “Blknws” into a feature film.

Joseph will make his directorial debut on the film that’s based on his video exhibition of the same name that is described as a conceptual news program and newscast blurring the lines between art, reporting, entrepreneurship and cultural critique.

Co-produced by the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (Land), “Blknws” was presented as part of “Made in LA 2020: a version” and was displayed at 10 different venues and locations across Los Angeles, concluding with the Hammer Museum. The installation has two side-by-side TVs that show a looped video montage of Black subjects both past and present.

Estonia’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival will open on November 16 with the world premiere of Awaken, the feature debut of Tom Lowe which includes Terrence Malick amongst its executive producers.

So, they sent him off to capture some of the most extraordinary shots in the film, as molten lava bursts up under the ocean. One cameraman took the IMAX camera so close to exploding magma that his boots melted.

Backed by an original National Geographic Society grant, IMAX, foreign sales company Wild Bunch and indie distributor Broad Green (which began financing and releasing Malick’s films in 2014) the movie takes two forms.

Being that Terrence Malick isn’t necessarily available for the career-spanning interview — or even a soundbite — the next best thing for learning more about his creative process comes from those that work closest with him in development: the producers. Before his Christian Bale-led drama Knight of Cups enters a limited release this Friday, I had the chance to speak with Sarah Green, Nicolas Gonda, and Ken Kao

While Green has worked with Malick since 2005’s The New World and Gonda came onboard with The Tree of Life, Knight of Cups marks the first collaboration with Kao, who has also executive-produced this year’s The Nice Guys and Silence. It was a delight to discuss their first experiences seeing a film from Malick, his creative process, what’s in store for the upcoming, Austin-set Weightless, witnessing the collaboration between Malick, Emmanuel Lubezki, and Jack Fisk, and more. The 6th Annual Napa Valley Film Festival (Nvff) taking place November 9 - 13, 2016 is now accepting film submissions. Nvff showcases an outstanding presentation of independent filmmaking while also building a strong sense of community around the art of visual storytelling. The ultimate celebration of the best films and engaging filmmakers, accompanied by Napa Valley’s world-class food, wine and hospitality, Nvff is a five-day immersive experience that annually lights up the gloriously scenic towns of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga.

Nvff welcomes submissions of any genre and will be selecting approximately 100 new independent films to be programmed alongside a dozen or so awards season contending films, presented courtesy of Nvff’s many studio partners. Submission categories include narrative features and shorts, documentary features and shorts, and short features (films with running times between 20 and 50 minutes). Organizers are looking for films that will best entertain, inspire, educate and intrigue audiences.

All of the films programmed from submissions are eligible for Audience Awards. Audience Awards presented each year include: Favorite Narrative Feature, Favorite Narrative Short, Favorite Documentary Feature, Favorite Documentary Short, Favorite Short Feature, Favorite Actress and Favorite Actor. The festival also offers a variety of Juried Awards. The jurors for 2016 will be announced at a later date. Three jurors will serve on each of the five juries: Narrative Features, Documentary Features, Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts, and The Lounge (a collection of bolder, edgier films curated from submissions). All juried and audience awards will be presented at an exciting Awards Ceremony on Nvff’s Closing Night, Sunday, November 13, 2016. All award winners will take home signed collectible magnums and/or double magnums of wine from Nvff’s Vintner Circle winery partners.

Feature length films (50 minutes or longer) can be programmed in one of the following sections: Narrative or Documentary Features Competition (U.S. productions only), The Lounge (foreign and domestic productions), or Special Presentations (foreign and domestic productions). An example of a curated film selection from Nvff’s 2014 Special Presentations was the Latino Spotlight, composed of three feature length films and four short films, all in Spanish language and/or dealing with Latino culture and heritage. Each film in the Special Presentations component of the program is up for Audience Awards.

Short films (narrative and documentary, under 20 minutes of running time) are programmed in curated collections. Shorts may be selected for the Narrative or Documentary Shorts competitions, for The Lounge, or as part of Special Presentations. Short Features (running times between 20 and 50 minutes) play in curated collections of 2-3 films.

The 20 films in Nvff’s U.S. feature competition categories (10 each) vie for the titles of Best Narrative Feature and Best Documentary Feature (as determined by our prestigious juries). Each award comes with a $10,000 cash prizes presented by Meadowood Napa Valley. The 20 directors of these films also participate in Nvff’s unique Artists-in-Residence program that includes a six-night stay at Meadowood Napa Valley, master classes with industry leaders, networking with and learning from each other, pairing with top festival patrons at lavish receptions and winemaker dinners, and enjoying the world-class hospitality of one of wine country’s most beautiful resorts. Leave it up to Terrence Malick — supposedly a main source of inspiration for Star Wars: The Force Awakens — to put his actors in the moment. “Even when they were actors, Terry would still tell me they weren’t,” Christian Bale tells Standard, recounting an experience during Knight of Cups. “We were filming in a strip club, and Teresa Palmer’s there in her little silver hotpants and I’m asking her how long she’d been dancing for? It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

The Earth Network, Abramorama, GrindTV, Tugg and Vimeo are collaborating on the Us theatrical release of The Search For Freedom, a documentary produced by The Earth Network.

