There's something about knowing a film is based on a true story or real history that makes it so much more engaging. Everything from WWII to the Battle of Thermopylae, and even the life story of Robbie Williams as a monkey have been brought to life on the big screen. While many films root their stories in real history, actual historical accuracy tends to get left on the cutting room floor. Thankfully, one historian is standing up to angry film fans across the world and is setting the record straight about five of the greatest historical movies of all time.
Historian Dan Snow of History Hit compiled the five best historical films of all time and, mercifully, tore them apart for historical inaccuracies. The list featured Gladiator, Apollo 13, The Last of the Mohicans, Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan. Starting out with Ridley Scott's seminal Gladiator, Snow wasted no time,...

Quick Links Ridley Scott Doesn't Care About Historical Accuracy Ridley Scott Has Framed a Negative Review of 'Blade Runner'
Ridley Scott, the legendary English director behind Alien, Gladiator, Blade Runner, The Martian, and so, so many more, really doesn't care what you think about his movies... and we can't help but love him for it. As we get older, it becomes easier to stop caring about the opinions of others. In the case of Ridley Scott, "others" refers to critics, historians, and disgruntled audiences. It's a grouchy persona that the likes of Brian Cox can pull off charmingly. Scott does the same, but get on the wrong side of him, and he'll definitely let you know.
Across his long career as a director, Ridley Scott has understandably made some blunders. Be it a bad movie like Prometheus, or glaring historical inaccuracies in the likes of Gladiator or Gladiator II,...

When the crew aboard the S.A. Agulhas II set out in early 2022 to search for the Endurance shipwreck, it seemed nearly impossible.
“It’s the holy grail,” Nico Vincent, the sub-sea manager on the expedition, tells Variety. “It’s the most complicated one. Just being able to reach the field and dive three kilometers beneath the ice, it’s the level of complexity of walking on the moon.”
The Endurance, commanded by explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton on an expedition to traverse Antarctica from one coast to another, sank in the Weddell Sea in November 1915 as its 27-member crew looked on. Over the next 308 days, the men faced starvation and frostbite as Shackleton recruited five crew members to make the treacherous journey in a lifeboat to seek help on the South Atlantic island of South Georgia. Miraculously, when Shackleton returned to save the remaining men, he found all of them still alive.

Shackleton’s truly perilous 1915 ordeal – gussied up with colourised footage and AI voices – minimises the stakes of a 2022 hunt for its remains by Dan Snow and friends
Here is a frustrating film that tries to tell two stories at once, and succeeds with neither. It’s the story of explorer Ernest Shackleton’s epic Antarctic ordeal in 1915 and how he and his crew had somehow to journey to safety after their ship, the Endurance, sank. It’s also the story of how this ship was finally discovered by a hi-tech logistics team in 2022, 3,000 metres down at the bottom of the Weddell Sea near the Antarctic Peninsula. It juxtaposes Shackleton’s extraordinary battle to survive with the modern-day scientists’ struggle to locate the Endurance wreck, with tiggerish Dan Snow on board bouncing amiably about – and it is a pretty glib alignment.

Historical accuracy in movies and TV has been a source of fierce debate for decades, with some period dramas getting it surprisingly right while others eschew accuracy at the risk of criticism. In 2023, for example, Napoleon director Ridley Scott clapped back at British historian Dan Snow, after the latter had listed the movie's many historical inaccuracies, telling him to "Get a life" (via The Slate). Of course, historical accuracy is not necessarily the factor that makes any given movie or TV show good, but it can help to add to an atmosphere of authenticity and realism that many audiences look for.
Some period dramas in both movies and television have been extremely successful at impressing audiences with their historical accuracy. Whether that is in the way that a certain historical event is portrayed, or just how the culture of the time is depicted, these productions have been greatly praised for...

After producing the iconic Band of Brothers miniseries over a decade ago, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg teamed up for a new war drama, Masters of the Air. Released in 2024, Masters of the Air is a big-budget limited series from Apple TV+ that features a loaded all-star cast that includes Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, and many more. The show is based on a true story of 100th Bomb Group during World War II, and it has now received a very firm stamp of approval from a WWII historian.
Insider (via ScreenRant)had World War II expert John McManus break down scenes from Masters of the Air that take the historical battle to the skies. As one could assume, most of what is examined are the airborne sequences, whether that includes dogfights or bombing runs. Overall, I think its amazing. I would give it a nine out of 10, McManus said.

