Image
Godzilla's rampage across the Marvel Universe kicks off next week in Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 by Ryan North and John Romita Jr., the first of six one-shots pitting the King of the Monsters against Marvel's most iconic superheroes.

These stories take place across various eras of both Marvel Comics and Godzilla storytelling, starting with Marvel's First Family in the Silver Age before Godzilla takes on the Jade Giant in a '70s-inspired slugfest with the strongest there is in the pages of Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 by Gerry Duggan and Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Spider-Man Is Still Marvel's Most Disliked Hero, as Yet Another MCU Hero Admits They Don't Respect Him
Image
Captain America uses Spider-Man's philosophy to inspire, but still questions Spidey's credibility in Marvel Universe. Heroes like Tony Stark and public figures like J. Jonah Jameson contribute to Spider-Man's lack of respect in the superhero community. Despite lack of recognition, Spider-Man continues to save lives and take responsibility for tragedies, which will hopefully one day earn him some respect.

There's no denying that Spider-Man is beloved by millions of people all over the world, but unfortunately, that universal love is not present within the Marvel Universe itself. Spider-Man finds it incredibly hard to get any respect, with even Sam Wilson's Captain America remarking how unbelievable it is Spider-Man would have anything profound to say.

The most recent Captain America makes his thoughts on Spidey known in Marvel's Voice: Legends #1, in the story "Powers For The People" by David F. Walker, Eder Messias, Jonas Trindade, Andrew Dalhouse, and Ariana Maher.

Marvel Fixes a Cut MCU Hero, as Patriot Gets the Black Panther Link Ryan Coogler Originally Intended
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers for Marvel's Voices: Legends #1!

Black Panther and Patriot finally have a powerful connection in the comics, bringing Patriot back into the business of saving the world. T'Challa reminds Patriot that there is more to the world than one set of borders and that he has a place in it. The interaction between Black Panther and Patriot in the comics could have been a great starting point for Patriot's MCU debut, hinting at his potential future with Wakanda.

The original Black Panther film acted as an incredible platform for several Marvel characters, including Wakanda's beloved King T'Challa. It narrowly missed showcasing another leader. The Young Avengers' Patriot nearly had a role in the film but didn't make the final cut. Now, the comics have finally given Eli and T'Challa their connection, and it's powerful enough to bring Patriot back into the business of saving the world.

Planet of the Apes Redefines the Franchise with 1 Surprising Secret
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Planet of the Apes #2!A shocking secret in the new Planet of the Apes comics has completely redefined the franchise. Planet of the Apes has become one of the most well-known science fiction franchises ever since the 1968 Charlton Heston classic first came to the big screen. The hostile relationship between humans and apes provided an interesting glimpse at the dystopian society where humans have lost their footing as the dominant species. However, Marvel's newest comic from 20th Century Studios shows that humans may not be as low on the totem pole as fans thought.

In Planet of the Apes #2 by David F. Walker and Dave Wachter, it's revealed that a small society in an orangutan preservation habitat in Borneo actually houses a society where humans and apes live side-by-side. This is during the early days of the Alz-113 outbreak from the modern Planet of the Apes film trilogy,...

Planet of the Apes' New Series Honors the Franchise's Political Roots
Image
Warning: contains potential spoilers for Planet of the Apes #1!Marvel’s new Planet of the Apes comic series honors the source material by keeping the political heart of the franchise alive. The Planet of the Apes franchise has long woven social and political commentary into its story of apes versus humans, and the first issue of the new title continues this tradition, creating a story that is not only entertaining and action-packed, but also reflects the real world that created it. This first issue is the initial entry in the 20th Century Studios comics line.

While the public often associates Planet of the Apes with the films, the franchise can trace its roots back to a 1963 novel by French author Pierre Boulle. The novel was satirical in the vein of Gulliver’s Travels, poking fun at a number of French institutions, and society in general. Rod Serling, of Twilight Zone fame,...

