Oklahoma’s Trump-Loving, Bible-Thumping Superintendent Faces Porn Probe
Image
An investigation is underway in Oklahoma after a television screen in the Maga state school superintendent’s office reportedly showed a video of nude women during an executive session of the State Board of Education on Thursday.

The images reportedly appeared on a screen in the office of Ryan Walters, Oklahoma’s far-right Superintendent of Public Instruction. Walters previously told schools to teach the Bible and Ten Commandments, demanded students watch him pray for Donald Trump, and named transphobe Chaya Raichik to a state education committee. He also tried to...

Spider-Man 4's Newest Update Makes 1 Surprising MCU Hero's Appearance Feel Almost Inevitable
Image
The confirmation of the director for Spider-Man 4 makes the inclusion of one powerful Marvel hero in the upcoming MCU sequel even more likely. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures quickly confirmed after Spider-Man: No Way Home that more web-slinging adventures would unfold in the MCU, and Tom Holland has long been expected to reprise the role of Peter Parker's Spider-Man. Spider-Man 4 got its biggest update in years in September, as Jon Watts' replacement as director was finally revealed, and he's a familiar name in the MCU.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that director Destin Daniel Cretton is expected to direct Spider-Man 4, continuing his esteemed career with Marvel Studios after leading Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Wonder Man series. Cretton's attachment to Spider-Man 4 has raised anticipation for the sequel, and this could create the opportunity for some of the director's frequent collaborators to also appear in the movie.

Oklahoma Superintendent Commands Schools to Teach the Bible
Image
Oklahoma’s far-right Superintendent Ryan Walters has issued a directive commanding the state’s classrooms to keep a copy of the Bible and teach that “the Bible and the Ten Commandments are foundational for Western civilization.”

In a memorandum issued to Oklahoma schools on Thursday, Walters announced: “Effective immediately, all Oklahoma schools are required to incorporate the Bible, which includes the Ten Commandments, as an instructional support into the curriculum across specified grade levels.”

“The Bible is an indispensable historical and cultural touchstone,” Walters wrote. “Without basic knowledge of it,...

Oklahoma Schools Are Fighting Back Against Porn-Obsessed Superintendent
Image
Oklahoma’s State Superintendent Ryan Walters has already made headlines for sending context-free porn to his fellow lawmakers. He’s now accusing one of the school districts under his jurisdiction of supporting the exposure of children to what he describes as “pornography” in schools. What horrendous, degenerate, pornographic display of hedonism is Walters’ administration accusing teachers of hiding in libraries? Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, and Jeannette Walls’s memoir The Glass Castle.

Yesterday, Edmond Public Schools petitioned the state Supreme Court to rule on a threat from the Oklahoma Department of Education,...

‘Lessons in Chemistry’ Cast and Character Guide: Who Plays Whom in Apple+ Drama?
Image
Based on the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus, “Lessons in Chemistry” combines science and cooking in a great experiment. Brie Larson stars as intensely intelligent Elizabeth Zott, a woman bound to make waves wherever she goes because of her high Iq as well as her beauty. Larson also executive produced the Apple TV+ drama series, whose showrunner is Lee Eisenberg. Eight episodes unfold to tell the emotional and unexpected story of Elizabeth Zott, a Hastings lab technician (and really PhD-level chemist) who transforms into a television celebrity cook.

The first two episodes landed Friday, October 13, and the show will end right before Thanksgiving, an appropriate holiday for cooking! New episodes will be released weekly on Fridays at midnight, Pacific time. Alongside Larson, the starring cast includes Lewis Pullman, Stephanie Koenig, Aja Naomi King, Kevin Sussman and more stars throughout the season.

The Glass Castle: 16 Things The Movie Changes From The Book
Image
This article contains mentions of childhood trauma, alcohol misuse and sexual abuse.

Although The Glass Castle adapts the memoir of the same name, there are quite a few things the movie changes. The overall premise still remains the same as the 2005 bestseller, in which author-journalist Jeannette Walls provided a no-holds-barred look at her dysfunctional childhood. Helmed by Short Term 12 and Shang-Chi writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton, The Glass Castle stars Brie Larson as the central protagonist while Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts star as her parents Rex and Rose Mary. Shifting between Jeannette's childhood and adult life, the 2017 drama touches upon how Rex and Rose's parenting wavered from supportive to painfully tragic.

Cretton's movie opened to mixed reviews from critics with Larson receiving particular praise for her performance. Purists of the book also had some nitpicking to do with everything that The Glass Castle changes. Given how the Walls family often shifted across states,...

The 7 Best New Movies on Netflix in May 2023
Image
Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.

Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.

Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

Where Was Glass Castle Filmed? Every Filming Location Explained
Image
The Glass Castle only shot in a few distinct locations to capture all of its scenes. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the 2017 film starred Brie Larson. Larson was joined by a star-studded cast that included A-list names like Naomi Watts known for Mulholland Drive, Woody Harrelson of True Detective, Max Greenfield of New Girl, and Sarah Snook of the wildly popular HBO series Succession.

The Glass Castle is based on a best-selling memoir of the same name by Jeanette Walls, released in 2005. In the movie, Larson plays Jeanette, who reflects on her nomadic and unusual upbringing with her eccentric parents. Her mother is an artist, while her father is an alcoholic who together fail to provide a permanently safe and structured environment for Jeannette and her siblings. An older Jeanette struggles to grasp with her parents' nonconformist lifestyle and the psychological abuse and poor conditions forced on her growing up.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton Talks Building ‘The Glass Castle’ Starring Brie Larson [Interview]
After the critically acclaimed success of 2013’s “Short Term 12,” director Destin Daniel Cretton already knew what he wanted to tackle next — an adaptation of Jeannette Walls‘ 2005 best selling memoir “The Glass Castle.” The book is chalk full of dark and heavy themes about Walls’ childhood but primarily focused on the dysfunctional relationship she had with her mentally unbalanced parents.

The Glass Castle – Review
With just a few weeks left in the big Summer season, Hollywood hopes to get a slight jump on the serious Fall/Winter awards time with an adaptation of an acclaimed biographical novel. Oh, and it’s a “heart-tugger’ about an offbeat family. Now, such movies can be heartwarming like Meet Me In St. Louis and I Remember Mama, or countless other syrupy-sweet homages to home and hearth. And then there’s the opposite, the tough profiles of hard lives with difficult heads of the household like The Great Santini or (gasp) Mommie Dearest. Really, this new flick could almost be “Daddy Dearest”, as its main focus is a man who made life difficult for his offspring, due partly to his boozing, but mainly because he could never really realize his dreams, particularly his elaborate, unmade plans for The Glass Castle.

Those blueprints are a long ago memory for successful...

‘The Glass Castle’ Review: Destin Daniel Cretton Falters with Indecisive Adaptation
Destin Daniel Cretton’s adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle is more affected than affecting. It’s strange, given how Walls’ life story has all the makings of the naturalistic dramas Cretton clearly thinks he’s making; there’s poverty, negligent parents, alcoholism, a hint of sexual abuse, and children in peril, elements the director also explored in his break-out feature Short Term 12. In classic literature these would be topics Charles Dickens would’ve turned into ways in which to study humanity, in neorealism they would have served as examples of the moral decay prevalent even after the horrors of war, and in nonfiction filmmaking they would be mirrors we would rather look away from. In Cretton’s film however, they lie somewhere in between: he’s not Hollywood enough to commit to complete romanticizing or edgy enough to remove artifice and show us how dark we can become.

‘The Glass Castle’ Review: Days of Whimsy and Misery
On the surface, Destin Daniel Cretton’s adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle, should pack an emotional punch. It’s the story of a painful childhood, the gulfs that form between parents and children, and the difficulty of finding forgiveness. The film also features outstanding performances, especially from Woody Harrelson who continues to show that he’s one of the best actors working today. And yet Cretton’s movie can never seem to find much depth beyond Walls’ suffering. Its heavy reliance on flashbacks drains the film of emotional tension, and Cretton struggles to find much insight on …...

'Annabelle' Sequel Eyes $30+ Million Opening as Summer Slow Down Continues
Lulu Wilson in Annabelle: Creation (2017)
Saturday Am Update: WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation is off to an excellent start, bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday previews) on its way to a weekend around $35 million if not more. It's also great news for director David F. Sandberg who helmed last year's hit Lights Out for WB. That film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget under $5 million. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, matching the score for the first film. Open Road's The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature is performing even worse than expected, delivering an estimated $3 million on Friday. This is already shaping up to be the lowest opening for a film playing in over 4,000 theaters by a wide margin. Currently the worst opening for an opening that size belongs to The Emoji Movie with $24.5 million, but with the $9 million or so Nut Job 2 is...

New York and, later, MSNBC, but once Jeannette Walls published a best-selling memoir about her harrowing childhood, The Glass Castle (Lionsgate's film adaptation opens Aug. 11), she started picking up a different kind of intel about her subjects.

