Eddie Vedder and Stephen Marley have shared new covers of two Neil Young classics from Harvest for an upcoming tribute album benefitting the Bridge School.

While “Rockin’ in the Free World” has become a Pearl Jam live staple, for his contribution, Vedder covered “The Needle and The Damage Done,” Young’s devastating 1972 song about heroin addiction. The Pearl Jam frontman plays the cover pretty straight (not that that’s a bad thing), with just acoustic guitar accompaniment and a vocal performance that’s distinctly reminiscent of Young’s soft, quivering tenor.

A cover of Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” by Eddie Vedder has been released as the latest single from the upcoming compilation album Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Volume I, arriving today along with a cover of “Old Man” by Stephen Marley.

Vedder’s take on “The Needle and the Damage Done” conveys the hard-earned wisdom of the 1972 composition, and showcases the Pearl Jam singer’s signature gravelly baritone. It also isn’t the first time he’s sung the song — Pearl Jam first covered it in 1995, and it’s appeared a few times in their setlists since then. In 2009, Vedder dedicated a rendition of it to Michael Jackson, two months after the pop star’s death.

The Makings of Curtis Mayfield is a bit of a misleading title for the oblique documentary directed by the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician H.E.R. The name, a riff on Mayfield’s honeyed 1970 ballad “The Makings of You,” implies an intimacy with the subject and promises a detailed, if not necessarily comprehensive, introduction to the radical artist.

But H.E.R.’s film, which premiered at SXSW, doesn’t really offer any of that. The musician finds her own way to capture Mayfield, one that relies heavily on conversations with filmmakers, producers and fellow musicians. The path occasionally yields a fascinating insight — like when Jimmy Jam talks about how Mayfield was one of the first Black artists to own their master recordings — but more often it can feel a little too meandering and disjointed. Mayfield the person frequently gets lost in the mélange of testimonies.

Shaggy and Sting appeared on The Tonight Show to perform their latest collaborative single, “Til a Mawnin.” The pair were joined by a live band and two back-up singers for the upbeat performance, which paid homage to reggae music.

The musicians dropped “Til a Mawnin” last month. The track was written by Shaggy, Sting, and Henry “Junjo” Lawes, and was produced by Shaggy and Shane Hoosong. It re-imagines Lawes’ 1981 “I’m Not Getting Crazy” riddim, which has been the foundation for several classic reggae tunes.

When H.E.R. won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Judas and the Black Messiah” in 2021, she used her acceptance to thank some of her biggest influences, including Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Curtis Mayfield. But when articles about her speech began popping up online, she noticed that Mayfield was the name that websites always cut from the headlines.

That experience convinced H.E.R. that Mayfield, a soul legend whose legacy spanned ’60s hits with The Impressions to a solo career that included the influential “Super Fly” soundtrack, hadn’t received the appropriate recognition from modern audiences. She attempts to rectify the problem with her directorial debut, “The Makings of Curtis Mayfield,” a documentary that sees her join an A-list roster of her musical idols to discuss Mayfield’s ongoing legacy.

As the film tells it, Mayfield was ahead of the curve on just about everything.

The 22-date 2024 tour marks the collective Marley brothers’ first tour together in two decades. Set to commence in the fall, “The Marley Brothers: A Legacy Tour” will feature the family singing individual songs as well as standouts from the catalogue of their father, Bob Marley. The tour comes on the eve of Bob Marley’s 80th birthday in 2025, as well as after the release of this year’s biopic Bob Marley: One Love.

The tour kicks off on September 5th with a Vancouver date, and continues through September with shows in Phoenix, Austin, Cincinnati, New York City, Toronto, and Atlanta. Randy Spendlove, president of worldwide music and publishing at Paramount Pictures, is no stranger to musical biopics. His roster includes “Dreamgirls” and “Rocketman.” When it came time to bring reggae icon Bob Marley’s story to the big screen, his challenge remained the same as always: “How do you tell the story about a legendary figure? How do you accomplish it? And how do we make sure we utilize Bob?”

