The bonkers animation of Demon Slayer shines the brightest when the characters swing their swords. Their movements might become difficult to track, but the attention to detail in the animation is apparent in every frame. The fight between Tengen and Gyutaro exemplifies this quite well. However, that fight also stands out for how well it explores Tengen’s character.

A Hashira who’s known for his strength didn’t shy away from asking for help. He called out to Tanjiro when he saw his wives in danger. The desperation, the helplessness, and the care raised the stakes. That made every attack more impactful, making the fight one of the best. As great as this fight truly was, it still has a long way to go to surpass Rengoku’s final fight in the series.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is definitely a vibe, with a compelling storyline, Ufotable’s insane animation, and characters you will not forget. If you are invested in Tanjiro Kamado’s mission to save his demon sister Nezuko, then the Hashira from the elite Demon Slayer Corps are a big reason for that.

But when we first meet the Hashira, they aren’t exactly welcoming and warm. So what gives? It is because they aren’t those cliche anime mentors who are all wise and flawless.

Demon Slayer stans can’t stop discussing how Koyoharu Gotouge made these mentors unique by making them a little unlikable at first, showing their messy quirks. And it all makes them real, human characters that it is impossible not to root for.

Hashira’s first impressions? Not the best

The thing is, when the Hashira came on the scene in Episode 22, they’re not exactly winning us over.

There’s massive popularity, and then there’s everything Demon Slayer has achieved with its glorious animation and exciting fights. Whether it’s die-hard anime fans or those who are barely familiar with the medium, Tanjiro and his story can hook anyone and everyone. Despite the extraordinary success, it’s a popular belief that the animanga series isn’t as narratively sound as one would expect.

Compared to the animation or the characters, the story isn’t as gripping. It’s straightforward and makes one question if the series is overrated, as many say. No matter which side of the argument you’re on, the finale of the Hashira Training Arc compels you to believe that Demon Slayer has great writing. Maybe not consistently, but the story doesn’t disappoint when it truly matters.

Demon Slayer has to be one of the biggest highlights in the anime industry when it comes to writing emotionally driven fight scenes. Usually, all the characters involved in any given fight get their storylines explained well. But this wasn’t the case with Inosuke. For some reason, the narrative felt quite flat as it used a cheap plot convenience just to save our Boar Boy.

It all happened during the Tengen vs. Gyutaro fight. Yes, you might have already guessed which scene I’m talking about exactly. While the fight as a whole was arguably the best the series has to offer, this one fatal mistake by the creators still left me bamboozled. I mean, there must have been other ways to save Inosuke, right, rather than simply saying he shifted his organs?

Given the series' popularity, it was an obvious choice for CyberConnect2 and Arc System Works to make a follow-up to its 2021 fighting video game, Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles. The second game in the series has now released a new trailer, showing off the Swordsmith Village Arc from the story mode of the game, which is set to release in North America on Aug. 5, 2025.

We can all agree that Demon Slayer is a straight-up phenomenon! Watching Tanjiro save Nezuko and fight Muzan freaking hit us hard while those exquisite visuals are equally great. But even though Tanjiro is pivotal to the story, it is the Hashira who somehow steal the spotlight whenever they show up.

And the reason? They are totally badass demon slayers, made even cooler by their Breathing Styles and tragic pasts. We get to see moments like Rengoku’s fiery aura and Shinobu’s sneaky revenge.

But those are just quick flashbacks, and we need more! So, a spinoff would broaden the world of Demon Slayer, while allowing the Hashira to shine, and not just be members of Tanjiro’s crew.

Their backstories deserve more development

Demon Slayer might be a short series compared to the more famous ones, but the sheer amount of plot lines Koyoharu Gotouge has included says otherwise. Many characters I wanted them to explore further were inevitably left behind, giving space for the main characters who will naturally shine more.

The wasted potential of some of these characters, however, is downright criminal. A famous example of this was Doma. When we heard about his cult, I believed it would become an arc of its own in Demon Slayer, but nothing came out of that piece of information. He’s barely seen otherwise, a pattern we witness with other characters.

