Biryani never tasted better. Director Madhumita’s Kaalidhar Laapata, adapted from her own Tamil film K.D., which was about an 80-year-old abandoned patriarch “adopted” by a precocious little boy, sails across its sedate, unadventurous landscape.

With Abhishek Bachchan helming the remake, the original protagonist’s age is knocked off by half. A romantic angle, quite unnecessary, featuring the ill-cast Nimrat Kaur, is also added to the original. Luckily, the core of the fable—a man finds his bearing after getting lost, tackled earlier with less rewarding results in Vanvaas—remains intact, untouched, and largely unspoilt.

Kalidhar Laapata has a remarkably stout heart. The writing is sometimes clunky, and the restricted budget shows up on screen with distracting frequency. For example, the Kumbh Mela is recreated in a studio with the portable bustle of a crowded bus stand.

But the rapport between Abhishek and his young co-star Daivik Bhagela is unmistakable.

Set largely in and around the gorgeously intricate testament of Rajput architecture, the JioHotstar series attempts to be too many things and make too little of a mark. The series’s imaginative idea for the name of a fictional Rajasthani city is to add an ‘L’ to ‘Bikaner.’ Sadly, with its part Agatha Christie and part “Game of Thrones” inspired plot, “Kull” has to take that same ‘L’ when it comes to producing a coherently consistent story. The series shines only in patches, with the lead actors doing the bulk of the praiseworthy work.

In some sequences before that, Sara Ali Khan, playing the semi-widowed wife of an Mia soldier, lovingly watches her little daughter being fed by her husband. It’s a lovely moment of wistful regret.

I craved for more such emotionally plush moments in a film that squanders considerable footage in trying to be the Jalandhar version of Top Gun. Not needed! There is enough edifying heft in the jingoistic cocktail that more than compensates for the amateurish aerobatics.
