2005 was filled with great slasher, spooky, and creature-feature movies. Early 2000s horror movies weren't afraid to push boundaries and scare audiences in new and exciting ways. Movies like Saw 2, Hostel, and The Devil's Rejects displayed a whole new type of brutal horror subgenre and showed just how terrifying the world could be in these franchises. These graphically violent movies weren't the first of their genre, but they brought the shock value that audiences felt worldwide.

Released in the same year, movies like The Ring 2 and The Exorcism of Emily Rose were about ominous, supernatural horror. These movies were about suffering from within and the vengeful spirits inside the main characters. Looking back on the horror genre throughout time, there’s always been a period where certain sub-genres have been most prominent. The 70s and 80s were all about the slasher flicks, with masked villains marauding around sleepy suburbs or high school kids having their heads chopped off, while remakes such as House of Wax and Ring dominated the early noughties. There’s another sub-genre, however, that had its roots in splatter films such as Peter Jackson’s superbly gross Bad Taste and Braindead, plus ‘video nasties’ like 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave.
