10 best ‘Hacks’ episodes so far, ranked

Through four seasons, Hacks has become of one of the defining — and one of the funniest — shows of the decade. Created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, the Max comedy following stand-up legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her complicated relationship with a young comedy writer, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), has delivered some certified bangers that are hilarious, heartwarming, incisive, and absolutely shocking, sometimes all at once. Just as shocking? Its win for Best Comedy Series in 2024 over The Bear, a surprising but wholly deserved victory for its better-than-ever third season. Not as surprising? Smart winning her third Best Comedy Actress Emmy, remaining undefeated for the show.

Hacks, which also stars Downs, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Megan Stalter, Rose Abdoo, and Mark Indelicato, just concluded its fourth season with an ending that sets the show on a new course once again.

As it preps for its fifth season, which...

"Everybody Involved Would Jump at the Chance": Michael Urie Is More Than Ready for an 'Ugly Betty' Revival
Image
In the age of reboots and revivals, fans are yet to see one of their favorite shows be resuscitated. Ugly Betty first premiered on ABC in 2006, and it wouldn't be out of place if it was brought back like several other shows have. But what do the series alumni think about it? During the TV Fest in Newport Beach, in which his Shrinking costar Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) received an award, Michael Urie (Maestro) was happy to talk about Ugly Betty with Collider for a couple of minutes.

During the interview, Urie suggested to Collider's Aidan Kelley that Ugly Betty would be an interesting show to reboot because the original's themes are now as relevant as ever. He also mentioned what he would like to see if the revival indeed happened and mentioned who he thinks would return for more episodes.

"I feel like the show was...

Comedy TV Writers on the Importance of Filming in Los Angeles, Sharing Soundstages and the Power of the Will They/Won’t They Relationship
Image
For “Nobody Wants This” creator/executive producer Erin Foster, when it came time to figure out where to shoot her Netflix comedy “Nobody Wants This,” she had some leverage in her back pocket: Star Kristen Bell.

“Shooting in L.A. is hard and really expensive,” Foster told the audience on Thursday at Variety’s A Night in the Writers Room event. “We were only able to shoot in L.A. because Kristen Bell has kids here that are in school here. And she’s like, ‘I won’t shoot anywhere else.’”

Foster said Netflix and 20th TV, which is behind “Nobody Wants This,” quickly agreed. “They’re like, ‘well, then we’re shooting where you want to shoot,’” she told the A Night in the Writers’ Room audience. “We got very lucky that she wants to be home with her kids. She wants to come to work, she wants to live in LA.

The Creators of ‘Hacks’ Want To Know Which TV You Own
Image
“Hacks” is now four seasons into an established comedy rhythm, even as it continues to find new ways to complicate the dynamic between standup legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). But that certainly doesn’t mean making the show has gotten easy or expected.

Co-creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky have always been pretty visual writers, with a clear sense of what they want, but they search with the tirelessness of Damian’s (Mark Indelicato) quest for coyote-warding bear piss to sculpt exactly the right comedy moments. So while they often aren’t “finding the show” in the edit in a wholesale way, they are searching every frame for what beat is the funniest.

“We do like to watch pretty much every take of everything. That is always going to be the thing we like to do,” Aniello told IndieWire on...

Hacks season 5 might not be the final season despite five-season plan
Image
HBO Max picked up a fifth season of the Emmy-winning Hacks, one day before the season 4 finale. But could this be the last we see of Deborah and Ava? Well, the showrunners have been tight-lipped about the future of the acclaimed comedy, but the writers have previously insisted that the comedy would end after five seasons.

Recently, Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs addressed the future of the hit comedy during a Variety round table. Downs revealed the writers were currently working on the fifth season and waiting to see how many more episodes they needed to tell their story.

“The final scene of the final episode has been in our minds since 2015, and we’re excited to get there. But that may take more episodes than we can fit in the season. So the truth is that we don’t know,” Downs admitted.

‘Hacks’ Renewed for Fifth Season at Max
Image
Hacks is entering the record books at Max.

The streamer has renewed the series for a fifth season, which will make Hacks the longest-running live-action show in Max’s (admittedly not very long) history. Series creators and showrunnners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky announced the renewal Tuesday evening at an Emmy FYC screening in Los Angeles.

The pickup for the Emmy-winning comedy from Universal Television comes two days before its fourth season finale. The current season has seen Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) realize her dream of hosting a late-night talk show — though with more strings attached than she would like — with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) as her head writer.