The film will receive a one-day theatrical release on June 10 in more than 75 theatres nationwide.

Tugg will enable encore screenings throughout June and July.

eOne and Universal are releasing The Search For Freedom on VOD in Canada and the rest of the world on August 10.

Imax Corporation has revealed its latest distribution play via its $50m war chest to finance original film, partnering with Broad Green Pictures to join Sophisticated Films and Wild Bunch on Terrence Malick’s Voyage Of Time.

Broad Green gets the first opportunity to distribute the feature version in North America following an exclusive IMAX release.

Wild Bunch represents international sales on Voyage, in which Malick sets out to chronicle the entirety of time. The auteur is working first in the IMAX format for a 40-minute version that Brad Pitt narrates before shifting his focus to a 35mm feature-length version with narration by Cate Blanchett.

Their new multi-million dollar Event Cinema Fund will provide capital, expertise, and other resources for select films that promote positive discussion and community-building. The Berlin Film Festival this morning announced that Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups would world premiere in competition there in February, offering up the most recent piece of official intel on the secrecy-shrouded film. A few short hours later, our cup just about runneth over with new information. FilmNation Entertainment has released the first trailer for the movie which stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman. (Watch it above).

We already knew the story dealt with temptations, celebrity, and excess. Now, we’ve gotten a look at Bale’s lead character, Rick, as he navigates those facets of the Hollywood fast-life, questioning who he’s become. We also have a somewhat cryptic synopsis to go with the fresh images: “Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup.

Gabriel and Daniel Hammond’s ambitious finance, production and distribution upstart has led a Series A investment round in the cinema-on-demand player.

An organization known for crowdfunding wants to help indie film producers distribute their films.  Seed&Spark has teamed up with Tugg, a website that lets people choose the movies that play in their local cinema, on a touring seminar that teaches producers how get their films from development to festivals to local movie theaters. The seminar, which is being offered free of charge at upcoming film festivals in Hollywood, Las Vegas, Vancouver, and Austin, is more about developing an audience than simply making a buck. France's Wild Bunch has picked up world sales rights to Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time, a documentary project the Tree of Life filmmaker has been working on for the past 30 years. Berlin-based Sophisticated Films is producing the film together with The Tree of Life production team, including Brad Pitt, Grant Hill, Dede Gardner, Nicolas Gonda, Sarah Green and Bill Pohlad. The recent Berlin world premiere from Terence Malick’s longtime collaborator Aj Edwards premiered in Sundance and screened in Berlin.

Amplify will release the impressionistic black and white tale of Abraham Lincoln’s early childhood theatrically in autumn followed by VOD and home video release in early 2015.

Edwards worked as an editor on Malick’s The New World, second unit director and editor on The Tree Of Life, To The Wonder, and the upcoming Knight Of Cups.

“I am humbled by the passion Amplify has shown for The Better Angels since its premiere,” said Edwards, who spoke to Screendaily about the film shortly before its Sundance world premiere. “Our team is so glad this great company will be shepherding our film.”

To consider one’s self a fan of Terrence Malick’s oeuvres is, for lack of a better term, cinephile martyrdom. As one of the two current projects that should be released this year (how many times have we said this), the formerly titled Lawless sounds like a Grand Slam in terms of musical acts assisting a romantic backdrop of a good looking set of actors and actresses (they’ll certainly look lush with Emmanuel Lubezki assisting in the photography) this mostly scriptless project might turn out to be a first-cousin comparison the largely dismissed To the Wonder.

Ewan McGregor is to star in writer-director Rodrigo Garcia’s drama Last Days In The Desert, which is due to shoot from this month.

Tye Sheridan, Ciaran Hinds and Ayelet Zurer will star alongside McGregor in the Mockingbird Pictures and Division Films production.

The film follows a holy man and a demon - both roles played by McGregor - on a journey through the desert. An encounter with a family struggling to survive in this harsh environment forces the holy man to confront his own fate.

The film is produced by Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis of Mockingbird Pictures along with Wicks Walker. Walker and Nicolas Gonda collaborated to finance the picture, via Walker’s Division Films and Nicolas Gonda’s recently launched Ironwood Films, in association with Aspiration Media and New Balloon.
