Martin Hernandez was born Martin Alejandro Hernandez Mendez in Guadalajara, Jalisco, the The son of Martin Hernandez and Arcelia Mendez, Hernandez's mother had Spanish, American and Mexican ancestry and Hernandez's father's family was of Mexican descent, with distant ancestors from Spain. He has two younger brothers, Salvador and Sebastian. Hernandez was raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco and West Covina, California where he attends to Covina High School.

In his first feature film, The Devil's Backbone which was released in 2001, he had a small but pivotal role during a flashback scene. Hernandez took a long break from acting but in 2003 he decided to cast for small roles, No me toques (2004) was his second feature film and it earned Hernandez his first critical acclaimed success. The following year, he won an Ariel Award for his role opposite Taira Court in Nado sincronizado. In the following year, he was nominated for an ALMA Award for his role of Ricardo in Nado sincronizado, where he starred alongside Taira Court and director Bethania Maclean. In 2006, he won his first Cinanima Awards a French award, for "Outstanding Supporting Actor" and his film won "Best Picture" in a Short or TV Movie, for the film Nado sincronizado. A year later he was credited in his only Emilio Estevez film, Bobby.

Martin Hernandez appeared in the successful films The Devil's Backbone (2001), Nado sincronizado (2007) (U.S) with Taira Court, and Bobby with Anthony Hopkins. Hernandez also started in a short film named No me toques Hernandez portrayed Mauro, an anorexic teen that tries to find they way to survive in the streets after his mother was killed while sailing drugs in Chile. The film takes place in Chile and Chicago during the 70s. Hernandez had to loss 43 pounds for the character. He was a voice actor for the Spanish version of the animated series The Simpsons playing Lisa's lover Milhouse Van Houten in various episodes, and SpongeBob SquarePants. He also voiced the Spanish version of the penguin Mumble character in the George Miller film, Happy Feet. Hernandez's most recent film releases are Nado sincronizado (2005) Mexico (2007) United States, the Emilio Estevez film Bobby with great Hollywood actors and actresses like Lindsay Lohan, Shia LaBeouf, William H. Macy, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen and Sharon Stone and in the Spanish version of the box-office success Happy Feet which grossed nearly $384,330,479 dollars worldwide. He has been confirmed for the role of Marcos in the Mexican film Violanchelo along friend Barbara Mori, he has also join Dirty Tricks along with an all-time cast including Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, and Brad Pitt and he has also been confirmed for a role in the up-coming thriller Wanted along Jennifer Aniston and for the second time with Meryl Streep.

Martin Hernandez is "culturally Catholic". He speaks Spanish, English, and some German. Martin studies at Covina High School in California. He runs track in the school's team.

Hernandez has appeared in television commercials in Australia and Russia, such as for iPod, the game Monopoly, and the German version of Starbucks coffee. Hernandez filmed a Pepsi commercial with Britney Spears for the Canadian public. He has also had a cameo appearance in the first season of Desperate Housewives, Hernandez was also on various episodes of MTV's Mi TRL, in which he was a co-host. In a later episode, he and a cast-member dressed like animals and run wild through the streets of New York.
