15 Indian Movies About Dysfunctional Family
Image
“Family is a life jacket in the stormy sea of life.” – J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Is it, though? I think all of us reading this list know better than to look at our families through the rose-tinted glasses of unfailing love and appreciation. Let us accept it – no family is perfect; no household is the cradle of joy, and parents are not god-like. Thankfully, literature and films across the globe have come up with some of the most honest representations of dysfunctional families, typically a family in which the parents’ emotional needs take precedence over children who are then brought up under the guise of neglect, abuse, and/or denial.

Over the last two decades, Indian films have also finally moved beyond the Sooraj Barjatya kind of representation of families – a huge house populated with cajoling members of a joint family, ideally based on the values of the upper-class,...

Subhash K Jha Celebrates 6 Years Of Kartik Aaryan’s Luka Chuppi
Image
Subhash K Jha celebrates six years of Kartik Aaryan’s Luka Chuppi in this unique feature.

Long before Chhaava swept into the nation’s consciousness, director Laxman Utekar made the charming comedy Luka Chuppi, which took Kartik Aaryan’s stardom a notch ahead. Just when the small-town comedy threatened to sag under the weight of over-statement, there comes a fresh, feisty take on a live-in relationship in this Progressive Comedy (not to be confused with the Regressive Comedy as in Total Dhamaal). Luka Chuppi doesn’t mind bending the rules of the rom-com genre as long the tilt doesn’t make the script look cross-eyed and waylaid. A sense of madcap adventure is constantly projected into the narrative without losing grip over the grammar of growing giggles.

Luka Chuppi doesn’t try too hard to generate humour. It doesn’t always make us laugh. But it never fails to amuse,...

“I have grown as a fan, everyday I have met her” – Mrs Director Arati Kadav On Sanya Malhotra
Image
Some female directors share a very special rapport with their leading ladies: Aparna Sen and Shabana Azmi in Sati, Kalpana Lajmi and Dimple Kapadia in Rudaali, Gauri Shinde and Sridevi in English Vinglish, Arati Kadav and Sanya Malhotra in Mrs….

Arati remembers her first meeting with Sanya. “In the first meeting itself, Sanya endeared herself so much to me that I really wanted to work with her and learn and grow with her. She made me feel very comfortable in my skin, in being myself, and then, through her own dedication, inspired me to excel. I have grown as a fan, and every day, I have met her. This role in Mrs was very tough, also for an actor who operates with so much empathy, and seeing her break and rebuild herself was something else. Working with her any day is like the best creative day of my life. I...

Female writers who gave us vulnerable male characters
Image
Over the years, the definition of a man has changed its course, and with time the represention of the modern man has also changed in Indian Cinema. Gone are the times when men were just macho heroes rescuing women. This is the era of vulnerable, compassionate and sensitive men. Men who can cry, who are not shy about seeking help when they need it and acknowledging the worth of the women in their lives. Men who can express their feelings and not hide them.

Many Bollywood male characters written by women have played a big role in breaking the mould of a stereotypical hero.

This change has been a product of increasing number of female writers. Women writers have actually played a big role in breaking the stereotypes around masculinity, by creating male characters who are sensitive, understanding and would cheer for women.

It is important to write wholesome men...

India has not explored the horror genre in its truest form: Filmmaker Sapna Bhavnani
Image
When Bhavnani first wrote a horror story ‘Bearlike Man’ that was selected at Bifan (Korea), the largest genre festival in Asia, she found herself to be the first Indian woman director to be on the platform ever.

"We were practically non-existent in that space. Over the three decades I looked at, 9.9 per cent of directors were women. Horror comes with just 5.9 per cent of directors being women and Sci-fi – 2.8 per cent. I find this statistic offensive. Wench 2022 showcased 47 horror /sci-fi/fantasy films — 43 of them directed by women," she tells Ians.

Believing that India has not really explored horror in its truest potential or form, the filmmaker feels there is no better medium to highlight social change than this genre.

"And there are so many different ways to make them instead of the cliche knee-jerk horror that we all know of," she asserts.

Talk to her about the fact that most...

Image
Paying tribute to the legendary late actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt, R. Balki came up with the psychological thriller ‘Chup: Revenge of the Artist’. He opened up on why he brought Dulquer on board.

He said: “For ‘Chup’, I was lucky to have someone super talented, a superstar in one half of the country, who speaks Hindi as if it’s his mother tongue, and who can be a terrific discovery for the other half of the country. I wanted a relatively fresh face for Hindi Cinema with the acting muscle of a veteran; and then I found Dulquer.”