Movie Review: The Glass Castle takes a gritty true story and spins it into Hollywood fluff
Jeannette Walls, the author of the best-selling 2005 memoir whose big-screen retelling hits theaters this week, reportedly played a consulting role in the production of The Glass Castle. Walls, whose book casts a non-judgmental eye on an upbringing that might kindly be referred to as “unconventional” and less kindly as “neglectful,” writes in the Los Angeles Times that she was pleased with director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Brie Larson’s attention to detail in adapting her story into a film. While it’s understandable that Walls might not want to linger on the more grim aspects of her childhood, Cretton’s decision to pull punches on those exact moments takes what could be a powerful tale of resilience and forgiveness and spins it into just another piece of Hollywood feel-good fluff.

Cretton, who made a name for himself alongside Larson with the festival favorite Short Term 12 (2013), does ...

Brie Larson On the Kind of Roles She Never Wants: ‘I Won’t Take the Job If It’s Like That’
Brie Larson
Oscar winner Brie Larson’s wide-ranging resume speaks to her interest in never doing the same thing twice — this is, after all, a talent that bounced from her Best Actress win for “Room” to a blockbuster turn in “Kong: Skull Island,” a former singer who first found fame with the bubble gum pop album “Finally Out of P.E.,” a serious star that has flexed her comedic chops in films like “21 Jump Street,” and a newly minted Marvel superhero — and the actress spoke to that aim at a recent tea held in honor of her upcoming film, “The Glass Castle.”

“I don’t know why I pick the jobs that I pick,” Larson said when asked about her process. “And I don’t want to know why. Usually, by the time I’m on the press tour and I’m asked questions and suddenly you’re put on the spot,...

‘The Glass Castle’: Brie Larson Cannot Save Its Cracked Façade [Review]
Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton launched two careers in 2013 with his empathetic at-risk teen drama “Short Term 12”: his own and Brie Larson’s. Then mostly known as a comedic actor, with roles in films like “21 Jump Street” and “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” Larson convinced everyone of her dramatic chops in her “Short Term 12” performance, which paved the way to a deserving Oscar win two years later in “Room.”

Considering their alchemy, it’s little wonder the duo reteamed for “The Glass Castle,” an adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ 2005 memoir about her severe family dysfunction.

Woody Harrelson and Brie Larson in The Glass Castle (2017)
“The Glass Castle” is a far better book than movie. While this is not surprising on its face, since books are often more complex, moving and involving than their screen adaptations, it is astonishing for other reasons. The cast is topnotch. Oscar winners and nominees abound. Director Destin Daniel Cretton adapted Jeannette Walls’ bestselling 2005 memoir of a turbulent and destitute upbringing. His previous directorial effort was 2013’s “Short Term 12,” a deeply moving and credible drama about at-risk kids. It would seem an inspired choice having him direct another film about endangered children, especially one starring such stellar actors...

The Unsaid (2001)
'The Glass Castle': Film Review
The Unsaid (2001)
The ties that bind often embarrass or even shame, a near-universal reality that writer Jeannette Walls explored, unforgettably, through the extreme example of her childhood. Her book The Glass Castle — plainspoken, vivid and unputdownable — is equal parts loving tribute and pained confessional, resisting sentimentalism at every turn. Director Destin Daniel Cretton mostly manages to do the same, though his concessions to the expectation for big movie moments deliver occasionally strained results.

But the feature, which reunites the filmmaker with his Short Term 12 breakout star, Brie Larson, successfully captures the essence of the memoir, with exceptionally potent work...

Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
10 Best Movies to See in August: 'Detroit,' 'The Dark Tower' and More
Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Ah, the dog-days month of summer moviegoing! This August is pretty light on potential blockbusters (save a certain long-awaited fantasy-Western by one Stephen King), leaving room for a number of counter-programming indie curios worth investigating. Robert Pattinson, Channing Tatum and Aubrey Plaza all do some major-league acting in three respective, remarkably offbeat films; Kathryn Bigelow zeroes in on some historical racial tensions and riots in the 1960s Motor City; and a documentary reckons with more recent ones in Ferguson, Missouri. Here's what you need to see this month.

Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
Woody Harrelson says fans can expect a lot more humor from the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars story than they've seen in other installments in the franchise.

The actor opened up to Et's Carly Steel on Sunday at a press junket for his upcoming film, The Glass Castle, dishing on the hotly anticipated standalone film, and the performance of Alden Ehrenreich, who stars as a young Han Solo.

"He's a great actor and a great guy, [with a] great sense of humor," Harrelson, 56, shared. "I think a lot of humor comes through what he's doing. I think it could be one of the funnier Star Wars movies."

Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts Was Almost in ‘Big Little Lies’
Naomi Watts
Four different actresses just received Emmy nominations for their work on “Big Little Lies.” Not among them, for obvious reasons, is Naomi Watts, who doesn’t actually appear in the acclaimed HBO miniseries — but, according to an extensive new Guardian profile, she almost did.

