Letterboxd Reveals Top Films and Actors of 2024

Letterboxd released its list of the most-watched actors and highest-rated films of 2024, based on ratings from its 17 million users. Zendaya was the most-watched female actor again, thanks to her roles in ‘Dune: Part 2’ and ‘Challengers.’ Dune: Part 2 was the top-rated movie of the year, with a 4.4-star rating, and its director, Denis Villeneuve, was the most-watched director.

Zendaya’s ‘Dune’ co-star, Timothée Chalamet, was replaced by Willem Dafoe as the most-watched actor. Dafoe appeared in four big films last year: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ ‘Saturday Night,’ ‘Kinds of Kindness,’ and recently released, ‘Nosferatu.’

Canneseries Awards: Germany’s ‘The Zweiflers’ Takes Top Prize

German series The Zweiflers (Die Zweiflers) took home the prize for Best Series at the Canneseries Awards last night.

This year, Canneseries took place from 5 to 10 April, in parallel with the final MIPTV event. The Zweiflers – which also won Best Music and the High School Award for Best Series – is a six-part series about a Jewish family in contemporary Germany pondering the inheritance of the family delicatessen. Creator and showrunner David Hadda paid tribute to his Jewish grandparents at the premiere of the show, which will premiere in Germany on Ard’s Mediathek streaming service in the spring.

Norwegian series Dumbsday (Dummedag) won for Best Screenplay. The series is set against the backdrop of a virus that causes people’s intelligence to drop to unsurvivable levels worldwide.

Some details emerged on Wednesday (September 14) about the shocking death of French electro producer DJ Mehdi. The popular DJ (born Mehdi Favéris-Essadi) died on Tuesday at age 34 when he was fatally injured after falling from the roof of his Paris home.

According to Liberation Next, Mehdi suffered fatal injuries when a skylight in the Plexiglas floor of his apartment in Paris' 20th arrondissement shattered, causing the DJ and three of his friends to plummet 7 meters. The three unidentified friends were sent to the hospital as well. One of Mehdi's publicists said the party at the DJ's home was a birthday celebration for pal DJ Riton, according to the French newspaper France Soir.

Update, 11:42 a.m.:According to French site Liberation Next, the accident happened at DJ Mehdi's home, when the mezzanine collapsed and fell several meters. Three others have been hospitalized.

Update, 11:30 a.m.: According to Le Monde, the PR agency Phunkster confirmed to 20 Minutes that there aren't any more details about the death of Mehdi, though it seems that he fell from a mezzanine level with some other people. Others are reporting he fell off a roof.

Hip hop/electro producer DJ Mehdi died Monday night at age 34. DJ Mehdi's publicist has confirmed the news, Consequence of Sound reports, though the cause of death is still unknown. Initial reports are calling it an accident.

French hip-hop/dance producer DJ Mehdi, who began his career on the underground Parisian hip-hop scene, died on Tuesday (September 13). According to several reports, the DJ/producer (born Mehdi Favéris-Essadi) was fatally injured when the roof of his Paris home collapsed. He was 34 years old.

After working his way up to premier producer status, Mehdi linked up with French electro-house DJ/producer Pedro Winter (a.k.a. Busy P), whose label, Ed Banger Records, rose to international prominence with acts like Mr. Oizo, and SebastiAn and Justice.
