Exclusive: Dark Star Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights to The Wilderness, a thriller written and directed by Spencer King (Nickels) and produced by Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Amy Berg (Deliver Us From Evil).

The film stars Hunter Doohan (Wednesday), who also serves as a producer, with Lamar Johnson (The Last of Us), Sam Jaeger (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear). Rounding out the cast are Matt Gomez-Hidaka (Eddington), Liana Liberato (Scream), Sean Avery (Oppenheimer), Vinessa Shaw (Hocus Pocus) and James Le Gros (Drugstore Cowboy).

The film’s synopsis reads: A group of troubled teenage boys are kidnapped from their homes and taken deep into the unforgiving Utah desert, where they are forced into a brutal and secretive Wilderness Therapy program. With no contact with the outside world, their only way home is to earn the approval of the enigmatic program director, whose motives are far from therapeutic.

Elias Voit might be a transformed man (we hope this is the case for real), but his minions are still running rogue in Criminal Minds: Evolution. Zach Gilford, the actor who has so compellingly brought the deranged character to life since the reboot's inception, has revealed he will help steer Voit's arc this season, behind the scenes. Gilford is set to direct an upcoming episode of the crime procedural, but this won't be his first time performing off-screen duties on the series. Gilford first directed Season 2, Episode 8, "North Star," parts of which centered around the Bau unraveling further details about Voit's sinister Sicarius network.

Several episodes later, the activities of the deadly network continue to keep the Bau busy, even though their leader has now seemingly turned a new leaf. The previous episode, "The Brutal Man," sees Gilford agreeing to work with the Bau to crack down on every last member of the network.

All good stories must come to an end. Peacock has trimmed its original programming, canceling Based on a True Story after two seasons.

Per Deadline, despite earning largely positive reviews from critics, Based on a True Story will not return for a third season on Peacock. Created by Craig Rosenberg, the dark comedy thriller series is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events. Both seasons follow married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Cuoco and Chris Messina respectively, as they capitalize on America's growing obsession with true crime by launching a podcast with serial killer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). The second, and now final, season of eight episodes was released in its entirety on Peacock back in November 2024.

The series, which first premiered in June 2023, starred Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato and more. Season two debuted in November 2024.

Mr Throwback starred Stephen Curry, Adam Pally and Ego Nwodim, and followed a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA legend Stephen Curry. The show premiered in August 2024.

Peacock has officially reached the bookend for its series, Based on a True Story, as Variety reports the streamer has slapped the title with a cancellation. The second season came out all the way back in November, so fans have been waiting months for the final verdict, but it’s not the one they were hoping for. The news is a bit shocking as both seasons of the Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina-led dark comedy drama performed well with audiences and critics alike, earning positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Showing potential for growth, the second season even added 7 points to its score on the online platform, moving from a Season 1 76% critics’ approval rating to Season 2’s 83%. Still, for one reason or another, NBCUniversal’s streamer decided to close the book and move on from Based on a True Story.

Peacock has closed the book on Based on a True Story, cancelling the true-crime satire after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The streamer has also cancelled the sports comedy Mr. Throwback, starring Adam Pally and Stephen Curry, after one season. (Our sister site Variety first reported the news.)

The news comes five months after the release of True Story’s second season, which dropped in its entirety in November. The cancellation caps its run at 16 episodes.

The comedies “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback” have been canceled at Peacock, Variety has learned exclusively. “Based on a True Story” had debuted its second season in November 2024, while “Mr. Throwback” aired its one and only season at the NBCUniversal streamer in August 2024.

Peacock does not release regular viewership information, so gauging the exact audience of either show is difficult, but both received solid reviews upon their release.

“Based on a True” story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a financially struggling couple who decide to start a true crime podcast to investigate whether or not their plumber is in fact a serial killer. The cast also included Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The show originally premiered in 2023.

Craig Rosenberg created the series and served as an executive producer. Annie Weisman served as writer, showrunner, and an executive producer on Season 2 with Jaclyn Moore also writing and executive producing.

With star Mason Gooding recently teasing Neve Campbell's return for Scream VII, the overarching continuity of the slasher movie universe is beginning to take shape. The popular horror franchise created by Wes Craven in 1996 remained confined to the California suburbs of Woodsboro during the first five installments before branching out to New York City in Scream VI, a reinvigorating departure expected to continue when Scream 7 is released in 2026.

Did “Based on a True Story” need a second season? Arguably no, but credit where credit is due: Season 2 the Peacock series — now led by Annie Weisman — is significantly more confident, entertaining, and batshit (respectfully) than the first, so when the inevitable cliffhanger rolls around, it actually feels earned.

Season 2, Episode 8, “This Week’s Guest” starts with Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) held hostage at a podcast studio by the as-yet-unidentified Copycat Killer. This is a show with so few characters that I was genuinely stumped as to the murderer’s identity, and thrilled by the reveal that its Chloe Lake’s (Natalia Dyer) sister (Sarah Paxton) — whose sister was killed by Matt (Tom Bateman), the West Side Ripper.

It’s a turn very much of a piece with the rest of the season, which smartly pulls away from Ava, Nathan, and Matt’s hit podcast and its dubious ethics.