Early meetings took place during the pandemic with Marley’s sons Ziggy and Stephen as well as director Reinaldo Marcus Green over Zoom. The answer would be in authentically preserving Bob Marley’s live recordings and enhancing them – with actor Kingsley Ben-Adir’s vocals layered in.

However, the first complication the team needed to overcome was clearing the music rights.

Nearly six months after Jo Mersa Marley died at age 31, the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office has released new details about what led to his unexpected death.

Jo Mersa Marley, the grandson of Bob Marley, has died at 31 years old according to a spokesperson for the musician.

According to Wzpp Radio in Miami, Jo was found dead in his car in Miami and may have died from an asthma attack, but an official cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

The son of Stephen Marley, Jo was born in Kingston, Jamaica to a legendary music family that has provided decades of reggae music and a long-lasting impact on the music industry. His uncles are musician Ziggy Marley and DJ Damian “Jr Gong” Marley.

Jo is survived by his wife Qiara and his daughter Sunshine.

Fans have taken to social media with an outpouring of love for the late musician. Andrew Holness, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, tweeted his condolences to the Marley family.

Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley, the grandson of Bob Marley and son of Stephen Marley, has died aged 31.

News of the reggae artist’s death was confirmed to Rolling Stone on Tuesday (27 December). A cause of death has not been announced.

Political figures in Jamaica have paid tribute to the late musician.

The country’s Minister for Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Honourable Olivia Grange, said that she was “deeply saddened by the news”.

“We were graced by Joseph, whose stage name was Jo Mersa, performing at our Jamaica 60 Launch in Miramar, Florida, USA in May,” she wrote on Twitter.

“His untimely passing at the young age of 31... is a huge loss to the music as we look to the next generation. May he find Eternal Peace as we mourn his loss during this season of goodwill when we celebrate with family and friends our love for each other.”

A month after Buju Banton announced the impending arrival of his new album Upside Down 2020, the reggae superstar revealed Friday that his first LP in 10 years will be released June 26th.

Banton also shared his new single “Blessed” from Upside Down 2020, which marks Banton’s first full-length album since his prison release in December 2018 following a seven-year stint on U.S. federal drug charges. John Legend, Pharrell, Stephen Marley and Stefflon Don are among the album’s guests.

New Orleans-based band the Revivalists left their home base in the Big Easy to record their surprise new Ep, cutting tracks in another Southern city famous for its musical contributions. Made in Muscle Shoals, recorded at Fame Studios and out now, combines the group’s anthemic, uplifting brand of roots rock with the northwest Alabama’s trademark gritty soul on reimagined versions of the Revivalists’ songs, one choice cover, and one new track.

A mini-documentary directed by Jay Sansone and following the group’s recording process at Fame has also been released.

Bob Marley’s native Jamaica shines in the new video for “Easy Skanking,” a song off 1978’s Kaya that has received an updated visual to celebrate both the reggae legend’s legacy and his birthplace.

The video, directed by the Pantera production company, “captures a loving, authentic look at a day in the life of the indefatigable, uprising spirit of the people who live, work, love, and call Jamaica their home,” Universal said.

“Easy Skanking” pairs Marley’s classic track with striking images of everyday life in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica.

Ziggy Marley is developing a biopic on his late father Bob Marley, who popularized reggae music.

The Paramount Pictures film is in the early stages of development with no director, writers, or producers attached.

Bob Marley, a native of Jamaica, began performing in 1963 with The Wailers then went solo in 1974. He died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36. With songs that contained a strong sense of spirituality, he sold more than 75 million records worldwide. His notable hits included “Stir It Up,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” “Buffalo Soldier,” and “Redemption Song.”

Ziggy Marley was born in 1968 to Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He headed the group Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers with his siblings Sharon Marley, Cedella Marley, and Stephen Marley when he was 11 years old. Ziggy Marley won best reggae album at the Grammy Awards last year and has earned seven other Grammys, including one for best children...