Hacks premiered in May 2021, when the streaming service where it runs was known as HBO Max. It has continued since the platform changed its name to Max in April 2023 — and with the renewal, season five will stream on...

‘Hacks’ Renewed for Season 5 Ahead of Season 4 Finale
Image
Max is doubling down on Deborah Vance. The streamer renewed its Emmy-winning comedy “Hacks” for a fifth season on Tuesday ahead of its Season 4 finale.

The comedy’s creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky learned of the renewal news last week.

“We’re thrilled to be able to make a fifth season of a comedy,” Downs told TheWrap in an interview that also included Aniello and Statsky. “It is a very rare thing now, which we wish weren’t the case. But we don’t take for granted how fortunate we are to get to do it. We were really excited because we’ve always known where we want the story to conclude, and so to be able to continue to build towards that is so satisfying.”

It’s no surprise that Max renewed “Hacks.” So far, the comedy has been nominated for 48 Primetime Emmys. The series...

Fans Are Turning on ‘Hacks’ as Season 4 Earns Alarmingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Image
The first two episodes of Hacks Season 4 debuted on Max at the start of last month, and while general audiences were much higher on the series at the start, opinions have begun to shift. With six episodes under its belt and only four more remaining in Season 4, Hacks has dropped to a series-low 63% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This falls well below the 89% score earned in Season 1 and the 90% scores from Seasons 2 and 3. However, while critical opinion on the show has waned slightly, it’s nowhere near the drop-off that general audiences have seen. Hacks Season 4 still has a 97% rating from critics on the aggregate site, just a touch below the 100% earned in the first two seasons and the 98% from Season 3.

Hacks has aired 33 episodes now, halfway through its fourth season, and only three stars have managed to earn a spot in every single entry. Leading the charge are Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hacks Season 4, Episode 4, “I Love LA.”] Hacks‘ latest episode, “I Love LA,” led Deborah (Jean Smart) and her right-hand man Damien (Mark Indelicato) to the club for an eventful night out in celebration of her late-night show’s premiere. While Deborah waited for the evening broadcast of her first episode taping, she attended dinner to enjoy it alongside colleagues like Winnie (Helen Hunt) and musical guest Randy Newman, but after she was stood up, she turned to Damien for company. The young man was quite obviously nervous sharing the table with his boss, but as the conversation progressed, he revealed his own hardships about acclimating to Los Angeles and suggested that if Deborah accompanied him to the club would do wonders for his social life. And so, Deborah joined Damien at the club and had such a good time that she stayed long after he’d left. Her fun was abruptly ended,...

Following last week's ill-fated trip to Las Vegas for a writers' retreat, Hacks season 4 episode 4 is all systems go on final preparations for Deborah's late night show. The monologues and bits have been written, the wigs have been sewn, the stage has been set, and all that's left to do is run through the first taping in a dress rehearsal. But consummate professional Deborah freezes during her monologue. Is the pressure finally getting to her?

Deborah assumes and insists that she's having a cardiac event. She won't hear anyone else's consideration that she could be having a panic attack due to stage fright. Deborah Vance doesn't get stage fright. A heart attack is much easier for her to understand rather than the vague concept of fear-induced anxiety. "I Was So Focused On Myself”: Michael Urie Regrets How He "Slept On" His ‘Ugly Betty’ Co-Stars
Image
Next year, Ugly Betty will celebrate its 20th anniversary. The surprise hit ABC series was a pioneer in several aspects of network television, but some aspects went relatively unnoticed for many years. Michael Urie (Shrinking) and Becki Newton (The Lincoln Lawyer) hosted a podcast about the series, way before podcasts were even a thing. Now, the duo has returned with the rewatch podcast Still Ugly, where they revisit each episode and offer their perspective. In a new interview with Collider's Michael Zimmerman, Urie and Newton revealed they are noticing many things they missed during filming.

During the interview, Urie admitted to Zimmerman that he's "embarrassed" to say that he "slept on" his co-stars' performances because he was so focused on himself and doing a good job that he missed the nuances of several people that he shared scenes with. He called America Ferrera (Barbie) "amazing and brilliant" and mentioned several cast members,...