After the first season saw Tory unwittingly sparking romance with a serial killer, the actress told Deadline about “justifying her choices” as she gets engaged to ‘Westside Ripper’ Matt (Tom Bateman) and “holding up a mirror” to true-crime obsessives in Season 2 of the Peacock dark comedy thriller, now streaming on the platform.

“I definitely thought at first, Tory would probably be in the dark in Season 2 and she’d just be dating Matt and having no idea that she was in bed with a serial killer,” admitted Liberato. “But it was an interesting challenge being thrown that curveball and having to justify her decisions and her choices.

The cast of Peacock's Based on a True Story gives stellar performances, particularly the two leads playing characters involved in a true-crime podcast. The comedy thriller tells the story of a couple who decide to directly profit from a serial killer in their area by starting a podcast about him. To make the show unique, the podcasters choose to interview the murderer with the agreement that he does not kill anyone else while doing the podcast. The series forces viewers to examine where the line is between entertainment and exploitation.

Despite its heavy central question, Based on a True Story maintains a lighthearted tone throughout the show. The podcast was canceled by modern-day cancel culture, and the status of the couple and the killer hang in the balance.

Thus, the plot takes some interesting twists and turns, one of which is a storyline about trying to rehabilitate Matt (Tom Bateman). The belief this could work, however, seems far more unlikely than even the non-sensical (albeit highly entertaining) nature of the plot itself.

Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina have a copycat on their hands, but the sophomore season of their dark comedy thriller is anything but a retread.

Season 2 of Peacocks twisty true-crime comedy thriller Based on a True Story is off to a great start, and if the series new showrunner has her way, the Kaley Cuoco & Chris Messina romp could go on for years to come. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, showrunner Annie Weisman, who was at the helm of Physical and came from Desperate Housewives and About a Boy, made a candid admission about how many seasons are in store for the hit comedy, noting, I don't really see a limit at this point." She added:

I can promise you that we had plenty to do this season in eight episodes. We were sort of packed with comedy stories, romantic comedy stories, and a mystery story. And we do promise that it comes to a very satisfying conclusion, but then we're also able to kind of tease a whole new mystery that could bring us back for another season.

When the first season came out, I really enjoyed it and so I was excited that there was more to tell in the story, especially with some of those season 1 cliffhangers. Based on a True Story is a delightful dark comedy thriller on Peacock that fits right in with the latest influx of modern whodunit shows that poke fun at societal obsession with both true crime and podcasting. It combines these loves into one hilarious story about a couple expecting their first child, dealing with life challenges, and finding opportunities in the most unlikely of places. They have discovered the identity of a local serial killer, and it just so happens to be someone they know.

Rather than turn him in, Ava (Kaley Cuoco), who figured out the mystery thanks to her amateur sleuthing skills, thinks they should capitalize on it.

Nathan's desire for a break from life is taking him down a dark path in Based on a True Story season 2. Played by Juror #2 star Chris Messina, Nathan was introduced in season 1 of the Peacock dark comedy thriller as the husband to Kaley Cuoco's true crime-obsessed Ava and a former tennis star who, after a career-ending injury, has turned to teaching tennis. The first season of Craig Rosenberg’s dark comedy introduced Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina), a married couple living in Los Angeles who accidentally cross paths with active serial killer Matt (Tom Bateman) and decide to start a true crime podcast with him. As the specter of the West Side Ripper grows, so too does the podcast’s notoriety, and Matt sinks his claws into the lives of two people in way over their heads and dancing with the devil.

Kaley Cuoco has found her stride post “Big Bang Theory,” first with “The Flight Attendant” (season one is awesome), and now with the returning dark comedy series, “Based on a True Story.” All eight episodes of the second season of “Based on a True Story” will drop on Thursday, Nov. 21 on Peacock. Based on a True Story takes viewer obsession with the whodunit genre, true crime, and podcasts and melds it all together into a fun yet dark comedy thriller. Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina star as Ava and Nathan, a married couple and soon-to-be parents struggling to reach their professional goals. Opportunity strikes involving a serial killer in town, Avas fascination with true crime podcasts, and knowledge that puts them in a unique position to succeed. But its also a risky position that sets them up for almost certain disaster.

The first season, which premiered in June 2023, had a total of eight episodes that all dropped at the same time on Peacock.

Matthew Lillard played one of the original Ghostfaces, Stu Macher, alongside Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in Wes Craven's Scream, and despite the character seemingly meeting a violent end, fans continue to speculate and theorize that the deranged killer could return in the upcoming Scream 7.

Stu appeared to be pretty definitively killed off during the climax of the movie, but we have seen plenty of people survive what should be fatal wounds in the franchise, so who knows?

For his part, Lillard has said that he believes Stu is still alive, and would be happy to reprise the role if that was something fans wanted to see.

“Stu is definitely alive, right? My character Stu is definitely alive. I would love it. If it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it. Then sure. Obviously.”

Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman and Liana Liberato are back with more murder and mayhem in Based on a True Story season two. And this time, there’s a new pint-sized accessory in tow.

Based on a True Story is based on (or partly inspired by) a true story. The series, which satirizes true-crime tropes, introduced Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who crossed paths with an infamous serial killer, “The Westside Ripper,” in Los Angeles. Ava, a pregnant true-crime obsessive, suggested making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their marital rut.

Now, after the events of season one, season two opens with Ava and Nathan as new parents who attempt to now get out of the true-crime game — but, as the trailer shows, those aspirations are fleeting.