Image
Disney owns the Marvel Comics company, and when Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox film studio a couple years ago, it gave Marvel the chance to publish comic books inspired by 20th Century properties like Alien, Predator, and Planet of the Apes. Now The Hollywood Reporter has learned that when that book is released in April, it’s going to be used to launch a new Marvel imprint: the 20th Century Studios line. The Alien and Predator comic books, and any other 20th Century property that ends up getting the comic treatment from Marvel, will also be part of this imprint.

‘Naomi’ Canceled After One Season at CW
Image
“Naomi” has been canceled after one season at The CW, Variety has learned.

The DC series debuted its one and only season back in January. It is the latest DC project to get the ax at The CW following the cancellations of “Batwoman” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” The only remaining DC shows on The CW are “The Flash,” “Superman & Lois,” and “Stargirl.” “The Flash” was renewed for a ninth season back in March, while “Stargirl” is waiting to debut its third season later this year. “Superman & Lois” was renewed for a third season in March.

In the series, when a supernatural event shakes her hometown of Port Oswego to the core, Naomi (Kaci Walfall) sets out to uncover its origins, with a little help from her fiercely loyal best friend Annabelle (Mary-Charles Jones). ‘Naomi’ Not Returning To CW For Season 2

Exclusive: Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama Naomi will not be back for a second season on the CW.

Just two days after the Kaci Walfall-led DC series wrapped up its often pre-empted first season with a DuVernay & Jill Blankenship penned two-hour finale, the for-sale CW pulled the plug Thursday. With that, we hear that the Array Filmworks and Warner Bros TV produced show is talking to other outlets about continuing Naomi’s tale on streaming or higher up the dial.

The move by the Mark Pedowitz-run CW was not totally unexpected.

While garnering a lot of critical acclaim, including from Deadline, Naomi was in a constant battle to find an audience, especially online. The show suffered several preemptions since its January 11 debut, including for the Beijing Olympics and for consecutive weeks in early March. It also has to be noted,...

Ava DuVernay at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
Naomi is the latest entry in The CW’s slate of shows based on DC Comics’ characters. Written and executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, and adapted from the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell for the Wonder Comics imprint, the show follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny.

Naomi looks at superheroes from the perspective of the small town folks who read about it in the news. Naomi runs a Superman fan site. He is fiction in her world… until he’s not. Inside the ‘Naomi’-Verse With Ava DuVernay and Kaci Walfall
Image
Most of the superheroes on the DC-on-The-cw dramas have a long history with each other. Their comic book counterparts have been around for decades, and even in these adaptations, the characters have crossed over into each other’s worlds to team up and take down villains more than once.

But when “Naomi” joins the lineup on Jan. 11, the show — and the titular character, played by Kaci Walfall — is on her own.

She may be a big fan of Superman within the series — so much so that she runs one of the largest fan sites in the world about the DC hero — but she lives in a very different universe than the one in which The CW’s Superman (of “Superman & Lois”) resides.

“I want this to be an autonomous story about Naomi,” executive producer Ava DuVernay tells Variety. “One of the things I really wanted was for her to live in her own universe.

‘Naomi’: Ava DuVernay On Expanding The Naomi-Verse Beyond The Comic Book Via New CW Series—TCA
Image
Ava DuVernay is expanding beyond the comic book world of Naomi via her upcoming CW series of the same name, premiering Jan. 11. And that could leave the door open for potential crossovers with other popular superhero series on the same network.

“We got a lot of information in the first two episodes which means: we get to make up cool new things,” DuVernay said during the show’s TCA presentation on Thursday. “In terms of crossovers, we’re not thinking about that right now. She’s on her own path and I really think this is the first part of the Naomi-verse. People need to be trying to crossover into here! So we’ll see what happens, but you won’t see any crossovers in Season 1. We’re focused on Naomi’s journey singularly.”

Based on the eponymous comic book series that debuted in 2019, co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and...

