- Dr. Fortey was elected to the Royal Academy of Science. He is Senior Paleontologist at the Natural History Museum. He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2023 King's New Year's Honours List for his services to Paleontology and Geology in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England.
- He studied the evolution of arthropods and had a particular interest in the long-extinct marine arthropods, trilobites - one of the earliest groups of arthropods in existence.
- In 1997, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
- At school, he developed passions for wildlife and geology, and excelled in both arts and science, though his headmaster firmly instructed him to study science.
- His parents ran two fishing tackle shops. Sadly just as Richard was about to sit the Cambridge scholarship exam, his father was tragically killed in a car crash.