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a movie that French people love to hate. But despite harsh criticism in France, the historical epic smashed the box office and grossed over $9.76 million from 1.15 million tickets sold in its first two weeks in theaters.
Ironically, “Napoleon” got the lowest score of all of Scott’s recent movies on Allociné, the local equivalent of IMDb, with 2.3 stars out of 5 from 4,659 users’ reviews, yet it’s one of Scott’s biggest hits in France. “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as Napoléon Bonaparte, a Corsica-born officer who became Emperor of France, and Vanessa Kirby as his wife as Joséphine de Beauharnais, world premiered in Paris on Nov. 14, a few days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Scott’s last two movies, “The Last Duel” and “House of Gucci,” were warmly reviewed in France, and yet they sold only 425,000 and 800,000 tickets respectively during their releases there.

Lawrence of Arabia is riddled with inaccuracies, but it glamorizes T.E. Lawrence as a cinematic hero. The film's inventive use of the 70mm camera captures sweeping landscapes, making it a cinematic feat ahead of its time. Despite its inaccuracies, Lawrence of Arabia remains one of the most classic movies ever made.

Military historian Dan Snow breaks down a battle scene in 2014's Fury between four Sherman tanks and a German Tiger tank. The sequence features the Sherman tanks trying to get behind the Tiger to penetrate its weaker armor, but Brad Pitt's tank in the scene has a 76mm gun that would have been able to penetrate the Tiger's armor from anywhere. While Fury features visceral combat sequences and a compelling exploration of World War II tank warfare, the characters, themes, and story hold it back from being a truly iconic war film.

Ridley Scott is shrugging off the negative reviews coming out of France for his new historical epic “Napoleon,” which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais. Reviews are all over the place for the biographical drama. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gave it five stars, for instance, while French GQ wrote it is “deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny” to have French characters speaking in American accents.
As recapped by the BBC, other French publications also targeted Scott’s latest. The daily newspaper Le Figaro said the film could be renamed “Barbie and Ken Under the Empire,” while Napoleon biographer Patrice Gueniffey told Le Point magazine that Scott made a “very anti-French and very pro-British” rewrite of history.

It seems that every acclaimed director is trying to do his best to make a ‘practical’ film, that contains low to none of CGI shots. Now it’s the turn of the great Scott. A military historian confirms that the movie Glory accurately depicts the brutality and tactics of the Civil War, particularly the Battle of Antietam. The movie's realistic portrayal of the wounds suffered by Union soldiers and the poor tactical planning reflects the horrors of the Civil War. Although there are some embellishments, such as exaggerated explosion scenes, the overall battle sequences in Glory remain fairly accurate and successfully convey the chaos of the battlefield.
Thirty-four years after it was first released, a military historian is considering the accuracy of Glory. “Napoleon” director Ridley Scott is unbothered by analysis from a critic who called out several inaccuracies in his epic new film, telling him to “get a life.”
The nearly three-hour movie is the 28th feature for the director, who turns 86 on Nov. 30. And he clearly doesn’t have time for nitpicks from TV historian Dan Snow, who pointed out inaccuracies such as “Napoleon didn’t shoot at the pyramids.” Snow even dinged the movie’s tagline, “He came from nothing, he conquered everything,” since the French monarch did not conquer Britain.
“Get a life,” Scott told Snow of his critiques in a New Yorker interview published Monday, echoing William Shatner’s long-ago message to diehard “Star Trek” fans.

Ridley Scott dismisses criticism of historical inaccuracies in the Napoleon trailer with a curt response, suggesting he doesn't care about adhering strictly to history. Scott's focus in Napoleon seems to be more on delivering a compelling film with a standout performance by Joaquin Phoenix. While the trailer may have some historical inaccuracies, it remains to be seen how much the actual film deviates from history, but Scott's priority seems to lie more in creating a captivating cinematic experience.
Napoleon director Ridley Scott reacts to criticism that the trailer for his upcoming film has historical inaccuracies. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular French emperor, Napoleon is a historical epic tracking the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte and his turbulent relationship with his wife, Josephine. Napoleon is set for release on November 22.

Acast, the world’s most valuable podcast marketplace, is announcing the launch of Acast+ Access. This technology gives any company with an existing paid subscription offering the ability to add exclusive podcast benefits.