When confronted with the question of which character is the most underutilized in Demon Slayer, the most common answer was the members of the Butterfly Mansion, specifically Kanae Kocho and Kanao Tsuyuri. While Shinobu got the spotlight, the rest had no solid purpose in the storyline.

In the Demon Slayer universe, fans are accustomed to big and flashy fights, jaw-droppingly intense animation, and powerful characters with just as captivating backstories. But sometimes, it’s the side characters—the ones with barely any screen time who end up leaving the biggest impressions.

And that’s exactly the case with Kanae Kocho, the older sister of Shinobu and the former Flower Hashira. Kanae is, without a doubt, one of the kindest and most humane characters in all of Demon Slayer.

Characters like Rengoku steal a lot of screen time, deservedly so, but Kanae, who’s clearly had “fan favorite” written all over her, did not get anywhere near the attention she deserved. It felt like her death was the only thing that merited time, and the narrative quickly switched focus onto Shinobu, Kanae’s sister.

Demon Slayer often gets flak for being solely carried by its animation, which isn’t true at all, especially when we consider other aspects of the series. The animation is superb, yes, but there are other charms as well. It is true for its gripping storyline, engaging fights, and well-written characters.

We don’t give Demon Slayer enough credit for its fleshed-out and layered characters, be they demons or Hashiras. Gotouge went the extra mile with characterization. Their backstories and entire development within the story are well-thought-out however, this also extends to the mangaka’s writing of female characters.

From their backstories to their personalities, women exist beyond the frontiers of conventional representation in the series. They’re not restricted to the therapist, mother, and maid archetype; there’s more to it. The characterization itself is a critical lens into the shonen world through the mangaka’s view.

Glorious animation is the only thing that precedes Nezuko’s popularity in a discussion about Demon Slayer. She is the face of the animanga series, and it’s due to her cuteness. Every time she turns into the chibi version of herself, and flutters around like a butterfly, one can’t help but find her adorable.

However, in a world where demons threaten mankind, I can’t help but wonder how come Nezuko is so useless. There are some moments where she saves Tanjiro and the others, but for the most part, she serves no purpose in the series. It makes me question her popularity every time I look at the roster of cool characters.

There’s one possibility that explains Nezuko’s underwhelming character arc and her popularity. It seems like most fans have come to the same conclusion about her character arc.

Fans have been waiting for the Infinity Castle Arc to be adapted on screen, and the first movie of its trilogy will be released soon. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—The Movie: Infinity Castle is set to hit theatres in July. It will be released in August and September, depending on the region.

Seasoned fans of Demon Slayer were worried that Ufotable was taking advantage of the series’ popularity, similar to what happened with Mappa and Attack on Titan. The final season kept getting extended, ruining all the anticipation for its ending.

As for his interactions with humans, he’s more condescending and considers them inferior. The best thing to expect from the character is nothing. Aniplex president Atsuhiro Iwakami, credited as one of the planners of the now-smash-hit Demon Slayer anime franchise, says he's hopeful that the upcoming Infinity Castle will beat its previous overseas record.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) released its recent interview with production company Aniplex's Iwakami, who shared his optimism that the upcoming Infinity Castle film will be the highest-grossing film with overseas fans. Takara Tomy's massively popular Licca-chan doll series -- frequently referred to as Japan's version of Barbie -- has united with the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime series for a brand-new limited-edition figure.

Takara Tomy announced the release of a Licca-chan doll set inspired by the popular Demon Slayer anime series. Via Oricon, the Demon Slayer x Licca-chan Dx Haori Set will be released on a made-to-order basis in early July 2025. Seven haori -- traditional Japanese jackets worn by the Demon Slayer Corps members -- and other accessories will be released for the doll, inspired by the characters Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Giyu Tomioka, Shinobu Kocho, Kyojuro Rengoku, Obanai Iguro and Gyomei Himejima. The official Aniplex Japanese YouTube channel's live stream for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba revealed that the Infinity Castle film trilogy will premiere in 2025. A new trailer was also unveiled, featuring Tanjiro Kamado as well as the Hashira.