Dulquer is known for his roles in ‘Kurup’, ‘Hey Sinamika’, ‘Salute’, ‘Sita Ramam’ and others. Balki explained the movie to him over Zoom during lockdown and he that said beyond that, he never had to elaborate about the film to Dulquer.

Revenge killings in R. Balki's 'Chup': Acts of a panned film's director?
Image
The trailer of ‘Chup’, directed by veteran ad filmmaker and director R. Balki, was released on Monday. A film centred around revenge killings, the needle of suspicion in it points to a filmmaker, who’s believed to have committed the murders after critics panned his movie while being generous to what he believes less-deserving films.

The serial killer thriller stars Dulquer Salmaan, fresh off his success in Sita Rama, who plays the film director, Pooja Bhatt, Sunny Deol and Shreya Dhanwanthary.

The film seems to come from a very personal space of Balki, whose some films have failed to impress the critics. He even went on to call out the critics in the past over their pretentious attitude towards movies with mainstream elements.

Talking about the germ of the idea, Balki said: “I had this idea for the story a long time ago and I don’t know why I...

Film Review: Dear Zindagi (2016) by Gauri Shinde
Director Gauri Shinde loves to deal with human psychology and she does it in style in “Dear Zindagi”. It deals with the deep psychological waves that control the human emotions and make us stand in front of a mirror to judge our own reflections. The movie flows with the theory of Freud that says, “being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise”.

Kaira (Alia Bhatt), who also has the nick name Koko, is a talented but confused cinematographer, who wants to direct a movie in the future. She has her own way of living life but lacks confidence. She is comfortable with a set of friends, but always in search for the meaning of real “love” and the difference between life and success. She hates to be controlled by protocols. She does not bother to tell her boyfriend that she has slept with another guy. She...

Female Filmmakers Are a Growing Voice in India
Zoya Akhtar
The Indian film industry has historically been a male-dominated one, but the winds of change are blowing across the country, albeit slowly.

Better-served than the rest of the country is the Mumbai-based Hindi-language industry, where there are several active female filmmakers including Zoya Akhtar (“Gully Boy”), Reema Kagti (“Gold”), Leena Yadav (“Rajma Chawal”), Gauri Shinde (“Dear Zindagi”), Meghna Gulzar (“Raazi”), Shonali Bose (“Margarita With a Straw”), Farah Khan (“Om Shanti Om”) and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari (“Bareilly ki Barfi”), to name just a few.

“The new generation of young women directors is now making ad films, web series, corporate films, short fiction, documentaries and feature films, so it’s getting to be quite a level playing field,” says Priya Krishnaswamy, who works in Mumbai. Her Tamil Nadu set Tamil-language film “Baaram” is making the rounds at festivals.

“Luka Chuppi Is A Progressive Intelligent Comedy” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Luka Chuppi

Starring Kartik Aryan, Kriti Sanon & A Stellar Supporting Cast

Directed by Laxman Utekar

Just when the smalltown comedy threatens to sag under the weight of over-statement there comes a fresh feisty take on a live-in relationship in this Progressive Comedy (not to be confused with the Regressive Comedy as in Total Dhamaal).

But it never fails to amuse, as Guddu and Rashmi, two Mathura-based tv journalists, get hitched, fall in love and decide to give ‘live-in’ a chance before settling in permanently.

“Noor Says So Much Without Seeming To Say Anything” – Subhash K Jha Review
Noor

Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Purab Kohli, Kannan Gill, M K Raina, Smita Tambe

Directed by Suhnil Sippy

Honestly, the conscience has become a huge liability in these times. As a journalist with a good three decades of experience I still have problem deciding where to draw the line between professionalism and ethics.

Though I couldn’t relate to her endless boozing and snoozing, Noor Roy Choudhary as played by Sonakshi Sinha , is someone I’ve known in passing. And that’s I would keep her if I met her. At a safe distance.

Noor is not one of the best films on journalistic ethics. It doesn’t do to the contemporary Mumbai media world what the Paul Newman-Sally Field starrer Absence Of Malice did 30 years ago. It pricks at the conscience in a rather undemanding way. Noor takes sly and slender satirical swipes at sensationalism in journalism, more...

There is so much baseless crap out there and I can’t respond to everything.” As per sources,...