“Marc and Amanda Are Still Together”: This Is What an ‘Ugly Betty’ Reboot Would Look Like, According to Michael Urie and Becki Newton
Image
The success of the first two seasons of Ugly Betty back in the early aughts created a passionate fan base that still loves the series to this day despite its shortcomings. You can ask any fan of the show, and most of them will tell you that one of the best things about it was the comedic duo formed by Marc (Michael Urie) and Amanda (Becki Newton). During a new interview with Collider's Michael Zimmerman to promote their rewatch podcastStill Ugly, the two actors talked about their experience in the series and tried to imagine what a reboot would look like today.

We can't ignore that Ugly Betty was a product of its time. In the context of the series, Marc and Amanda worked in an environment in which bullying was not only allowed but encouraged. However, Urie and Newton found a way to make it funny and more...

“It’s Not Cringey To Look Back On”: ‘Ugly Betty’ Stars Are Proud the Show Holds Up 20 Years Later
Image
Back when Ugly Betty started airing its first episodes, network TV was a different world. At the same time, TV writers were pushing for change in new series, and some great titles came of it. In Ugly Betty's case, the comedy-drama series was a trailblazer in many ways, especially when it came to representation. In a new interview with Collider's Michael Zimmerman, stars Michael Urie (Shrinking) and Becki Newton (The Lincoln Lawyer) recently spoke about how well the series aged.

Newton and Urie are hosting an Ugly Betty rewatch podcast called Still Ugly, which is why they are revisiting all the episodes almost 20 years after they first aired. The duo spoke to Zimmerman about their perception of the story and emphasized that, even though the series is very much a product of its time, there are still many things that hold up when you look back on it.

‘She’s the He’ Review: An Endearing Debut Takes on Coming Out While Coming of Age
Image
It doesn’t take long for the action in Siobhan McCarthy’s charming directorial debut, She’s the He, to kick off. The film, which premiered at SXSW, opens with two friends scheming to get laid before they graduate from high school. Their libidinous preoccupations, like those of the protagonists of Superbad, Booksmart and more recently Bottoms, are familiar. But unlike their predecessors, Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich) aren’t just considered losers by the vague standards of a rigidly stratified student body. Everyone also thinks they are gay and dating each other.

To change their reputation, the pair decide to come out as trans. The logic behind this plan doesn’t completely hold up, but the execution leads to an entertaining and endearing coming-of-age drama.

For the most part, She’s the He follows the beats of a typical comedic bildungsroman, but McCarthy also finds distinctive ways into the genre.

“We’re Building Up the World”: ‘Hacks’ Showrunners Have an Enthusiastic Response To Demand for a Kayla and Jimmy Spin-Off
Image
Hacksis about to return to television, but the world of Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) might expand beyond what fans have already seen so far. During a recent interview, the showrunners behind the successful comedy series toyed around with the idea of producing a spin-off focused on two of the most popular supporting characters from the production. Kayla (Megan Stalter) and Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) have been working very hard for every one of their clients to become a success. Here's what the actor behind Jimmy (and one of the showrunners behind Hacks) had to say about a spin-off focused on the two entertainment representatives:

"We shot in this cement building here in L.A. and then we reconstructed it on a stage, so we do have a standing set (for the spin-off)."

Hacks co-showrunner Lucia Aniello entered the conversation with another character that could appear in the potential project: "We’re ready,...

‘Hacks’ Season 4 Review: Max Series Tackles Late Night in Hilariously Vicious Return
Image
“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl?”

When last we left our fateful antiheroes Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), Ava had just confronted her nemesis/boss about her role as head writer on Deborah’s upcoming late night show. A role that was promised to her after years of torment, unruly comedy tours, harmful attacks and damn good jokes. Ava saw an opportunity to grab life by the balls and hoist herself up the corporate ladder.

Deborah has dreamt of hosting the coveted 11:30 p.m. late night timeslot since her early stand-up days, but she never imagined that Ava would have dreams of her own. Blackmail aside, their toxic relationship has seen better days, just as the two see their individual careers linked together in a warped juxtaposition of success and frustration. The push-and-pull of their characters’ chemistry keeps “Hacks” interesting and a fun-filled ride to watch.

"I wasn't surprised — we deserved it."

That's how Jean Smart described her reaction to Hacks winning Best Comedy Series at last year's Emmy Awards. Downs (who also stars). Variety's Michael Schneider moderated the Q&a panel, which took place after the world premiere screening of the first two episodes of Season 4.
