How ‘Miss Austen’ Draws Fine Art from an Act of Real-Life Cultural Vandalism
Image
Beating Netflix’s (entirely unnecessary) remake of “Pride and Prejudice,” the BBC’s spinoff “The Other Bennet Sister” and French rom-com “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the proverbial punch, the 250th birthday celebrations of arguably Britain’s most cherished novelist begins with a four-part drama focusing on her elder sister.

For many literary scholars, Cassandra Austen is a villainess of Miss Norris-esque proportions. After all, her deliberate burning of her sibling’s vast personal correspondence — only 160 of her approximately 3,000 letters are still intact — largely thwarted any attempt to further understand the famously elusive author. However, “Miss Austen,” itself based on Gill Hornby’s same-named piece of historical fiction, does its best to exonerate her reputation as a cultural vandal.

The BBC original certainly comes with an impressive period drama pedigree. Director Aisling Walsh won a BAFTA for her post-war miniseries “Room at the Top,” while leading lady Keeley Hawes...

‘Miss Scarlet’ Shocker: Felix Scott Exits as Patrick Nash Ahead of Season 6
Image
Sad news, Miss Scarlet fans. TV Insider can confirm that Felix Scott will not return as Patrick Nash in Season 6. Nash made an appearance in Season 5 Episode 4 before being whisked off to Australia to continue his detective work and avoid further prison time. The logline for Season 6, the renewal for which was announced on February 19, confirms that Nash will have a narrative presence, but PBS confirms that he won’t have a physical one, much like Stuart Martin‘s formerly titular Duke did in Season 5 following his exit. The fan-favorite character was mentioned in the Season 6 description when the renewal, but Scott and Evan McCabe (who plays Oliver Fitzroy) were notably absent from the returning cast list. TV Insider reached out to Miss Scarlet reps for comment on why Scott has left the series and the possibility of Nash returning should the series be renewed for Season 7 in the future.

Image
If you were worried about the fate of Miss Scarlet, fret not. PBS has renewed Miss Scarlet for Season 6! The announcement comes a few days after the romantic Season 5 finale on Sunday, February 16 that ended with Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) and Alexander Blake (Tom Durant-Pritchard) sharing a romantic moment after a season of gradual flirting. But there is some sad news to go with the renewal. TV Insider can confirm that Evan McCabe will not be back as Oliver Fitzroy in Season 6. And while Nash (Felix Scott) is mentioned in the Season 6 description, Scott, like McCabe, is not listed among the returning cast list. PBS’s renewal announcement comes with a slew of updates about Season 6 production (and a celebratory video — see above). The most exciting news: Filming for the new season starts this month. Phillips and Durant-Pritchard will both be back in their roles, among more returning stars, and...

Lewis MacDougall in A Monster Calls (2016)
London Theater Review: ‘A Monster Calls’
Lewis MacDougall in A Monster Calls (2016)
“A Monster Calls” offers a child’s-eye view of cancer. Patrick Ness’ children’s novel, the winner of the 2012 Carnegie Medal and adapted into a 2016 film that starred Felicity Jones, sits with a 13-year-old boy trying to make sense of the disease laying waste to his mother — a disease that rarely, if ever, makes sense. Visited nightly by a storytelling monster, he slowly comes to appreciate that life isn’t a fairytale; it follows no plot. It’s a story about complexity that’s staged, in Sally Cookson’s Old Vic production, with the utmost simplicity.

That is, in the end, its great strength: it allows a sentimental story to cut through with sincerity. For a long while, however, it merely looks slimline: a stock gallery of school bullies, sleepless nights and scary monsters that speak in deep, echoing booms. Childhood, at first, seems the stuff of cliché: all messy bedrooms and deskbound daydreams.