What to Watch in January: New ‘Scream,’ ‘The Tender Bar’ and ‘How I Met Your Father’
Image
After the rush of holiday specials and prestige movies that define December, January entertainment can often feel like a bit of a letdown. That it’s traditionally been a dumping ground for iffy-looking movies and a bit of a dead zone for new TV shows hasn’t helped its reputation.

But release patterns have changed drastically over the past few years (and even more drastically during the pandemic). Even in the worst of years there’s always something worth seeking out, and this doesn’t look like a bad year...

Netflix & Michael Starrbury Adapt David F. Walker Comic ‘The Hated’ For Potential Western Series
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has acquired the David F. Walker action comic The Hated for a potential live action western series. The prime mover here is Michael Starrbury, the Emmy-nominated writer who teamed with Ava DuVernay on When They See Us and Colin in Black & White, the Netflix series on Colin Kaepernick. Starrbury will be EP along with Prime Universe Films’ Adrian Askariah, Walker and Sean Owolo.

It’ll be a female-driven post-Civil War revisionist history western, based on the exploits of Araminta Free, a gun-slinging bounty hunter in a world where the Civil War ended differently – instead of a victory for the North, there is a truce, and what had been one country is now two. Araminta specializes in crossing the border into the Confederacy tracking down vicious war criminals, which has made her a woman with a price on her head. Solid Comix publishes it.

Starrbury is under a multi-year...

DC's "Naomi" on The CW
Image
"Naomi" is the upcoming live-action, supernatural TV series, based on the 2019 DC/Wonder Comics superhero title, by writers Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and illustrator Jamal Campbell, starring Kaci Walfall, airing mid-season on The CW:

"In an alternate universe, the degradation of the Earth's ozone layer exposed the surface of the Earth to a previously-unknown type of radiation, which caused 29 random people all over the Earth to develop superhuman powers. Some of these people sought to rule the world with their new powers, while others opposed this, which led to a cataclysmic war between these 'metahumans'.

"One month later, fourteen of the metahumans were dead, and seven others left the planet, leaving only eight remaining. 'Naomi' was the first child born to two of these metahumans. The most evil of the original 29 metahumans, 'Zumbado', sought to kill the infant Naomi, so her parents sent her to 'Earth-0 'for her safety,...

The CW is starting to make decisions about new series for the 2021-22 broadcast season.

The network has picked up All American: Homecoming and Naomi to series.

Black Lightning spinoff Painkiller and Jennie Snyder Urman’s millennial nun dramedy Our Ladies of Brooklyn are not moving forward.

The All American spinoff and Ava DuVernay’s superhero project join a reboot of classic sci-fi drama 4400 straight-to-series. The CW is set to unveil its full fall schedule and midseason 2022 programming on Tuesday.

‘Naomi’: Kaci Walfall Embodies Titular Teenage Hero In First Look At CW Pilot From Ava DuVernay
Image
Kaci Walfall is a near spitting image of DC’s Naomi in the first look at the CW pilot from Ava Duvernay and Jill Blankenship.

The CW offered fans of the comic a glimpse at Walfall’s embodiment of the teenage superhero. From gold accessories in her hair to a convoluted web of photos and news clippings, Walfall’s protagonist mirrors the hero on the 2019 comic book cover.

Naomi, the network’s latest DC adaptation, comes from DuVernay and Arrow writer and co-exec producer Jill Blankenship. Earlier this month, the pilot cast Kaci Walfall as the titular hero, an “effortlessly cool and confident high school student” who discovers she has the ability to travel across the multiverse.

Also joining the cast are Mary-Charles Jones as Naomi’s “fiercely loyal” best friend Annabelle, Aidan Gemme as Annabelle’s “sweet, shy and a bit nerdy” boyfriend, Mouzam Makkar as Naomi’s mother Jennifer, Daniel Puig as Naomi’s ex-boyfriend and Will Meyers as a friend who has a crush on Naomi.