“We talked about doing that together,” Watts says of her longtime friend Nicole Kidman, who produced and stars in the adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name. “I might have been in it.” Actually in the show are Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Alexander Skarsgård, all of whom are now up for Emmys (as is Kidman). Watts got to star in “Twin Peaks,” though, so who got the last laugh?

Arriving in Us cinemas next month is The Glass Castle, based on the memoir of Jeanette Walls. The movie has been adapted by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Lanham, with the former also directing. And it’s assembled quite a cast.

The synopsis reads as follows, incidentally…

Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family, The Glass Castle is a remarkable story of unconditional love.

“The Glass Castle” Trailer suggests an acting showcase
For many, Brie Larson first came onto their radars in Destin Daniel Cretton’s film Short Term 12. Later on this year, Larson will re-team with Cretton for The Glass Castle, which dropped a Trailer last week. You’ll obviously get to see the Trailer at the end of this post, but we’re not quite there yet. First up, we’ll set the stage for the flick. It’s actually only about three months from hitting screens, so it’s hardly some late winter release. If it hits with strong reviews, it could have a head start on all of the festival entries. I’m sure that’s not an accident either. Short Term 12 may have been too small, but Room has Larson a force to be reckoned with. She can help get this one over the hump, no doubt about that. The film is an adaptation of the memoir by Jeannette Walls.

Check out the latest trailer for ‘The Glass Castle’
The movie that’s been in ‘talks’ for over five years finally sees a release date and a trailer for audiences to laud over. The Glass Castle first created hubbub in 2012 after Jennifer Lawrence’s name was attached to produce the film adaptation of Jeanette Walls’ novel.

With this being Lawrence’s first producing role, The Glass Castle is already seeing its popularity skyrocket after its trailer was released this weekend. The film, based off of Walls’ memoir of the same name, follows Walls’s dysfunctional upbringing, dealing with her abusive and alcoholic father and her aloof artist mother. Brie Larson stars as Jeannette Walls, with Naomi Watts playing her mother Rose Mary and Woody Harrelson playing her father Rex. Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously worked with Larson on Short Term 12, steps in as a writer and director for the film.

The trailer looks and grabs at one’s emotions almost immediately.

Must Watch: First Trailer for 'The Glass Castle' Featuring Brie Larson
"This is as real as it gets kids, you learn from living!" Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for the film The Glass Castle, the latest feature from writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton, who is one of the most underrated filmmakers working today. Cretton has made two outstanding films so far: I Am Not a Hipster (in 2012) and Short Term 12 (in 2013). This time he adapts the memoirs of Jeannette Walls, as played by Brie Larson, a woman growing up in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads with a mother who's an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father. The cast features Naomi Watts & Woody Harrelson (as her odd mother & father, respectively), Sarah Snook, Max Greenfield, Brigette Lundy-Paine, and others. As expected, this looks fantastic and it's easily one of my most anticipated films to see this year. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Destin Cretton's The Glass Castle,...

Coming Distractions: Brie Larson ignores her eccentric family in the trailer for The Glass Castle
Country folk and city folk may never truly see eye-to-eye, but this trailer for The Glass Castle looks to bridge the gap between them by showing how a woman can reconnect with her wacky, free-spirited family after abandoning them in favor of a more successful and straightforward life in New York. Unless she doesn’t actually want to reconnect with them, of course, which seems to be the main conflict here. The movie is based on Jeannette Walls’ memoir, and Brie Larson is playing the adult version of Walls. Woody Harrelson—in full Woody Harrelson mode—is playing Walls’ alcoholic father, a man who constantly moves the family around due to his inability to hold a job, and Naomi Watts is playing her mother.

The Glass Castle was directed by Destin Cretton, who previously directed Brie Larson in Short Term 12. It’ll be in theaters on August 11.

First trailer and poster for The Glass Castle, starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and NaomI Watts
Author: Scott Davis

The first trailer and poster have been released today for the anticipated family drama The Glass Castle, due for release later this summer, both of which you can view below thanks to Lionsgate!

The Glass Castle is based on the memoir by writer Jeannette Walls and is co-written and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, who brought us the superb Short Term 12 back in 2012. His latest tells the story of author Wallis (played by Oscar Winner Brie Larson, who reunites with Cretton) as she reminisces about her and her siblings’ childhood with their parents and their struggles with poverty.

As an adult, Walls, now a hugely successful New York journalist, has remained distant from her family and reunites with them after many years. The film version had been mooted since 2007 and at one point fellow Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle, Passengers) was to star and produce,...
